Overcoming geographic, cultural, and linguistic differences, the second phase of the Korean wave Hallyu made its mark in Latin America. From the results of the field research conducted in two Latin American countries Brazil and Peru during the summer of 2012, this study examines the effects of the second wave of Hallyu on Peruvian society. In doing so, it regards the demographics, education level, and socio-economic status of the Hallyu consumer groups that reflects the situation of inequality and escapism embedded in Peruvian society. The continuous access to a different culture, distinct from that of one’s own reality through a virtual environment of cyberspace may be a reflection of the individual’s own awareness of despair in the reality in which they find themselves, characterized by inequality and a cyclical nature of class differences.

포르투갈 유태인 출신의 레온네 에브레오가 쓴 사랑에 관한 대화록이라는 책은 일반독자에게는 좀 낯설은 작품일 수도 있지만 유럽 르네상스의 지식인들에게는 잘 알려진 책이어서 프랑스어, 히브리어, 라틴어와 스페인어로 널리 번역되었다. 이런 번역본 중에서 스페인어로 가장 적절하게 되었다고 보는 작품이 잉카 가실라소의 것이다. 이 논문의 초점은 이 번역자의 의지적인 선택에 대해서이다. 왜 잉카제국의 공주와 스페인 정복자 사이에서 혼혈 메스티소로 태어난 번역가가 굳이 그와 동시대에 박해받던 유태인으로 굴곡진 삶을 살아야만했던 레오네 에브레오의 작품을 번역했는지를, 특히 우연이 아닌 그들의 유사성에 대해서 분석하는 것이다.

"What began as the spread of South Korean popular culture in parts of East and Southeast Asia in the late 1990s, Hallyu ("the Korean wave"), made its landing and mark in a new cultural context in Latin America years later nearing the end of the first decade of the 21st Century. But how did Hallyu suddenly emerge in this part of the international system? What factors led to its development? The results of our field research findings in Peru and Brazil brings the argument away from the cultural proximity for both states with high levels of Asian migration (i.e. Japanese and Chinese) and provides an interesting insight into discussions on socioeconomic grounds that may have influenced individuals' interests towards Hallyu.
