Critical path of history

In this major, paradigm-shifting work, Kojin Karatani systematically re-reads Marx's version of world history, shifting the focus of critique from modes of production to modes of exchange. Karatani seeks to understand both Capital-Nation-State, the interlocking system that is the dominant form of modern global society, and the possibilities for superseding it. In The Structure of World History, he traces different modes of exchange, including the pooling of resources that characterizes nomadic tribes, the gift exchange systems developed after the adoption of fixed-settlement agriculture, the exchange of obedience for protection that arises with the emergence of the state, the commodity exchanges that characterize capitalism, and, finally, a future mode of exchange based on the return of gift exchange, albeit modified for the contemporary moment. He argues that this final stage—marking the overcoming of capital, nation, and state—is best understood in light of Kant's writings on eternal peace. The Structure of World History is in many ways the capstone of Karatani's brilliant career, yet it also signals new directions in his thought.

My dissertation, Shattering Glass Mirrors : A Case for Historiographic Theory and Writing in Composition Studies, elaborates the theory, history, and practice of critical historiography as a pedagogical approach for teaching composition in an increasingly multicultural and multilingual society. Critical historiography is founded on the premise that composition classes have much to gain from the incorporation of lost or neglected histories in the curriculum. The field of composition itself needs to be aware of the lost histories of composition, that is, the history of Composition in Midwestern and black normal schools as well as in schools that have served students of color and lower class students throughout the twentieth century, developing alternative composition pedagogical approaches in the process. The absence of this history calls into question established histories of composition and suggest that we look at these alternative approaches as models for developing alternative pedagogical approaches to the teaching of composition today. More specifically, in my dissertation, I examine the histories of Composition written by John Brereton, James Berlin, Albert Kitzhaber and Richard Ohmann. I do so to argue, in part, that these histories do not adequately address minority populations such as, Chicanos/as-Latinos/as or African-Americans. While Sharon Crowley, Lynn Z. Bloom and Susan Miller provide a critical analysis of histories of Composition, these histories also overlook these populations. This dissertation thus calls into question the very historiographies of composition, even those by scholars who would identify as revisionist historians. Thus, in my dissertation, and in my historiographic approach, I employ critical race theorists, Richard Delgado and Kimberlé Crenshaw , critical historians, Michel Foucault and Eric Foner and a critical education theorist, Paula Moya to challenge notions of traditional multicultural curricula. These curricula, as defined by Moya, are often based upon exclusionist premises in that they solely concentrate on identity politics. The family of network optimization problems includes the following prototype models: assignment, critical path, max flow, shortest path, and transportation. Although it is long known that these problems can be modeled as linear programs (LP), this is generally not done. Due to the relative inefficiency and complexity of the simplex methods (primal, dual, and other variations) for network models, these problems are usually treated by one of over 100 specialized algorithms. This leads to several difficulties. The solution algorithms are not unified and each algorithm uses a different strategy to exploit the special structure of a specific problem. Furthermore, small variations in the problem, such as the introduction of side constraints, destroys the special structure and requires modifying andjor restarting the algorithm. Also, these algorithms obtain solution efficiency at the expense of managerial insight, as the final solutions from these algorithms do not have sufficient information to perform postoptimality analysis.Another approach is to adapt the simplex to network optimization problems through network simplex. This provides unification of the various problems but maintains all the inefficiencies of simplex, as well as, most of the network inflexibility to handle changes such as side constraints. Even ordinary sensitivity analysis (OSA), long available in the tabular simplex, has been only recently transferred to network simplex.This paper provides a single unified algorithm for all five network models. The proposed solution algorithm is a variant of the self-dual simplex with a warm start. This algorithm makes available the full power of LP perturbation analysis (PA) extended to handle optimal degeneracy. In contrast to OSA, the proposed PA provides ranges for which the current optimal strategy remains optimal, for simultaneous dependent or independent changes from the nominal values in costs, arc capacities, or suppliesJdemands. The proposed solution algorithm also facilitates incorporation of network structural changes and side constraints. It has the advantage of being computationally practical, easy for managers to understand and use, and provides useful PA information in all cases. Computer implementation issues are discussed and illustrative numerical examples are provided in the Appendix

Traditional construction scheduling approaches have proved not to have the capacity to produce and make it easily and timely available the information needed for a latter effective and efficient construction control and execution reflected in a high Percentage of Planned Activities Completed. nD poses barriers and opportunities associated to big transformations which for example could lead to relegate traditional construction scheduling approaches like the CPM in which the critical path has become a bottleneck, a constraint of a project. The big change of working with a nD construction schedule can lead to lose less time on the critical path itself but exploiting this constraint and subordinating everything else to it. Most problems that impact the critical path do not occur on the critical path itself, then subordination is not a nicety, it is a must (Goldratt, 1997). Another big change is that using nD Modeling it is possible to alter the order in which the different level of detail schedules are developed for a construction project. Using nD and CAVT it is possible to develop first the more detailed schedule and then obtaining the master schedule grouping activities in this more detailed schedule. The master schedule can then be adjusted to project requirements and the detailed schedule reviewed in an iteratively process. This opposes to the way scheduling is carried out today in which the detailed schedule follows the master schedule development effort and rarely one goes back to review the master schedule deeply, but makes the maximum effort to adjust the detailed schedule to the master schedule. And finally a very important change is that Visualization, Planning, Analysis and Communication capabilities embedded in a new nD construction scheduling development process can improve the traditional scheduling process to the extent that this schedule could finally be used as a real production control mechanism that could lead to tackle problems proactively and re-schedule the project as necessary.

Resumo: Este ensaio apresenta uma reflexão sobre o fenômeno dos "antimonumentos" que surgiram no final do século XX como uma forma de lidar, pelo viés das artes, com a violência de Estado, como nos casos do nazismo e das ditaduras latino-americanas. Este texto faz inicialmente uma retomada da mnemotécnica, ou seja, da antiga "arte da memória", que tem como seu pai mítico Simônides de Ceos, para em seguida apresentar a cena moderna da "arte da memória" sob a rubrica dos antimonumentos. O trabalho apresenta e discute obras de, entre outros artistas, Jochen Gerz, Horst Hoheisel, Andreas Knitz, Marcelo Brodsky e Fulvia Molina.

Resumen: Este ensayo presenta una reflexión sobre el fenómeno de los “antimonumentos”, que surgieron a finales del siglo XX como una forma de abordar, a través de las artes, la violencia del Estado, como en los casos del nazismo y de las dictaduras latinoamericanas. Inicialmente, este texto retoma la mnemotécnica, es decir, el antiguo “arte de la memoria”, que tiene a Simónides de Ceos como su padre mítico, y luego presenta la escena moderna del “arte de la memoria”, bajo la rúbrica de los antimonumentos. En este trabajo se presenta y se discute obras de artistas como Jochen Gerz, Horst Hoheisel, Andreas Knitz, Marcelo Brodsky y Fulvia Molina, entre otros.

Counter-monuments: Resistance and recollection work
Abstract: The essay presents a reflection upon the “antimonuments” phenomena that emerged in the end of the 20th century as a way to deal with authority violence through art, as in the case of Nazism and the Latin American dictatorships. The text begins with an explanation of the mnemotechnic, which means the old “art of memory” that had Simonides of Ceos as its mythic father. Then, the text goes on presenting the contemporary “art of memory” under the sign of “antimonuments”. The work also shows and discusses the works of Jochen Gerz, Horst Hoheisel, Andreas Knitz, Marcelo Brodsky and Fulvia Molina, among other artists.

Le texte commence pat une récapitulation de l’ancienne mnémotechnique, à savoir, l’art de la mémoire ancienne, qui possède comme père mythique Simonide de Céos. Dans un deuxième pas, il présente la scène actuelle de l’art de la mémoire sous la rubrique des contremonuments. Le travail présente et analyse d’œuvres, d’entre outres artistes, de Jochem Gerz, Horst Hoheisel, Andreas Knitz, Marcelo Brodsky et Fulvia Molina.

The point of a genealogical project is to tease out the historically rooted forces that produce received objects of knowledge. As a crucial part in building a critical interpretation, history becomes a method for tracing the contingent and contested intellectual, political, and cultural practices that create seemingly fixed objects of knowledge. In the following argument, I would like to posit that a genealogical approach to journalism's historical record treats theory not as an inert noun in opposition to history, but as a verb, a rigorous process reliant on historical evidence to form an interpretation about the broader relations of power and, in the case of journalism, public knowledge production. Historically archived materials, then, exist as the documentary evidence of power at work, and reveal on their surface and conditions of production the discourses and practices that give intelligible form to the objects of received knowledge.

Few studies and historical texts, especially in Arabic, discuss the battles fought over the coastal city of Jaffa during the 1947 - 1949 War. But alongside these few works, there do exist memoirs and autobiographies written by various characters active in the city during the same period. These texts are very important to writing the history of the first part of the War (December 1947 - 15 May 1948). Given the prominence of autobiographies and memoirs as sources, recent critical studies have considered their place in Palestinian historiography as a whole.(3) Using a group of archival documents telling the story of the garrison of Jaffa and the role it played in the trajectory of the battle, I have worked to write the history of the garrison's military activities from December 1947 to April 1948. The central thesis of this work is that Jaffan memoirs – like most of those written about the war, at least in its first stage – are written from the perspective of the defeated. This has a negative effect on the accuracy of the information, comments, conclusions and assessments presented by these memoirs. Overall, these documents end up being accusatory or self-justifying, and must thus be approached with care.

With increased regulation and scrutiny of outcomes, hospice programs are being challenged to consider the implementation of evidence-based practices (EBPs). This study reports findings from hospice director interviews and staff focus groups, which occurred following the completion of a multifaceted translating research into practice (TRIP) intervention designed to promote evidence-based pain management practices. The purpose of this article is to provide background on the use of EBPs, to report facilitators and barriers to overall implementation of pain management EBPs in hospice, and to provide recommendations for hospices interested in increasing the use of EBPs. Three areas for evaluation prior to implementing an EBP initiative in hospices were identified: community, agency, and staff cultures. Recommendations for implementation of EBPs in hospices are provided.
