The  aim  of  this  article  is  to  analyze  the  experience  of  Poles  visiting  the  Vietnamese  village of Sa  Pa,  for  touristic reasons.  The  subject  of  our  interest  is  a  particular  type  of  tourism practiced by people visiting this place, namely -ethnic tourism, defined as: "a form of tourism in  which  the  cultural  exoticism  of  the  host  population  and  its  "products,"  such  as  clothing, music  and  dance,  are  the  main  attractions  for  the  tourist" [Hiwasaki  2000,  p.  395]. In  our  article  we  would  like  to  expose  the  complex  nature  of  the  tourist  experience, observable in the narratives posted on blogs. The issue of the nature of the tourist experience, being a subject of interest to many tourism theorists, [Boorstin 1964, MacCannell 2002, Urry 1995] will be subjected to critical analysis and set in the context of the debate over the ethical consequences  of  ethnic  tourism  for  the  local  community. The  material  studied  in  this  article  are  the  posts  on  travel blogs,  devoted  to  journeys  to  Sa  Pa.  All  blogs  created  in  the  Polish language,  available  in  the  internet,  found  by  using  the  Google  search  engine,  has  been subjected to the analysis (a total of 25 blogs).

The shifting nature of backpacking and its increasing heterogeneity hinder attempts at deeper understandings required to keep pace with this dynamic phenomenon. The aim of this paper is to understand what is distinctive about the backpacker experience via a review of the backpacker literature and outline an agenda for future research. The unique contribution of the review is the insight into the backpacker experience, characterised by the pursuit of existential authenticity and freedom and manifested through social interactions within the backpacker culture. The review provided a meta-perspective of backpacking in which the search for experiences enabling existential authenticity and freedom remain consistent despite significant demographic, social, cultural and behavioural variation among backpackers. This relationship with experiences distinguishes backpacking from other forms of tourism. The paper highlights backpacker understandings of freedom to mean being free of temporal, spatial and social limitations imposed by their home societies. Backpackers experienced existential authenticity as involvement in the pursuit of self-development and self-identity. Heidegger’s “spielraum” (“playspace”) was applied to explain the ability of backpackers to experience this authenticity and to engage with the “other” including other backpackers in a safe manner.

This conceptual paper re-evaluates the concept of niches in tourism markets. As many regions are now attempting to address niche markets in tourism as a development strategy, understanding of the dynamics of niche markets is crucial. Current approaches are often limited to seeing niche markets as simple subsectors of larger consumer markets. We argue for a broader view of market niches as forms of social rituals involving both consumers and producers with a mutual focus of attention. Based on the work of Randall Collins we examine how interaction rituals are produced and maintained, and how these are also reflected in niche markets, such as backpacking. We illustrate the how backpacking produces a mutual focus of attention and boundaries to outsiders, helping to sustain the niche over the longer term. This analysis has implications for producers hoping to tap into niche markets, as they too need to become part of the niche community.

Increasing youth travel has led to young people being labelled as ‘nomads’. This paper examines the phenomenon of youth nomadism in the tourism literature as well as examining recent empirical evidence. A review of the literature around youth nomadism identifies two major themes: analyses of the growth and development of youth travel niches, such as backpacking, volunteer tourism and educational exchange, and broader approaches linked to the rise of the mobilities paradigm. A major global survey of youth travel (34,000 respondents) indicates three major travel styles related to different forms of ‘nomadism’: the backpacker, the flashpacker and the global nomad. The traditional backpacker can be seen as a form of ‘neo-tribe’, gathering in self-sufficient enclaves. In contrast, the flashpacker, or ‘digital nomad', utilizes existing digital and logistic infrastructure to maintain a fluid, individualized lifestyle. The global nomad, or ‘location independent traveller’, tries to integrate with the local community, while trying to avoid the strictures of ‘system’.

This study began four years ago as a modest ISTC project to compile a review of existing studies on the characteristics of the modern student traveller and research on the student travel market.  The ISTC sought help from the world’s leading travel research authorities and came up with the same answer each time; that there was almost no market research on this sector.
But it was an accepted fact that students and young people are the fastest growing travel niche,  accounting for one in five international travellers.  They are served by a multi billion-dollar specialist  niche industry that has grown and become increasingly sophisticated in meeting their specialist demands and is arguably the most successful niche market in the travel industry.
It was time for a study on the global phenomena of Student and Youth travellers.
Greg Richards, then co-ordinator of ATLAS, had a similar interest.  Over the next three years, ATLAS worked with the ISTC on ‘Today’s Youth Travellers: Tomorrow’s Global Nomads’, the first
ever global study of student and youth travellers conducted using primary research. ATLAS created the ‘Backpackers Research Group’, an international network of academics involved
in studies of student and youth travel, which exploded the myth that there was little or no research
on this market by assembling the first comprehensive bibliography of research work on the young
independent traveller.  This body of work covers the psychological, economic, market and personal
development impact of the young traveller and is used as an important context to ‘Today’s Youth Travellers: Tomorrow’s Global Nomads’. Savvy, informed by the Internet and motivated to equip themselves for life in a global society, young people stay longer, spend more than the average tourist and mix their travel experiences with adventure, study, work and relaxation.  No longer the ‘lone drifter’, they travel to become a part of the ‘on the road’ global community of millions of young travellers, united and inspired by their ‘not a tourist’ self-identity. Societal support for the value of student and youth travel is increasing.  Educational institutions, potential employers and parents – many of whom were the last generation of young travellers – recognise travel as an important personal development experience and a way of creating greater international understanding in our world.

Resumen:
Luego  de  realizar  la  investigación  etnográfica Brotes  nómades,  elegir  el  viaje  como  modo  de  vida en  la  sociedad  actual.  Una  aproximación  antropológicame  decidí  a  abordar  uno  de  los  ejes  que resultó  más  evidente durante  el trabajo  de  campo:  la  intersección del  género  y  del  viaje.  En  este artículo tomo algunos fragmentos de esta etnografía para explorar y reflexionar acerca de cómo la dimensión  de  géneroatraviesa  las  prácticas  de  viaje,  en  particular  las  de  las  viajeras  que  eligen viajar como modo de vida. El análisis se presenta en dos etapas: las reacciones y los discursos que se generan cuando una mujer enuncia que va a partir de viaje sola y cómo esto es vivenciado por ella,  y  los  distintos  encuentros  y  situaciones  que  se  dan  durante  el  viaje  en  los  que  el  género  se torna  una  categoría  clave  de  análisis.  En  particular  me  detengo  en  relatos  sobre  situaciones  de peligro, miradas y juicios respecto a lasprácticas de viaje de estas mujeres.

Abstract:
After  writing  the  ethnographic  research Nomadic  sprouts,  travelling  as  a  way  of  life  in  today's society.  An  anthropological  approachI  have  decided  to  address  one  of  the  lines  that  stood  out when  I  was  doing  field  work:  the  intersection  of  gender  and  travel.  In  this  article  I  take  some examples  of  this  ethnography  to  reflect  on  the  dimension  of  gender  through  travel  practices, particularly those of women travelers who choose travel as a way of life. The analysis is presented in two stages: the reactions and discourses that emerge when a woman states that she is planning to  travel  alone  and  how  this  is  experienced  by  her,  and  the  different  encounters  and  situations that occur during the trip in which gender becomes a key category of analysis, in particular I focus on  stories  about  dangerous  situations,  judgments  and  stares  about  the  travel  practices  of  these women.

Sırtçantalı hareket, turizm endüstrisi açısından önemli ve sürekli yükselen bir pazar olarak görülmektedir. Sırtçantalıların kitle turistinden farklı olarak, seyahatleri sırasında olağanüstü, yoğun bir deneyim olan akışı yaşadıkları, kendilerini mekânlara kaptırdıkları, zaman kavramını kaybettikleri, yüksek odaklanma, eğlence, merak hissi duydukları bilinmektedir. İlgili alan yazında, akış deneyiminin aynı zamanda önemli bir sırtçantalı motivasyonu olarak görülen kaçış deneyimine etkileri kuramsal olarak tartışılmış olsa da ölçülmemiştir. Mevcut çalışma, akış ve kaçış arasındaki bu ilişkiyi ölçmeyi amaçlamıştır. Araştırmada anket tekniğinden yararlanılmıştır. Anketler sırtçantalıların üye oldukları çeşitli çevrimiçi platformlardan toplanmıştır. Veri toplama süreci sonunda analiz edilebilir 231 anket formu elde edilmiştir. Akış ve kaçış deneyimlerini merkezine alan teori, yapısal eşitlik modeli ile test edilmiş, modelin iyi uyum endeksleri ürettiği ortaya çıkmıştır. Araştırma sonucunda eğlence/merak, odaklanılmış dikkat, zamanın kaybolması olmak üzere üç alt faktörden oluşan akışın, kaçış deneyimini pozitif yönde etkilediği saptanmıştır.

The proliferation of digital devices and online social media and networking technologies has altered the backpacking landscape in recent years. Thanks to the ready availability of online communication, travelers are now able to stay in continuous touch with friends, family and other travelers while on the move. This article introduces the practice of ‘flashpacking’ to describe this emerging trend and interrogates the patterns of connection and disconnection that become possible as corporeal travel and social technologies converge. Drawing on the concepts of ‘assemblages’ and ‘affordances’, we outline several aspects of this new sociality: virtual mooring, following, collaborating, and (dis)connecting. The conclusion situates this discussion alongside broader questions about the shifting nature of social life in an increasingly mobile and mediated world and suggests directions for future research at the intersection of tourism and technology

The place-making practices of tourists have long captured the attention of tourism researchers. This article examines how the everyday practices of backpackers contribute to place-making in the enclave and the hostel-two places common to backpacker destinations. Using participant observation supplemented by interviews, the research revealed these places to be characterised by a range of extraordinary and mundane backpacker practices and mobility rhythms. Places inhabited by backpackers were in constant flux and 'co-created' via practices in conjunction with an array of other phenomena. As backpackers interacted with one another, other people and the various materials, temporalities and environments that were present, they inadvertently contributed to place-making processes. The research shows how mobile people make place and extends understandings of how backpacker lives are lived. It demonstrates the centrality of practices to both place and mobility, highlighting the importance of tourist actions-rather than industry directives-to place-making in tourism.

A film, as a media, acts significantly in popularizing the culture of backpacking tourism, which is closely related to the capitalist values. This research attempts to reveal the capitalist values in Indonesian backpacking films. The data are obtained by applying qualitative content-analysis to 2 (two) Indonesian films, namely Haji Backpacker and Laura & Marsha. The analysis leads to several interesting findings. First, Indonesian backpacking films, either explicitly or implicitly, more-likely prefer foreign tourist destinations. Second, the backpacker ideologies are presented more obviously in the implicit backpacking movie, Laura & Marsha rather than in the more explicit one, Haji Backpacker. Third, films contribute in shifting the ideological meaning of backpacking, which now emphasizes on principle of progress or recency (standardization), individualism (pseudo-individualization and social-cement), and efficiency (fetishism). Further researchers should analyze the effects of the shifting of the meaning based the perspective of the audience and content producers.

Using of quantitative method and the survey of 350 respondents to collect information and data to analyze the level of customer satisfaction in choosing hostel backpacker. The findings showed that overall customer satisfaction with the services provided at the hostels and the researcher found that the respondents are satisfactory and gave positive responses to this research study.

This study examines the role of cellphones in young adults' backpacking experience. Using questionnaires (N = 105) and in-depth interviews (N = 14) with "Cellular Backpackers" and "Cell-Free Backpackers", the study shows how an attempt is made to reduce availability and attain maximum control over the scope and timing of communication, using a variety of avoidance practices. In addition, it was found that the backpackers care a great deal about their parents position when making their decisions whether to take their phones with them and when to use them. In this regard, the article continues the discussion on the metaphor of the cellphone as transitional object, applying this concept from childhood and adolescence to the twenties, the ages of most backpackers. On another level, the article addresses the mobile phone’s unique function as an anti-status symbol, in a way that contradicts its function in an ordinary context.

One sign of the growing interest in student travel both from the tourism industry and academic researchers is the global independent travel survey conducted by the International Student Travel Confederation (ISTC) and the Association for Tourism and Leisure Education (ATLAS). The survey, conducted in 2002, covers the profile and travel behaviour of 1,630 students booking travel from student travel organisations in eight countries. This article reports the initial results of this research. The survey showed that students are frequent travel consumers with extensive previous experience of relatively long trips outside of their own world region. Most students see their travelstyle as that of 'traveller', but a significant proportion of the market characterised their travel as 'backpacking'. Motivations reflecting a desire for experience are prevalent with student travellers; particularly in terms of exploring other cultures. Motivations tend to be differentiated by destination region and travelstyle and are distinct between students and other young travellers. In spite of these differences in motivation, however, the activities actually engaged in showed little differentiation between students and others. The most frequently mentioned activities were visiting historical sites, walking, sitting in cafes and restaurants and shopping, which were practiced by over 70% of respondents. In this and other respects, the article argues that comparisons of motivation and actual activities indicate a gap between the ideology and practice of travel

While the label 'backpacker' didn't originate in 1990 when first presented at an academic conference by the late Philip L. Pearce, its usage rose within an emerging academic discourse community that established shared interests, sources of information, terminology, and methods of communication, along with a certain level of expertise and knowledge on the subject. While the community internationalised and embraced interdisciplinary approaches, a review of the academic scholarship points to the communities increasing instability, as differential authoritative voices conflict over discursive conventions that regulate our understanding of backpacking. While once conceptual and theoretical developments in backpacker research were built through subject level consensus, distinctions within the community point to new hierarchies, with their own particular schools of thought and reinterpretations. As disparities, incongruities and deviations in backpacker research output emerge, this overview explores current research directions and identifies paradoxes, challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.

Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to deconstruct the backpacker label by reconstructing it using the historical antecedent of drifting. Following the deconstruction of backpacking’s near past, the author build a clearer conceptual foundation for backpacking’s future.

Design/methodology/approach -  The study is framed by scenario planning, which demands a critical review of the backpacking and an appreciation of its history in order to understand its future.

Findings - Backpacking, ever evolving, remains difficult to articulate and challenges researchers to “keep up” with its complexity and heterogeneity. This paper argues that researchers must learn more about how backpacking “works” by opening a dialogue with its past, before engaging in further research. The paper finds that a poor conceptualisation of backpacking has led to a codification of backpacker criteria.

Practical implications - Backpacking remains a research topic which draws disparate researchers using criteria that produces disparate results and deviations. By understanding its past, researchers will be better placed to explore the emancipatory impulses that drive backpackers today and in the future.

Originality/value -  This papers’ value lies in the retrospection process which explores backpacking’s near past so as to “make sense” of present research and present scenarios for it is the immediate future. The paper re-anchors backpacking by investigating the major historical, social and cultural events leading up to its emergence.

As backpacking grows, so does the demand for backpacker accommodation. Backpackers often want to stay in areas with a concentration of dedicated services, the opportunity to meet other backpackers and to interact with the local community. In some cases, however, opposition to the growth of backpacker enclaves has increased as problems of overcrowding, noise and litter become more evident. This leads not only to conflict between the local community and the backpackers, but also within the local community itself, between backpacker service providers and other residents. This study considers the problems associated with hostel development in Bondi Beach, Sydney, and the ways in which these problems might be tackled.

Bir turizm faaliyetinin gerçekleşebilmesi, turistik çekiciliklerin devamlılığına bağlıdır. Bu çekiciliklerin devamlılığı ise turizme katılan bireylerin seyahatleri sırasındaki sürdürülebilir uygulamalardan büyük ölçüde etkilenmektedir. Bu araştırmada diğer turist tiplerine nazaran daha uzun süreli seyahatlere katılan sırt çantalı gezginlerin sürdürülebilirliğe dair günlük uygulamaları incelenmiştir. Kartopu örneklemesi aracılığıyla toplam 244 Türk sırt çantalı gezgine ulaşılmıştır. Veriler anket tekniği kullanılarak, 2018 yılı Eylül-Ekim aylarında toplanmıştır. Verilerin analizinde; bağımsız örneklem t testi ve ANOVA'dan yararlanılmıştır gezginlerin en sık uyguladığı sürdürülebilir faaliyetlerin ekonomik sürdürülebilirliğe yönelik olduğu belirlenmiştir. Ayrıca gezginlerin gezginlik süresi, günlük işlerde çalışma durumu, günlük ortalama harcama miktarı ve sponsor desteklerine göre sürdürülebilir uygulamalarının farklılaştığı tespit edilmiştir.
The occurrence of a tourism activity depends on the continuity of tourist attractions. The
continuity of these attractions is greatly influenced by the sustainable practices of the individuals
participating in tourism. In this research, the everyday sustainability practices of the backpackers
who participated in longer-term travels compared to other types of tourists were investigated. A
total of 244 Turkish backpackers had been reached through snowball sampling. Data were
collected in September-October 2018 via a questionnaire. The data were analyzed by independent
samples t test and ANOVA. It was determined that the most frequently used sustainability
practices were practices pertaining to economic sustainability. Additionally, it was found that
sustainability practices were significantly different based on the travelers' travel period, daily
working status, daily average spending amount and sponsor supports.

Abstrak Kepuasan pelanggan boleh ditakrifkan sebagai sesuatu harapan pelanggan yang dapat dicapai oleh sesebuah organisasi yang menawarkan produk atau perkhidmatan. Manakala, perkhidmatan pelanggan pula adalah salah satu perkara yang ditawarkan oleh sesebuah organisasi dalam penyampaian produk atau perkhidmatan kepada pelanggan. Dalam kajian ini mempunyai 3 objektif, objektif pertama bagi kajian ini adalah untuk mengenalpasti motivasi yang mendorong backpacker untuk memilih hostel untuk menginap, manakala objektif kedua pula adalah untuk menguji kesesuaian model ECSI untuk pemilihan hostel dan objektif terakhir adalah untuk menganalisis faktor penentu backpacker memperoleh nilai kepuasan yang mendorong kepada kesetiaan pelanggan. Kajian ini dijalankan di beberapa buah hostel penginapan backpacker dan salah satunya adalah di Double K hostel , Larkin Johor. Kajian ini menggunakan kaji selidik iaitu mengedar borang soal selidik kepada 350 responden untuk mengumpul maklumat dan data bagi menganalisa tahap kepuasan pelanggan hostel penginapan. Dapatan kajian menunjukkan bahawa secara keseluruhannya, pelanggan iaitu responden berpuas hati dan memberikan respon positif kepada kajian ini.
