This volume presents a range of research approaches to the exploration of ageing during a pandemic situation. One of the frst collections of its kind, it offers an array of studies employing research methodologies that lend themselves to replication in similar contexts by those seeking to understand the effects of epidemics on older people. Thematically organised, it shows how to reconcile qualitative and quantitative approaches, thus rendering them complementary, bringing together studies from around the world to offer an international perspective on ageing as it relates to an unprecedented epidemiological phenomenon. As such, it will appeal to researchers in the feld of gerontology, as well as sociologists of medicine and clinicians seeking to understand the disruptive effects of the recent coronavirus outbreak on later life.

As part of counteracting the effects of the COVID-19 epidemic, at the beginning of 2021, the possibility of vaccinating residents and staff of nursing homes (DPS), who found themselves in the first group covered by the National Immunization Plan, was introduced. The level of this vaccination was and is surprisingly high, especially compared to other social groups. In connection with access to vaccinations, it is the DPS managerial staff who are first obliged to build a vaccination system for residents and employees, closely related to other legal regulations relating to the functioning of the institution at this difficult time. With the introduction of the possibility of vaccination against COVID-19, and thus the exceptionally high vaccination rate of residents, there appeared issues of a praxeological, legal, ethical and medical nature that should be presented in the context of the description of the process of protecting residents and DPS employees in the COVID era. The goal of this article is to present a broad analytical perspective for the situation of the participation of DPS residents in the National Vaccination Program, along with the presentation of sensitive issues and the consequences of the preventive and protective action for social issues, taking into account ethical, legal, economic and psychological issues. The article is presenting the most recent data on vaccination and the epidemic situation in the context of residents and employees of selected social welfare homes and discusses the broad context of implementing the vaccination in these institutions.

The issue of the elderly people’s rights has been discussed more and more often in the broader context of human rights. There is much evidence from social life that these rights are not being respected to the extent they should be. Securing and respecting the rights of older the elderly is becoming a challenge for state authorities that uphold human rights and create the directions of social policy for the rights protection. It is especially important as the elderly people due to their age, health status, weakened social position, rarely become advocates of their own interests. They are victims of an unobvious and often invisible process of marginalization and self-exclusion from an active social life. The aim of this article is to sketch the phenomenon of the marginalization of the elderly in the context of mechanisms related to their functioning on the one hand, and age, and on the other to social attitudes towards seniors. There are presented the elderly people’s rights and basic conditions for the rights to be respected..

Supported housing is a social service that is slowly making its way into the reality of Polish social welfare. It fits in with all changes of a de-institutionalization nature. Experts are looking for the Polish specificity of this service by creating its standards, as well as various pilot programs implementing assisted housing at the local government level. In search of inspiration, it is worth reaching for practices used in other countries. In some of them such systems have been functioning for over a dozen years and may become a model and good practice. This article aims to provide a brief overview of selected assisted housing systems in Europe and beyond. It introduces the assumptions and understanding of assisted housing, as well as its addressees - including adults on the autism spectrum (ASD) - how it is organized and financed. The perspective of accompanying services and the scale of its dissemination are also shown. Introducing foreign practices, the article proves that ass...

With a focus on the case of Poland, where an aging population poses a crucial challenge for the state’s social, family, and gerontological policy, this book explores ageing as a personal and social phenomenon, considering the ways in which the experience of ageing is shaped by younger generations’ attitudes, government support policies, local initiatives undertaken help older people stay active, and the ways in which the elderly themselves understand their own mortality. Employing demographic, philosophical, legal, psychological, gerontological perspectives, it emphasises activities that can support older adults locally or nationwide and proposes the development of a social policy and social attitudes that can facilitate changes in the social perception of aging, together with a redistribution of resources for older adults. As such, it will appeal to scholars across the social sciences with interests in ageing and the lifecourse, as well as those who wish to support older adults with concrete solutions and familiarize themselves with the aging process from an individual and social perspective

Dying and death are the very universal and belied phenomena same time. They bring so called borderline states on as the social life facts. It affects on such an social life aspects as social ties, social exclusion, supporting and helping. Social work has much to do in the last aspect, because it has the potential to “liven up” social resources in individual and group functioning. The aim of this article is to show the social worker meaning and range of actions confronting death and dying. The three sorts of social work are distinct: 1) social work with people who die socially 2) social work with dying people 3) social work with mourners. There are also recommendations for scientific researches (methods, subjects, and themes) for those who want to study death and dying in social context, including social work specific.
