Between 2015 and 2016 archaeological excavations has been conducted by LabTAF of University of Salento in Perazzone (Troia, Foggia, Italy) where the statio ad Pirum along the via Traiana is localized; these investigations brought to light two dif-ferent areas. In the first one (Saggio 1) ten “cappuccina” type burials were identified and dated to the Late Roman period; these burials were seated into a room. The second area (Saggio 2) refered to domestical structures with part of pavement (composed by “pedali”) and three doliola, one of that with several ceramic sherds, dated to the Late Roman period too.

This work presents an experiment conducted on the settlement of Nuceriola, an archaeological site identified along the ancient via Appia, the road that starting from Rome passed through the city of Beneventum (Italy) in the direction of Brindisi. Different tools have been applied to enhance the detection of archaeological cropmarks. Since 2011, the Ancient Appia Landscapes Project has been working on the detection of the dynamics and the network of ancient settlement located along the Appia road in the east of Benevento, along with the cyclical elements and the human activities that influenced the evolution of landscapes. Starting from the photogrammetric results obtained from the processing of images from UAV, this document compares different types of mapping applying vegetative indices (VI) on raster data in order to point out archaeological evidence on land cultivated with wheat. For aerial image shots, a commercial quadcopter with RGB camera was used to identify the buried remains in archaeological settlements by means of visual recognition. The aim was to verify which types of mapping with VI can produce the best results for the display of archaeological finds, especially in terms of cropmarks. The case study shows that the use of only RGB cameras, without the addition of multispectral or thermal cameras, already allows the digital recording of buried archaeological remains through the application of appropriate filtering procedures of the colorimetric data and the vegetative indices.

Las técnicas de aerofotointerpretación arqueológica han sido de aplicación muy restringida en la región pampeana, situación que comenzó a modificarse en la última década bajo el impulso de algunos proyectos de investigación de arqueología histórica. El presente trabajo sintetiza los resultados de la utilización de esta herramienta en el estudio de las construcciones de piedra situadas en la porción central del Sistema de Tandilia, donde se empleó básicamente como método de detección remota. Se describe el modo en que fueron analizados los fotogramas y, a través de la presentación de diferentes casos –tanto de identificaciones positivas como negativas-, se discuten las ventajas y las limitaciones que presentó su aplicación a la zona de estudio. Entre las conclusiones del trabajo, se destaca que la aerofotointerpretación posibilitó la selección de los lugares donde era probable que hubiera construcciones pircadas así como la obtención de un corpus de información ambiental general, optimizando del tiempo y los recursos destinados a las
prospecciones en el terreno.

New historical and topographic reconstruction of the territory of Fondi (LT) through the identification, interpretation and study of the traces of human activity over time and the resulting interactions in area where marshes are present. The study starts from the archaeological survey to complete in comparative exegesis of archival and aerophotographic tools. Furthermore, by the use of input forms a GIS database has been populated with the collected data and integrated as expressed graphically in the archeological map. The territory of Fondi has historically suffered from a lack of systematic investigations, most of the information come from eighteenth and twentieth century. For this reason we have paid special attention to the analysis of the geomorphological and hydrographic aspects, to the comparison of the historic maps and archaeological aerial photos.

International historiography has extensively assessed the innovations in war practice experienced during the First World War. However, the consequences of trench warfare in military cartographic production have not been fully investigated yet. Following this line, the essay presents the cartographic corpus of the historical archive of the 3rd Army; the 3rd Army had a fundamental role in the conflict, settling on the Piave river after Caporetto and leading the final advance towards Istria. The analysis of the collection, which is still unpublished, can open a new front of research aimed at developing categories of semiological analysis and typological classification of military maps as sources produced in fieri, i.e. manuscript IGM maps that were constantly updated during war operations. First, the cartographic corpus is presented; second, a first typological classification and a semiological decoding of maps are proposed, based on the interpretation of the symbols used, of the legend and of the methods of representation. In particular, the contribution focuses on tactical maps, i.e. cartographies that were continuously updated in proelio to document the evolution of war events on the front line.
