    We investigated differences in the circular structure of Holland's interest types across racial-ethnic groups (African Americans, Mexican Americans, Asian Americans, Native Americans, and Caucasians; N = 11,610). The samples consisted of college-bound persons who completed the revised Unisex Edition of the ACT Interest Inventory (UNIACT; Swaney, 1995), as well as a comparison group of 10th graders ( N = 4,133) in the 1992 UNIACT norms sample. Analyses using a randomization test of hypothesized order, targeted principal components, and three-way multidimensional scaling suggest that Holland's model adequately represents the interest structures of both sexes in all the diverse samples.

    The purpose of this study was to provide initial results on the development and validation of the Career Futures Inventory (CFI), a new 25-item measure of positive career planning attitudes. Items were originated using the rational method. Results from an item analysis of scale homogeneity and exploratory factor analysis in a sample of 690 undergraduates from a large midwestern university revealed three subscales: Career Adaptability, Career Optimism, and Perceived Knowledge. Confirmatory factor analyses indicated that the three-factor model provided an excellent fit to the data. Additional analyses established high internal consistency, temporal stability, and construct validity through examination of correlates with dispositional optimism, Big Five personality characteristics, generalized problem solving, vocationally relevant self-efficacy, interests, and numerous career-relevant attitudes and outcomes. Implications for future research and counseling practice are discussed.

    Little is known about the experiences of school counselors in their role of disseminating college information to Latinx students. In this study, ten school counselors provided qualitative data which was then analyzed by the researchers for major themes. Themes highlighted the critical role of social capital: school counselors serve an overwhelming number of students, parental involvement is key, early intervention is crucial, parents and students have misperceptions about college, finances appear to be the largest road block to college access, and fear of leaving home function as a barrier for Latinx students. Findings revealed that school counselors in the study faced challenges of addressing inequality in college access, especially for Latinx first-generation students.

    In response to Tinsley (2000) we dispute his conclusions that congruence is a myth and the Holland hexagonal model lacks validity. We suggest that existing meta-analyses on the congruence‐satisfaction relationship fail to account for significant sources of error, resulting in inaccurate conclusions. Tinsley’s assertions concerning Holland’s model are demonstrated to be based on a misunderstanding of Holland’s hexagonal model and misrepresentation of Hubert and Arabie’s inferential strategy for evaluating order relations. Once it is clear that Holland’s model is a RIASEC order model (and not an equilateral hexagon) that enjoys strong support, Tinsley’s argument fails. © 2000 Academic Press

    As a heterogeneous population, Asian Americans are typically studied as homogenous, as opposed to making distinctions among nationalities and first languages. The current study examined whether ethnic/language match and mismatch among 150 Asian client/counselor pairs predicted successful completion of counseling and number of treatment sessions while controlling for counseling dropout and retention predictors such as socioeconomic status and acculturation. The participant data were obtained from a deidentified database of clients and counselors at a community mental health center for Asian Americans in the Southwest region of the United States. The main finding was that ethnic/language matching of Asian client and counselor pairs predicted successful completion of counseling and number of treatment sessions. The results of the study suggest that, when feasible, ethnic/language matching of Asian American clients and counselors may minimize patient dropout from counseling. Given that this matching is usually unfeasible, the authors suggest several strategies for improving the retention of Asian-American clients (as well as other clients from international backgrounds) in counseling.     The authors explored Hispanic and Caucasian college women's (N = 264) behavioral and attitudinal symptoms of eating disorders after controlling for body mass index and internalization of the thinness ideal, as well as the roles of ethnicity and ethnic identity in symptomatology. Correlational analysis, multivariate analysis of variance, and regression analysis suggested more similarities than differences between Hispanic and Caucasian college women in terms of eating disorders.

    This study examined the relationship between recalled peer victimization, coping styles, and current social anxiety. College students (N = 298, 87.9% female) completed a demographic questionnaire, the Recalled Victimization Questionnaire- Revised (RVQ-R), the Brief Fear of Negative Evaluation (BFNE), and the Coping Styles Questionnaire (CSQ). Three separate linear regression analyses were performed to test for mediation of coping style on the relationship among peer victimization and symptoms of social anxiety. Emotional coping was confirmed as a partially mediating variable between peer victimization and social anxiety through Sobel’s (1982) test for mediation. The results of this mediational analysis emphasize the importance of focusing on coping strategies among adolescents who experience peer victimization.

    The influence of counselor trainees' adult attachment orientations in the context of supervision has the potential to inform both training and supervision practice. However, the pursuit of such research requires the availability of appropriate assessment tools. The present study describes the development and validation of the Supervisee Attachment Strategies Scale (SASS), a theory-based measure of counseling trainees' attachment orientations toward their clinical supervisors. Participants were recruited online through their training directors at Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers member programs. Data were nationally collected from 352 trainees representing programs in the United States and Canada. Exploratory factor analysis yielded 2 interpretable factors along the adult attachment dimensions of avoidance vs. engagement and rejection concern vs. security. These 2 factors accounted for 55.85% of the interitem variance in the rotated solution of the 22-item SASS scale. SASS subscale scores were negatively correlated with the supervisory working alliance and predicted greater endorsement of role conflict and role ambiguity in the current supervisory relationship. Higher avoidance (but not rejection concern) predicted diminished perceptions of satisfaction with the overall training experience. Findings from this study suggest that trainees who engaged in adaptive attachment strategies may be more likely to address conflict, negotiate additional explorative opportunities in training, and seek out their supervisors in times of uncertainty.
