Enrico Baj

This article explores the shift in tenor and style undertaken by the Milan-based Movimento Arte Nuclear in between 1951 and 1959. Specifically, it explores the Enrico Baj's anarchic humanism affecting his depiction of the human figure influenced by the postwar trauma of a looming nuclear catastrophe.

Volume 13 of the Catalogue raisonné of the Orozco collection of artist and illustrated books as well as prints, dedicated to Karel Appel, Pierre Alechinsky, Enrico Baj, Alan Davie, Jim Dine,  Oyvind Fahlstrom, Sam Francis, Robert Indiana, Antonio Saura, Alfred Jensen, Asger Jorn, Allan Kaprow, Alfred Leslie, Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Mel Ramos, Joan Mitchell, Kiki O.K., Claes Oldenburg, Robert Rauschenberg, Reinhoud, Jean-Paul Riopelle, James Rosenquist, Kimber Smith, K.R.H., Sonderberg, Walasse Ting, Bram Van Velde, Bengt Lindström, Paul Rebeyrolle, Bata Mihailovitch &Tom Wesselmann. It describes the pieces of the collection, the circumstances under which they were produced, references to the museums throughout the world that keep a copy of the piece described, the appropriate catalogue references, their passage through auction houses, etc. and photographs of the pieces.

The last act of World War II took place in the Summer of 1945 with the explosions of the atomic bomb. Despite the fact that these events took place far from the "old continent" some European artists were deeply affected by the power of the atomic instrument and they meditated on a possible future dominated by a nuclear manipulation capable of redefining "the representation of man and his space". The goal of this paper is twofold: firstly to analyze some specific aspects of artists who belonged to the "Movimento Arte Nucleare" and their affiliation with architectural practices, together with their 'dialogue' with the "International Movement for an Imaginist Bauhaus"; and secondly, to introduce the figure of the Nuclear Architect, Enzo Venturelli, in order to describe an original panorama based on the alliances and contaminations between diverse disciplines associated by the sensitive attention paid to the planning of the future and the rejection of Rationalist Architecture.

This paper intends to highlight the role the arts and the exhibition system had during WWII period in Milan—a strategic centre in the fields of politics, culture and economics. At that time we can notice two main occurrences: the Leonardo exhibition at Palazzo dell' Arte in 1939, and the Picasso solo show at Palazzo Reale in 1953. In the beginning of 1939 the war was more than a threat but, despite that, the fascist regime decided to organize a temporary exhibition dedicated to Leonardo with clear propaganda purposes. After WWII and the defeat of the regime, the public administration of the city was able to arrange a Picasso exhibition and, during a moment of peace-building, the choice of the Spanish master was not accidental. It is clear that exhibition-making here was conceived as a tool for cultural interventions, marking war and peace situations and tracing a political " manifesto " .

Il progetto di Enrico Baj è riassumibile nella messa in pratica di «una ecologia dell’arte e dell’opera d’arte, che si pongono più che mai come metafora e simbolo del nostro immaginario, della nostra fantasia e, in definitiva, della nostra libertà». Ne è un esempio la composizione in progress Apocalisse in cui la metafora dell’immaginario si fa «teatro» e così si sottrae alla cinica logica del mercato. Quest’opera manifesta «un forte impegno civile contro ogni tipo di aggressività» che la mette in continuità con i “generali” degli anni Sessanta e le grandi opere
I funerali dell’anarchico Pinelli (1972) e Nixon Parade (1974), con le quali forma un trittico a cui si aggiungerà Berluskaiser nel 1994. Questa serie mette in crisi la massima libertaria sessantottina dell’immaginazione al potere, e quindi può essere analizzata come la risposta “post-Sessantotto” di Baj a una condizione che egli analizza nei termini di un inquinamento mentale che pervade anche «i territori dell’immaginario».

This article investigates the fruitful aesthetic imagery that unfolds in Antonioni’s L’eclisse (1962). Conventionally read as a political study of human alienation, the film is also a brilliant exercise in Modernist aesthetics, building artistic connections between the latest trends in contemporary art (the arte informale and the Movimento nucleare) and an already established avant-gardism (Futurism, Scuola metafisica, Surrealism). In proposing diverse references to visual arts, this essay ultimately unveils Antonioni’s passionate homage to twentieth-century iconic painters and sculptors such as Boccioni, Morandi, De Chirico, Magritte, Giacometti, Vedova, Baj, Dangelo, and Fontana.

La prima opera esposta in mostra è Quamisado II, dipinto nucleare del 1951. Chiude il percorso Punching General, scultura del 2003. In questo arco di tempo sono comprese tutte le sperimentazioni di Baj, tutti i suoi studi, i suoi scritti e, soprattutto, i suoi dipinti: un lavoro ininterrotto che ha portato all’epifania creature e personaggi (a volte vere e proprie saghe o composizioni teatrali) orientati all’onirico, al tragico, al satirico, al surreale, all’impegno politico e civile. Ogni mostra (che si rispetti) è un racconto che si sviluppa attraverso opere e in alcuni casi documenti; racconto sorretto da un’idea di fondo, un criterio di scelta e di narrazione. A causa della natura profonda del loro autore, le opere di Baj raccontano e parlano già molto di per sé: Enrico Baj ha sempre lavorato insieme alla materia, insieme al gesto, insieme ai materiali, all’immagine e all’immaginazione. Ha conquistato il fluire del gioco attraverso le mani e da queste ai colori, agli oggetti più disparati accostati, con la pittura, in universi iconografici, quasi sempre iconologici. Ma al di là di questa sorta di “lettura agevolata” della narrazione poetica di Baj, che tutti possono sperimentare, abbiamo necessariamente dovuto selezionare un grande filone tematico o mitologico all’interno della vastissima produzione dell’artista che, lo vogliamo ricordare, non si è limitata alla pittura, all’assemblaggio o alla scultura, ma fin dai primi anni si è rivolta anche all’incisione e alla scrittura: linguaggi mai abbandonati e sempre ripresi, insieme agli altri.
Per questa mostra abbiamo scelto di raccontare l’opera e la visione del mondo di Baj attraverso ben precise figure: bambini, personaggi (di legno), dame, meccano, totem e maschere. Abbiamo inoltre deciso di escludere i famosi e molto noti “generali” in favore di “un generale”: l’ultimo.
