Intersectionality

In this autoethnographic mapping of the educational experiences leading to my current role as a researcher and teacher educator in the United States, I argue that I enacted de/colonizing processes through my academic migrations. Using personal narratives rooted in de/colonial, Black feminist, and Mami-influenced onto-epistemological orientations, I outline key movements made during my undergraduate studies at (a) an Ivy League college and a teacher education program in South Florida, and my graduate studies at (b) a second Ivy League institution and a Hispanic Serving
Institution. I provide examples from a published book, web articles, and personal e-mail communications that reveal how peers, faculty, and administrators reacted to my departures and arrivals. I contend with the paradox of the US academy granting me access to theorists who name critical pedagogy and intersectionality, while simultaneously exacerbating constraints I mitigated as a Black woman with familial ties to the Global South. Centering the de/colonial sense-making women embodying multiple marginality offer, I identify the epistemic frictions that motivated my critical academic migrations. I conclude by offering points of considerations for institutions of higher education that are purportedly committed to equity, inclusion, and supporting diverse onto-epistemic orientations.

What is community participation and how do we measure it? These questions are important as people with intellectual and developmental disabilities continue to experience exclusion, as policymakers design national funding schemes, and as researchers evaluate the success of interventions. A measurable definition of community participation enables people to know which interventions work, why, and where to target funding. Yet there may be good reasons to resist a universal definition of community participation. Building on work in feminist theory, this article shows the benefits of community participation as an essentially contested concept as contestation spurs innovative research. But even if contested concepts are good for researchers, are they good for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, their families, and professionals in the field? Aligning the goals of research with practice may be an important yet unattainable goal.

This paper engages with the formative concepts of diversity and intersectionality, inquiring how far they are used as tools for achieving (gender) justice that opens up spaces for marginalized constituencies, including racial and religious minorities, colonial subjects, queers, and women and how they unwittingly reify the hegemony of an entitled majority by failing to realize their emancipatory possibilities.

Amidst the expected, punning advertisements for data companies lining the drive into San Francisco, one passes a lone cultural billboard depicting Klimt’s The Virgin (1913). The image advertises Klimt & Rodin: An Artistic Encounter at the Legion of Honor. Below the image of entwined pale, female flesh against a tapestry of vibrant color are the words: “Gives off seriously sexual vibes,” excerpted from a review in San Francisco Magazine. Klimt & Rodin showcases the two male artists’ interest in depicting the white female subject, an art historical mainstay since the splash of Praxiteles’s naked Aphrodite of Knidos. Vibrant colors and gilt dominates the non-figural spaces of Klimt’s canvases, but not the subjects’ bodies, which are rendered in light flesh tones, highlighted with pale yellows and pinks. Rodin’s sculptures, in contrast, are hewn from monochrome materials—marble, bronze, clay—with no surface treatments. If the “seriously sexual vibes” advertised on the billboard come from the expected space of white female (and feminized) subjectivity, the “artistic encounter” on display is one of medium—of painting’s uncontested polychrome in contrast to the insistent monochrome of modern sculpture.

Das Buch verbindet zwei Schlüsselkonzepte aktueller politischer und feministischer Theorie - Intersektionalität und Gouvernementalität - mit der historischen Analyse der Problematisierung von Prostitution und ihren Regierungsweisen Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts und analysiert, welche Machtlogiken bei der Interpretation der Prostitution als Problem individueller moralischer Führung einerseits und als gesamtgesellschaftliches, politisches Problem andererseits wirkten.
Die Autorin zeigt empirisch auf, dass verschiedene gesellschaftliche Gruppen jeweils spezifisch moralisch regiert wurden und plädiert für ein politisches und prozessorientiertes Verständnis von Intersektionalität, so dass differenzierte Mechanismen der Machtausübung erfassbar werden.

“Old Town Road” holds the record for the most weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Lil Nas X, the artist behind it, gained popularity in a matter of months. He came out as gay on Twitter on June 30, 2019 and has addressed his sexuality several times since. He has appeared at public events dressed in outlandish clothes, and his outfits at the 2020 Grammy Awards ceremony attracted both admiration and criticism. Among the latter, the rant by rapper Pastor Troy about Nas X sporting loud pink garments as something that undermines Black masculinity reveals the persistent inconsistencies in the ways this masculinity is defined.

Enacted February 24, 2014 and effective until August 1, 2014, Uganda’s Anti-Homosexuality Act targeted Ugandans of minority sexual orientations and gender identities—many of whom self-identify as 'kuchu'—by imposing life sentences for homosexual sex and same-sex marriage. The original Anti-Homosexuality Bill introduced in 2009 promised even worse for kuchus: it would have mandated that all Ugandans report known homosexuals and threatened execution for serial offenders and other perpetrators of “aggravated homosexuality.” In the context of Ugandan political conflict, emerging international human rights norms, and global asymmetries of power, Uganda has become an ideological battlefront where competing actors—both US-based and Ugandan—advance their respective visions of a just and righteous global society. These factors mandate that US-based activists and organizations painstakingly consider how (or whether) they can advocate responsibly and effectively for international human rights related to gender identity and sexual orientation. Through interdisciplinary lenses and critical analysis, this paper explores three questions:

• How is Uganda distinct from other sites of antigay legislation?
• How have US-based organizations impacted Ugandan discourse and policy toward kuchus?
• How can US-based rights advocates and activists campaign for kuchus without doing them further harm?

This article discusses the acquisition of a physical impairment/disability through voluntary body modification, or transability. From the perspectives of critical genealogy and feminist intersectional analysis, the article considers the ability and cis*/trans* axes in order to question the boundaries between trans and transabled experience and examines two assumptions impeding the conceptualization of their placement on the same continuum: 1) trans studies assume an able-bodied trans identity and able-bodied trans subject of analysis; and 2) disability studies assume a cis* disabled identity. The perception of transsexuality and transability as mutually exclusive phenomena results from a non-intersectional analysis of transsexuality as an issue of sex/gender, but not ability, and of transability as an issue of ability, but not sex/gender. Difficulty recognizing continuities between these phenomena thus stems from an ableist interpretation of sex/gender and a cis(gender)normative* interpretation of ability. This article aims to: 1) enrich intersectional analysis in trans and disability studies and transability scholarship; 2) complicate disability studies, in which disabilities are often presumed “involuntary”, and encourage the decentering of a cis* subject; 3) encourage trans studies to decenter an able-bodied subject; and 4) advocate for increased dialogue and the creation of alliances between trans and disability studies and movements.

What does the development of a truly robust contemporary theory of domination require? Ashley J. Bohrer argues that it is only by considering all of the dimensions of race, gender, sexuality, and ability within the structures of capitalism and imperialism that we can understand power relations as we find them nowadays. Bohrer explains how many of the purported incompatibilities between Marxism and intersectionality arise more from miscommunication rather than a fundamental conceptual antagonism. As the first monograph entirely devoted to this issue, "Marxism and Intersectionality" serves as a tool to activists and academics working against multiple systems of domination, exploitation, and oppression.

Even though scholars and feminists have accused intersectional theory for being superficial, inadequate, context bereft and fashionably more populist than academic, its applicability in addressing multi-layered forms of discrimination cannot be ignored. It is against this background that the article, through a deconstructive reading of an Urdu short story, Do Haath, highlights the challenges of the protagonist, the Dalit household, comprised primarily of women. Besides discussing the intersectional subjects of the story, this article questions the deliberate omissions of the multiply disadvantageous people such as the Dalit-Muslim women, also known as the Pasmanda women from feminist, Dalit and subaltern discourses. Furthermore, this article foregrounds intersectionality framework to understand the multiplicative nature of oppression and discrimination that Pasmanda women are subjected to, and how by excluding them from their respective agenda, feminist and Dalit activists have contributed towards their perpetual marginality. Finally, the article suggests that intersectionality framework should be used to understand moments of celebratory resilience in the lives of intersectional subjects.

Within interpersonal and family communication, researchers have tended to construct and describe LGBTQ relationships in regards to a heterosexual norm. A review of recent research reveals the conceptual limitations of this framework, “outing” heteronormativity’s influence on our understandings of non-heterosexual relationships. The author outlines the challenges of “queering” interpersonal and family communication research and argues that feminist theory can contribute to this process by (1) revealing the heteronormative assumptions perpetuated by dyadic models of communication, (2) challenging the public/private bifurcation, (3) complicating notions of identity, and (4) emphasizing intersectionality. The article concludes by discussing the implications a feminist queer perspective holds for interpersonal and family communication pedagogies and research.

South Asia is a region with unity in diversity, having at least twenty different dominant languages and over two hundred basic dialects. And yet, most of South Asia continues to remain economically poor and "developing" with gender disparity remaining a real concern at the heart of South Asian unity. The 2019 Global Hunger Index ranks all the major South Asian countries in the "serious" category with Sri Lanka coming in 66th, Nepal 73rd, Bangladesh 88th, Pakistan 94th, and India 102nd out of 117 countries. Women suffer the most, as they have to bear the direct burden of gender inequality and, as a consequence, children experience malnutrition. The 2018 Global Nutrition Report states that on average 49 percent of reproductive-age women in South Asia have anemia, and the prevalence of stunting in the population of children under-five is 32.7 percent, which is significantly greater than the global average of 21.9 percent. There is no data available for those who identify as nonbinary, and there is a long way to go before the data gap can be filled despite the official recognition of "third" gender people in Pakistan, Bangladesh, India, and Nepal. Ironically, in spite of the official recognition of a nonheteronormative gender identity, homosexuality has yet to be decriminalized in most of South Asia with the exception of Nepal and India, having decriminalized homosexuality in 2007 and 2018, respectively. Chicha (2009) constate un « trou noir » dans la littérature en ce qui a trait au processus qui engendre une plus forte déqualification à l’endroit des immigrantes universitaires. Ce « trou noir » est considéré comme problématique. D’une part, le gouvernement québécois tente de mettre en place des politiques d’immigration qui recrutent des immigrants ayant un capital humain élevé dans l’espoir qu’ils s’insèrent facilement sur marché de l’emploi. D’autre part, la présence plus marquée de déqualification de ce bassin de main d’œuvre démontre un écart entre la volonté politique et la situation réelle en emploi de ces immigrants. Il semble donc exister un problème de discrimination systémique lorsqu’il est question de déqualification des travailleuses immigrantes. Par souci d’équité et dans l’espoir d’avoir une meilleure compréhension du processus menant à la déqualification des immigrantes les objectifs de cette thèse sont de 1- mieux saisir le concept de discrimination en emploi et 2- mettre en place des mesures mieux adaptées pour s’attaquer à cette discrimination.

Pour expliquer ce « trou noir », nous considérons que l’approche systémique est pertinente à cause de sa une vision holistique. Nous avons rencontré 52 immigrantes universitaires qui ont partagé leur parcours professionnel pré et post-migratoire. Les thématiques abordées touchaient à de nombreux sujets telles que leur formation, leur expérience professionnelle, leur stratégie d’unité familiale immigrante, leurs démarches concernant tant le processus de reconnaissance de leurs diplômes étrangers que leur insertion sur le marché de l’emploi, le climat de travail, etc.

Les résultats de cette recherche indiquent que la discrimination en emploi est toujours présente sur le marché de l’emploi au Québec. De plus, l’origine ethnique, tel que la couleur de la peau, affecte les attitudes, comportements et propos des acteurs du milieu du travail à l’endroit des immigrantes universitaires. L’application des typologies de Van Laer et Janssens (2011) et de Bonilla-Silva (2006) contribue à l’identification des attitudes, des comportements et des propos pouvant être considérés comme étant du racisme subtil.

L’un des avancements de cette thèse est l’amélioration du cadre d’analyse systémique afin de mieux comprendre les difficultés à l’emploi des immigrantes universitaires. Les différentes théories empruntées de la psychologie sociale telles que les théories de similarité attraction, de catégorisation sociale et de qualité d’échanges entre subordonné et supérieur (Roberson et Block, 2001) permettent de peaufiner ce cadre d’analyse systémique, puisqu’il permet de mieux saisir les relations, parfois complexes, qui peuvent s’établir entre les différents acteurs et résulter en de la discrimination flagrante ou subtile.

Queer studies is an extensive field that spans a range of disciplines. This volume focuses on education and educational research and examines and expounds upon queer studies particular to education fields. It works to examine concepts, theories, and methods related to queer studies across PK-12, higher education, adult education, and informal learning.

The volume takes an intentionally intersectional approach, with particular attention to the intersections of white supremacist cisheteropatriachy. It includes well-established concepts with accessible and entry-level explanations, as well as emerging and cutting-edge concepts in the field. It is designed to be used by those new to queer studies as well as those with established expertise in the field.

This course provides an overview of social justice theories in communication studies. As a discipline, communication draws from theories across the social sciences, humanities, and philosophy, leading to an eclectic mix of theory that is taken and applied to communicative issues. To get a foothold in communication theory, then, requires reading primary texts from outside the field, as well as applications of those texts within the field. Therefore, this course endeavors to provide a basis in critical theories of communication by connecting foundational theoretical readings with their use in critical/cultural studies of communication.

Social justice work in communication is intimately concerned with power. As such, we will be exploring how different scholars have conceptualized power inequities since what is often dubbed “the critical turn” in our field. Students will leave the class equipped with multiple theoretical lenses through which to investigate communicative issues of power, control, inequality, and oppression in our society. These theories will also provide the means to think through how communication can help us to build coalitions and relations that move social structures toward equality, justice, and liberation.

In 1980, three Republican women prisoners held in Armagh prison in Northern Ireland joined the hunger strike being conducted by male Republican prisoners in Maze Prison. Overshadowed by the fatal 1981 strike, the 1980 strike involved these women in Armagh, who challenged the traditional nationalist notion of the strong male warrior, while generating sympathy and solidarity across the globe, including with the far left and the women’s liberation movement in Britain. This article will look at how the left and the women’s liberation movement in both Britain and Ireland looked to portray these women within their competing narratives.

ABSTRACT
This research, situated at the junction of feminist, trans and disability studies, examines the limits of intersectional feminist analyses and the difficulties faced in their consideration of gender identity and ability through an analysis of two types of body modification: transsexuality and transability (voluntary disability acquisition). In response to the question “what are the limits of intersectional analyses and how can they be addressed?”, three objectives are proposed: 1) participate in the critical examination of specific limits of intersectional feminist analyses in order to diversify their axes through the consideration of gender identity and ability; 2) question the conceptual assumptions and cisgenderist and (cis)ableist privileges informing negative discourses around these body modifications and highlight points of convergence among feminist, transactivist and anti-ableist movements in order to encourage dialogue and solidarities among them; 3) provide feminist, trans and disability studies with an enriched model of intersectionality capable of addressing new claims for justice from oppressed groups, such as those of transsexual and transabled individuals. The negative discourses of certain feminists and other scientists regarding these body modifications are mapped and critiqued through a methodology combining archeological, genealogical and critical discourse analysis. The reflections presented here, inspired by poststructuralist and queer approaches, explore neither the “origins” of transsexuality and transability nor their motivations; this is a study of the negative discourses about these phenomena and the normative systems from which they originate. The result is an important contribution to theoretical, normative and political fields of knowledge: the examination of two “extreme” cases of body modification reveals the bodily normativities of dominant regimes, specifically cisgenderism and (cis)ableism, that remain as unrecognized in our societies as in our social movements.

RÉSUMÉ
Cette recherche se situe à la jonction des études féministes, trans et sur la production du handicap. Elle s’intéresse aux limites des analyses féministes intersectionnelles et leurs difficultés à considérer certains axes identitaires, telles l’identité de genre et les capacités, à travers l’analyse de deux cas de figure de modifications corporelles, soit la transsexualité et la transcapacité (transformation visant à acquérir un handicap). Cette thèse s’articule autour de la question suivante : quels sont les angles morts des analyses intersectionnelles et comment pouvons-nous y remédier? Pour répondre à cette question, cette thèse propose trois objectifs : 1) Participer aux questionnements critiques entourant certaines limites des analyses féministes intersectionnelles pour en diversifier les axes à partir de l’identité de genre et des capacités; 2) Remettre en question les présupposés conceptuels et les privilèges cisgenristes et (cis)capacitistes qui sous-tendent les discours négatifs entourant ces modifications corporelles et mettre en valeur les points de convergence entre les mouvements féministes, transactivistes et anticapacitistes pour instaurer des dialogues et des solidarités entre eux; 3) Fournir un modèle enrichi de l’intersectionnalité pouvant être déployé en études féministes, trans et sur la production du (trans)handicap, apte à répondre aux nouvelles revendications de justice de groupes opprimés, comme celles des personnes transsexuelles et transcapacitaires. À l’aide d’une méthodologie alliant l’analyse critique de discours, l’analyse archéologique et généalogique, les discours négatifs de certaines féministes et d’autres scientifiques sur ces transformations corporelles sont cartographiés et critiqués. Les réflexions présentées ici, s’inscrivant dans une approche poststructuraliste et queer, ne proposent pas une recherche des « origines » et des motivations de la transsexualité et de la transcapacité, mais plutôt une étude des discours négatifs vis-à-vis ces phénomènes et des systèmes normatifs qui sous-tendent ces discours. As the advent of the 'postmodern' and theoretically appointed 'postcolonial' ages have brought to the forefront of academic attention, the global history of First Peoples has been mired and desecrated by countless aspects of Judaeo-Christian colonialism and imperialism which have persisted far longer than they ever should have. And of course, as the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis posits that languages not only influence but may even entirely construct our realities and the perspectives they are formed from -something which colonial forces were obviously acutely aware of when they imposed linguistic hegemonies to overtake, erase, assimilate and replace First Peoples’ languages and beliefs with languages such as English, French and Spanish and the socio-political and religious realities embedded within them- it follows logically that the creative and activist translation of these colonial histories and the poetry, writings, myths and stories which were oftentimes partially born as an anticolonial reaction to them, as well as the cultural revival of ancient traditional practices and belief systems to counter these sordid realities, are necessarily a quintessential part of properly honouring these First Peoples and cultures of the Rainbow Tribes and Medicine Wheel, indeed to all of existence.


As such, self-translation is even moreso primordial to the emancipation from neocolonial realities Native, Métis, Inuit and multiethnic/diasporic peoples in general find themselves embedded within -much against their own will- since it allows for a direct expression of their  realities and experiences within eurocentrically linguistic constructs which, without their own anticolonial and activist backgrounds and the ability to self-determine the semantic fields and parameters of what is originally being expressed in their poetry, writings, stories and myths, has otherwise often been lost -or at the very least significantly distorted and/or corrupted/repurposed- by translators who, even with the best of intentions, could not possibly have fully rendered the depth, intensity, complexity and soulful nature of an experience which they had not personally lived, and had likely been quite detached from in terms of their understanding of it.

This dissertation analyzes the postfeminist tendencies and biopolitics in contemporary media practices by considering the pop culture exemplar, the Kardashian-Jenner family.

I met Kimberlé Crenshaw at the Sorbonne University in Paris in January 2019, at a conference organized by Marta Dell’Aquila and Eraldo Souza dos Santos to celebrate the thirtieth anniversary of intersectionality. Kimberly Crenshaw developed the notion of intersectionality in 1989 in her paper “De-marginalizing the Intersection of Race and Sex: A Black Feminist Critique of Anti-discrimination Doctrine, Feminist Theory and Antiracist Politics”. On that occasion, her goal was to challenge the limitations of anti-discrimination laws that looked at gender and race as separated and mutually exclusive categories. Over the past thirty years, intersectionality has become an essential analytical tool to explore how multiple structures of oppression shape individual vulnerability. In this interview, Kimberlé Crenshaw offers not only a crash course in intersectionality for our readers, but tells us why intersectionality is vital to transform the current political situation. In a majestic example of theoretical sophistication and simplicity, Crenshaw uses the notion of intersectional failure to explain the election of Donald Trump. It is not simply the resentment of a white working class that feels “left behind” which explains the electoral triumph of the far right, she argues. It is working class resentment rooted in male entitlement and white supremacy, which determines this victory. In this sense, the triumph of the far-right in countries such the United States or Italy that have an un-resolved history of white supremacy and fascism, can be seen as the result of a number of intersectional failures – when class consciousness doesn’t contest the logics of racism, when anti-racism doesn’t contest the logics of patriarchy, when feminism doesn’t contest the logic of racism, they end up reinforcing them all.

Disability studies and critical trauma studies are both deeply concerned with the social construction of meaning and identity. However, these disciplines often remain mutually disengaged, inadvertently overlooking shared mechanisms of oppression that foster stigma. This article explores the novel depiction of disability and trauma in the play Amy and the Orphans by Lindsey Ferrentino. Amy, a character with Down syndrome, challenges disability stereotypes by exercising autonomy; she is not solely defined by her disability or her experiences of abuse. The theatrical narrative is one of both disability and trauma, encouraging a nuanced reflection on the origins of stigma and revealing how theatre can be used as a tool of resistance to reclaim agency through performances that challenge conventional 'disability' stereotypes.

Despite the proclamations of the media from the late 1980s onwards that feminism is ‘over’ and that we were living in a postfeminist era of gender equality1, many commentators argue that there has been a more recent, resurgent interest in feminism in the UK2. This ‘fourth-wave’ has been characterised by growing numbers of new feminist organisations, online communities and activist campaigns3. However, to date, there is a lack of critical work on this ‘fourth-wave’4. This article aims to address this. We consider some contemporary trends within feminist theory and activism and scrutinise some of the socio-cultural, historical and political changes that have given rise to these. We also lend our own thoughts as to whether more recent developments are something to celebrate, for example, as arguably constituting progress from previous ‘waves’, or whether these should be a cause for concern. In particular, we examine the encroachment of neo-liberal values on feminism, the role of technology, intersectionality and so-called ‘identity politics’. We conclude by considering what the major challenges and questions facing feminists now are and what the goals of the feminist movement should be.

You care about difference. In this exigent mood we begin to rework reflexivity through disability and trauma studies. Using performative writing, we trouble you, me, and we in order to uncouple analytical rigor from individual bodies and identities. As we consider violence, injury, and ability, we complicate an imperative for personal disclosure. While continuing to insist on accountability to privilege, we highlight queer vulnerabilities, alternative representation, and non-normative emotion. We draw together readers and writers in a recursive textual process, a feminist ethic attentive to inequality and suffering. We call this methodological presence with others reflexive caring.

Intersectionality has increasing traction in interdisciplinary inquiry, yet questions remain about qualitative intersectional methods. In particular, scholars have yet to consider how to write qualitative research in the service of intersectionality. Drawing upon my disciplinary training in communication studies, I argue that the field’s theoretical grounding offers useful resources for advancing intersectional writing. Because communication theory posits that symbols both reflect and make reality, it resonates with an intersectional desire to simultaneously describe and transform the world through critical analysis. Using exemplars from communication scholars, I highlight how this interplay of approaches can advance identity politics and trouble identity categories. Furthermore this approach can help qualitative writers to link what some perceive to be distinct ‘levels’ of analysis. By discussing techniques for coupling reflexivity and voice, I make communication theory intelligible for intersectional writing and also invite communication studies to become more intersectional.

Taking issue with the erasure of the race in much of the contemporary (feminist) intersectionality scholarship, this essay examines a number of troubling patterns and trends which contribute to whiten, discipline and dilute an initially insurgent knowledge firmly rooted in black feminist thought and activism. The analysis reads these makeover efforts of intersectionality against the backdrop of the broader incorporation of various progressive struggles into the neoliberal governance of ›diversity‹ and minority difference, to which the questions of knowledge production and dissemination are integral. Special attention is given to sociology, as sociology stands out by its disciplinary defensiveness against minority generated counter-hegemonic knowledges, by its eagerness to restate the adequacy of its disciplinary structure and fundamental categories.

This manual can be used as a reference tool, as well as a practical instrument for training workshops. Its
content covers a theoretical and conceptual development of the topics and provides a series of exercises for group work in different learning activities.
The purpose of the book is to provide the tools necessary for including a perspective of gender, human rights and inter-culturality in social interventions with migrant women in situations of violence. This
cross-cutting perspective strengthens the effective access and exercise of migrant women’s rights.

Historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) have consistently functioned as engines of social change and racial uplift and are among the few places where Black culture is placed at the forefront, appreciated, and sustained. Today and in the future, it will be paramount for HBCUs to not only embody their eminent legacies of social change, but to also serve as fierce settings that will ultimately champion action-oriented change for Black communities and the society at large. This cannot happen if Black students with additional oppressed identities feel ‘othered’ or shamed among their own within these unique post-secondary environments. In these tentative moments following the election, this work provides a call and challenge to HBCUs to capitalize on their unique abilities to serve as spaces of refuge for Black students, so long as they embrace the full spectrum of Blackness present.

The article discusses the multiple discrimination, normalization and stigmatization experienced by deaf LGBT youth in Sicily, Italy, on the basis of a study of their everyday life (specifically school years and peer interactions). So far in Italy, very little attention has been paid to multiple discrimination and, specifically, to homophobic violence towards disabled individuals. It is, therefore, impossible to consider any valid sampling of the desired population and very few reports have been produced. The authors, a sociologist and a psychologist, carry out an analysis of the results obtained from interviews with 15 LGBT individuals recruited through social networks, thematic chats, and associations. This preliminary analysis aims at identifying the key arguments which could form the basis for future strategic inclusion programs and further research projects.

O presente artigo dedica-se a investigar a temática relativa às violências de gênero que, quando sobrepostas a questões raciais, manifestam-se de forma particularizada. A abordagem tem seu foco no campo dos afetos das mulheres negras e pousa o olhar sobre dois aspectos em especial: a solidão vivenciada por essas mulheres em vivências afetivas e a alta representatividade das mulheres negras nos índices de feminicídio no Brasil – contraposta à queda constante do número de vítimas brancas. O artigo tem como fio condutor a produção de autoras e autores do Brasil e do exterior que se dedicam a estudar o feminismo negro e questões interseccionais, a fim de situar o debate no campo teórico. São usados também relatórios de pesquisa recentes que fornecem dados para análise do fenômeno do feminicídio. Trabalha-se com a hipótese de que a violência simbólica direcionada à mulher negra manifestada em âmbito íntimo pode reverberar em outras espécies de agressão e que as opressões estruturais por ela sofridas podem se materializar, em última instância, em uma violência fatal.

The article examines the processes of identification of women born from mixed couples (one Italian and one foreign parent), to explain the complexity in the self-determination processes of women with non-hetero-normative sexuality living in multicultural families. Based on the intersectionality paradigm, we will analyse how biosocial categories such as sex, gender, sexual orientation, class, name, skin colour, family background may influence the self-definition identity processes and generate multiple discrimination. Inspired by Gloria Anzaldúa's thoughts, we will highlight how girls shun widespread heteronormative models not only of mainstream society, but of the LGBT community itself. We also applied a methodology used in non-formal education, which allowed us to explore how the women interviewed put different aspects of themselves to the test, negotiating them in the different scenarios of everyday life, in an attempt to counteract situations for which they can feel stigmatized and oppressed.

This research sought to deepen in the daily journeys taken by women in the urban environment to investigate and collect information that can contribute to the construction of knowledge in relation to their urban mobility experiences. After a literature review on the dimensions related to women's mobility in the urban environment, quantitative analyzes were carried out with data from two surveys, one on a large scale (Pesquisa OD) and other on a medium scale (on the traffic safety of university students with a focus in women). With the results, a qualitative and approximate observation of a group of eleven female university students was made to collect information about their experience and perceptions in relation to their displacements made in the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo. As a result, at first, it was expected that issues of insecurity and the fear of suffering some type of sexual violence would be the main lements highlighted by women. But the way they access the means of public transport, the poor quality of the public transport system, the time they travel, waiting at bus stops and terminals and subway and train stations, in addition to countless transfers, crossed this work. showing how important factors in the precautions taken by the students and the insecurity and fear felt by them. On another way, there was an indication of desire for autonomy and ways of coping with the limitations of urban mobility in the metropolis of São Paulo.

L’accès à l’espace public est une des expériences que les femmes font quotidiennement et qui est de mieux en mieux documenté. Cependant celui des femmes racisées, ayant migré avec leurs enfants et résidant en France dans des zones expulsables reste mal connu. La communication propose de plonger dans le quotidien mobile des mères, identifiées comme roms, en s’appuyant sur plusieurs cas ethnographiques et en adoptant une perspective intersectionnelle afin de mettre en lumière les rapports de pouvoir dans l’espace. Leur vie est structurée par la mobilité à la fois transnationale (migrations pendulaires), résidentielle (évacuations de bidonville) et quotidienne (accès aux ressources urbaines). Ressortissantes de l’Union européenne, elles ne sont pas soumises aux mêmes politiques migratoires que les migrantes extra-européennes. Expulsées des terrains ou des bâtiments qu’elles occupent illégalement, elles sont régulièrement en situation d’errance. Habitant en bidonville et identifiées comme roms elles sont discriminées dans l’accès au droit commun. Enfin, contrairement aux personnes qui migrent seules, elles sont en charge des enfants et du travail domestique.
La théorie féministe s’accorde à dire que la division sexuelle du travail se traduit par une division sexuelle de l’espace qui distingue d’un côté l’espace domestique dédié au travail reproductif et de l’autre, l’espace public dédié au travail productif. Les femmes, recluses dans le premier, ont un accès limité au second, appropriés par les hommes.
Le livre phare de Betty Friedan paru en 1963, La femme mystifiée, souvent identifié par la recherche féministe comme le jalon ouvrant les portes à la 2e vague, pose l’espace domestique comme un piège enfermant les femmes dont l’émancipation tiendrait principalement à l’accès à l’espace public et au travail salarié. En France, Jacqueline Coutras affirme en 1993 que l’assignation à l’espace domestique pour les femmes s’atténue grâce à l’accès à la motorisation et au travail salarié par les femmes, « rattrapant » ainsi le retard qu’elles avaient pris sur la mobilité par rapport aux hommes.
En s’appuyant sur un cadre théorique influencé par le black feminism, il s’agit de se demander comment les mères « roms » en bidonville articulent travail domestique et espace public.
Comment conjuguer maternité et mobilité dans le contexte urbain de l’Ile-de-France, structuré par les dominations de genre, de classe et de race ?
Après quelques précisions sur l’ethnographie que j’ai menée durant une période de 30 mois sur des bidonvilles d’Ile-de-France, j’exposerai différentes situations d’im/mobilités féminines. Il s’agira de préciser en quoi, dans un contexte de dominations croisées, accéder à l’espace public avec des enfants nécessite la mise en œuvre de quelques tactiques et contournements. Quand cela n’est pas possible, les femmes ont recours à la garde d’enfants. Cela engage à l’inverse l’immobilité d’autres femmes à l’échelle locale et transnationale révélant les liens de solidarité féminine et la dimension collective de la mobilité.

Through the exploration of gender's intersections with age, social class and race/ethnicity, this article introduces an intersectional lens to studies of female workers in the British creative and cultural industries (CCI). It presents intersectional analysis of data gathered in twenty-six qualitative interviews with contemporary British women documentarians who talk about their early career aspirations and perceived barriers to entry to the industry. Intersectionality, introduced to critical theory by African American scholars, holds that multiple axes of oppression mutually constitute different social positions and identities. The intersectional approach discussed in this article produces a nuanced picture of the small group of respondents, foregrounding a complex interplay between gender, race and ethnicity, class and region and thus demonstrating the limitations of the category "woman filmmaker" for researching professional disadvantage. However, rather than seeing their experiences as intersectional, the respondents tend to focus on one most salient social marker. Congruously with a large body of literature on systemic inequalities in British CCI, social class is the single most important factor shaping the beginnings of the respondents' careers. By bridging the gap between intersectionality as a theory and research practice, this article seeks to make a contribution to the broader debate about the employment of intersectional approaches in media studies.
