In fact, while we must wait for the seventeenth century for etchings of the ‘Blessed Father’ that were intended and destined for serial circulation (one always confined, however, within the walls of convents and monasteries), here we are also concerned with very rare exempla of earlier depictions, images initially connected to the publication of hagiography, collections of sermons, or volumes dedicated to the history of the Order. The discovery of important never–published documents regarding Saturnino Gatti (1463–1518), painter and sculptor from L’Aquila, presumably trained in the Florence of Lorenzo the Magnificent in and around the workshop of Verrocchio, is the reason for a closer look at the art of L’Aquila during the Renaissance. A series of payments document and allow scholars to date a number of works undertaken by Saturnino ad annum, whose chronology previously oscillated across a fairly large time span. As a result, it is possible to date the execution of one of his best–known works, Madonna Enthroned with Child and Angels, destined for Palazzo della Magistratura, L’Aquila, to the end of 1505. Moreover, it was found that in 1508, there was a city gonfalone (banner) painted by the artist (today lost; perhaps the same that was “restored” in 1528 by Cola dell’Amatrice) and many other works, including coffered ceilings, banners, painted horns, panels, shields and coats of arms. In addition, in 1510, Gatti would collaborate, or work «in chompagnia», with the young Francesco da Montereale (circa 1475–1549, documented from 1508) on numerous temporary structures, a collaboration that explains the evident stylistic similarities between the two. Finally, and particularly noteworthy, beginning in 1518, are the records found of multiple municipal commissions given specifically to Francesco da Montereale. Among these the banner for the church of Santa Maria di Collemaggio stands out. The documentation is direct and unequivocal proof of da Montereale’s confirmation, after Saturnino’s death, as official painter for the Magnificent Chamber of L’Aquila. italianoIl ritrovamento di importanti documenti inediti su Saturnino Gatti (1463-1518), pittore e scultore aquilano formatosi presumibilmente nella Firenze laurenziana intorno alla bottega del Verrocchio, ha reso necessario un nuovo approfondimento sull’arte all’Aquila nel Rinascimento.

However, in this production it is possible to find some paintings worthy of consideration that, in spite of all, have arrived to the present time in good condition. Among them two works by an unknown painter, located in the National Museum of Abruzzo, deserve special attention: one represents ‘Blessed John of Capistrano and stories of his life’ and the other ‘Saint Francisco of Assisi receiving stigmata’. In the passage of time these board paintings have been the object of contradictory and confusing criticism until in 1950 Ferdinando Bologna, in a well known essay, included them in his reconstruction of the career of so called ‘Maestro di San Giovanni da Capestrano’, who he thought was also the author of two more pieces. In this essay Bologna stated that the ‘Maestro’ began his professional education around 1460 in Naples and in Rome and then was in L’Aquila from 1485 to 1490. Before going to L’Aquila, according to Bologna, the painter produced two more works: a ‘Saint Anthony of Padua’ in Naples and a ‘Saint Bernardin of Siena’ in Rome. Here we would like to present a new series of research that would allow us to reconsider the present order of the altar piece of Blessed John of Capistrano and a different dating for the two L’Aquila paintings.

Those original bulini adapted the iconography of an older oltremontana series of woodcuts from Basel in a more modern context and thanks to this new facies represented for the next two hundred years the main mod- el for the iconography of the planets god and their children. The fortune of “Finiguerra Planets” reached not only the popular imagination of the common citizens or the world of the italian courts, but also the workshops of some impor- tant artists of the Italian Renaissance before the diffusion of maniera moderna. Indeed, in this article it is shown the use of those Florentine copper engravings as stylistic and iconographic model by Umbrian and centre-Italian painters like Pe- rugino, Pintoricchio and Cola dell’Amatrice between the end of 15th and the beginning of 16th century, especially dur- ing the ideation of the iconography of some important frescoes cycles.

The pictorial production by Cola dell’Amatrice, also called Filotesio (1480–1550 ca.) – architect, painter and illuminator who worked in Abruzzo, Umbria and the Marches in the first half of the century – is a fine example.

Abstract: At the beginning of 16th century L’Aquila reached a delicate political stability after years of infighting and factions. In this regard, the desire to legitimize the new city government, the need to show its loyalty to the Spanish crown and the succession of events linked to popular religiosity, probably encouraged the local Magistracy to promote the patronage of the arts.
In L’Aquila the greatest artist of those years was undoubtedly Saturnino Gatti (1463-1518). After a Florentine training and a supposed first experience in Umbria, he aroused the attention of many future patrons thanks to the interesting cycle of frescoes in the church of S. Panfilo at Villagrande di Tornimparte (Aq).
Saturnino, mindful of the teachings of his first master Silvestro di Giacomo da Sulmona (about 1450-1504), was also the author of a series of important statues in wood and terracotta that, along with the pictorial cycles, in a short time made him a reference model for local public institution, parishes, confraternities, merchants of the city and lords of the countryside. Therefore, his artistic personality is one of the best products of constant cultural exchanges – as a results of the numerous trips “a dorso di mulo” along the “Via degli Abruzzi” during the centuries – between L’Aquila and Florence.
The purpose of the report is to analyze two works of art closely related to the production of Gatti. The famous “Madonna di Palazzo” (1505-1506), tempera on panel whose attribution can not be doubted, and the “Madonna di Collemaggio” (1506), sculpture of great value, which clashes a bit with the style of Saturnino’s early works, although the terracotta has always been attributed to him.
