Menander

Traducción, introducción y notas al Discolo de Menandro de Atenas.
Menandro de Atenas es, después de Aristófanes, el comediógrafo griego más conocido de la Grecia antigua. No sólo tuvo éxito en vida ganando varios certámenes teatrales en Atenas,  sino que fue uno de los autores griegos más admirado durante la época del imperio romano, y es hoy en día el único de su época del cual sobreviven algunas comedias casi completas. Las noticias que se tienen sobre su vida son muy pocas. Sólo la Suda, el anónimo llamado sobre la comedia (perí komoidías) y algunos comentarios e inscripciones, nos dan pequeños datos no muy confiables. Según estos, el nacimiento de Menandro fue en el año 342/1 a.c. en el seno de una familia aristocrática ateniense. Un tío suyo, Alexis de Turios, fue uno de los más importantes representantes de la comedia media; de la relación con él se cree que Menandro inclinó su interés por la comedia. Se comenta que pudo haber asistido a clases en el Liceo Peripatético.
La acogida que tuvo Menandro por parte de sus contemporáneos fue muy poca, de más de cien comedias escritas solo obtuvo la victoria ocho veces. En su lugar, tuvieron más gloria sus rivales Filemón y Dífilo, pero que por el contrario la posteridad no reconoció. (Cf. ALSINA, José. La obra de Menandro. P.103)

The fragments of Alexis’ comedy Agonis or Hippiskos suggest a scenario based on a love intrigue: a young man is in love with a hetaira (presumably the title-heroine Agonis) but is impeded by a foreigner (a rival or a pimp); he therefore puts to practice a cunning scheme, which involves duping the obstructing character with a false display of wealth. The hippiskos, a kind of garment, probably functioned as a recognition token, leading to the discovery of the hetaira’s true parentage. The use of an item of clothing as a means of anagnorisis —instead of more standard objects, such as necklaces and jewels— was Alexis’ deliberate innovation, intended to breathe new life into the trite topos of recognition by tokens. Alexis drew attention to his innovation by naming his comedy after a garment, a virtually unique phenomenon in the Greek comic canon. A key scene of Agonis or Hippiskos may be illustrated on a calyx-krater of the Varrese Painter (Naples, 118333, ca. 340 B.C.), in which the main love triangle of Alexis’ scenario is shown on stage: the young lover eagerly brings the garment to the coquettish hetaira, while the elderly foreigner walks away in disappointment. No other South Italian vase showcases a piece of clothing offered in this way, and the uniqueness of the image matches the singularity of Alexis’ unconventional title. The elderly man’s figure in the vase-painting suggests that the foreigner of Alexis’ play was not a miles gloriosus but was either a pimp or a senex amator who antagonised the young lover for the hetaira’s favours. The Agonis or Hippiskos must have been produced in Magna Graecia soon after its original performance in Athens in the 340s. This was probably facilitated by Alexis’ South Italian connections. The vase-painting provides an interesting testimonium for the evolution of comic costume and footwear in the later phases of Middle Comedy. In combination with the textual fragments, it indicates Alexis’ skill in the representation of dramatic characters.
