International News reporting

International news, with its own characteristics and dynamics, are loaded with a strong power of representation and are for the majority of the people the first way to get an idea of the world. Their international projection often implies considerations related to media geopolitics or traditional forms of propaganda. News and media literacy limited interest on inter- national news requires thinking about the design of a model to critically approach news on international issues. The results obtained through an online survey with an adult Spanish-speaking population suggest the existence of different levels of critical approach to news on international issues, ranging from passive consumption to the exercise of an informed and active citizenship of the world.

Trinta anos depois dos debates sobre a Nova Ordem Mundial da Informação e Comunicação (NOMIC), as desigualdades nos fluxos globais de informação permanecem,porém num contexto em que a produção e a circulação são facilitadas pelas novas tecnologias (NTICs). Este trabalho identifica fatores que contribuem para este aparente paradoxo e propõe mudanças na práxis jornalística – particularmente na cobertura internacional – que podem permitir aos países em desenvolvimento alcançar os objetivos pleiteados pela NOMIC.

This article explores the role that nongovernmental organizations play in the changing landscape of international news. Drawing on archival analysis and 65 interviews with nongovernmental organization professionals, it examines the resource commitments and values guiding research at leading humanitarian and human rights nongovernmental organizations. It finds that staff size, country coverage, and reporting capacity have increased substantially over time and now rival the resources found in major news organizations. Interviews reveal that nongovernmental organization work is guided by values of accuracy, pluralism, advocacy, and timeliness. These values overlap with and sometimes extend commonly held journalistic values, but they are not reducible to them. Findings suggest that nongovernmental organizations provide important ‘boots on the ground’ coverage of international affairs, even as their imbrication with journalistic practices raises important normative questions for nongovernmental organizations, journalists, and news audiences.

Após 25 anos do Relatório MacBride e dos debates sobre a Nova Ordem Mundial da Informação e Comunicação (NOMIC), as assimetrias dos fluxos mundiais de informação permanecem praticamente inalteradas. Embora a comunicação em redes e novas tecnologias de mídia tenham aberto um potencial imenso de mudanças na pauta, na edição e na apuração a distância, o noticiário internacional dos jornais diários brasileiros continua, em larga escala, dependente do material fornecido e filtrado por agências de notícias e veículos estrangeiros. Esta pesquisa identifica o impacto desta configuração no discurso midiático, focando na práxis do jornalismo impresso e na dinâmica das agências de notícias, e propõe alternativas à formação de pauta e à apuração no Jornalismo Internacional.

O processo de convergência das tecnologias de comunicação e a aparente ruptura das estruturas unidirecionais de mídia colocam em xeque o papel histórico das agências de notícias como mecanismos de circulação e distribuição de informação, embora estas persistam como influentes e mantenham suas discretas hegemonias nos fluxos internacionais de informação. Enquanto a esfera acadêmica anglo-saxã (Boyd-Barret, Sreberny, Thussu) mantém produção contínua sobre o tema, acompanhando a evolução de suas rotinas de produção do telégrafo à internet, o núcleo ibero-americano – que teve seu ápice na época dos debates sobre a NOMIC – desviou o foco e, até compreensivelmente, tem privilegiado outros objetos, como a televisão e as telecomunicações. No entanto, as agências continuam fenômeno específico, que exige outros parâmetros de análise e que pode ser melhor compreendido à luz da Economia Política, graças a suas características intrínsecas: pelo fato de não serem veículos de mídia, e sim empresas de distribuição de conteúdo, já que não publicam; terem relação complexa com o Estado e fugirem muitas vezes às convenções de regulação; e operarem sob um modelo de produção essencialmente fordista. O presente artigo propõe uma caracterização das especificidades do objeto de estudo no contexto tecnológico e socioeconômico atual, trazendo considerações sobre o tema fundamentadas pela Economia Política da Comunicação e levantando bibliografia para o contexto da América Latina e particularmente do Brasil, onde o modelo de agências historicamente adotado foi peculiar e radicalmente diferente da maioria dos países, tanto do “Norte” industrializado quanto do “Sul global”.

News media, through their regular publication and broadcasting, are expected to assist in promoting awareness in society, encouraging victims to speak up against injustice, and assisting in bringing culprits into justice system. This research article primarily based on literature review is focused on the following questions: Are news media worldwide reporting rape issues effectively? Why are rape incidents are increasing everyday? What are the areas news media need to improve to make their reporting effective? This article will be important to journalists in order to understand news reporting on sexual violence and rape incidents in Nepal, where 81.51 percent journalists are male. This article briefly outlines a concept of rape, myths related to rape, trends of global media coverage, problems in reporting, and areas of necessary improvement.

O jornalismo de agências de notícias nasceu no século XIX e, a despeito das intensas transformações sofridas pelas tecnologias e formas de organização da produção jornalística desde então, manteve fundamentalmente inalterado seu modelo operacional: dos correspondentes para a redação central, e destas para os clientes. Enquanto jornais e outras mídias sofreram diferentes etapas de modernização e rupturas paradigmáticas nos últimos dois séculos, sofrendo concorrências e adaptações a novos suportes, as agências basicamente iam estendendo sua lógica operacional às novas demandas, sem necessariamente modificá-la. A consolidação da digitalização e das redes eletrônicas (não só internet, mas todos os suportes convergentes) pôs em xeque tal modelo, pela primeira vez, e tem levado estas empresas a buscar novos modelos produtivos e novas práxis jornalísticas. Servindo-se das mais recentes análises de conteúdo sobre serviços de agências de notícias e de entrevistas com profissionais da área, este trabalho contribui com questionamentos sobre o “estado da arte” do jornalismo de agências em época de redes e convergência midiática.

Este artigo pretende constituir-se um guia preliminar para eventuais pesquisas que se debrucem sobre o tema, ao oferecer parâmetros de análise, indicar fontes primárias e secundárias, realizar um levantamento bibliográfico preliminar e apresentar uma proposta de periodização histórica para a evolução da Inter brasileira nestes 200 anos. Ao fim, trata-se de fornecer subsídios a demais pesquisadores que se aventurem a reconstituir o percurso traçado pelo Jornalismo Internacional produzido no Brasil e suas especificidades socioeconômicas, tecnológicas, ideológicas, discursivas e pragmáticas.

In the 1970s and 1980s, an unprecedent enterprise gathered developing countries in the field of communication: the Non-Aligned News Agencies Pool (NANAP), a syndicate of national news agencies from nations of then-called Third World, threaded into an international system to exchange news, primarily among what is nowadays known as the South-South axis. The experiment was led by the state agency of Yugoslavia, Tanjug, andwas fostered by the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) within the framework of the struggle for redesigning the structures of international communication, known as NWICO (New World Information and Communication Order). During at least its first five years, the Pool meant a pragmatic answer to the Third World calls for a change in foreign news coverage and for opening South-South flows of information in a qualitatively and quantitatively balanced way. Moreover, the very organization and operation schemes of the NANAP were distinguished by de-centralization, pliability and free membership, all features grounded on the principles of Yugoslav self-management socialism and which would prove especially fitting to the production conditions in peripherical societies of capitalism. This thesis investigates the legacy of the non-aligned enterprise in current counter-hegemonical developments hinged on networks and in South-South cooperation for international communication in order to build information systems which are independent from the hegemony of First World news agencies.

This article challenges the widespread idea that, in an age of instantaneous and ubiquitously accessible information, foreign correspondents are doomed to disappear. The last study of foreign correspondents in the London hub was conducted 30 years ago. Based on a new study involving a range of in-depth interviews with foreign correspondents in the British capital, the article reveals the ‘‘story behind their stories’’ and the changes that have occurred since then. It particularly focuses on the impact that advances in communication technologies have had on the correspondents’ professional identity, newsgathering routines, and news outputs. The findings contribute to a more nuanced and empirical understanding of the impact of media globalization on the practice of journalism. They underline the increasingly important role of foreign correspondents as ‘‘sense makers’’ within the huge tide of information available. While foreign journalists have to a large extent always fulfilled this function, they appear more needed than ever in a deeply interdependent world. Foreign correspondents are also developing novel ways of reporting. Indeed, rather than a ‘‘crisis’’ of foreign correspondence, we could perhaps be witnessing its renaissance.

La sociedad moderna es una época de la explosión de la información, aparecen cada vez más medios de comunicación y el ritmo de vida de las personas se acelera cada vez más.

El estilo de vida actual y la situación de los medios crea el problema de distinguir que información es verdadera o y cual es falsa. Como consecuencia la gente no cree completamente en los medios electrónicos y por ello sigue consumiendo la prensa escrita.
 
En los últimos años la influencia de China en el mercado internacional está creciendo y muchos países están dedicando un mayor espacio de noticias a lo que suceden en China.
Mediante el análisis de un año de lo publicado por un periódico mexicano se busca analizar las noticias sobre China que México publica.

 Se busca conocer la imagen de China que se presenta en México y así conocer cual es la tendencia; si es positiva o negativa. Con tal estudio se conocera la idea general que tiene México de China. Las noticias tienen un gran poder de influencia en una sociedad. Es primordial mantener la verdad y autenticidad en los informes noticiosos para no distorcional la vición de un individuo sobre una cultura o país. El profesionalismo de un reportero debe tener la caracteristica fudamental de comunicar la verdad y no dejar que sus intereses personales e ideas culturales interfieran con ello.

Subject of the study is a little-known aspect of Chamberlain’s appeasement policy, namely, the propaganda campaign towards the German public from September 1938 until May 1940. Although there is a vast literature about appeasement, Chamberlain’s efforts to reach the German people by way of propaganda have so far received no attention from historians. The thesis reconstructs for the first time the history of British German-language propaganda dur-ing Chamberlain’s premiership. The evolution of the institutional framework, the changing strategies and the contents of this propaganda campaign are described in detail, offering a deep insight into the thinking of the British Government about German society and exposing a naive belief in the power of propaganda.
In the thesis a new methodological approach is adopted by integrating the study of high poli-tics at the diplomatic level with the study of the propaganda campaign towards a foreign pub-lic. Whereas conventional interpretations consider appeasement a foreign policy strategy con-ducted exclusively on the diplomatic stage between the two governments of Britain and Ger-many, the author maintains that appeasement has rather to be viewed as a policy consisting of two equal and complementary pillars. The first pillar was the well-known dual policy of deter-rence and conciliation directed towards the Nazi regime at a governmental level. The second pillar was the propaganda campaign directed towards the German public over the heads of the Nazi regime. The propaganda campaign, while on the whole reflecting Chamberlain’s foreign policy on the governmental level, seems to have been regarded by the British government as an additional deterrent element to the diplomatic pillar: Hitler was to be warned that he would risk serious opposition from his own people if he provoked war, and thus be induced to seek a peaceful solution to his territorial claims. In this sense, the propaganda campaign was a safe-guard for the conciliatory part of appeasement, namely, the readiness to consider favourably Germany’s legitimate territorial and economic claims.
The thesis identifies five phases during which Chamberlain attached varying degrees of im-portance to the propaganda instrument in his dealings with Germany. Thus, the significance of propaganda increased in direct relation to the deterioration of Anglo-German negotiations on the diplomatic level. The propaganda pillar even outlasted the outbreak of war and the col-lapse of the first pillar: After negotiations on an official diplomatic level had come to an end on 3rd September 1939, Chamberlain sought to continue his policy of goodwill towards the German people by means of propaganda in the hope to stir up a revolution against Hitler.
In the end, however, British propaganda proved to be a failure. The author identifies two rea-sons for this. The first was a lack of credibility, i.e. the discrepancy between the picture of events as presented in British propaganda, and the reality as experienced by the German pub-lic. The second, and even more important, reason was, however, a whole host of unrealistic British assumptions about the Nazi state and the character of the German people. In particular, the British political elite unconsciously transferred British democratic traditions onto Hitler’s totalitarian regime. Chamberlain’s propaganda was based on the premise that public opinion did carry some weight in the Third Reich and that the German people, even though living un-der a dictatorship, would cherish similar political ideals of democratic participation and a dis-like of Hitler as British subjects.

O objetivo do artigo é analisar se as notícias transmitidas por agencias internacionais podem atuar como soft power na América Latina, levando em consideração novos desafios da era da informação e eventos como os atentados de 11 de Setembro. Nesse contexto, procura desvendar as relações de poder no mundo contemporâneo que vão para além da esfera do poder econômico e militar (hard power), desdobrando-se no chamado poder brando ou soft power – o tipo de poder que compreende a imagem, propaganda  e cooperação de Estados por meio da cultura, valores e política interna e externa – enfocando o jornalismo, com destaque para o jornalismo internacional.

Riots that erupted in the northern Nigerian city of Kaduna over a newspaper article that some Muslims interpreted as blaspheming the Prophet Muhammad on account of Nigeria’s decision to host the 2002 edition of the Miss World beauty pageant captured the attention of the media around the world. This article investigates how the British press framed the riots in their opinion columns and editorials. Through an interpretive textual analysis of the opinion pages, the study shows that  while the ideological persuasions of left-leaning British press predisposed them to express opinions on the Miss World riots that resonated with what might loosely be characterized as the “Islamic perspective,” those of the conservative British press shared ideological similarities with what might be considered the standpoints of the “liberal,” predominantly Christian, southern Nigerian newspapers. This highlights the limited utility of such facile labels as “liberal” and “conservative” in describing the ideological temperaments of the press. It also problematizes notions of media imperialism and exposes the theoretical and empirical inadequacy of gazing at local religious conflicts from the perspectives of international religious contexts.

THE CONTINUOUS NEWS ECONOMY On the conditions of production at news channels in general and at Euronews in particular
This article, based on two areas of inquiry, shows how the appearance of national and international continuous news channels has helped to transform the general economy of production and broadcasting of news. After defining the characteristics of the conditions of news production at these channels, the authors show how those conditions have established new models of labour organization, occupations and professional frames of reference: for example, working in conditions of urgency and the development of "seated" and versatile journalism. Finally, they briefly analyse some of the effects of these conditions of production on the processing of information.

This article conducts a discursive interface analysis of World Fixer, the most visible online platform currently connecting foreign correspondents with local news workers who can help them translate interviews, navigate unfamiliar places, and stay safe in the field. Placing Johanna Drucker's theory of the digital interface into conversation with the critical frameworks found in global communication studies, anti-colonial theory, and anti-racist communication scholarship, the goal is to illuminate both the opportunities that the World Fixer site provides its users, as well as the inequalities that the website still perpetuates.

In McLuhan's global village news about the world is accessible everywhere and through a variety of media. But for the volume and the speed the news on the world developments is received, the knowledge and understanding of the complex situations and relations around the globe still lack the whole picture. International news coverage is less extensive, complies to the rules and needs of a national/ domestic news agenda and even serves the interests of national political elites. Thus, people tend to consume increasingly more news, but they still lack a wider, more profound and multi-aspect picture of the international developments and this paradox applies also to the coverage of international crises. This paper focuses on the challenges journalists face in covering international crises in a globalized, interconnected world and emphasizes the need for journalists to challenge the banal nationalism approach to international news and to contribute to the development of a transnational approach to the world developments with a global perspective and a transnational way of journalistic writing. In order to analyse these points the paper uses as an example the coverage of the immigration crisis and the European response.

This book was first published in 1987 when Prof. K.M.Shrivastava moved from journalism profession to media academics to fill a void of Indian books in the subject, He was then heading the department of Journalism and Mass Communication, Panjabi University, Patiala.  This book has been reprinted and revised several times with changes technology and practices.

This study examines the war-reporting industry’s attitude toward news “fixers”—the locally based
contacts who become news employees, by helping foreign reporters translate interviews, build contacts, and navigate the cultural contexts with which correspondents are increasingly unfamiliar in the era of “parachute journalism.” Conducting a critical discourse analysis of 189 articles published in English-language journalism trade publications, the study seeks to answer these research questions:

(1) How do Anglophone editors and reporters understand and value the labor of news fixers working in conflict zones?
(2) How do Anglophone editors and reporters discuss the safety of their news fixers?

Drawing upon the critical frameworks found in the field of global media ethics, the study will suggest that news fixers have the potential to facilitate more complex and productive “global–local exchanges,” which could in turn lead to a global media ethics that is, in the words of Wasserman, “truly dialogic and critical.” Yet, despite the valuable cultural perspective that fixers can bring, a critical discourse analysis shows that these media employees are currently undervaluedand underprotected by the editors and correspondents who hire them.

O jornalismo de agências de notícias guarda particularidades e idiossincrasias até hoje pouco reconhecidas e, no contexto brasileiro, virtualmente ignoradas. Frente a este cenário, o trabalho contribui com proposições para uma pesquisa histórica sobre o jornalismo de agências, ambos nacional e internacional, particularmente contrastando os diferentes modelos adotados nas distintas realidades: EUA e Europa Ocidental, de um lado; o Leste Europeu e os países em desenvolvimento, de outro. Acredita-se, aqui, que conhecer a história do jornalismo de agências revela-se como capítulo importante para a história do jornalismo em todas as suas dimensões.

A sizable portion of our everyday knowledge about sub-Saharan Africa comes from the work of international news reporters on the continent. The profession of foreign correspondent constituted itself around a group of privileged witnesses of history, often immersed in a mythological aura, but the emergence of digital media has established some tension around a destructuration-restructuration of the journalistic field. The rhetoric of the pro-am revolution signifies the end of an era for international journalism due to the rise of citizen journalism. This research assesses how professional international news reporters are repositioning themselves in a transforming communicative environment, and how they interpret their own occupation and the role of rising actors in the transnational mediasphere.

This study advances the protest paradigm as a transnational theory by examining how ideological affiliations within and across national borders influence the framing of a protest movement. Our empirical focus is the coverage of the 2016-17 South Korean “candlelight” protests to oust conservative President Park Gyun-hye in Korean and U.S. newspapers. Content analysis of six months of coverage suggests that liberal publications in both nations (Kyunghyang Shinmun and New York Times) were supportive of the movement, framing the protests as large yet peaceful and relying on protesters for information. In contrast, the conservative press in the U.S. (Wall Street Journal) was closer in its coverage to Korea’s conservative publication (Chosun Ilbo), which was defensive of Park and her supporters. We argue that ideological affinities can operate beyond national boundaries — what we term “ideological parallelism” — to make news organizations sympathetic or hostile toward a social movement. But nationalist sentiments also remain significant to the extent that a foreign (Korean) social movement affects a nation’s (U.S.) foreign policy. We identify a novel framing device — Gaze — under which the coverage of both U.S. newspapers converged and considered the adverse implications of candlelight protests for America’s relations with South Korea and its containment of North Korea and China. We also show how the U.S. media’s Gaze recursively shapes South Korean press coverage, indicating that transnational protest frames impact local perceptions of social movements and can potentially influence their legitimacy and outcome.

This article interrogates the usefulness application of social theory in the realm of international media organisations in society. It outlines a critical and international political economy approach to understanding media in society. It looks at integrating various interrelated and competing theories that intersect and mutate. For this purpose, the case study of the global news agency, Thomson-Reuters is analysed.
