We have studied a low energy building on a campus of the University of California. It has efficient heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, consisting of a dual-fan/dual-duct variable air volume (VAV) system. As a major building on the campus, it was included in two demand response (DR) events in the summers of 2008 and 2009. With chilled water supplied by thermal energy storage in the central plant, cooling fans played a critical role during DR events. In this paper, an EnergyPlus model of the building was developed and calibrated. We compared both whole-building and HVAC fan energy consumption with model predictions to understand why demand savings in 2009 were much lower than in 2008. We also used model simulations of the study building to assess pre-cooling, a strategy that has been shown to improve demand saving and thermal comfort in many types of building. This study indicates a properly calibrated EnergyPlus model can reasonably predict demand savings from...

Architecture, Modeling & Simulations (AMS) in conjunction with decision support technologies are crucial to ensure successful execution on the CBM+ vision. Currently, stove-pipe CBM+ enabled platforms compete for inadequate network resources creating risks for Global Combat Support System - Army (GCSS-A) network availability, creating the inability for CBM+ data to reach the Logistics Support Activity (LOGSA). The inability of server

In this paper, a dynamic model for Toyota Prius 2004 hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) is presented. The model is based on MATLAB Simulink HEV model which is modified in such a way that dynamic response of model can be verified by experimental results given in DOE reports for Toyota Prius 2004. The newly developed model can help the designers to

This work presents a top-down design methodology for a behavioral modeling System, based on smart sensors for aerospace structures monitoring, implemented on a MATLAB/Simulink environment. The modeled acquisition platform in this aeronautic health monitoring systems (AHMS) is built using the following specific sensors: humidity, pressure, temperature, stress and acceleration. For this application it has been implemented frequency acquisition techniques ensuring

In response to an incoming fire alarm, someone must decide how many and which engine and ladder companies (firefighters and their apparatus) to dispatch to the scene. Traditional dispatching policies assume that all of the designated companies are available at the time the alarm is received. These policies do not consider the workload imposed on firefighters, and do not work

A synthetic magnetogram code was developed to compute realistic ground magnetic field perturbations, based upon input from global MHD models, ring-current models, convection models and global coupled models. The code includes the effects of all large-scale current systems in the MI system and also computes the effects from the inner magnetosphere currents by integrating the Biot-Savart integral over a spherical grid centered on the Earth. A scalar potential representation is used for the magnetic field due to the currents in the outer magnetosphere and solar wind, and the effects of the ground induction currents (GIC) are also included with a scalar potential by including the effects of an infinitely conducting sphere below the surface. Aside from the code's ability to compute realistic magnetic field disturbances at individual magnetometers, it is possible to compile synthetic geomagnetic indices and synthetic global disturbance maps. The software is intended as a general-use tool and was built to be flexible so that it can be integrated with a wide variety of large-scale MI coupling models. The synthetic magnetogram model was built as post-processing software and has been parallelized using the message passing interface library. The inputs include: (a) ionospheric and magnetospheric currents (within an Earth-centered sphere of radius ~8 RE) and (b) the magnetic field on the surface of the same sphere, where the magnetic field effects of the ionospheric and GICs can safely be neglected. The radius of the sphere can be changed, as long as the sphere does not intersect with the Chapman-Ferraro (magnetopause) currents so that their relative effects can be separated from the other contributions. We will describe the model and show examples of the use of the code with a Rice Convection Model simulation of an idealized storm.

We present PARKAGENT, an agent-based, spatially explicit, model for parking in the city. PARKAGENT is based on the geosimulation approach, combining real-world GIS database with a multi-agent system. The model simulates the behavior of each driver in a spatially explicit environment and is able to capture the complex self-organizing dynamics of a large collective of parking agents within a non-homogeneous

Detailed and accurate emissions inventories are essential for reliable computer dispersion model simulation of the behavior of chemically and radiatively important atmospheric species. Currently, model simulations of the atmosphere are limited by the paucity of quality emissions data for input. As a first step in providing internationally recognized emissions inventories, we list here the inventories that are extant, together with

In spite of advanced therapies and the success of additional prevention programs, the HIV/AIDS epidemic still remains a challenge. Our paper refers academics, health care managers, and policy makers to the relevance of AIDS policy simulators in better decision-making. By highlighting the types of decisions AIDS policy models can support, we demonstrate the strategic role of AIDS policy simulators for
