What's new?

* Councils: the vast majority of the data presented by Jacques Noret in the second edition of CPG IV (2018) have been introduced into the Clavis Clavium and are now freely available. This also means that all the letters that are part of the Council acts, like those by and to Pope Leo I (CPL 1656) or those by and to Pope Hormisdas (CPL 1683), have received an update and/or can now be found in the Clavis Clavium. New in CPG IV² and now in the Clavis Clavium are the inconoclastic council of Hiereia (a. 754) and the Concilium oecumenicum Nicaenum II (a. 787).

* Hagiographica: Robert Godding and Xavier Lequeux of the Société des Bollandistes have started the process of updating the Bibliotheca Hagiographica Latina and the Bibliotheca Hagiographica Graeca directly in the Clavis Clavium.

* Ioca monachorum: Prof. Charles D. Wright deserves special credit. He turned his attention to a rather small entry in the CPL, viz the Ioca monachorum (CPL 1155f), and reworked it into a delightfully detailed overview of all known recensions with up-to-date bibliography. This contribution will be the place to start for new research.

* Catenae: Prof. Hugh Houghton has started with the update of the Catenae in Novum Testamentum. The basis for this is the information provided by Jacques Noret in CPG IV², but updated and corrected on the basis of Prof. Houghton’s own research. New additions are CPG C116.4, C119.1, C137.7, C137.8, C137.9 & C169.1. More updates and additions are planned in the following months.

* Greek Apocalyptic Sources: András Kraft has started with the gradual introduction of the relevant data from his article An Inventory of Medieval Greek Apocalyptic Sources (c. 500-1500 AD): Naming and dating, editions and manuscripts, which appeared in Millenium, 15, 1 (2018). For the first results, we invite you to consult the entry on the Ultima Visio Danielis (CAVT 255).

* Athanasius of Alexandria: Annette von Stockhausen kindly introduced some much-needed bibliographic updates to a large number of writings by or related to Athanasius of Alexandria.

* As always we made some technical improvements to the interface of the OA search platform.

What's new?

* We have put a lot of effort into the further integration of data coming from different Claves. For example, the vast majority of letters by and to Pope Leo I (CPL 1656) and Cyril of Alexandria (from CPG 5301 onwards) have been updated and integrated with the information found in the part on the Concilia in CPG IV. Similarly, with the exception of some problematic entries, texts mentioned both in the Bibliotheca Hagiographica Latina and the Bibliotheca Hagiographica Graeca on the one hand, and in the different claves on the other, have now been merged. This integration is part of the ongoing effort to arrive at the situation where one text has one entry.

* Every letter in the Registrum epistularum by Pope Gregory I (CPL 1714) has received a separate entry.  The same is true for, among others, the letters by and to Siricius (CPL 1637), Innocentius I (CPL 1641), Zosimus (CPL 1644), Bonifatius I (CPL 1648), Caelestius I (link), Sixtus seu Xystus III (CPL 1655), Simplicius (CPL 1664), Gelasius I (CPL 1667), and last but by no means least, the letters by and to Augustine (CPL 262). In the process, information provided by the Clavis Patristica Pseudepigraphorum Medii Aevi is added, if possible. The integration of Machielsen's clavis will continue in the future.

* We would like to draw attention to the contributions by Dr Gianmario Cattaneo, who updated the entry on the Epistula ad Diognetum (CPG 1112), the hagiographical dossier on Auxentius presbyter in Bithynia, the entries on Theodore of Mopsuestia's Contra Iulianum (CPG 3865) and Fragmenta in Lucam (CPG 3842) and the dossiers on John of Scythopolis and Severus of Antioch.

* We made some technical improvements to the interface of the OA search platform

* We have added links to the Library of Latin Texts. Subscribers to the Library of Latin Texts will be able to access the full text by clicking the links in the Clavis Clavium.

The Powerpoint contains a short presentation of the Clavis Clavium-project, the project of making an integrated database of the Clavis Patrum Latinorum (CPL), the Clavis Patrum Graecorum (CPG), the Bibliotheca Hagiographica Latina (BHL) and the Bibliotheca Hagiographica Graeca (BHG), the Clavis Apocryphorum Veteris Testamenti (CAVT), and the Clavis Apocryphorum Novi Testamenti (CANT).
This is the presentation as it was shown during the workshop "Old Books and New Technologies: Medieval Books and the Digital Humanities in the Low Countries" (7 May 2021), organized by the KBR (the former Royal Library of Belgium).

Nineteen scholars have delved into the extremely rich literary legacy of the Byzantine world. The result is an equally rich mix of 16 studies, translations, and editions of an anonymous iambic canon on John Chrysostom, the letter Z of the Etymologicum Symeonis, an ascetic miscellany, some excerpts from the Florilegium Coislinianum and of texts by Eustathius, Athanasius, Maximus the Confessor, Ramon Lull, Metrophanes of Smyrna, Gregory of Nazianzus, and Titus of Bostra.

The contribution presents the first critical edition of Maximus the Confessor's Capita [XIII] de voluntatibus (CPG 7707.18). It replaces the 1917 edition by S. L. Epifanovič (cf. S. L. Epifanovič, Materialy k izučeniju žizni i tvorenij prep. Maksima Ispovědnika, Kiev, 1917, p. 64-65).

The contribution presents the critical edition of CPG 7707.38 and CPG 7697.26a + 7707.20. This is what remains of a collection of ἐρωταποκρίσεις of which Maximus the Confessor and Theodosius of Gangra were the protagonists. The edition of these fragments is preceded by a study of their manuscript tradition and the attribution to Maximus the Confessor.

The article presents the summary, the critical edition on the basis of the full manuscript tradition, and the first English translation of Maximus the Confessor's Tomos to Stephen of Dor against the Ekthesis. The text, numbered 15 among Maximus' Opuscula theologica et polemica (CPG 7697) is famous for the florilegium it features, which has clear similarities with the florilegia in the acts of the Lateran Council of 649.

In this contribution we present a new edition of Eulogius' so-called Dubitationes orthodoxi; the editio princeps of a fragment from his Adversus eos qui putant humanis conceptionibus veram theologiam christianam posse subiici; the editio princeps of a small fragment preserved in the famous Florilegium Achridense and some remarks on a number of other writings listed (or not) in CPG 6971 - 6979.

The contribution offers an in-depth analysis of the manuscript tradition and a new edition of the so-called Ad neophytos de patientia [CPG 7707.32]. With an attribution to four different authors (Gregory of Nazianzus, Maximus the Confessor, Ps. Macarius / Symeon and Clemens of Alexandria) this text has enjoyed quite some attention in scholarly research. However, the extant editions still left room for important improvement, both as concerns the stemma and as concerns the number of mss. collated. Moreover, for the first time also a further development of this text is edited, dubbed Traditio Maximiana alterata by us. It is preserved in a single manuscript now in Paris, but probably stems from 14th-century Thessalonica.

Critical edition of the whole dossier of Greek vitae and passiones dealing with Maximus the Confessor: BHG 1233m+n, 1234, 1235, 1236, 1236d and the passiones in the Synaxarium Constantinopolitanum and in Patmiacus 266. If all goes well also the Syriac vita will be reprinted with a short new introduction by S. Brock.

The edition will replace the old edition by P. Peeters in Analecta Bollandiana 51 (1933), p. 225-262. It will be based on a new collation of the one ms. still extant, will feature a detailed comparison with the source texts and an English translation. The first two elements are already finished. The English translation is being made.
