The terraced arrangement of the so-called "Villaggio" at Ayia Triada On the basis of the notebooks of the first excavators (1902-1914) and of the results of the new stratigraphical researches (1977-2003) at Haghia Triada, we propose a reconstruction of the LM IB terraced arrangement of the so-called «Villaggio» in the area South of Muraglione a Denti. It is possible to distinguish six terraces, which are labelled with Roman numbers, from the lowest to the West, to the highest to the East. These ones was supported by Muraglione a Denti at the northern edge and occupied by small and humble LM IB houses (Casa del Lebete, Casa delle Sfere Fittili, Casa del Pistrinum, etc.). A more careful reading of Halbherr’s notebooks permit some corrections to the foregoing statements about stratigraphy in the area: it is not true that a Neolithic figurine was recovered under the floor of room 7 of Casa del Lebete, as stated by L. Banti; furthermore, the «pit of the frescos», recovered for the first time by R. Paribeni in 1903, was located only in the area of room B of Casa VAP, under a LM IIIA2 floor level, and not also in the adjacent room A, as maintained by Militello. The palatial character of Muraglione a Denti’s architecture and the urbanistic connection with Villa and buildings related to it (Bastione, Edificio Ciclopico, Piazzale Inferiore), they all suggest that the whole terraces system was carried out following the will of the central authority at the site. So, it is possible that the terraced quarter was another annex of the Villa, in addition to Bastione, where production activities (weaving in Casa delle Sfere Fittili, foods preparation in Casa del Pistrinum) but also ceremonial, administrative and storage functions (Casa del Lebete) were allocated. Finally, we propose an estimate of extension of the LM I settlement, based on the results of numerous trenches realized at the beginnings of the XX c. out of the present archaeological area and substantiated in the notebooks. The settlement appears to be not very extended (about 1,5 hectare) and clearly dominated by the spaces occupied from the Villa and the ceremonial and productive areas related to it.

Abstract: Among the significant places for the urban identity of Catania, the so-called Carcere of St. Agatha has maintained, from the late Middle Ages, a strong central role in the collective imaginary of the modern city. The close connection to the places of Agatha Passio – the Prison where she is visited by St. Peter – has meant that around this building a number of religious meanings have settled that overshadowed over time the understanding of the building. The analysis of the architectural remains together with the archaeological data (2005) made it possible to further substantiate the interpretation of the building as a temple on a height podium in the Italic tradition and propose a more accurate architectonic restitution that recognizes in type of templum rostratum the reference model. The topographic analysis highlights the close relationship with the amphitheater and the exact program that reconfigures the urban area during the 2 nd cent. AD and to articulate the transformation that occurred in Early Middle Age with the installation of a necropolis closely connected to the venerated burial.
