Spatio-temporal patterns of snowmelt and flowering times affect fruiting success in Erythronium grandiflorum Pursh (Liliaceae) in subalpine western Colorado, USA. From 1990 to 1995, I measured the consistency across years of snowmelt patterns and flowering times along a permanent transect. In most years since 1993, I have monitored fruit set in temporal cohorts (early- to late-flowering groups of plants) at one site. To assess ‘pollination limitation’, I have also conducted supplemental hand-pollination experiments at various times through the blooming season. The onset of blooming is determined by snowmelt, with the earliest years starting a month before the latest years owing to variation in winter snowpack accumulation. Fruit set is diminished or prevented entirely by killing frosts in some years, most frequently but not exclusively for the earlier cohorts. A method has been developed to determine the false-positive effects on acetylcholinesterase inhibition in the TLC assay based on Ellman's method. Various aldehydes and amines have been tested in order to determine whether the observed inhibition is due to a true enzyme inhibition or due to the inhibition of the reaction between thiocholine and 5,5′-dithiobis-(2-nitrobenzoic acid). 4-Dimethylaminobenzaldehyde, 3-ethoxy-4-hydroxybenzaldehyde, diethylamine, triethylamine, triethanolamine and tyramine showed real enzyme inhibition, although their activity was about 103 times lower than that shown by galanthamine. Heptanal, decanal, cinnamaldehyde, anisaldehyde, benzaldehyde, hexylamine and tryptamine appeared to show a non-specific chemical inhibition. By checking this chemical inhibition on the TLC assay, the true enzyme inhibition could be distinguished from the false-positive chemical inhibition observed in the toluene extract of Nerine bowdenii in the course of isolation of active compounds. • Plant productivity in deserts may be more directly responsive to soil water availability than to precipitation. However, measurement of soil moisture alone may not be enough to elucidate plant responses to precipitation pulses, as edaphic factors may influence productivity when soil moisture is adequate.• The first objective of the study was to determine the responses of the aboveground annual net primary productivity (ANPP) of three perennial species (from different functional groups) in a Chihuahuan Desert grassland to variation in natural precipitation (annual and seasonal) and a 25% increase in seasonal precipitation (supplemental watering in summer and winter). Secondly, ANPP responses to other key environmental and soil parameters were explored during dry, average, and wet years over a 5-yr period.• ANPP predictors for each species were dynamic. High ANPP in Dasylirion leiophyllum was positively associated with higher soil NH4-N and frequent larger precipitation events, while that in Bouteloua curtipendula was positively correlated with frequent small summer precipitation events with short inter-pulse periods and supplemental winter water. Bulb mites of the genus Rhizoglyphus (Claparède) (Acari: Acaridae) have been identified as pests of many crops and ornamentals in storage, in the greenhouse, and in the field. The most important hosts are species in the family Liliaceae (e.g. Allium spp.), but bulb mites will often attack other important crops such as potatoes (Solanum sp.) and carrots (Daucus carota). Despite their economic importance and broad distribution, the systematics of the genus remains in a state of confusion and is in need of a comprehensive revision. In addition, the field biology and ecology of these mites is not well understood, and methods for sampling, monitoring, and loss assessment are limited. Subfamily Hyacinthoideae (Hyacinthaceae) comprises more than 400 species. Members are distributed in sub-Saharan Africa, Madagascar, India, eastern Asia, the Mediterranean region and Eurasia. Hyacinthoideae, like many other plant lineages, show disjunct distribution patterns. The aim of this study was to reconstruct the biogeographical history of Hyacinthoideae based on phylogenetic analyses, to find the possible ancestral range of Hyacinthoideae and to identify factors responsible for the current disjunct distribution pattern.

Interspecific hybrids between Lilium longiflorum (L, 2n=2x=24) andLilium rubellum (R, 2n=2x=24) were produced with the aim of transferring desirable horticultural traits from L. rubellum to L. longiflorum. All F1 hybrids (LR, 2n=2x=24) and BC1 individuals (LLR, 2n=3x=36) were phenotypically uniform for plant height, flowering time, leaf shape and flower colour. The BC1 plants were, in spite of their triploid nature, fertile and could be used as a female parent in backcrossings with autotetraploid L. longiflorum (LLLL, 2n=4x=48). Twelve BC2 individuals were obtained and three of them were selected for further chromosome analysis. As L. longiflorum and L. rubellum chromosomes were indistinguishable in the hybrids, genomic in- situ hybridization (GISH) was applied to establish the parentage of the chromosomes of the F1 hybrids and the BC1 and BC2 progenies. GISH confirmed the LLRR constitution of the doubled amphimonoploid (allodiploid), and the LLR constitution of all BC1 plants. The three selected BC2 plants were, as expected, aneuploid, containing three complete sets of L. longiflorum chromosomes and six, seven or eight L. rubellum chromosomes, respectively. However, L/R translocation or recombinant chromosomes could not be demonstrated in the mitotic metaphase complements of the F1, BC1 and BC2 plants. In spite of the high frequencies of homoeologous recombination in the F1 hybrids (LR) pollen was found to be sterile in all cases. At metaphase I of the pollen mother cells of the BC1 plants, genome painting did not reveal any cases of homoeologous pairing and recombination between L and R chromosomes. This lack of exchange between homoeologous chromosome segments indicates complete preferential pairing of the L and R chromosomes in the F1 (amphidiploid) and BC1 plants. It seems that the preferential pairing in the F1 and BC1 hybrids hinder the introgression of the chromosome segments or species-specific genes into the recipient for breeding purposes.

An allotriploid (ALA, 2n=3 x=36) BC(1) plant was obtained by backcrossing a diploid F(1) interspecific hybrid (LA, 2n=2 x=24), derived from a Lilium longiflorum (L genome) and an Asiatic hybrid (A genome), to the latter parent. This allotriploid was backcrossed to a diploid Asiatic hybrid (2n=2 x=24) and to an allotetraploid (LLAA, 2n=4 x=48) LA hybrid. A total of 25 plants of these crosses were examined for ploidy level, and 12 individuals were analyzed for their genome constitution through genomic in situ hybridization (GISH). In most cases the progenies from the triploid-diploid (3 x-2 x) crosses consisted of aneuploids. Further more, there was evidence for the formation of near-haploid (x=12+2) to triploid (3 x=36) gametes in the allotriploid BC(1) plant. The progenies of triploid-tetraploid (3 x-4 x) cross also consisted of mostly aneuploids but in this case the triploid female parent had contributed predominantly near-triploid (2n) gametes for the origin of BC(2) progenies. In South Africa, pollution of agricultural soils is on the increase primarily due to excessive application of fertilizers, sewage disposal and mining activities. This study was done to determine the effect of trace elements (Cu, Zn) and heavy metals (Cd, Pb, Hg) on germination and seedling development of Bowiea volubilis, Eucomis autumnalis and Merwilla natalensis. These medicinal plant species are highly recommended for cultivation in South Africa to reduce the pressure on wild populations. Copper and Zn at 1 mg L−1 significantly (p < 0.05) reduced the percentage germination of E. autumnalis. Low concentrations (≥1 mg L−1) of Cu and Zn negatively affected the roots of all three species. Mercury concentrations of 0.5 and 1 mg L−1 significantly (p < 0.05) decreased the percentage germination of B. volubilis and E. autumnalis respectively. Cadmium and Hg at 2 mg L−1 showed a detrimental effect on the root growth of B. volubilis. Concentrations of 0.5 mg L−1 of all heavy metals tested significantly (p < 0.05) decreased shoot length of M. natalensis.

Cancer is a major public health burden in both developed and developing countries. The quinone moiety has been shown to possess antitumor activity and several cancer drugs in clinical use contain this entity. The effect of isofuranonaphthoquinone isolated from Bulbine frutescens on Jurkat T cells was determined. Cells were exposed to the isofuranonaphthoquinone (IFNQ) at different concentrations. Significant antiproliferative effects were observed which were comparable to that of the anticancer drug 1,3-bis(2-chloroethyl)-1-nitrosourea (BCNU). A combination of IFNQ with BCNU produced synergistic effects which were observed after 72 hrs. It was also observed that combining IFNQ with reduced glutathione abolished the anticancer activity of the compound. It is, therefore, proposed that the isofuranonaphthoquinone may exert part of its effect by producing reactive oxygen species resulting in death of the cells as the effects of this compound were antagonized by reduced glutathione. In this paper, karyotype data of the tribe Lilieae in China were analyzed and been superimposed onto a phylogenetic framework constructed by the internal transcribed spacer to investigate the karyotype evolution. Ten parameters for analyzing karyotype asymmetry were assessed and karyotypic idiogram of five genera of Lilieae were illustrated. The results showed that, the relationship of genera in Lilieae that inferred from Maximum Parsimony criteria and Bayesian Inference were congruent with previous studies, which focused on higher level of Liliales. The karyotype showed distinctive among genera, mainly expressed on the location and amount of secondary constrictions and intercalary satellites: the genus Notholirion have neither of them, and the genera Cardiocrinum and Fritillaria have the secondary constriction alone; the genera Lilium and Nomocharis showed both features, and the distribute pattern of the intercalary satellites showed similarity among related clades. The asymmetry that assessed by several methods indicated that the evolution trend of Lilieae did not follow a single direction, but different in each genus. On the sectional level of the genus Lilium (including Nomocharis) the karyotype evolution included three major periods. Combining the chromosomal structure variations and karyotype asymmetry, the chromosome diversity and evolution in Lilieae were quite clear in the light of molecular inference.
