Computational and memory costs restrict spectral tech-niques to rather small graphs, which is a serious limitation especially in video segmentation. In this paper, we propose the use of a reduced graph based on superpixels. In con-trast to previous work, the reduced graph is reweighted such that the resulting segmentation is equivalent, under certain assumptions, to that of the full graph. We consider equiva-lence in terms of the normalized cut and of its spectral clus-tering relaxation. The proposed method reduces runtime and memory consumption and yields on par results in im-age and video segmentation. Further, it enables an efficient data representation and update for a new streaming video segmentation approach that also achieves state-of-the-art performance. 1.

Provision of personalized recommendations to users requires accurate modeling of their interests and needs. This work proposes a general framework and specific methodologies for enhancing the accuracy of user modeling in recommender systems by importing and integrating data collected by other recommender systems. Such a process is defined as user models mediation. The work discusses the details of such a generic user modeling mediation framework. It provides a generic user modeling data representation model, demonstrates its compatibility with existing recommendation techniques, and discusses the general steps of the mediation. Specifically, four major types of mediation are presented: cross-user, cross-item, cross-context, and cross-representation. Finally, the work reports the application of the mediation framework and illustrates it with practical mediation scenarios. Evaluations of these scenarios demonstrate the potential benefits of user modeling data mediation, as in certain conditions it allows improving the quality of the recommendations provided to the users.

Invention of XML as a universal standard for data representation triggered enormously wide efforts for its adaptation into almost every IT activity. Databases took one of the focusing places of the XML research. This paper investigates the development path of XML from its origins to its current place in distributed database systems. Through enumeration of features and analysis of the problems related to XML and distributed database systems it forms a platform for understanding the consequences of adopting XML to this area of IT.

In contemporary society, data representation is an important and essential part of many aspects of our daily lives. In this talk Trevor will present how his doctoral research has contributed to our understanding on how people experience data and what role representational modality plays in the process of perception and interpretation. This research is grounded in phenomenology - he aligns his theoretical exploration to ideas and concepts from philosophical phenomenology, while also respecting the essence of a phenomenological approach in his choice and application of methods. Alongside offering a rich description of people’s experience of data representation, the key contributions of his research transcend four areas: theory, methods, design, and empirical findings. From a theoretical perspective, besides describing a phenomenology of human-data relations, he has defined, for the first time, multisensory data representation and established a design space for the study of this class of representation. In relation to methodologies, he will describe how he deployed two elicitation methods to investigate different aspects of data experience. He blends the Repertory Grid technique with a focus group session and shows how this adaption can be used to elicit rich design relevant insight. He will also introduce the Elicitation Interview technique as a method for gathering detailed and precise accounts of human experience. Furthermore, he will describe how this technique can be used to elicit accounts of experience with data. In his talk Trevor will present the findings of a series of empirical studies, these show, for instance, how certain representational modalities cause us to have heightened awareness of our body, some are more difficult to interpret than others, some rely heavily on instinct and each of them solicit us to reference external events during the process of interpretation.

This paper reviews and evaluates the potential use of modern visualization techniques in archaeology. It suggests the need to apply and develop such techniques as a central part of any modern archaeological investigation. The use of these methods is associated with wider questions about data representations, in particular, their integration with archaeological theory and their role in facilitating analysis and shaping interpretation. Concern for these questions and with the overall potential that information systems provide to capture, represent, analyze, and model archaeological information suggests the need for a new interdisciplinary focus, Archaeological Information Science. For such a focus to prosper, archaeologists need to develop additional skills that go beyond mere technical ones. Relational database systems have been the standard storage system over the last forty years. Recently, advancements in technologies have led to an exponential increase in data volume, velocity and variety beyond what relational databases can handle. Developers are turning to NoSQL which is a non-relational database for data storage and management. Some core features of database system such as ACID have been compromised in NOSQL databases. This work proposed a hybrid database system for the storage and management of extremely voluminous data of diverse components known as big data, such that the two models are integrated in one system to eliminate the limitations of the individual systems. The system is implemented in MongoDB which is a NoSQL database and SQL. The results obtained, revealed that having these two databases in one system can enhance storage and management of big data bridging the gap between relational and NoSQL storage approach.
