The use of rubric to support students’ competencies gradings is long being applauded in vocational education. However, the current assessment method in secondary school vocational education seems to be inauthentic, individualistic and outdated. The assessment criteria are in a checklist form and far from meeting the industrial’s needs. Students were assessed based on their ability to perform a certain set of skills and disregarding their affective skills such as communication, presentation and working in team. A self-developed authentic-based competency assessment rubric for a vocational subject in secondary school was developed in lieu to the latter. The rubric instruments and criteria were developed based on extensive literature reviews on students’ skills evaluation in vocational education settings. Findings from the reviews have led to selection of operational terms and formulation of rubric’s instruments. The rubric is expected to measure students’ competencies or skills in on four domains: Teamwork, Skills, Knowledge and Presentation. Each of the domain contains five assessment items with five level of ratings. There are three stages involved for the development and validation of the rubric. First, the development of instruments, second, the content validation by subject matter experts and finally, subject matter experts’ scores validation using Lawshe (1975) method. Content Validity Ratio (CVR) and Content Validity Index (CVI) were used to validate the instrument and measuring its reliability. The overall analyses show that the self-made authentic-based competency assessment instrument is reliable. The findings are important for researchers, teachers, assessors and policy makers especially taking rubric as an option for grading competency assessment for secondary school’s vocational education. There are possibilities into exploring the assessment criteria into meeting the current industrial’s needs and global standards.

This paper discusses the importance of holistic assessment in the teaching and learning process at all levels of education, both in schools and in higher education institutions. Redesigning classroom assessment for holistic learning to improve student learning is not a new idea. Educators conduct assessment for a variety of purposes such as determining the level of student academic achievement or identifying weaknesses and strengths of students. Educators need to be equipped with ways to maintain these processes to determine the quality of student achievement. Assessment should reflect the understanding that learning is a complex process by engaging a varied selection of techniques, comprising those that require real and authentic performance, utilising them over a period so as to disclose evolution, progress, and emergent steps of integration. The assessment should be continuous and balanced. Implementing holistic assessment benefits the students, teachers and stakeholders. Educato...

This paper compares how two universities, Iowa State University and the University of Saskatchewan, exploit a service-learning and authentic learning approach to instructional design. Both programs emphasize student engagement and responsibility, as well as projects that have social significance. At the same time, the courses offered by the two programs differ in significant ways. One program puts students in the role of project manager, while in the other the instructor plays the role of project manager. This proposal explores the intentions, the pedagogical and design decisions, and the implications of the two approaches for preparing instructional designers, and for informing the use of authentic learning approaches in ID programs elsewhere. 1. Purpose This paper presents two case studies from two different universities that adapted the experiential learning approach into their graduate instructional design (ID) courses. One is a Midwestern university in the United States which a...

Scientific Literacy (SL) is an important competency to deal with and keep up with the increasingly sophisticated technological developments. However, information about the SL of prospective gifted young scientists over 15 years old has not been widely revealed holistically. Therefore, this survey research aimed to investigate the SL performance of prospective gifted young scientists holistically and compare the SL performance based on the grade level. A total of 278 students from a public senior high school in Jombang Regency, East Java Province, Indonesia, participated in this research. They were asked to take the SL test with 18 essential question items. As a result, the participants still showed low SL performance (total success rate = 40). The one-way ANOVA test results indicated no significant difference in the participants' SL performance based on the grade level. Therefore, three recommendations were provided: teachers should use various learning models, SL should be an e...

This dataset contains demographic information of 355 respondents and a validated 32-items Stages of Concerns Questionnaire (SoCQ). The SoCQ questionnaire was developed based on the Concerns-Based Adoption Model (CBAM) which measures seven stages of concerns as the variables. They are unconcerned, informational, personal, management, consequence, collaboration and refocusing. The data was firstly tested with normality, followed by validity checking using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). It is useful for policy makers and stakeholders to have a thorough understanding about teachers’ concerns on the use of the e-learning platform and thus, design suitable interventions to smoothen the adoption process of using the technology. This set of data could be used in a multi-racial developing country for more complex analyses.

Competency-based assessment is an integral element in vocational education. It is a part of acknowledging student's progress at different level of skill-based learning stages. Therefore, school-based competency assessment must meet the need of the current industrial's needs in producing skilled and qualified workers. However, the current competency assessment method in secondary school's vocational education seems to be outdated and lacking of 21 st century skills. The assessment method is performance-based and focusses on technical skills, passive learning strategy, teacher-centred and product-oriented. An authentic-based competency assessment method was introduced as an intervention to complement the current assessment procedure with application of knowledge, skills and value in given real-world context. The intervention has integrated three new elements such as authentic tasks, teamwork and the use of rubric as student's competency assessment instrument. Students' perceptions regarding the intervention was compiled at the end of the intervention. Descriptive analysis was done on the quantitative data and open-ended questions' data were thematically analysed using an exploratory thematic analysis. Descriptive findings show that students prefer authentic-based assessment, satisfied with given scores and preferred working in group. Apart from this, thematic analysis from open-ended answers has yielded many themes that can be used by researchers and policy makers in the field of research. These outcome gives an important insight to researchers and policy makers into making decisions and planning their competency
