Low-power laser scanning techniques provide a powerful tool for a diverse range of automatic inspection tasks. They are more suitable for high component feed rates, less sensitive to changes in ambient lighting and their output requires less processing power than CCD vision systems. In earlier papers, the authors have described typical automotive-related areas of application for laser scanning. The current paper describes recent work concerned with data capture and signal processing techniques necessary for fully automatic inspection systems with particular reference metal cutting machine tools.

To alleviate the feed fluctuation and to maintain a smooth feed in conventional five-axis machining, an optimal feed interpolation algorithm (look-ahead) is proposed. However, the problem arises where the segment usually cannot be interpolated exactly in an integer period because of the nonzero joint feed at the junction. To overcome this problem, and to achieve faster machining speed and higher quality parts, this paper presents an optimal feed interpolation algorithm for high-speed, five-axis machining having the function of “look-ahead”, i.e., variable-period linear interpolation algorithm. In real applications, the proposed algorithm results in: (1) constant speed; (2) high machining accuracy. Moreover, in this paper, an efficient method for acceleration and deceleration control is presented to achieve the highest-quality feed profiles and to shorten machining times. The precision and speed of machining is improved greatly. Experimental results verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.

This paper describes the application of a robot with active force feedback to an industrial assembly operation involving fragile, medium-sized workpieces supplied with large position and orientation uncertainties. It is shown that active force feedback yields a better and more reliable technical solution than passive force feedback. In addition, active force feedback is also economically justified, since the passive solution requires additional peripheral equipment in order to deal with the large uncertainties. The active force feedback approach presented is general in nature and not application dependent.

Variation analysis of assemblies is a strategic task in many industrial applications. Parts manufactured through plastic deformation processes exhibit appreciable shape deviations from the nominal geometry due mainly to spring-back phenomena. When these parts are assembled, initial shape deviations at part level highly influence the final assembly shape. This work focuses on the modeling and simulation of shape errors in order to perform variation analysis of compliant assemblies. The aim is to simulate variational shape of parts according to a small number of control points chosen on the part geometry through a morphing mesh procedure. These points are typically related to measurement or inspection points of manufactured parts. From the mesh model of parts, mesh nodes are moved by applying the morphing procedure. In particular, in order to assure control points belong to the “perturbed” shape, a linear-constrained approach is adopted. The so-morphed parts are used to accomplish the variational assembly analysis following the classical place, clamp, fasten, and release cycle. In order to achieve statistical results, Monte Carlo simulation is performed: a set of control points driving the perturbed parts is generated at each iteration; these parts are then assembled and results are stored. Numerical results are compared with ones coming from commercial software that uses a linear approach based on the sensitivity matrix.

Heat source models are mathematical expressions that represent the generation term in the fundamental heat transfer equation. Investigators have successfully demonstrated different heat source models for single-wire welding. The present investigation estimates the double ellipsoidal heat source model parameters for twin-wire application. The heat source model parameters have been estimated for varying set of welding conditions. It has been found that the heat source model parameters for twin-wire welding are different from the single-wire welding. Moreover, the heat source model parameters also depend upon process parameters. Effects of welding current, electrode polarity and wire diameter on the size of heat source model have been presented. Flux consumption is also found to play a significant role in deciding the heat source model parameters.

The diffusion and adoption of ICT innovations permeate through a social system that positively affects customer satisfaction and support customer service excellence. The three discourses with respect to information systems innovation are discussed in the context of Zimbabwe with particular reference to diffusion, social embeddedness, and the transformative nature of ICT interventions. The framework for service excellence links the customer to the service environment, service delivery and the processes. The Xerox Excellence Model represents one of the early excellence pioneering models, and the EFQM European Excellence Model is a representative of international quality award model that informs customer service excellence. The methodology used is a mixed method approach, where the quantitative approach was used in assessing the ICT usage patterns and indicators in Zimbabwe. The research used the quantitative approach on Infodensity covering 18 countries in East and Southern Africa for...

The aim of this work is to develop a study of Taguchi optimization method for low surface roughness value in terms of cutting parameters when face milling of the cobalt-based alloy (stellite 6) material. The milling parameters evaluated are feed rate, cutting speed and depth of cut, a series of milling experiments are performed to measure the surface roughness data.

PurposeWhen acquiring advanced manufacturing technologies (AMT), the greatest caution should be taken regarding the performance measurement system to be used: the decision regarding new investments should not be conditioned by the excessive use of financial indicators to the detriment of the strategic objectives that motivated the investments. It is intended to analyze the aeronautical sector, for which the purchase of AMT is qualifying criteria, with two intentions: first, to identify the performance measurement systems that are used, and second, to test their correspondence with the objectives that motivated the investments.Design/methodology/approachA survey of the 20 plants in the population was conducted via a postal questionnaire plus a structured interview. The unit of analysis has been maintained through the triangulation of data sources.FindingsThe findings suggest that both financial and non‐financial indicators are used, with the latter gaining predominance over the forme...

This article presents a system of computer aided costs of weld operations by welding for mechanical assemblages. We propose a system based on the combination of two cost estimation methods: on one hand we use the analytic method to formulate the time for weld and for gas and filling metal consumption according to the different parameters of preparing and welding features. The estimating is based upon an evaluation of the filling metal mass used in the welding process. On the other hand, we use the parametric method for the structuring of costs generated by the different features costs which compose the welding process: preparing, pointing and welding. In this case, the estimating is based on the structure of inductors suitable for the scale of each feature. The system we have developed has been implemented with Microsoft Access which permits us to rapidly and efficiently define important and strong data base. The latter constitutes in majority a library of expertise for the enterprise such as the used processes, the preparations, the metals, etc. At last, and to show the developed methods interest and the efficiency of the model, we have treated an industrial project proposed by a collaborating enterprise. The results obtained compared to real time made by welding staff prove the rapidity and the accuracy of the model we have developed.
