Mysticism, despite implying certain relationship with the suprasensible, presents common phenomenological features with the sensible experience of beauty and with artistic creation. This article intends to examine the tenuous frontiers between mysticism and aesthetics according to three 20th century authors, experts on Plotinus: Evelyn Underhill, Vladimir Jankélévitch, and Juan David García Bacca. To that end, it will firstly analyze the status of sensibility, art, and spirituality in Underhill. Secondly, it will evaluate how the domain of ineffability, emphasized throughout Jankélévitch’s work and specially in his musical aesthetics, guarantees the kinship between both areas. Thirdly, it will investigate the confluence between the mystical path and the path to Beauty in García Bacca’s reading of the itinerary towards the Transcendent, proposed by Plotinus. In conclusion, it will highlight points of convergence and divergence between the authors.

This paper aims to show how this change of «categories» imposed by the fact of a physical-mathematical-instrumental science will be the one that, ultimately, enables the real emergence of novelties –creation– and forces a readjustment of traditional epistemology. There is, consequently, in the thought of Juan David García Bacca, an almost indissoluble unity between art, science and truth.

This article shows how, in García Bacca's thought, the notion of «life» and the decisive role it plays in it, is closely linked to a free and creative activity; placing ourselves more in the wake of Bergson than in that of Ortega or Dilthey, as, up to now, García Bacca scholars have been placing him.

This essay aims to show how the concept of «life» takes on a decisive centrality in the thought of Juan David García Bacca. Our author will use it as the cornerstone from which to reconstruct an epistemology incapable of giving account of that dynamic air and that kinetic perspective of moving bodies that, from the 1930s, García Bacca understood as an inalienable requirement that contemporary sciences impose on thought.

In this paper, I deal with García Bacca's conception of philosophy all along some of his early writings. I start exposing his «theological» conception of philosophy because it introduces a variety of considerations concerning a philosophical approach to mystic experience and creation as a task for metaphysics.

The beauty has been, since the time of the Greeks, the torment of the philosophers; settle such idea taking it under a definition that refuses has held, always in vain, the task of not a few thinkers to the present day. Beauty does not leave rationalized and thus made the reason an non-reason; it is not knowable, nor has a logical structure. Is for this reason that through the aesthetic perception we grasp what itself is not perceptible; it is the experience of opening of an interiority which until now had remained hidden to the eyes of the quotidian and now takes a range of first order.

This paper analyzes García Bacca’s interpretation of Heidegger’s Sein und Zeit and Kant und das Problem der Metaphysik. In great measure, Heidegger’s thought carries out a very peculiar function in the history of philosophy, inasmuch as the overcoming of metaphysics proposed in Sein und Zeit constitutes a frontal recapitulation with the perennial repertoire of this field. In Heidegger’s terms, asking for metaphysics is asking for man itself. Garcia Bacca's reading is placed as a continuation of Heidegger criticism of metaphysics, and as a possibility of surpassing its limitations: a new nuclear metaphysics.

This paper analyzes the thought of J. D. García Bacca, republican exiled, based on three contemporary authors: M. Heidegger, W. James and A. N. Whitehead. They subverted the traditional philosophical language –and its foundations– in a «creative» way and they helped to devise a new ontological background that met the requirements of new scientific challenges. These new principles meant a radical break with the scholastic background –the resort to rigid ontological categories has founded the different metaphysical theories that have followed one another since Aristotle. So we do not need to count on that kind of ontological rigidity: the human mind scrutinizes reality, but his epistemic decisions do not freeze reality; reality is in essence «creative», unlimited, infinite...

In the atomic age, our era, is difficult continue talking about moral; the fundamental question is: is the atomic bomb an insurmountable moral limit for humanity? If life, as William James sade, «is a real adventure, with real danger», is there a place for morality in her? From antagonism between two contemporary views of the atomic bomb –the vision of García Bacca and Günther Anders– we elaborate a contemporary cartography of the matter.

The affinity between American thought and Spanish’s thinkers of late nineteenth century and early twentieth is even more clear that it seemed in the beginning. In this essay I analyze the relation between the American philosopher W. James (1842-1910) and the exiled Spanish philosopher J. D. García Bacca (1901-1992). It also holds that from the reading of Jame’s pragmatism García Bacca adopted a position that explains some aspects of his laters proposals.

Managing Beingness entails the use of lying as a key tool in everyday life. The «usefulness» that the man obtains from it is enormously varied. The time in which the lie was limited to a simply moral problem has been long, but the true question about lying lies in its ontological status. Lying –more specifically, lying to oneself– is a way of managing the peculiar existence that we have been gifted with.

Angst (Angst) is the permanent possibility, for Dasein, of running up against a nothingness that causes its radical wobbling: the bankruptcy of its grounds (Gründe), being constantly on the edge of the abyss (Ab-grund). In the manner of M. Heidegger, according to Kierkegaard, we distinguish in this work simple “fear” (Furcht) and their referral to determined of a higher category existential as the indeterminate angst. We'll end, by the hand of Freud, attending to the fundamental tension between the Heimlich and the Unheimlich seeing how angst is a state of “being-in-the-world”.

Considering García Bacca’s treatment of Whitehead’s "Process & Reality", the paper regards the affinity between these two authors, in their characterization of the deficiencies of classical ontology and in their invention of concepts for a new approach to ontology: a metaphysics of creation and novelty. For this reason, through the aesthetic perception –and availing ourselves to do so in this essay of Octavio Paz’s "The Monkey Grammarian"– we grasp what itself is not perceptible; the experience of opening of an interiority which until now had remained hidden to the eyes of the quotidian and now takes a range of first order.
