in recent decades, archaeology has undergone a process of deep transformation and epistemological refounding. A global and contextual vision has been succeding in the reading of stratified landscapes through a multidisciplinary study of artefacts and ecofacts, in order to reconstruct the relationships between society and the environment. Thus understood, archaeology also aims at contributing to the construction of 'place consciousness' and the emergence of 'heritage communities' by fostering participation and forms of social protection of territorial heritages.

The archaeological researches carried out in Southern Italy enabled to gather a great and remarkable amount of data over the ‘end of villas’ and the features of the rural settlement during the early middle age. Often, the abandonment of rural dwellings caused the spoliation of spaces through systematic and organized operations of stripping and re-use of flooring, walls’ coverings, ceilings, furniture and pipes. Ceramic kilns, sedimentation basins for clay, blast furnaces for metals and limestone were installed These operations had been traditionally interpreted as connected to marginal forms of re-occupation. In many cases, these forms of settlement grew in the same areas, yet developed a good level of material culture and crafting activities, beside agriculture and farming. Representatives of the new religious and laic elites and public authorities were recognized, as the sponsors of these activities.

uClassical archaeology has its origins in the antiquaria, such as art history, which it has long been identified with. From this origins, archaeology has acquired a site-centric attitude toward the territory which still survives despite the discipline recognises the stratigraphic, topographic and typological analysis among its methodological cornerstones making use of advanced and ‘hyper-specialized’ technologies for the reconstruction of the site context, namely the territory. The main challenge for the contemporary archaeology is, therefore, in looking at ‘people beyond things‘, as summarised in the famous words of Sir Mortimer Wheeler: “the archaeological excavator is not digging up things, he is digging up people”. To which we should add the way the traces of past people are interpreted by today’s people, who attribute those ‘things’ different meanings and values. The paper addresses this issue with a focus on the protection system for cultural heritage and landscape in Italy, w...

This paper deals with the bioarchaeological researches on ovine transhumance in Apulia from the Late Antiquity to the Medieval Age, with particular regard to the contribution of the zooarchaeological researches. By integrating historical, epigraphic, archaeological and bioarchaeological data it is now possible to re-enact the development and the characters of the sheep/goat movements and the transhumance products, such as wool and milk, from the 4th to the 15th c. A.D. Archaeobotanical and archaeoantropological data indicate that Apulian landscape was characterized by uncultivated areas (woods, marshlands or pasture) from Roman to the Late Antique Ages; zooarchaeological analysis propose the continuity of sheep/goat breeding until the Middle Ages, in spite of some changes, with a prevalent and continuous wool production activity. In this way the study of faunal remains can integrate the knowledge by new evaluation elements such as the mortality and the periodical slaughtering, with ...
