Gortina

"The time of Epimemdes' activities in Sparta falls on the Archaic epoch, most likely 7th–6th centuries BC. In that period, those who had managed to rise thanks to the economic changes, had a good possibility to neglect with impunity any ideas of shame and justice. The mass perception apprehended the situation as an infamy, guilt and filthy condition. Natural aspiration for purifying and releasing from this condition was one of the most important incentives for constituting the state power and for law codification which were undertaken at that time in many Hellenic cities. Athens embarked on this path resolutely not until the early 6th century BC, when rationalistic methods of familiarization and comprehension of the world achieved certain success. Irrational methods were also used, but they were subordinate (ritual purification, new cults etc.).
As for Sparta, it started constituting its political and social existence earlier than other Greek cities, that is why here the rational methods in the construction of eunomia could not be used in full. So, the creation of the «Spartan Cosmos» presupposed wide use of irrational mechanisms. That is what explains the importance of oracles for the Spartan constitution, the presence here of a pleiad of prominent poets-musicians invited for religious ceremonies, the sacrahzation of political space, the permanent use of prophets' help in everyday politics. That is what also explains the clear “Spartan trace” left by the figures of pronounced shamanic type, like Epimemdes the Cretan.

The multivarious arrangement of mosaic floor pavements in Greek and Roman houses provides us today with clues as to the presumed function of the rooms they decorated. This is something that Pierre Gros recently evoked in his L'architecture romaine, his excellent synthesis of Roman architecture published in Paris in 2001 by Picard. The architectural layout and decoration, especially the mosaic floors, of the given rooms in the House of Leukaktios in Ptolemais have lent support to this idea, contributing to an understanding of specific purpose and function, which can be deemed as very likely.

A seguito della ripresa degli scavi del Pretorio di Gortina negli anni 1989-1995, scavi coordinati dall’allora direttore della Scuola Archeologica Italiana di Atene, prof. A. Di Vita, la prima fase di quel complesso monumentale è stata interpretata come un ginnasio databile agli inizi del I sec. d.C., sorto in stretta connessione funzionale e a ridosso di un precedente stadio, datato dallo scavatore, E. Lippolis, al I secolo a.C.
Il ginnasio – di cui si conservano solo poche strutture a causa del continuo succedersi sul sito di fasi di trasformazione, fino all’età medievale – appare costituito da un grande piazzale porticato (m 35.50 x 28.80) di ordine dorico-tuscanico, approssimativamente orientato in senso nord-sud, parzialmente addossato ad est alle gradinate dello stadio e accessibile da questo stesso lato; sul lato opposto all’ingresso, il complesso prevedeva una serie di ambienti le cui strutture superstiti sono state in più punti rintracciate lungo il lato occidentale, mentre sul lato meridionale i grandi impianti di riscaldamento delle sale calde delle terme che si insediarono nel ginnasio a partire dall’età traianea hanno di fatto obliterato in gran parte le tracce delle fasi precedenti; resti di fondazioni emersi in scavi recenti condotti da M.A. Rizzo immediatamente a Nord dello stadio farebbero presumere l’esistenza di vani anche sul lato est.
Il lato ovest sembra quindi presentare una serie di vani piuttosto ampi la cui cadenza appare conservata nel ritmo degli ambienti più tardi, che hanno, dove possibile, sempre riutilizzato le fondazioni antiche. Il vano centrale, interpretabile come l’ephebeum del Ginnasio, si trova in asse con l’ingresso posto sul lato est ed era originariamente un ambiente quadrangolare aperto sul portico antistante per il tramite un diaframma di colonne, di cui rimane ancora in situ lo stilobate.
Per le caratteristiche costruttive – muri con alto basamento in opera quadrata ed elevato probabilmente in mattoni crudi, sistemi di fissaggio e sollevamento dei blocchi, trattamento delle superfici a vista – il Ginnasio appare inserirsi nella tradizione costruttiva greca, anche se con alcuni attardamenti tipici del mondo cretese rispetto alle innovazioni tecniche della Grecia ellenistica; tuttavia, alcuni particolari morfologici, come i caratteri dell’ordine del portico, appaiono risentire di influssi provenienti dall’area italica tardo-repubblicana, non limitati a Gortina ma riscontrabili in altri monumenti coevi cretesi, come testimoniano i ritrovamenti di Aptera, Eleutherna e della fase augustea del Diktynnaion. Particolarmente interessante è l’unità di misura usata nelle membrature architettoniche, dove si riscontra l’uso di un braccio da circa 52 cm che rimanda al mondo tolemaico.
In una successiva fase di trasformazione del ginnasio, forse contemporanea all’inserzione, sul lato nord, di un edificio termale datato dallo scavo all’età traianea, il vano centrale del lato occidentale venne radicalmente modificato inserendo al suo interno una complessa struttura triabsidata, con due absidi simmetriche, più piccole, a Nord e a Sud, ed una più ampia ad Ovest; la sala manteneva comunque il suo affaccio ad Est sul porticato centrale. Della fase originaria della sala non rimane molto – il podio modanato dell’abside meridionale, diversi elementi pertinenti alla trabeazione dell’ordine che doveva trovarsi al di sopra dei podii dele due absidi simmetriche -, ma i pochi elementi superstiti presentano caratteri morfologici che rimandano ancora alla tradizione tardo-ellenistica. I confronti planimetrici, se non negli edifici termali di cui la sala triabsidata di Gortina, databile al più tardi all’età traianea, sembrerebbe costituire un prototipo, sembrano invece essere rintracciabili nelle architetture funerarie e nei ninfei, come attestano i casi delle necropoli alessandrine, dei ninfei ellenistici di Locri Epizefri, dell’Antro delle Sorti a Palestrina, del ninfeo dela villa di Pompeo ad Albano.

The area investigated during the 2011-2014 archaeological excavations carried out by the ‘Sapienza’ University of Rome is located north of the northern plateia, that crosses the city of Gortys from west to east, connecting the city center to the agora, and along which main public edifices are placed, and east of the Nymphaeum complex previously dug in 2003-2013. Here a group of considerable and relevant monuments, to be dated back to the Roman imperial age, was unearthed under the Byzantine layers. Such monuments seem to be characterized by private nature and at least one of
them should be certainly regarded as a funerary edifice, a sort of monumental mausoleum.

The interpretation of the past is even more difficult when there are not archaeological remains or not enough evidence to describe the structure and the time evolution of a monument or an archaeological site. Luckily, in the last years, technology enhances our possibility to create more faithful reconstructions of the ancient world. This
paper presents a new methodology that helps to produce more accurate architectural reconstructions of
monuments. The virtual acoustics analysis of the Roman theatre of Gortyna, at Kazinedes, highlighted that the
test of the acoustics’ quality is essential to validate hypothetical reconstructions. Therefore, it can be helpful to
correctly interpret the architectural structure of buildings where acoustics is a fundamental aspect.

In questo articolo viene descritto e analizzato per la prima volta un sistema per la realizzazione di intercapedini nei vani caldi degli edifici termali, basato sull’uso di un particolare tipo di distanziatore ‘a chiodo’. Questi elementi in terracotta, frequentemente rinvenuti negli scavi degli impianti termali romani nell’Egeo e in Asia Minore, non erano mai stati messi in relazione con la realizzazione di intercapedini. Il contributo, che nasce dallo studio delle terme del ‘Pretorio’ a Gortina di Creta, grazie al rinvenimento di parte del sistema ancora in situ, ne illustra la realizzazione in dettaglio, fornendo anche una classificazione che oggi è generalmente in uso.

This article describes and analyzes for the first time a system for the realization of interspaces in the hot rooms of thermal buildings, based on the use of a particular type of clay spacer in form of 'nail'. These elements, frequently found in the excavations of the Roman thermal baths in the Aegean and Asia Minor, had never been associated with the construction of interspaces. The contribution, which derives from the study of the Praetorium' Baths at Gortyn in Crete, with the discovery of part of the system still in place, shows the construction in detail, also providing a classification that is now generally used.

Questo articolo vuole aggiornare le conoscenze sulle tecniche costruttive di età romana a Creta partendo dai risultati dello studio del Pretorio di Gortina ed estendendoli ad altre città romane dell’isola. Il metodo applicato all’analisi delle murature si è rivelato utile perché ha fornito importanti indicazioni cronologiche per monumenti la cui datazione era finora rimasta solo ipotetica.

This article aims to update the knowledges on the construction techniques of Roman Crete from the results of the study of the Praetorium of Gortyna and extending them to other Roman cities of the island. The method applied to the analysis of masonry was useful because it provided important informations for historical monuments whose dating was until now applied only hypothetically.
