This book presents a documentation and analysis of Harsini, the language variety spoken by the people of Harsin, a small urban centre located in south-east Kermānshāh Province, western Iran. The main features of phonology and morphosyntax are outlined, and an extensive corpus of transcribed spoken texts, recorded in situ, is also provided, together with a lexicon. The book also includes comparative notes and discussion of the place of Harsini within Laki, and its relationship to Southern Kurdish. The bulk of studies on the verbal system of Kurdish address alignment and agreement patterns in past transitive constructions, while comparatively little research has been devoted to a general description of Tense, Aspect, and Mood (TAM) distinctions across Kurdish varieties. Starting from the observation that Southern Kurdish (SK) dialects seem to differ in the structure and functioning of certain sections of their verbal system—both reciprocally and in comparison with Northern Kurdish (NK) and Central Kurdish (CK)—this chapter provides an analysis of the subset of tense/aspect forms used in past-time domains, intending to define regional variation and continuity in their formal and functional properties. Comparative remarks will help contextualize preliminary findings on SK in a broader, cross-cluster framework.

The tales of the type “Innocent Persecuted or Unfortunate Heroine” have long been recognised as one of the most characteristic genres of female storytelling worldwide. However, scholarly accounts on the diffusion of this kind of fairy tales in the oral traditions of the Iranian cultural area are few and mostly based on Persian language materials (cf. Elwell-Sutton 1969). This contribution aims to complement and elaborate on previous observations on the form, symbolic dimensions and traditional contexts of performing this peculiar group of narratives (including ATU 311, 327A, 403, 408, 480, 706C, 707 and 510A/B) through the comparative evaluation and analysis of a folktale corpus collected in Southern Kurdish-speaking regions of western Iran and eastern Iraq.

The present contribution is a first step of an ongoing investigation on the conceptualisation of “stupidity, foolishness, madness” in Iranian, as a selected case-study for an assessment of the controversial role played by phonosemantic/ideophonic paradigms in lexical production and areal diffusion of cognate words. The discussion will challenge the commonly- accepted interpretation of the Young Avestan term mūra - as prototypically referring to mental/cognitive impairment, based on a review of the attempts at etymological reconstruction and a closer scrutiny of disregarded evidence from Middle and New Iranian.

Laki is a Northwest Iranian language spoken by both settled and nomadic people in the area of west Iran unofficially known as Lakestān, wedged between the Kurdish and Lori ethnolinguistic continua. This paper presents a popular legend in the Kākāvandi variety of Laki, giving an interesting insight into folk beliefs and practices related to the emāmzāde of Šāhzāde Moḥammad, a shrine located in the rural village of Darb-e Gonbad (Northern Lorestān). The text is accompanied by concise dialectological and lexical notes.

In the history of research on the ‘Cinderella Cycle’ (ATU 510), the variants pertaining to the subtype B (e.g. L’orza, Peau d’Asne, Cap o’ Rushes, Allerleirauh, Maria di legno) have received much less attention than those of the subtype A (e.g. La gatta Cennerentola, Cendrillon, Aschenputtel). This contribution presents two versions of ATU 510B (Nameyna ‘the felt-made girl’ and Čuwīna ‘the wooden girl’) collected in the Southern Kurdish-speaking region of West Iran, aiming to provide new material for the study of this tale type in the narrative traditions of the Iranian world.

This contribution provides an overview of the current state of knowledge on the dialectology of Southern Kurdish (hereafter SK). The introductory paragraphs discuss the concept of SK, survey existing sources and briefly address core issues of terminology. The bulk of the study reviews Fattah’s (2000: 9) proposed dialect classification and complements it with the evaluation of language data from older sources, the author’s own research in Kermānshāh Province and other documentation activities recently carried out in the SK-speaking area, sketching possible directions for future research.

La letteratura di viaggio europea, specialmente all’apice della sua produzione e circolazione nel XIX sec., ci restituisce numerose descrizioni di donne kurde e dei loro usi e costumi. La posizione e il ruolo della donna nella società kurda erano aspetti particolarmente interessanti per i primi osservatori europei, poiché rappresentavano – nella loro visione fortemente etnocentrica e influenzata da alcuni preconcetti sulla natura delle “società primitive” – un metro di giudizio utile a valutare il grado di civilizzazione (o di primitività) dei gruppi umani con cui entravano in contatto, attraverso il loro confronto con l’ethos europeo dell’epoca. Lo stereotipo ricorrente in queste descrizioni tratteggia figure femminili dai caratteri molto più positivi rispetto a quelli attribuiti alla loro controparte maschile. La donna kurda viene presentata generalmente come: 1) diversa dalle altre donne "orientali", sia nei costumi che nello status sociale; 2) libera, fiera e intelligente, dotata di diritti simili a quelli degli uomini; 3) dedita alla casa e alla famiglia, capace di sostituirsi agli uomini in loro assenza; 4) forte e battagliera, pari agli uomini nelle capacità militari. La riproposizione di questo immaginario nel dibattito nazionalista sulla “questione femminile” in Kurdistan a partire dagli inizi del XX sec. ne determinerà la riproduzione e sopravvivenza fino all'epoca contemporanea.
Sebbene non manchino similitudini con le celebrazioni del capodanno nel resto del mondo iranico, le tradizioni popolari kurde del Newroz/ نەورۆز preservano specificità di grande interesse storico-culturale. Accanto alle rievocazioni... more
Sebbene non manchino similitudini con le celebrazioni del capodanno nel resto del mondo iranico, le tradizioni popolari kurde del Newroz/ نەورۆز preservano specificità di grande interesse storico-culturale. Accanto alle rievocazioni pubbliche delle mitiche gesta del fabbro Kawa (kurd. Kawayê hesinger/کاوەی ئاسنگەر ), cui è legata l’etnogenesi dei kurdi, esistono pratiche di tipo performativo meno note – sopravvissute nel Kurdistan iraniano e iracheno almeno fino alla metà del XX sec. – che prevedono l’installazione temporanea, per il periodo di passaggio tra il vecchio e il nuovo anno, di un re fittizio (kurd. mîrmîrên/میرمیرێن – pers. mir-e nowruzi "emiro di capodanno"). In questa e altre celebrazioni locali si ravvisano curiosi parallelismi sia con le sostituzioni regali del mondo antico, che con le tradizioni carnevalesche del medioevo europeo.
