Tell England (1931), Anthony Asquith and Geoffrey Barkas’ film depicting the Battle of Gallipoli, unsurprisingly incited emotional responses from its audiences. In Turkey, at a time when memories of the war were still fresh, the feeling was that Tell England would benefit from the insertion of a few ‘local scenes’. Additional scenes were written by author, Ziya Şakir, who also appeared in the film alongside other Turkish actors. In January 1932, this new version of the film was screened under the new title, Çanakkale/Gallipoli. In order to meet the demand for the indigenous production of the talkies in Turkey at a time when the necessary resources and infrastructure were not readily available, Tell England served as a way of offering a film which could meet these demands, without having to produce an entire film. Although the arrival of the talkies has often been described as having posed a challenge to the transnational exhibition of cinema, in this article, we will consider the ways in which local exhibitors of the period employed a number of tactics in relation to Tell England and its adaptation for Turkish audiences. In addition to subtitling, dubbing and foreign language remakes, creative strategies like those used in the Turkish production of Tell England, demonstrate the ways in which film continued to be productively exchanged internationally, even in cases where ideological reframing was required to suit local and national contexts.

Abstract:The coming of sound to cinema marked one of the most significant developments in all cinema history. However, there has been only limited research into this process despite its dramatic impact on the production, exhibition, and viewing processes of films. Most of the studies on the coming of sound focus on either Hollywood or other large film-producing countries. With the aim of contributing to the area of study, this article focuses on the transition in Turkey and investigates the ways in which the Turkish film industry and local audiences responded to the coming of sound. While examining these responses, the article will cover a variety of aspects regarding the production, distribution, exhibition, and reception stages–including the installation of new sound equipment in theatres; the fortunes of cinema musicians who accompanied silent films; the language barrier erected by the talkies; the critical and popular responses to these developments; and their place in the wider context of Turkey's modernisation.

Abstract:
İpekçi Brothers was the first firm that achieved vertical integration of production, distribution and exhibition in the film industry in Turkey. The family, who started to do their first business in the film industry by selling cameras and film stock in Thessaloniki Bonmarch, started to be active in the exhibition by running the Alhambra Cinema and started to be active in film distribution by making foreign purchases and being agents of Paramount and Ufa Film studios. In 1928, they also started film production with İpek Film and for a while became the only production company in the country. During this period when they were the only production company, the strongest distributor and the operator of the most prestigious cinemas, they worked with the most important and creative names of the country, followed the innovations in the world and tried to apply them. However, when their capital from trade was not enough to finance these attempts, they had to borrow from the bank (İşbank, a state institution) yet they still could not escape being one of the filmmakers who suffered the heaviest injuries from the Wealth Tax. Despite their entrepreneurial motivations and professionalization attempts in the film business, they always remained as a family-run firm. This pioneering and powerful family initiative did not go beyond to the being dependant on person who have strong connections with cinema (e.g. Ihsan, Cemil and Osman Ipekci) and enjoyed their power just for a single period of cinema in Turkey.

This article concentrates on the transition to sound cinema in
Turkey. The research first focuses on the use of sound in the
silent cinema period by explaining how the sound-on-disc and
sound-on-film screenings first began in Turkey. It then
explores the problems and debates that were triggered with the emergence of sound cinema during 30s, and examines the
efforts of cinema professionals and audiences of the period to
overcome these newly emergent problems. Finally, this article
embarks upon examining the reception of this transformation
by the intellectuals of the period and their aspiration for a
new way of film-viewing and spectatorship.

Though the first sound film is largely unknown and ignored in Turkish cinema historiography, music became one of the most important components in this country’s movies—a tradition that continued up to the ‘golden years’ of Turkish cinema in the 1960s and 1970s. In this chapter, I demonstrate how the style of such music, which was crucial to cinema during the transition to sound, changed over the ensuing decade. At first sight, it might seem that this alteration was related to the change in top-down cultural policies of the early Republican period, but I argue that the change of musical style in Turkish films mostly stemmed from the aim to reach larger audiences, as Turkish cinema was always financially dependent on audiences, and duly paid attention to their tastes and preferences during this period.

In the early Republican period, when there were years without any domestic production at all and if there was it was no more than one or two, almost the only production in the field of cinema were the many film magazines that went into circulation then. These magazines were the principal medium that created cinema culture in the country, and they played a significant role in shaping cinema audiences. While the magazines shaped cinema audiences, they also instilled in them the fantasy of being Western.
