PurposeThe construction of digital supply chains to integrate internal and external resources is becoming an important path for manufacturing enterprises to gain competitiveness. However, at present, research on the internal mechanisms of digital supply chain capabilities (DSCC) and enterprise sustainable competitive performance (ESCP) has not been sufficiently studied. Based on contextual ambidexterity theory, this study investigates whether DSCC could enable the realization of supply chain ambidexterity and further explains the mediating role of supply chain ambidexterity on DSCC and ESCP, and the boundary conditions of supply chain governance on supply chain ambidexterity and ESCP.Design/methodology/approachWith a survey data set of 232 Chinese manufacturing enterprises from different industries, the study empirically tests a moderated mediating model and conducts hierarchical linear modeling and bootstrap to test the study's hypotheses.FindingsThe results demonstrate that: (...

Purpose Despite the support of digital technology, there is a high degree of ambiguity and fluidity in the boundaries of digital products. This is because the addition of distributed innovation entities has an impact on the scope and scale of digital product innovation. Building upon the knowledge orchestration perspective, this study aims to construct a theoretical model, comprising distributed innovation, knowledge reorchestration and digital product innovation performance, and discuss the moderating roles of intellectual property protection and knowledge exchange activities. Design/methodology/approach Using a sample of 362 Chinese science and technology enterprises, the scholarship’s framework and hypotheses were tested using regression and bootstrap analysis. Findings The results confirm that distributed innovation positively enhances enterprises’ digital product innovation performance; knowledge reorchestration plays a partial mediating role in the linkage amongst distributed ...

In this paper, we adopt the resource-based view theory as the theoretical framework to empirically investigate the relationship among knowledge transfer received dimensions (i.e., tacit and explicit), human resource management practices, training and development types (i.e., on-the-job training and development, and off-the-job training and development) and subsidiary innovation performance. Using a survey dataset from 314 subsidiaries of foreign multinational enterprises located in China, we find that: (1) knowledge transfer received dimensions contribute to subsidiary innovation performance; (2) human resource management practices can positively moderate knowledge transfer received dimensions and subsidiary innovation performance; (3) the positive effect of human resource management practices on the knowledge transfer received dimensions- subsidiary innovation performance link increases when on-the-job training and development and off-the-job training and development is high. The purpose of this paper is to assess whether research and development (R&D) investment, degree of internationalization (DOI), and ownership structure affect the patent application of enterprises in an emerging market. Using a firm-level data from 242 China's information and communication technology (ICT) and automobile manufacturing listed companies on Shanghai and Shenzhen A- stock exchanges market from 2011 to 2015, our empirical results demonstrate that: (1) the degree of internationalization of enterprises has a positive facilitating influence on the correlation among corporate R&D investment and a patent application; (2) the state-owned ownership negatively moderates the R&D investment-patent application link, and (3) international expansion can adequately compensate for the efficiency disadvantages of R&D investment and patent application engender by state ownership. Besides, the study discovered and explained an exciting phenomenon and bring forth important enlightenmen...

PurposeAs an important driving factor of digital innovation, distributed innovation has received extensive attention from academia and business circles in recent years. However, extant works lack a discussion on the influence of distributed innovation on digital innovation performance. Drawing on the opportunity perspective, the study constructs a moderated mediating model to address how distributed innovation directly affects enterprises' digital innovation performance. Particularly, it investigates the moderating and mediating effects of IT-enabled capabilities and digital entrepreneurial opportunities on the above correlation.Design/methodology/approachWith a survey data set of 399 Chinese science and technology enterprises, the study conducts hierarchical linear modeling (HLM) and bootstrap to test the study’s hypotheses.FindingsResults demonstrate that (1) distributed innovation positively enhances enterprises' digital innovation performance; (2) digital entrepreneurial...

PurposeDrawing on the resource-based view, institutional logic and isomorphic pressure theories, this study constructed a theoretical model to explore the correlations between government subsidies and innovation performance. Particularly, this study aims to investigate the moderating effects of ownership types and degree of internationalization on these relationships.Design/methodology/approachTo empirically test the relationships, the authors use panel data from high-tech manufacturing and automobile manufacturing industries in Chinese A stock listed companies for the period 2011–2015 and performed regression analysis.FindingsResults indicate that government subsidies positively enhance enterprises’ innovation performance; there is a big gap between government subsidies’ incentive effect on innovation performance between state-owned enterprises (SOEs) and private-owned enterprises (POEs); with the improvement of internationalization, the promotion effect of government subsidies on ...

Financing activities are crucial exercises in any organizational set-up. It has attracted intense debate and scholarly attention in the financial management arena over the years, whether businesses should opt for debt or equity financing to expand their businesses or not. This paper attempts to ascertain the type of finance that family business operators in Ghana use to expand their business using Ashanti Region as the study area.Questionnaires were administered to 148 family businesses in Ghana. Descriptive survey study design was adopted to achieve the envisaged aims of the study. A total of 150 questionnaires were administered but 148 family businesses responded. Generally, the study revealed that founders or owner-managers use equity financing (68.92 %) as a source of start-up capital to commence their business activities. Also, founders or owner-managers admitted that they will only allow external investors (venture capitalist and business angels) to come in, if they would be p...

Training and development activities are a crucial exercise in any organisational set-up. It has attracted intense debate and scholarly attention in the human resource management arena over the years. However, its application to public sector has received little attention. This paper attempts to rectify this position by considering training and development as a tool for employee performance in the district assemblies in Ghana. In a sample of fifty (50) full time staff members of Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, the research revealed direct relationship between training and development and employee performance (r = 0.3347, p = 0.030). Also the results from the data analysis indicated that significant relationship exist between training and development and job satisfaction (r value (0.3338) is greater than p value (0.0307)). Finally, the study revealed that management and employees faced peculiar problems during training and development exercises. Management complained about funds whilst ...

PurposeBoth the scope of postentry growth and the scale of postentry growth are essential for Chinese multinational enterprises' aggressive internationalization. Yet, prior literature has not considered the synergistic approach of postentry growth that seeks the scope of growth and the scale of growth simultaneously. Building upon the embeddedness perspective and the learning view, we address how structural embeddedness directly affects firms' postentry growth in the form of scope and scale and indirectly affects postentry growth via both the scope of growth and the scale of growth. Particularly, we investigate the decreasing mediating effect of the growth's scale on the growth's scope when embeddedness strengthens.Design/methodology/approachWith a survey data set of 206 Chinese multinational firms from manufacturing and service industries, we conduct structural equation modeling (SEM), partial least squares path modeling (PLS-PM), instantaneous indirect effect asses...

By drawing on the concept of sustainable economic development, this study advances the research on debt sustainability in the economic literature. We explore the correlation between local government debt and regional economic growth in 30 provinces in China. Previous studies have established that the development of economic growth between regions is not independent and we, therefore, investigate the spatial effect of regional economic growth due to the existence of a spatial spillover effect or spatial expansion among regions. Using Moran’s scatter plot, a Local Indicator of Spatial Association (LISA) map, and a semiparametric spatial model (SE-SDM), our results demonstrate the following: (1) the spatial agglomeration effect has a significant influence on regional economic growth; (2) the relationship between local government debt and regional economic growth presents nonlinear characteristics, rather than having an inverted U-shaped relationship; (3) the semiparametric spatial mode...

Under the background of environmental sustainability, it is of great significance to investigate how green innovation influences firm performance dimensions in emerging economies. Explicitly, the interaction effects of absorptive capacity (AC) and managerial environmental concern (MEC) on the correlation between green innovation and firm performance dimensions must be explored. Our data were obtained through a questionnaire survey from 253 companies operating in China. Using hierarchical linear modeling (HLM), we found that (1) green innovation has a robustly positive effect on firm performance dimensions (operational, financial and environmental), and (2) absorptive capacity and managerial environmental concern can positively affect the correlation between green innovation and firm performance dimensions. Our results illustrate the integrating effects of absorptive capacity, managerial environmental concern, green innovation and firm performance dimensions.

Although there is a general recognition that human resource management (HRM) practices are a key factor in a firm’s innovation performance, from the extant literature we see that empirical investigation does not always offer evidence to support this assertion. This paper proposes that knowledge transfer positively moderates the link between HRM practices and firm innovative performance in foreign multinational enterprises (MNEs) subsidiaries operating in China. Specifically, a tacit knowledge approach affects knowledge transfer in HRM practice as well as firm innovative performance. With hierarchical linear modeling, our results demonstrate that: (1) HRM practices can have a positive effect on firm innovative performance; (2) knowledge transfer can positively moderate the effects of HRM practices and firm innovative performance; and (3) the positive effects of knowledge received on HRM practices and firm innovative performance will be strengthened with a tacit knowledge approach. This paper set out to investigate the ways training and development impacts on firm innovative performance as well as the moderating role of knowledge transfer received on training and development and firm innovative performance, using a sample of 229 foreign subsidiaries of multinational enterprises (MNEs) operating in China. We adopt hierarchical linear modeling, and the results of the study reveal that both on-the-job training and development and off-the-job training and development have an influence on the firm innovative performance. Also, the empirical results of the study demonstrate that the moderating effect of tacit and explicit knowledge received on the relationship between both on-the-job training and development and off-the-job training and development and firm innovative performance are stronger. This paper shows that continues updating of skills, ability and knowledge of the workforce through on-the job training and development and off-the job training development pro...

Under the background of resource dependence, it is of great significance to study the emerging market multinationals’ (EMNEs) entry mode into international market. How do complementary assets and expansion opportunities in a host country market influence the EMNEs executive’s entry mode choice? We adopt policy capture method to designed questionnaire and administered to high-level EMNEs executives in China. The results show that the availability of complementary assets in the host country market have a positive influence on EMNEs executives’ evolutionary and leapfrog entry modes choice, and EMNEs executives’ preferences for leapfrog mode over evolutionary mode is positively related to the host country’s complementary assets. The expansion opportunities in the host country market have a positive influence on EMNEs executives’ evolutionary and leapfrog entry modes choice. This shows that expansion opportunities in the host country market have a similar degree of attraction for executi...

Innovation is a key driver for organizations to survive and thrive in increasingly hyper-competitive markets. This study investigates the effects of boundary-spanning search on innovation capability. Specifically, it examines the mediating and moderating effects of network ties and absorptive capacity on boundary-spanning search and innovation in Chinese companies. We constructed a theoretical model of an organization’s boundary-spanning search and innovation capability and distributed a survey questionnaire to a sample of specific industries with upstream and downstream relations in Sichuan Province in China for their responses. Results from the study reveal that boundary-spanning search has a positive and significant impact on innovation capability as well as a positive moderating effect on absorptive capacity and innovation capability. This paper shows that enterprises need to continuously focus on exploring networking opportunities in direct and indirect ways to get access to ef...
