"Abstract:
Ovid's "Ars Amatoria" is meant to offer a true recantation of amor, a palinode of love that includes an apology of poetry. Palinode and apology have become necessary and urgent, for Ovid, for two reasons, which offer a double challenge.
The first challenge comes from the love poetry by his contemporaries. Elegy is lament, protest, recrimination, regret. Occasionally praise, it morphs, more
often, into blame. Supposedly intended to convey erotic passion and impatience for pleasure, it turns into an intermittent profession of pain.
The second challenge comes from the carmina of Lucretius. In those carmina,both love and poetry are crucial, and yet highly problematical, because both, poetry and love, undermine the project of an unrelenting argument on behalf of reason. Passion and fiction are a threat. The philosophical effect of such a critique is immense and terrifying.

I will set out to outline the discord between anti-erotic ratio and ars amatoria. I will then be in a position to provide a panoramic view of Ovid’s work. Ovid’s poetry, I will argue, is philosophy, the musical thinking of a lover of myths, a philómythos who, as Aristotle would put it, was a sort of philosopher, philósophos."

A major premise frames the most normative arguments of the Republic: the characters of men are the cause of the characters of poleis. The government of Kallipolis is the best of all, explains Socrates, for a very simple reason: it is the government of the best people (aristokratia). In a demokratia, on the other hand, anyone can be selected by lot to hold office, and anyone can say whatever they like. While the best of the Guardians care about the political good in the superlative, ordinary people do not care at all.  The People tramples under foot the very idea that we should choose and educate the magistrates. The People cannot be a philosopher. And yet, in Athens, political discourse and the performative language involved in the actual administration of the polis (oaths, decrees, praises) show a passionate, earnest, quotidian quest for the best in words and deeds. Epigraphic evidence reveals a polis paved with very good intentions, engaged in a democratic perfectionism that Plato refuses to recognize.

Une prémisse majeure met en place les arguments les plus normatifs de la République : les caractères des hommes sont la cause des caractères des cités. Le gouvernement de Kallipolis est le meilleur de tous, explique Socrate, pour une raison très simple: c'est le gouvernement des meilleurs (aristokratia). Dans une démokratia, en revanche, n'importe qui peut revêtir un rôle de pouvoir par tirage au sort, et n'importe qui peut dire n’importe quoi. Tandis que les meilleurs des Gardiens se soucient du bien politique au superlatif, le peuple n’en a cure. Il foule aux pieds l’idée même qu’il faudrait choisir et éduquer les magistrats. Le Peuple ne saurait être philosophe. Et pourtant, à Athènes, la parole politique et le langage à l’œuvre dans l’administration de la cité (serments, décrets, éloges) montrent une quête acharnée du mieux possible. Le témoignage épigraphique nous dévoile une citée pavée de bonnes intentions, engagée dans un perfectionnisme démocratique que Platon refuse de reconnaître.

Pompey and three epic similes in Lucan’s Bellum Ciuile:
erotic elements and dialogism

This article deals with the animal similes employed by Lucan to describe Pompey or the Pompeians in three passages of the Civil War (1.327-9, 2.601-7 and 4.237-42). I argue the case for a strong interconnection between these similes, as well as for the prominence, in at least two of them, of elements that point to significant erotic imagery. This sexual innuendo is triggered mostly (but not only) by intertextuality (especially with Vergil). I also aim to show that the similes bring out Pompey’s shortcomings, associating him or his followers with indications of irrational violence. There is a sexual aspect, Lucan suggests, to the motivations behind such violence. Lucan’s handling of the similes is entirely dialogical: the different similes emanate from different speakers and/or situations, point to each other via a number of sometimes striking parallels, and offer contrasting or complementary views on the same subject.

Comic characters come on stage, and wonder how they can make the audience laugh. They expose each other, and themselves, to mockery. To make others laugh is not an accident for them; it is the purpose of their being there. Tragic characters, on the contrary, cannot take laughter. These individuals are of high status, high-minded, highly serious. Mockery can only offend, hurt, or infuriate these women and men, who suffer and expect, in response to their sufferings, deference or pity. There is no place for laughter in a tragedy. And yet, the terror of laughter -- the fear of being ridiculed, when one is in pain -- is a recurring theme in Sophocles’ Philoctetes and Ajax, in Euripides’ Medea and Bacchae. Fear of laughter acts as a compelling cause of murder or suicide.
In the first section of this paper, I discuss the threatening prospect of being laughed at, for tragic characters. I argue that this anxiety conveys the awareness that an audience of enemies might react to pain, not with respect or sympathy, but with malicious, cruel pleasure. This awareness offers a meta-theatrical hint. Since one might laugh at Medea’s humiliation or Ajax’ rage, a tragedy is, admittedly, a potential comedy. By making of this possibility a frightening thought, however, tragic plays reframe themselves as tragic. The characters allude to a comic reception, recoil at the horror of it, and decide to commit an irreversible act of violence.  Back to tragedy!
In the second section of the paper, I reopen the debate on Aristotle’s distinction of tragedy and comedy. From the standpoint of the tragic figures who tremble to be treated as laughing stock, I argue that Aristotle has perfectly understood the relevant opposition of the two genres. It is the polarity of pain and pleasure that organises Aristotle’s theory of theatricality -- and of the passions. A proper understanding of catharsis corroborates this. It is, of course, possible to blur the line (as Aristophanes does all the time, by making tragic characters and tragic poets, into comic figures), but the line is there. The poets test, and re-confirm, its constraints on stage; the philosopher corroborates its value.

D'achever de faire table rase de la mémoire, de l'esprit critique, de l'humour, du jeu sur les mots, de la tendresse, de la distance ? N'est-il pas temps de tomber dans l'ici et maintenant? Que ce soit pour lever le poing ou ouvrir le porte-monnaie ? De se faire égorger face à Rome et de forger nos égorgeurs ? Car n'est-ce pas cela désormais l'école ? Un champ de ruines, jonché de fautes d'orthographe et d'erreurs sur les mots, d'une savante interversion des termes où l'actif devient passif, le pluriel singulier, le masculin féminin, et le référent bondissant ? Un microcosme qui se gargarise de lui-même, en circuit fermé, sans idéal et sans héros. Dernier bastion, ultime détonateur, les Humanités les bien nommées. Et, divine surprise, tous de s'insurger. Destruction de la grammaire, appauvrissement des mathématiques, bannissement des dates dans l'histoire, tout cela était passé sans beaucoup de murmures. Et voilà qu'on se réveille, avec l'annonce de la dernière réforme de la Ré-éducation nationale. Touche pas mon Socrate, ma chouette et ma louve ! C'est que tout le monde sent bien que les Humanités sont la pierre angulaire de ce qui nous construit, nous forge et nous unit. La dernière chose qui fasse de nous des Européens. N'est-ce pas faute de ce ciment commun que bien des enfants sortent de l'école illettrés, incivils, inaptes, et parfois inspirant la terreur, faute de mots qu'on leur aurait appris à manier, avec lesquels ont leur aurait appris à jouer : l'humour ou l'ironie peuvent-ils survivre à la perte du jeu sur les mots ? N'est-ce pas faute de ce ciment commun que la parole se réduit désormais au « bar-bar-bar » inintelligible qui a donné le mot « barbare » ? Cicéron célébrant la prééminence du gouvernement civil – représenté par la toge, habit des sénateurs – sur le militaire, écrivait « Que les armes cèdent à la toge, les lauriers à l'éloquence ! ». Phrase qui se traduirait aujourd'hui, à l'inverse, par l'art de la parole se réduisant au buzz médiatique. Que sert d'aller pleurer sur Mossoul, sur Nemrod, sur les bibliothèques flambées de Sarajevo, quand on détruit aussi férocement, aussi bêtement, aussi criminellement le patrimoine invisible qui est le nôtre ?

The present paper's point of departure is the premise that, in order to better understand the nature of data in the Humanities, the bottom-up approach is the most fruitful one. This implies case studies made for each project or initiative working on particular set of objects (texts, images, monuments, artefacts, etc.) and applying particular DH methods and tools. Such case studies can successfully describe the specificities of processing the given objects as well as the issues and results of the given approach. When many such case studies are compared, trends and patterns can be detected and least common denominators can be drawn that enable a better understanding of what Humanities data at large are like and what is special about dealing with them in comparison with other types of datasets (e.g. scientific, statistical, etc.). The topic of this paper will be the Telamon Project which aims at creating an online collection of the Ancient Greek inscriptions from the territory of today's Bulgaria. It was started some years ago by a team of scholars at the Department of Classics to the University of Sofia, it has received technical and financial aid from the University's IT Centre and the Centre for Excellence in the Humanities and it currently undergoes the finishing stages of its preparation in the framework of the National CLaDA-BG Consortium (conducting activities and implementing national contributions for CLARIN-EU and DARIAH-EU in Bulgaria). Its web site with a small initial collection of inscriptions will be launched for the public in 2019. Ancient Greek epigraphic heritage in Bulgaria encompasses monuments from the period between 6. c. BCE and 4. c. CE, covers the territory of the whole country and counts more than 4,500 inscriptions (the number is growing as new monuments are constantly found and published). For the time being, the project team concentrates on presenting the inscriptional heritage of only two major Greek cities in Roman Thrace, Philippopolis (today's Plovdiv) and Augusta Traiana (today's Stara Zagora). The perspectives are to gradually expand the territory covered. But even the fullest and exhaustive collection of monuments would be relatively small from the point of view of data science. The whole of ancient inscriptions from Bulgaria would still be quite far from big data. In Digital Epigraphy and the related DH fields, even large collections of texts, images, and objects from a single given project initiative are mostly amenable to processing and analysis and their data management does not necessarily require heuristic approaches. But, in order to fully cover even the first several hundred or so monuments from Roman Thrace, a significant amount of time, effort and specialized skills need to be invested. The nature and content of the monuments can be diverse and complex. For the description of all the features thereof, TEI XML according to the standards and schemas of the EpiDoc subset for epigraphic and papyrological documents is applied. This makes possible the thorough and detailed description of all the characteristics of the text and the material object that carries it, together with its history, its editors in digital and analogue corpora and other similar metadata. The visualisation, cataloguing and indexing of such data which is done with the EFES front-end service and editing platform depends very much on this accurate description. All this implies a great stress on the adequate encoding of single monuments and its important place in the workflow as compared to the subsequent processing which is much easier if good quality of the encoded data is ensured. This leads to the question of the human resources needed to conduct such work. The most valuable contributions come from trained epigraphers who have additionally acquired XML encoding skills. That is why, regular trainings are essential for the sustainability of such a project. On the other hand, the cross-section of scholars skilled both in the complex discipline of Greek epigraphy and in the technicalities of mark-up will always be relatively small and few people at the same time could be recruited for such initiatives resulting in the gradual pace of the enlargement of the digital epigraphic corpora. Crucial information conveyed by historical documents like ancient inscriptions are the names, events, people and places mentioned in them: in other words, named entities. The encoding of NE's, together with dates and periods, and their proper organising in authority lists is among the most important tasks of an EpiDoc encoder. Its importance is increased by the linking of the respective NE's with external authorities such as prosopographies and gazetteers such as Pleiades, together with the content linked to it from Pelagios, which enables the integration of monuments from a particular collection to a larger set of linked open data. "Πρόταση διδασκαλίας στο πλαίσιο της διαθεματικότητας: το πολίτευμα της αρχαίας Αθήνας μέχρι την κλασσική εποχή. Συμβολή στην διδακτική της ιστορίας Α΄ Γυμνασίου και Α΄ Λυκείου".  Περίληψη Στόχος της παρούσας διδακτικής πρότασης είναι να παρουσιάσει ένα διαθεματικό μοντέλο διδασκαλίας της αρχαίας ελληνικής ιστορίας στην Β/βάθμια εκπαίδευση, το οποίο μπορεί να εφαρμοστεί στην Αθήνα και σε κοντινούς δήμους, επί τη βάση των αρχών της βιωματικότητας και της εποπτείας. Συγκεκριμένα στοχεύει στην πληρέστερη διδασκαλία των διδακτικών ενοτήτων που αφορούν στο πολίτευμα της αρχαίας Αθήνας, αφ' ενός με στοχευμένες επισκέψεις στους αρχαιολογικούς χώρους και τα μουσεία που συνδέονται με αυτό, αφ' ετέρου με έρευνα, μελέτη των μαθητών και βιωματικές δράσεις στο χώρο του σχολείου. Εισαγωγή Η επιστημονική συζήτηση για τη διδασκαλία του μαθήματος της ιστορίας είναι μεγάλη και έχουν άπειρες μελέτες και διδακτικές προσεγγίσεις γραφεί για το θέμα αυτό. Τόσο σε επίπεδο διδασκαλίας, όσο και σε επίπεδο εποπτικών μέσων έχει σημειωθεί εξαιρετική πρόοδος. Η εστίαση η δική μου είναι, αξιοποιώντας τις σύγχρονες μεθόδους διδασκαλίας, τα εποπτικά μέσα του σχολείου, κυρίως τα μέσα τεχνολογίας, όπως ψηφιακούς προβολείς, διαδραστικούς πίνακες κλπ, εφαρμογές πολυμέσων, (Αναστασιάδης), ψηφιακές αναπαραστάσεις μνημείων, ακόμα και προγράμματα που είναι δυνατόν να φτιαχτούν για το σκοπό του μαθήματος (Howell & Porter 2003 • Bιδάκη 2002 • Καβαλιεράτου & Ρούσου 2009) να δώσω έμφαση στην μέγιστη αξιοποίηση της ίδιας της τοπογραφίας, των μνημείων, της αρχιτεκτονικής, της γλυπτικής, της κεραμικής και γενικά του υλικού πολιτισμού των αρχαίων στο μάθημα της ιστορίας των αρχαίων χρόνων του Γυμνασίου (Κατσουλάκος, Κοκκορού-Αλευρά & Σκουλάτος 2016) και του Λυκείου (Μαστραπάς 2012). Η όλη ιδέα αυτού του μοντέλου διδασκαλίας γεννήθηκε κατά την εικοσαετή διδασκαλία μου στην δευτεροβάθμια και (τριτοβάθμια) εκπαίδευση από τη συνήθειά μου να αξιοποιώ στην προετοιμασία και την υλοποίηση των μαθημάτων μου εποπτικό υλικό σχετικά με την τοπογραφία της αρχαίας Αθήνας και το αρχαιολογικό υλικό που συνδέεται με κάθε διδακτική ενότητα. Επισκέψεις σε μουσεία και αρχαιολογικούς χώρους που έγιναν μέσα στο πλαίσιο εκπαιδευτικών εκδρομών, ταυτόχρονα με εκπαιδευτικές δραστηριότητες στο χώρο του σχολείου έδωσαν εντυπωσιακά αποτελέσματα στα τμήματα που δίδασκα. Αυτός ο μη προγραμματισμένος συστηματικά τρόπος διδασκαλίας μου έδωσε την ιδέα ενός γενικού προγραμματισμού διδασκαλίας όλων των ενοτήτων της διδακτέας ύλης σε άμεση σχέση με την τοπογραφία και τα μνημεία της αρχαίας Αθήνας.
