The Data Warehouse techniques for powered strategic decision-making information are dominating the companies attention since the 1990s. The healthcare organizations, including the public healthcare organizations, are adopting this technology to achieve the better efficiency in the health management. The objective of this work is to present a Data Warehouse project for the management of the public health. The Data Warehouse will supply the Health Secretary of São Paulo with strategic information through the integration from several isolated data sources. This Paper details the methodology and strategy adopted for the project, the used tools, the challenges and the solutions. The conclusion show the success in the implementation of the first part of project and stimulate the continuity of the project. The experience obtained with the implementation of the data warehouse showed by this work, can be used to similar projects in the health care organizations.

Responding to Ruth McDonald’s editorial on the rise of leadership and leadership development programmes in healthcare, this paper offers three arguments. Firstly, care is needed in evaluating impact of leadership development, since achievement of organisational goals is not necessarily an appropriate measure of good leadership. Secondly, the proliferation of styles of leadership might be understood in part as a means of retaining control over public services while distributing responsibility for their success and failure. Thirdly, it makes a plea for the continued utility of good administrative skills for clinicians and managers, which are likely to become all-the-more important given recent developments in healthcare policy and governance.

Integrated System Health Management (ISHM) is a promising technology that fuses sensor data and historical state-of-health information of components and subsystems to provide actionable information and enable intelligent decision-making regarding the operation and maintenance of aerospace systems. ISHM fundamentally relies on assessments and predictions of system health, including the early detection of failures and estimation of Remaining Useful Life (RUL). Model-based, data-driven or hybrid reasoning techniques can be utilized to maximise the timeliness and reliability of diagnosis and prognosis information. This study identifies and explores key attributes that are considered to be desirable by Pacific health managers for the effective management of Pacific health services in New Zealand. It replicates Phase I of the study undertaken by Boldy, Chen and Jain Attributes of Effective Managers and Implications for Health Care Management Education in the Asia–Pacific Region (1994) (the Boldy study).

The Boldy study is part of the International Project on Culture and Management (IPCaM). The aim of IPCaM is to explore the role of national culture in managerial behaviour and effectiveness. The project has three distinct phases and overall covers in excess of 60 countries worldwide. Phase I of the Boldy study aimed to identify desirable managerial qualities of effective managers in particular cultures. Eleven countries in theAsia–Pacific region participated. Based on a questionnaire survey, managers and students from the participant countries were asked to provide their perceptions of attributes that are desirable for effective management. The study then discussed the broad implications of these findings for health care management education. Phase II of IPCaM will assess the effectiveness of the culturally desired managerial qualities in the respective cultures. Phase III will focus on the development of culturally appropriate management education.

Findings from the current study show that Pacific health managers and participants in the Boldy study held similar views on some desirable attributes, such as nurturing constructs and social/behaviour theory (as a key component of training), and the requirement for political and classical management skills. The Pacific health managers also rated the personality constructs of high spirited/extrovert, assertiveness and humility, general knowledge and history of organisation as desirable and essential. The concept of collective responsibility, and relationships were also considered fundamental to being an effective manager within a Pacific health service in New Zealand. The participants in the current study also perceived cultural attributes as central to effective management.

Leadership in health care focuses mainly on achieving the goal of effective health care delivery as a team under the guidance of another team member. Leadership in the health sector has become a key point in improving patient safety and health management as a whole. Delivering effective health care services to patients may be more efficient when health care professionals unite and act as a single body that is patient oriented. By developing a structure where leadership influences health management, the outcome of services rendered to patients is being greatly ameliorated. The Institute of Medicine (IOM) has outlined a number of actions which health care organizations need to implement in order to improve patient safety. The Baldrige National Quality Program also recognizes the importance of leaders and has stated the roles of leaders and what is expected of them in order to achieve excellence in health care. Leadership models are the fundamentals of leadership, which determine whether the objectives will be met as in the interest of the organization. This research was aimed to determine the impact of leadership on health management. This explores the characteristics of a leader, leadership styles that may be implemented, and their effect on outcome in a health care organization.

Turbulence is usually considered a negative property of an organization’s environment. Yet turbulence is also a feature of an organization’s internal dynamics and may be useful for productivity. This article argues that interactions between the formal and informal management of trouble produce relational turbulence that may mobilize resources and collective action, or conversely lead to dysfunction and crisis. The author links relational psychoanalytic theory with social constructionist perspectives in exploring intersubjective dynamics of trouble and its repercussions of turbulence. Based on a longitudinal interorganizational ethnography, an atypical mental healthcare organization is described – a democratic therapeutic community – in which turbulence plays a central function, but in two very different ways. In a restorative mode, turbulence generates formative spaces that are creative and have a regulating function, useful for organizational productivity. Conversely, a perverse mode is destructive and may produce intractable perverse spaces, leading to organizational dysfunction, crisis and even collapse. This is theorized by extending the psychoanalytic concept of liminal, transitional space. In contrast to the notion of transitional space as a safe, protective area, the author develops a model of distinct formative and perverse spaces created by relational turbulence in organizations. In human service organizations, where the generation, trading and management of trouble are inherent in an organization’s internal dynamics, turbulence may be a valuable resource, but one that, in the perverse mode, can be immensely destructive.

This commentary reviews a recent piece by Burton and Rycroft-Malone on the use of Resource Based View (RBV) in healthcare organizations. It first outlines the core content of their piece. It then discusses their attempts to extend RBV to the analysis of large scale quality improvement efforts in healthcare. Some critique is elaborated. The broader question of why RBV seems to be migrating into healthcare management research is considered. They conclude RBV is a promising new theory for healthcare organizations.

Diabetes mellitus is a common complication in pregnancy. Its classification has been reviewed to reflect the various aetiological factors. Pre conception care, early antenatal bookings dedicated multidisciplinary ante natal care, and delivery in a centre with neonatal facility would reduce morbidty and mortality associated with the condition.
The study is aimed at accessing the prevalence of gestational diabetes among pregnant women in Maiduguri Metropolis. 250 pregnant women were recruited for the study, all in their second and third trimesters attending University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, State Specialist Hospital, Borno Medical Clinic and Nakowa specialist hospital antenatal clinics. Questionnaires were administered on each woman and data was collected. Results showed presence of risk factors among respondents. These includes having miscarriages, stillbirths, glucosuria, having GDM in previous pregnancies, history of diabetes in first degree relative, being obese, being delivered of large and small babies in previous pregnancies etc. 11.2% of the respondents were diagnosed with gestational diabetes mellitus in this pregnancy. This could be attributed to lack of adequate exercise and feeding among respondents. Recommendations in this study include prenatal counseling, antenatal care, exercises, eating balanced diet etc. by pregnant women to improve maternal and child health and reduce morbidity and mortality of both mother and child.

The most common flaw of most research text is that they tend to assume too much basic knowledge on the part of their readers, who as a result, are soon lost in the complexity of the subject and statistics often combined in most texts.
Albert Einsten once commented that a scientific subject should be kept as simple as possible – but no simpler. I believe, however, that it should be possible to introduce the subject to students in a very simple fashion and to develop it in such a way that the reader is led to the heart of the subject while confusion is kept to a minimum.
In this text, I have tried to keep the narrow path between maximum simplification and scientific accuracy to make every student/researcher have independent capabilities to start and finish a research project. This report aims to provide an updated analysis of labor market trends for the health workforce in Peru, focusing on the basic health team, physician, nurse, and midwife, and other health professionals related to current priorities. Peru has been labeled as a country with a shortage of health professionals (that is, with less than 25 professionals per 10,000 inhabitants), and although the most recent numbers indicate that the situation has improved, the shortages are bound to become more acute as the country aims to achieve Universal Health Coverage. The authors found that the country trains both in public and private universities a large number of professionals, but that the majority of trained professionals do not then go on to work for the public sector.
