Cutting-edge mobile phones and tablets marketed by Apple, equipped with a LiDAR sensor, are able to measure the three-dimensional position of objects and reconstruct their surface. At present, specific publications illustrating the potential of this sensor in the field of archaeology are not known. The first part of the article explains its functioning; the second deals with its limitations; the third describes its use in an architectural survey of two buildings; the fourth proves its usefulness in the architectural field, particularly in the study of archaeological standing buildings (archaeology of architecture). In light of the tests performed, it can be stated that the LiDAR offers centimetre-level accuracy and is therefore of great interest in the field of archaeology, also considering its relatively low cost, its ease of manoeuvring and fast acquisition of data, compared to other scanning systems. The LiDAR may become a common tool in the field of archaeology in the future if investments in this technology continue, producing sensors capable of measuring more accurately (the current maximum coverage is 5 m) and software (apps) that can produce flawless textures and more uniform sampling of space. In its current state of development, the sensor is not suitable for precise modelling of small size objects, while it is useful for the archaeological documentation of masonry, architectural elements and walls. In addition, it is the ideal tool for obtaining floor maps and three-dimensional models of small-sized environments.

Hammerstones and anvils are among the oldest tools used by hominins to perform a variety of tasks including knapping activities. The bipolar technique on anvil is well documented in Prehistory since the Lower Palaeolithic and is usually considered to be an expedient technique in comparison to other knapping systems. This technique plays a pivotal role in the Uluzzian techno-complex lithic production where it is largely used. In the present study, we analyse the anvils and hammerstones recovered in the Mousterian and Uluzzian layers of the site of Castelcivita (Campania region-southern Italy) by a multi-disciplinary approach. Our aim is to investigate the function and functioning of anvils and hammerstones by evaluating the presence and the role of bipolar knapping in these two assemblages. To do this, we integrated techno-functional analysis (sensu Boëda) and use-wear study, by defining each techno-functional unit (transformative and prehensile unities) of anvils and hammerstones and identifying the specific use-wear left by the bipolar technique by means of a dedicated experimental programme. The obtained results allowed us to observe different technical behaviours, concerning both the production and the use of hammerstones and anvils, between Mousterian and Uluzzian. Differences were encountered in the selection of raw material (limestone in the Uluzzian, sandstone in the Mousterian) and in the technical way of approaching the tool as well as in the function: the Mousterian anvil was used ‘as is’ for crushing materials, unlike the Uluzzian anvils which were exclusively employed for bipolar knapping, after adapting their original volume. Hammerstones were mainly used as pestles or retouchers in the Mousterian and for direct percussion in knapping activities during the Uluzzian.

RTI is a photographic method that allows to enhance any unevenness on the surface ofan object. In archaeology, the RTI method is used for various purposes, for instance, to study superficial markings on ceramic artefacts and to understand their possible causes (natural unevenness of the materials, manufacturing techniques, intended use). This article describes a research that has been conducted thanks to the RTI method on some ceramic artefacts dating back to the Bronze Age, from the village located in Via Ordiere, in Solarolo (RA). The research aims to test the limits of use of this instrument and its actual potential to give information on certain aspects of the production process of a ceramic artefact, such as the tools used to refine the surface (smoothing or polishing). Moreover, the RTI images have been tested as auxiliary tool for archaeological design of lithic artefacts from the same sites (arrowheads). The first part of the article is dedicated to the methodological aspects of the research: the processing chain, the tools and the time needed to complete each phase of the work. In the second part, the results of the research and the possible developments are discussed. The points of strength and the limits of this method are both summarised in the last section of the article.

This paper will describe the research and teaching project Archaeology of architecture in Romagna where advanced archaeological survey methodologies have been used to investigate the history of monuments and their architectural evolution over time. We selected 46 sites, including 6 ecclesiastical buildings and 40 castles. In the urban landscape the research focused on the church of Santa Croce in Ravenna. The study of the castles of Romagna, and the analysis of building techniques utilised within them, allows us to make observations regarding skills used in the construction of these buildings. Teaching activities have been conducted since 2008 as part of the workshop program of the Department of History, Cultures, and Civilizations. The most recent was carried out in Longana, near Ravenna, in the church of S. Apollinare.

This article describes the methods used within the Archaeology of Architecture in Romagna research project and in particular the structure and principles of the database. The results obtained in the following fields are illustrated: transformation of the architecture of churches and castles, medieval building technologies, ancient measuring standards, and clients. We selected 47 sites, including 7 ecclesiastical and 40 defensive buildings (castles). In the urban landscape the research focused on one of the most significant ecclesiastical buildings in Ravenna: the church of Santa Croce. Expanding into the field of monumental landscaping, a new project focused on a census of moulds and the forms of ancient building materials (campioni mensori) in northern Italy.

The methods and tools used to determine the history of construction and building techniques of the castle of Sorrivoli (Roncofreddo - FC) are here described. This is a research project carried out within a study coordinated by the teaching of Medieval Archaeology (University of Bologna), which has the purpose of conducting a census of all the medieval castles in Romagna. There is certain news from the tenth century concerning the castle to be studied. However, the investigations have shown that the standing preserved structures must be dated from the fourteenth century onwards. The system of photogrammetric survey of the walls and the technique of threedimensional modelling of the structures are here described. An extended part of this paper is also devoted to results of stratigraphic, typological, geological, metrological and comparative mensio-cronological analysis.

Architectural structure is a three-dimensional volume and its features, that are recognized on the field through archaeological investigation (stratigraphic, metric and formal data), are distributed within the three-dimensions. Stratigraphic wall analysis normally needs front elevations or photo-mosaic images to draw the boundaries between each Stratigraphic Unit (SU). Stratigraphic three-dimensional component is not recorded because not taken into account by these supporting documents. With the support of photo modelling and stereophotogrammetry, instead, it is possible to record perimeter and volume of each SU in three-dimensional space also obtaining isomorphic reproductions of the detected object. These copies are high quality photo textured models that provide to complete overview of architectural volumes and close dimensional framework (length, depth and width) of mouldings and decorative architectural elements. Moreover the coordinates of any point can be extracted from these models in order to obtain traditional charts (maps, sections, elevations and axonometric views, useful to understand the process of installation of building elements). The purpose of this paper is to describe different techniques able to acquire three-dimensional data of wall stratigraphy in order to dene new methods of documentation based on the use of photo-modelling and stereophotogrammetry. The data used for this research belongs to excavated sites or high-preserved fabrics of different ages and functions such as the late medieval bell-tower of the basilica of San Severo (Classe, Ravenna), the modern tower of Monte Erno (FC) and the church of San Bartolomeo in Tipano (FC). Starting from these cases we explore some technical aspects of data processing like quickness, measurement accuracy, information content and equipments cost.

In this contribution we describe the methods of graphical documentation of the archaeological excavation in the sites of Mursia (Pantelleria, TP), Rontana (Brisighella, RA) and S. Severo (Classe, RA). Moreover we explain the experiences of archaeological survey in the site of the church (pieve) in S. Cassiano in Decimo (Campiano, RA) and the castle in Pianetto (Galeata, FC). We used methods based on stereophotogrammetry and on photomodelling of the stratigraphic evidences and we studied in depth some aspects: the swiftness (of the proceeding), the accuracy (of the measurement), the informative contents (of the registration) and the cost (of the instruments). Afterwards there are some solutions for integrating these methods in the present standards of documentation of the archaeological excavation. Moreover we specify the chance to employ the results for the communication of the archaeological interpretation (the process of placing the structural elements, the architectonic stratification, the different building phases and the architectonic structures supposed in the different historical periods).
