This paper attempts to understand the dynamic interrelationships and financial asset capabilities of Bitcoin by analysing several aspects of its volatility vis-a-vis other asset classes. This study aims to analyse the volatility dynamics of the returns of Bitcoin. An asymmetric GARCH model (EGARCH) is used to investigate whether Bitcoin may be useful in risk management and ideal for risk-averse investors in anticipation of negative shocks to the market (leverage effect). This paper also examines Bitcoin as an investment and hedge alternative to gold as well as NSE NIFTY using a multivariate DCC GARCH model. DCC GARCH models are also used to check whether correlation (co-movement) between the markets is time-varying, examine returns and volatility spillovers between markets and the effect of the outbreak of COVID-19 in India on the investigated markets. The results show that given the supply of Bitcoin is fixed, low returns realisation is equivalent to excess supply over demand where...

Vaccine hesitancy and refusal remain a major concern for healthcare professionals and policymakers. Hence, it is necessary to ascertain the underlying factors that promote or hinder the uptake of vaccines. Authorities and policy makers are experimenting with vaccine promotion messages to communities using loss and gain-framed messages. However, the effectiveness of message framing in influencing the intention to be vaccinated is unclear. Based on the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB), this study analysed the impact of individual attitude towards COVID-19 vaccination, direct and indirect social norms, perceived behavioural control and perceived threat towards South Indian millennials’ intention to get vaccinated. The study also assessed the effect of framing vaccine communication messages with gain and loss framing. Data was collected from 228 Millennials from South India during the COVID-19 pandemic from September to October 2021 and analysed using PLS path modelling and Necessary C...

E-tailers are now capable of customising prices for an individual buyer or a group of buyers who exhibit similar behavioural traits and perceived ability to pay. Tailoring prices based on personal information may evoke unanticipated reactions as it could infringe user's privacy and hurt fair price perceptions. To investigate the potential impact of positive and negative online personalised pricing situations, this study conducted a controlled experiment to observe the changes in consumer behaviour in a personalised pricing context. Seven hundred and twenty responses were collected from thriving online-active communities in India and Malaysia, both countries with high growth of e-commerce activities. Consumers' reaction towards fair price, customer loyalty, privacy concern, purchase satisfaction; and the influence of these constructs on post purchase behaviours such as repurchase intentions, revenge intentions and strategic purchase intentions were analysed using PLS SEM modelling. Results indicate online consumers in both countries have high privacy concerns, and as it increased, their repurchase intentions decreased correspondingly. Strategic purchase intentions and revenge intentions increased regardless of positive and negative purchase situations, while purchase satisfaction mediates fair price perceptions and repurchase intentions

BACKGROUND: The selection of students at academic institutions has been a challenging affair given multiple criteria that need to be considered by the institution. Additionally, multiple evaluators and decision makers are involved in the student selection process, rendering it inconsistent. The complexity and subjectiveness in such decisions making requires new and innovative approach in order to be more systematic and transparent. OBJECTIVE: This paper presents an innovative methodology for student selection for admission into an Institute of Higher Learning (IHL) using Fuzzy Analytical Hierarchy Process (FAHP) and Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS). Drawing on the success of using these methods in other fields, this study applies the technique and principles on student selection process. METHOD: Fuzzy Analytical Hierarchy Process (FAHP) is used in determining the weights of the criteria by the decision makers which avoids the vagueness and inco...

In line with the law of attraction, physical attractiveness has been widely used in marketing as well as advertising due to its potency in persuading consumers to take action. However, would physical attractiveness of a fitness trainer influence gym goers’ intention to exercise? This question motivated this research. Based on recent literature reviews, several research constructs were identified to form a research framework to investigate the physical attractiveness phenomena in the fitness industry. Hypothetically, the impact of the physical attractiveness of a fitness trainer on gym goers’ exercise intention is postulated to be mediated by trainer’s perceived expertise, trustworthiness, likeability and perceived health. Questionnaires were administered among gym-goers from 10 randomly selected fitness centres across three districts of Melaka State in Malaysia, and 192 final sample data were obtained. Data analysis reveals fitness trainer’s perceived expertise and likeability signi...

Gym-goers often socially compare themselves with their trainers as they strive to look as attractive as their fitness trainers. The aim of this study was to better understand this phenomenon in the fitness industry. Relying on social comparison theory and social identity theory, self-identification with a physically attractive fitness trainer was posited to have a strong mediating effect on the relationship between appearance motive, weight management motive and gym-goers’ intention to exercise. The moderation effects of gym-goers’ age and gender in the direct relationships between appearance motive, weight management motive and exercise intention were also examined. The primary outcome of this study revealed that gym-goers who were influenced by appearance and weight management motives are more likely to identify with physically attractive fitness trainers. Additionally, gender significantly moderates the relationships between appearance motive, weight management motive and exercis...

This paper is an attempt to investigate the existence of long run dynamics between inflation and unemployment in Hungary through a structured cointegration approach and vector error correction model. Using the monthly data of inflation and unemployment in Hungary, this study shows the presence of a long-term relationship between inflation and unemployment. The cointegration test results prove the existence of a long run dynamics between these variables and the vector error correction model depicts that the variables would adjust to long run equilibrium path quickly in case of short run disturbances to the model. The results stand in contrast with the cases of many of the developed countries like USA where recent studies proved that the long run relationships between these two variables are vanishing.

Trade has played a crucial role in the emergence of developing economies. The global emergence of India is also linked to its role in global trade. In this context, the European Union and India initiated talks for a free trade agreement known as the Bilateral Trade and Investment Agreement (BTIA). However, this agreement has failed to materialise due to various challenges and disputes. Against this backdrop, the present study attempts to trace the existing pattern of trade relations between India and the EU and provide a preliminary analysis of the nature of trade in this proposed region. A modified gravity equation and indicators of regional trade interdependence have been estimated. The results indicate that trade within this region is in line with certain predictions of the gravity model. Additionally, it also indicates that such an agreement has little potential for expanding trade and might even result in ‘unnatural trade’. Thus, it provides evidence for the argumentthat India ...

The purpose of the study is to investigate the phenomenon of omni-channel marketing initiatives of online marketing companies, particularly those who use ‘click and collect’ option as a product delivery and fulfilment means. Research variables including urban consumer’s online trust, perceived usefulness, product risk and financial risk towards their acceptance of click and collect e-tailing were identified measured and analysed using Partial Least Square path modelling. The urban working online consumers are of particular interest in this study due to their hectic work schedule which makes product delivery fulfilment a problem for this segment to purchase online. A quantitative survey research was carried out and research data was collected from large cities with urban working populations in Malaysia. The findings indicate strong relationship between urban consumers’ online trust and perceived usefulness to their acceptance of click and collect e-tailing as a means for online order...

In a dynamic global environment of increased economic interdependence, nations are more than ever seeking to remove barriers to trade, despite growing trends of protectionism. In this context, India and the EU-27 have initiated talks for the establishment of a Bilateral Trade and Investment Agreement (BTIA) in an attempt to bring their economies together. However, after 16 rounds of negotiations, the failure to conclude this agreement has raised questions regarding the benefits of the agreement to India. This study attempts to examine the current trade scenario and the effects of the proposed regional trade agreement by estimating a structural gravity model. This study employs the Poisson Pseudo Maximum Likelihood (PPML) estimator for analysing the trade-creation and trade-diversion effects of the BTIA to overcome the shortcomings of ordinary least square (OLS) estimators. For the empirical analysis, the merchandise export data from the Gravity database has been taken for a period o...

In order to meet the rising global demand for food and to ensure food security in line with the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goal 2, technological advances have been introduced in the food production industry. The organic food industry has benefitted from advances in food technology and innovation. However, there remains skepticism regarding organic foods on the part of consumers, specifically on consumers’ acceptance of food innovation technologies used in the production of organic foods. This study measured factors that influence consumers’ food innovation adoption and subsequently their intention to purchase organic foods. We compared the organic foods purchase behavior of Malaysian and Hungarian consumers to examine differences between Asian and European consumers. The findings show food innovation adoption as the most crucial predictor for the intention to purchase organic foods in Hungary, while social lifestyle factor was the most influential in Malaysia. This study aims at examining the short-run and long-run dynamic linkages among exchange rates and stock market index in India through a structured cointegration and Granger causality tests. Daily exchange rates of USD, EUR, CNY, JPY, and GBP to INR along with the daily movement of NSE NIFTY for a period spanning 13 years from 6 September 2005 to 31 December 2018 were used for the analysis. The results reveal that there is no evidence for a stable long-run relationship between NSE NIFTY and the exchange rates under study. However, the VAR-based Granger causality test shows that USD, JPY, and CNY have short-run causal relationship with NSE NIFTY. The NSE NIFTY also seemed to have an influence on USD expressed in terms of Indian rupee. The impulse response analysis further supports the results of the Granger causality test and provides information on the time required for the NSE NIFTY index to recover from a shock caused by the fluctuation in exchange rates.

With the rapid advancements in the Electronic Commerce sector, modern consumers are becoming increasingly aware of the prospects of the various pricing strategies, which have made their purchase decisions more sophisticated. Recent literature portrays an increased tendency among online shoppers to track product prices and wait for price markdowns prior to making their purchase decisions. This act of consumers is seen as strategic purchase behaviour, which is necessary for sellers to be aware of and frame their counter-strategies accordingly to prevent potential loss of revenue. This study aims at analyzing and measuring crucial factors that influence price tracking among online consumers. These include shopping experience, fair price perceptions and awareness about dynamic pricing. Using PLS SEM, this study also analyses the moderating effect of fair price perceptions on the overall shopping experience and price tracking behaviour of consumers. Statistical results reveal all three factors have significant direct and positive influence on price tracking behaviour and the moderation effect is significant and negatively influences consumer price tracking behaviour

Many studies in the wake of the COVID 19 pandemic have shown that millennials are reluctant to wear face masks while they are out in public. This poses serious threats to the community, especially to the vulnerable population with comorbidities. Addressing this issue, this study examines the effectiveness of a self-interest statement, collective interest statement, and legal enforcement statement in motivating millennials to wear a mask in public. This study collected data through online survey from Millennials in India and uses a t-test with Welch Approximation to compare the results of the three statements with a control text. The results show collective interest statement was more effective in motivating millennials to wear masks. Reflecting on this finding, the study proposes that authorities and media could frame their advertisements, campaigns and awareness programmes by emphasizing the health of family and friends to motivate millennials to wear face masks in public

Background/Purpose: The effectiveness of a Business School depends on the extra role behaviours or Organ-isational Citizenship Behaviour (OCB) of its committed academics. The social exchange theory postulates that employees tend to display OCB when they know how their organisation would treat them. As B-School academics’ inclination towards OCB is less understood, this study examines the interaction between Procedural Justice (PJ), Perceived Organisational Support (POS) and Organisational Citizenship Behaviour (OCB) among B-School academics. Methods: A survey was carried out to collect data from B-School academics, 378 responses were collected from B-Schools from the state of Kerala, India. Data validity and reliability analyses, and direct and indirect effects of research variables were tested using Partial Least Square (PLS) path modelling. Results: The results indicate PJ positively influences POS as well as dimensions of the OCB for B-School academics. Contrary to previous OCB s...

This study investigates discretionary earnings management practices, tracing the changes over the years in selected top performing and highly liquid listed Indian firms. It empirically measures the impact of corporate governance, financial legislation and global reporting standards on the firms’ earnings management practices. The study analyses a sample of 712 firm-year data comprising 89 listed Indian companies across 7 different sectoral indices of the National Stock Exchange of India (NSE) over 8 years (2011–2018). The Modified Jones model was used to compute Discretionary Accruals to measure Earnings Management based on data obtained using Bloomberg terminals. Statistical results and plots generated in Stata offer evidence that instances of earnings management have significantly reduced after the enactment of the Companies Act 2013 and the adoption of Indian Accounting standards which are converged with the IFRS. Findings suggest that services firms are engaging in relatively hi...

The recession in India and the UK peaked in 2017 due to the implications of new policy initiatives. The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic at the beginning of 2020 intensified the crisis, causing a drastic decline in aggregate demand and output. India and the UK have resorted to monetary and fiscal stimulus packages to face the economic crisis. This study investigated the inflation–unemployment dynamics during the recession and COVID-19 times in India and the UK. Using a generalized additive model (GAM), the results of this study revealed that the recession had given way to stagflation in India. In contrast, in the UK, it has led to a more severe recession in the short-run. During the downturn, policy initiatives aggravate the recession and eventually turn to stagflation in India due to inflation caused by the weak supply side. the short-run. During the downturn, policy initiatives aggravate the recession and eventually turn to stagflation in India due to inflation caused by the weak supply side. However, in the UK, the policy initiatives during this downturn pushed the economy into a deeper recession due to reduced demand. The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic has had a similar recessionary impact on both economies. A time horizon based recovery plan is suggested to help the economies recover from
stagflation and even deeper recession. This framework could enable policymakers to choose the right path of recovery within the shortest possible time.

An efficient portfolio is a well-diversified portfolio that gives the investor opportunities to earn money and provide cover against risks. Understanding the intersectoral linkages and correlations among various sectors in a stock market will help an investor to diversify the portfolio and reduce risk efficiently. This study aims at examining the underlying linkages and correlations among eight sectors in the Indian National Stock Exchange (NSE) using a Granger causality test under VAR environment. The results of the study based on nine years' data from 2009 to 2018 show that an effective portfolio can have two classifications-stocks from Pharma and Media as group one (defensive stocks) and picks from IT, Bank, Financial Services, Realty, Auto and FMCG sector as group two (somewhat Cyclical). The study further proves that the usual definition for cyclical and defensive sectors have undergone some profound changes.

This motivated the current study to assess the rate of peer-to-peer technology pervasiveness in historical city tourism, particularly for hotel booking using Airbnb app. This research investigates the factors that predict tourists’ behavioural intention to use Airbnb app when they travel to the historical city of Malacca in Malaysia by adopting the Extended Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT2) model and by critically evaluating the exhaustiveness of the theory to measure tourists’ use of a mobile app. Partial Least Square analysis was used to test the research model, construct path model and to validate research hypotheses. The results from a sample of 200 tourists who visited and stayed in Malacca show that price value and social influence have high significant positive influence on their behavioural intention to use Airbnb app when booking accommodation in the historical city. In contrast, hedonic motivation and habit were found not significant, potentially due to the short-term and occasion-specific usage of Airbnb app not forming enjoyment in the process of usage, which raises concerns on applicability and relevance of UTAUT2 theory to measure user adoption of a mobile app for tourism. A peculiar finding in the study is the significant negative influence of facilitating condition to behavioural intention, for which we explain a plausible cause in the paper.

Objective-This study examines consumer attitudes and reactions towards personalised pricing strategies in a negative and positive hypothetical purchase context. Methodology/Technique-The data was collected from 250 respondents from India through a set of two structured questionnaires, each one comprising either a positive or negative purchase scenario. Partial Least Square based Structural Equation Modelling (PLS SEM) was used to analyse the data. Findings-The results of the study imply that the consumers are concerned about the usage of their personal data for price customisation which reduces their repurchase intentions and increases the reprisal intention. The results also depict that a loyal customer base reacts positively to some extent to the personalised pricing strategy.
