Georg Jellinek is known as one of the most prominent representative of German legal positivism. This article aims at identifying and discussing the more theoretical-political connotation of Jellinek’s thought with a particular focus on his liberal inspiration. According to the perspective of the history of political thought, this article shows how some intellectual premises to Jellinek’s liberalism take shape and emerge from a series of young Jellinek’s writings on history of philosophy and history of ideas.

The essay aims at historically analysing Hans Kelsen’s theory of parliamentary democracy as it was developed between 1920 and 1932. I will seek to show how Kelsen elaborated a discourse on democracy which identified representative system, guarantees of civil and political rights, protection of minorities, dialectical relationship between majority and minority within the legislative body, political compromises, party pluralism and relativism as the key elements of that particular system. Unlike the two prevailing interpretative approaches to Kelsen’s political thought (i.e. Political philosophy and Philosophy of Law), I will adopt the perspective of the History of Political Thought, which means that I will investigate Hans Kelsen’s interpretation of the essence and value of democracy in relation to the concrete historical and political dimension he referred to. In doing so, I will seek to emphasize how Kelsen’s main political works of that time are conceptually oriented against speci...

The article addresses the concept of "social homogeneity" within the work of one of the most interesting jurists and political thinkers of the Weimar period: Hermann Heller. The aim is to discuss such a concept as his personal reflection on the Weimar crisis and as an interesting point of view about the never-ending issue for democratic governments and societies of how to reach a compromise between social plurality and political unity.

Georg Jellinek is known as one of the most prominent representative of German legal positivism. This article aims at identifying and discussing the more theoretical political connotation of Jellinek's thought with a particular focus on his liberal inspiration. According to the perspective of the history of political thought, this article shows how some intellectual premises to Jellinek's liberalism take shape and emerge from a series of young Jellinek's writings on history of philosophy and history of ideas.

Isaiah Berlin and Eric Voegelin seem not to have much to share in common as political thinkers. Instead, in this article we want to show how both used the concept of "monism" to explain the essence of totalitarianism. The article shows also how both elaborated on the concept of monism by critically refleccting on a certain part of Enlightenment tradition, 19th century Positivism and Marx' political thought.

After the first volume on Monisms and Pluralisms in the History of Political Thought, the present work aims at further broadening our reflection on the concepts of monism and pluralism beyond Isaiah Berlin's popular dichotomy, while being conscious of how powerfully they penetrated into our language and society. With this purpose the authors of the essays here collected addressed a series of social and political models having monist and/or pluralist connotation, while showing how — in historical terms — the ideal connection between pluralism-liberty and monism-lack of it, which is generally taken for granted, becomes more nuanced and problematic. In this sense, the present work wants to show how just the History of social and political models offers us a series of diversified pluralisms and diversified monisms. A kind of achievement which might be useful in our time, characterized by a sort of attitude towards easy generalizations.
