Medieval Funeral Rites

La Edad Media mantuvo la tradición, codificada perfectamente en la Antigüedad, de imbricar en los funerales celebrados en honor de las personas más destacadas de la sociedad un ritual privado, restringido a un ámbito familiar, con otro público dirigido al reconocimiento de la ciudadanía.
El protocolo empezaba con la preparación sacramental para el óbito y la liturgia de la extremaunción y continuaba con el tratamiento del cadáver con  su amortajamiento y la exposición pública del mismo. Concluido este proceso, una procesión fúnebre trasladaba al difunto a su lugar de inhumación. La esfera de lo privado o semi-privado adquiría una dimensión ciudadana de notable vistosidad que terminaba en el templo donde la celebración de la misa de exequias obligaba a la espectacularización del edificio y a su engalanamiento con catafalcos, tejidos, escudos y otras alhajas  litúrgicas.
Lo fúnebre, por tanto, extendió su escenografía a la esfera de lo doméstico, lo ciudadano y lo religioso. Calibrar la relación de estas prácticas, de carácter temporal y por tanto efímeras, con la iconografía desarrollada en los sepulcros y en los espacios fúnebres constituye uno de los hilos argumentales de esta ponencia con el convencimiento de que el universo artístico, en gran medida, actuó a modo de “símil fotográfico” de unos usos consuetudinarios claramente definidos. Para ello, en el presente texto hemos acudido a los textos de la época –tanto las Crónicas en su descripción de muertes reales como los textos poéticos en la evocación de defunciones imaginarias– y a las miniaturas, especialmente, a las que ilustran los llamados oficios de muertos de los Libros de Horas.

The Christianization of the population of Dobrudja was a long and quite difficult process. Of course, with adoption of the religion, funeral behavior underwent a significant change, coordinated by symbolism and by the teachings of Holly Scripture. Researchers` attention is still focused on aspects of specific Christian burial rites and rituals, namely the way in which the transition from the cremation to burial was made, the way in which a series of pagan funeral practices were taken over and the stages of the process of replacing ancient rituals with those of the new religions.
Overall, it is possible to make a man renounce his own beliefs in order to be integrated into society and in the sacred space, but you cannot make him forget his ethnic origin and the customs worn by generations, and so, some pagan customs have been metamorphosed into Christian rituals.

El reino de Valencia, como otros de la Corona de Aragón y del resto de la Península Ibérica, se mostró especialmente propicio al levantamiento de cruces de término; pero los pocos estudios académicos que les han prestado atención se han detenido en su aspecto estilístico, lo que ha llevado a no pocos investigadores a comparar estas cruces con las de orfebrería. Más allá de su decoración, sin embargo, sus respectivas tipologías iconográficas presentan sustanciales diferencias. La ubicación de las cruces de término, fuera del ámbito eclesiástico, su medio material y, sobre todo, su función, podrían haber determinado las diferencias iconográficas respecto a otras cruces y, por ende, las implicaciones teológicas de unas y otras. Aquellas formaban parte del ritual litúrgico de la Iglesia, mientras que estas formaban parte de la vida diaria de la comunidad y responden, por tanto, a la religiosidad popular más que a la religión oficial.

The kingdom of Valencia, other realms of the Crown of Aragon and the rest of the Iberian peninsula, proved to have a particular propensity for the erection of wayside crosses. The few academic studies that have paid attention to them have only taken into account their stylistic aspect, which has led a good few researchers to compare these works with goldsmiths´ crosses. But beyond the decoration, their subjects differ substantially. The location of the wayside crosses, outside the ecclesiastic area, their medium and especially their utility might have determined the iconographic differences with regard to other crosses and hence the theological implications of the different types of crosses. The processional crosses were part of the liturgical ritual of the Church, whereas the wayside crosses were part of the daily life of the community and they answer, therefore, to popular religiousity rather than to the official religion.

El texto elegíaco medieval, con frecuencia, secunda un modelo tipo conformado por cuatro partes: la presentación del acontecimiento, la lamentación, el panegírico y la consolación. La plasticidad visual de las palabras –escritas, leídas o recitadas− es comparable a la carga enunciativa y “textual” cualificadora de los monumentos tumulares a los que, remendando las palabras de Horacio, podríamos aplicar la definición de “palabras mudas”.
El aserto anterior resulta válido en las dos fórmulas de conmemoración luctuosa manifestadas en la Baja Edad Media: las ceremonias memoriales de carácter transitorio y los espacios fúnebres propiamente dichos. Textos elegiacos y eclécticas miniaturas, relacionadas básicamente con el oficio de difuntos de los libros de Horas, permiten la remembranza de las primeras que contemplan tanto la procesión mortuoria por las calles de la urbe como la celebración de misas con la utilización de catafalcos, textiles cobertores o elementos heráldicos que, de modo espectacular, teatralizaban el interior de los templos. El punto final de este protocolo, en buena medida, estaba definido por la concreción mental y material de las obras tumulares cuya semántica guarda una estrecha relación con los ritos de exequias.
Desde una óptica interpretativa, nos interesa la conjunción de todos estos elementos por varias razones – criterios de autoría, relación palabra e imagen y análisis semántico-. Este hilo conductor es el que hemos seguido a través del estudio de varios ejemplos artísticos castellanos tardogóticos cuyo eje direccionarl atiende bien a una casuística particular -elementos biográficos-, bien a un acontecimiento histórico -hecho colectivo-.

The paper analyzes the prayers for the salvation of souls that
were the basis for building a connection between the living and the
dead in the case of Kotor from the 13th to the beginning of the 16th
century. The inhabitants of medieval Kotor expressed their desire for
prayers in testament legacies, in the form of epigraphs on tombstones,
and inscriptions on the ktetorial churches. Also, prayers were found
engraved on reliquaries or inscribed under frescoes. In the first case, a
direct form of addressing the living was most often present in prayers
addressed to God and asking for the salvation of the souls of the dead.
In the second case ,inscriptions on reliquaries and frescoes, donors
appealed to God and the saints to remember them when Judgment
Day came, or to pray for them. However, even in these cases, prayers
for the living for the dead were not lacking since such legacies implied
memorial services and prayers for the salvation of the donors’s souls.
A common aspiration of those who wanted to secure prayers for the
salvation of their souls in one of the aforementioned ways was that
they lasted as long as possible, perhaps even “forever”.

In the article the Author is considering the correct translation of passage from the Tale of Past Years about events which took place after the death of Vladimir the Great in the year of 1015. He puts the question: How did the body of the deceased Vladimir removed from the chamber? In Authors opinion, A.A. Kotljarewskis hypothesis, in which body of Vladimir was not carried out through the door in accordance to old pagans custom, is baseless. It is however possible, that body was drained on the ground through opening , which was made in the floor of aboveground of the passage between two buildings.

The forms of the repesentation of the dead person which were employed in Poland in the Middle Age an the beginning of the 16th Century were not much different from the ceremonies which were held in the other countries in Europe.
The only ritual which was truly exceptional against the background of the Christian Europe was tke kiryśnik's fallin of the horse which was accompanied by his casting the dead man's sword, shield, helmet and a broken banner on the altar. This ritual fall, which was provided for in the ordo pompae funebris drawn of the occasion of the funeral of King Sigismund the Old (1548) seeems to orginate from the fact that the royal person was segregated from the State in accordance with the doctrine of the Crown od the Polish Kingdom and that the event itself was singular because it ended the diarchy.
