Online Cataloguing

The article examines the fundamental principles of Resource Description and Access (RDA), the new guidelines for the description and the discovery of different kinds of resources aimed to replace the AACR2 since 2013. RDA is included in RDA Toolkit – a web site and a database containing tools and resources useful for the RDA application – which is here described in its contents and structure. The sections (attributes, relationships and appendices) are analysed in some points also through schematic tables translated in Italian. The paper examines the rules' structure and focuses on the use of numbered and unnumbered headings in RDA and in AACR former texts. RDA is analyzed as an entity/relationship data model and as a working tool for librarians too.

Il volume si propone di fornire un quadro complessivo delle Regole italiane di catalogazione – REICAT, elaborate dalla Commissione permanente per la revisione delle regole italiane di catalogazione, pubblicate nella versione a stampa nel 2009. Partendo da una breve introduzione sulla nascita dei codici nazionali catalografici, lo standard internazionale ISBD, i formati di scambio MARC e la Dichiarazione di principi di catalogazione internazionali, si arriva a delineare i presupposti e il contesto in cui le Regole sono state concepite. Vengono, quindi, illustrati la struttura e i contenuti del codice mettendone in luce le principali caratteristiche e gli elementi di novità nei confronti non solo delle precedenti norme catalografiche italiane (Regole italiane di catalogazione per autori), ma anche di una serie di usi e consuetudini, interni o meno all’ambiente del Servizio bibliotecario nazionale, consolidatisi nell’arco del trentennio che è intercorso tra la pubblicazione dei due testi. La parte finale del lavoro è dedicata allo stretto rapporto esistente tra le Regole e il modello sviluppato nei Functional requirements for bibliographic records. A chiudere il volume, un accenno alle nuove Resource description and access (RDA), uno dei fenomeni che meritano certamente attenzione, per portata e dimensione, al di fuori dell’area angloamericana, dinanzi al quale non bisogna però cadere in facili, quanto sterili, operazioni di (false) contrapposizioni rispetto alle norme italiane.

This course will enable students to acquire knowledge and skill on how to make catalogue cards to guide users in quick access to information. Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to report the survey on the use of online tools and techniques for cataloguing and classification in Nigerian libraries.

Design/methodology/approach – A questionnaire was designed to elicit information from librarians on pertinent areas relating to the use of online tools for processing library resources.

Findings – The results of the survey reveal a high level of awareness among librarians in Nigeria about the benefits that could be derived in the use of online tools for cataloguing and classification processes. The study further reveals the need for continuing education programmes for cataloguers for effective use of the tools. The study shows that the use of online tools has advantages over manual methods. Librarians perceived the method to be useful and easy to use. The paper reveals ICT infrastructural facilities as major constraints facing libraries in the use of online tools. One of the expectations at the onset of the follow-up study was that most of the problems identified with the use of the online tools in the Redeemer's University library study would not be different from the challenges facing other libraries. The results of this study have proved this to be true.

Practical implications – The conclusion rests on the need for an intensive continuing education programme to teach the skills required for online operations and the provision of web-driven facilities in Nigerian libraries.

Originality/value – The paper provides information on libraries' awareness on the use of online methods for processing library resources, their efficiency and attitude of librarians to such tools. The paper shows that libraries in developing countries like Nigeria should intensify efforts to close the gap between them and those in the developed countries in terms of ICT literacy.

Il tema del recupero del pregresso e le problematiche ad esso correlate sono stati poco rappresentati, nel corso dell'ultimo ventennio, all'interno della letteratura professionale italiana, se vogliamo escludere una serie di resoconti di attività poste in essere e concluse, alcuni atti di convegni o giornate di studio, e un certo numero di contributi di portata, in ogni caso e con poche eccezioni, limitata.
In questa sede, anticipando sin d'ora l'ipotesi che mi ha fatto da guida e cioè che in tema di retroconversione in Italia non si sia riflettuto abbastanza, vorrei provare ad indagare in che modo, quando e quanto l'argomento sia stato posto all'attenzione di bibliotecari, studiosi, teorici della biblioteconomia in Italia, proponendo, infine, un tentativo di orientare il lettore verso una riflessione intorno all'opportunità di predisporre e gestire un progetto di retroconversione nello stile della consapevolezza bibliotecaria.
Le riflessioni circa l'adozione di strategie di management, dell'uso di tecniche e di strumenti utili e indispensabili per razionalizzare i differenti aspetti della gestione della biblioteca, sono state introdotte e portate avanti in Italia in modo specifico da Giovanni Solimine, ed è ai suoi studi e ai suoi numerosi saggi che farò riferimento in vari luoghi del mio breve contributo.
Le riflessioni, invece, intorno alla necessità di procedere secondo la logica del lavoro per progetti, in questo come in altri ambiti della prassi biblioteconomica, sono state ampiamente condotte da Giovanni Di Domenico, ed è alla sua visione del lavoro per progetti che mi riallaccio in questa sede.

This thesis examines FtM (female to male) transgender YouTubers, their relationships with Internet platforms, with each other, with their bodies, and with mass media. Exploring content uploaded by trans YouTubers, as well as interviews with three YouTubers (Liam Rutz, Chase Ross and Charles Thomy), this thesis examines how the unprecedented modes of presenting and viewing the body through digital self-representation and online community legitimize trans identities. Topics of community, narrative, (self-)representation/archival, vernacular, binaries, accessibility, legitimization, the gendered body in cyberspace, and cyber/auto-ethnography are explored through ethnographic data as well as literature. Findings suggest that self-representational digital media makes trans bodies, identities, and life experiences accessible to both trans and cis individuals.

Interest in books, those complex entities that go beyond the value of the text and bear the marks of their own history, has grown and consolidated over the last three decades and opened up plentiful fields of  research that  have encompassed the area of bibliography and, finally, that of cataloguing practice too. Once the editorial stage of the publication has been completed, each item will encounter its own unique history that coincides with its encounter with the reader. Each single copy takes on an identity of its own within the bibliographic dimension of the library collection it becomes a part of, and at the same time bears a testimony to through specific bibliological marks. The testimonial value of the peritextual elements deposited in the books themselves, their survey, and the definition of uniform procedures for their description and indexation have been adopted in projects for the cataloguing of collections both by individual libraries and by national and international institutions. Taking up the principle of the ‘convergence of interests’ between the history of books and of libraries, and bearing in mind the results achieved in the study of the corpus of the Vaticani Latini codices 11266-11326, the Research team working on the Research project on the Inquiry of the Congregation into the Index of Forbidden Books (RICI: Ricerca sull’Inchiesta della Congregazione dell’Indice dei libri proibiti) decided to apply the methodology of the study of provenance but inverting the viewpoint of the research and proceeding from the notitiae librorum of the Vatican inventories to the items registered therein, rather than working backwards from the items to the collections from which they come. This outlook is congenial to the principles of the RICI, which, from the outset, adopted in its database "Le  biblioteche degli ordini regolari in Italia alla fine del secolo XVI" http://rici.vatlib.it/, the specific field ‘copy’ in the title grid in which to annotate the current collocation of the item under survey. The purpose of this paper is to illustrate the above research methodology.

L’interesse per il libro, entità complessa che sopravanza il valore del testo e porta su di sé i segni della sua storia, si è consolidato nell’ultimo trentennio e ha investito anche l’ambito bibliografico riversandosi da ultimo sulle pratiche catalografiche. Completata la fase editoriale della pubblicazione ogni esemplare va incontro a una vicenda singolare coincidente con la fase d’uso da parte dei lettori. La singola copia assume una propria identità all’interno della raccolta libraria di cui entra a far parte e ne diviene al tempo stesso testimone attraverso specifici segnali bibliologici. Il valore testimoniale degli elementi peritestuali depositati nei manufatti librari, il loro rilevamento, la loro descrizione e indicizzazione sono ormai fattori recepiti nei progetti nazionali e internazionali di catalogazione delle collezioni librarie. Assumendo il principio della «convergenza di interessi» tra storia del libro e storia delle biblioteche e facendo tesoro dei risultati raggiunti nello studio del corpus dei codici Vaticani latini 11266-11326, il Gruppo di lavoro del Progetto di Ricerca sull’Inchiesta della Congregazione dell’Indice dei libri proibiti (RICI) ha inteso applicare la metodologia di studio sulle provenienze operando, però, un rovesciamento della prospettiva d’indagine e procedendo non a ritroso dagli esemplari alle raccolte da cui provengono ma, viceversa, dalle 'notitiae librorum' degli inventari vaticani agli esemplari in essi registrati. Una prospettiva connaturata ai principi della RICI, che ha previsto sin dall’inizio nella sua banca dati, "Le biblioteche degli ordini regolari in Italia alla fine del secolo XVI" <http://rici.vatlib.it/>, lo specifico campo 'copia' nella maschera del titolo, nel quale annotare l’attuale collocazione dell’esemplare censito. Il contributo intende illustrare tale metodologia d’indagine.

This paper presents an overview of cataloguing and classification process for libraries and analyzes it from the point of view of digital libraries. A case study of Australian Islamic Library's cataloguing process is presented in line with discussions from literature review and key challenges faced by library's patrons. Library's cataloguing method provides ease, flexibility and productivity in assisting users easily find required resources while not becoming a burdon on library staff in terms of its establishment and maintenance. It also addresses most of the improvement opportunities identified by library staff and users.

This article aims to look out at role of FRBR in digital library system. Basically
FRBR is not a draft standard, but the new library model assigned some catalouging
rules and applications of FRBR in a digital system. Different authors have different
opinion, but we are trying to exhort that FRBR implemented in a prototype library
catalog and related user research during the design and implementation process

El objetivo este documento apunta a reflexionar en torno a la inserción y el impacto de las TIC en la docencia bibliotecológica virtual, así como también, abordar los retos y las tendencias que las tecnologías plantean para el proceso de enseñanza-aprendizaje en línea de la catalogación.
En este sentido, algunos retos y tendencias para la enseñanza en línea de la catalogación que se abordan en este documento apuntan a considerar cuatro aspectos: el primero acerca del
impacto de las tecnologías para la enseñanza de la catalogación; el segundo, aborda los retos que se les presentan a los tutores bibliotecólogos y a los estudiantes para la enseñanza en línea de dicha materia; la tercera parte se refiere a las estrategias para la enseñanza en línea; y finalmente, el cuarto apartado concierne a las tendencias teóricas para contenidos curriculares sobre catalogación.

L’avvento del digitale, così come la sua progressiva e capillare applicazione ai diversi campi del sapere, ha stimolato in seno alla comunità degli studiosi l’esigenza di ripensare i percorsi di valorizzazione delle diverse espressioni del patrimonio culturale e di concretizzarli in una maggiore accessibilità e in una più agevole fruizione, tramite la condivisione delle informazioni attraverso la rete Internet.
In seno a tale contesto si colloca l’esperienza del software Manus Online, nato grazie all’intensificarsi del dibattito professionale di studiosi e bibliotecari specializzati, con lo scopo di procedere al censimento dei manoscritti conservati presso le biblioteche e le istituzioni, sia pubbliche sia private, del territorio italiano: la struttura articolata ma al contempo duttile di questo software lo rende a tutti gli effetti un catalogo “aperto” o “dinamico”, in grado di restituire visibilità in tempo reale alla creazione e alla modifica delle schede catalografiche presenti al suo interno.
Questo contributo si propone di porre in evidenza i punti di forza dell’approccio catalografico di Manus Online e le modalità di descrizione del materiale manoscritto in esso adottate, nonché la versatilità del software nel disporre e nel valorizzare le informazioni immesse dal catalogatore; tale analisi non può prescindere dall’esame delle possibilità catalografiche, modulate sulle diverse tipologie di manoscritti e volte a porne in risalto le peculiarità strutturali e contenutistiche.

This manuscript, a collection of theological texts, from the Dominican Monastery of Basel, consists of various parts; it alone transmits the complete Latin translation of Fließenden Lichts der Gottheit by Mechthild of Magdeburg. The manuscript is remarkable not only because of its age (around or shortly before 1350), but also because of the numerous marginal notes, which reveal knowledge of the German version of the text, with which this copy of the Latin translation of Fließenden Lichts was being compared.

Diese aus mehreren Teilen zusammengesetzte theologische Sammelhandschrift aus dem Dominikanerkloster in Basel überliefert als einzige die vollständige lateinische Übersetzung des Fließenden Lichts der Gottheit Mechthilds von Magdeburg. Bemerkenswert ist diese Handschrift nicht nur wegen ihres Alters (um bzw. kurz vor 1350) sondern auch wegen der zahlreichen Marginalien, die die Kenntnis der deutschen Textversion erkennen lassen, mit der die vorliegende Abschrift der lateinischen Übersetzung des Fließenden Lichts offenbar verglichen wurde.

Ce manuscrit composé de plusieurs parties contient un recueil de textes théologiques et provient du Couvent des Dominicains de Bâle. Il est le seul à transmettre la traduction latine complète du Fließenden Lichts der Gottheit Mechthilds de Magdeburg. Ce manuscrit est important non seulement en raison de sa date (peu avant 1350), mais aussi en raison des nombreuse notes marginales qui laissent percevoir une connaissance directe de la version allemande du texte, avec laquelle la présente copie de la traduction latine du Fließenden Lichts fut apparemment comparée.

Questo manoscritto composto di varie parti, contenente una raccolta di testi a carattere teologico e proveniente dal convento dei domenicani di Basilea, è l’unico a trasmettere la traduzione latina completa del Fließenden Lichts der Gottheit di Mechthild di Magdeburgo. Questo manoscritto è importante non solo per la sua datazione (intorno o poco prima del 1350) ma per la presenza di numerose annotazioni marginali che lasciano intravedere una conoscenza diretta della versione tedesca del testo, con il quale evidentemente la presente versione della traduzione latina del Fließenden Lichts venne confrontata.

The paper continues a series of preliminary notes for the digital catalogue of collections brought by German ethnologist Albert Grubauer in 1911 from ex British North
Borneo (now state Sabah, Malaysia) and sold to the MAE in 1914. The author completes the work started by her predecessors in the museum on identification of two objects misrecognized when the collection was registered. Reconstructing museum biographies of the two tools for genital piercing, the author creates a textual model of digital publication in hope to show that a
properly organized digital infrastructure is able to facilitate not just museum records and exhibitions, but also research on museum collections. This experimental text is a collection of digital data objects: images of artifacts, fragments of documents and publications and their transcripts, commentaries of the researcher. The textual format makes the author put the objects in a certain rigid line, giving her at the same time possibility of metacommentary for her actions. An obvious limitation of digital publication of a museum collection is impossibility to digitize tactile qualities of an object which are so important for museum heuristics. Still, possibility to juxtapose images and excerpts from documents at the one surface of a digital page may significantly lower chances for identification failures and prompt to productive comparisons. With such a tool at hand, curator of a digitalized museum collection inevitably becomes also researcher.

Contributo para uma Bibliografia Cronológica da Literatura Monástica Feminina Portuguesa dos Séculos XVII e XVIII (impressos).
Esta bibliografia cronológica da literatura monástica feminina em Portugal, constitui de algum modo um contributo para uma visão de conjunto – ou apenas para uma suspeição – do que terá sido o quadro de produção literária empreendida na vida monástica feminina em Portugal, durante os séculos XVII e XVIII, registando e seguindo o seu percurso editorial e determinando o momento, às vezes bem mais tardio, da sua edição.

The objective of the Books of Hispanic Polyphony (BHP) website / database is to serve as a comprehensive research tool concerning manuscript and printed polyphonic books in Spain and books with hispanic polyphony elsewhere. BHP has no chronological limitations, and we have started to cover the period from the 15th through the 20th century. We do not provide images of the sources, unless the institutions that hold them do so through repositories or permission. In such cases, we incorporate the appropriate links; for instance, to the Biblioteca Digital Hispánica, for books at the Biblioteca Nacional de España in Madrid. We also incorporate links to manuscripts described in Digital Image Archive of Medieval Music (DIAMM), to printed books in Printed Sacred Music Database 1500-1800,  to Portuguese Early Music  (PEM) database, and to other appropriate websites that could offer relevant information. Our menu for “Sources”, “Locations”, “Institutions”, “Musicians”, “Genres”, “Works”, “Movements”, “Documents” and “Bibliography” should give you a sense of our objective, and we are still building searching tools and different ways to connect information.  We would like to serve as a reference tool and as a platform to present fresh, new research and foster international collaboration.

This web/database was initiated as part of the four-year (2013-2016) R+D Project “Libros de polifonía hispana (1450-1650): catálogo sistemático y contexto histórico-cultural” (HAR2012-33604) of the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness. Currently, BHP is part of the objectives of a new R+D Project “Hispanic Polyphony and Music of Oral Tradition in the Age of Digital Humanities” (HAR2016-75371-P, Spanish Ministry of Economy, Industry and Competitiveness, 2017-2020).

Automated cataloguing has greatly enhanced the search and retrieval operations of libraries. The online computerized catalogue popularly known as OPAC lets to search the terms of user's choice throughout the database of the holdings of a particular library. Users can make choice from a menu of different options through simple, advance, phrase searching, etc. in OPAC. In order to find out the use of search strategies in OPAC, the investigators have adopted survey method for present study. Under survey method, questionnaire and interview tools were used for collecting the necessary data. The present study reveals that a large number of users are using simple search and lesser number use advance searching. It is worthwhile to note that advance search facilities in OPAC enhance user's satisfaction by providing filtered, high recall and high precision results. Although, the results of present study reveal that there is no significant difference in using simple search in OPAC among the users of select libraries. Nevertheless, the users of select IITs have taken a clear cut lead in using the advance search facilities in OPAC than the users of Kashmir University. The findings of this study will help the select libraries to take appropriate steps in providing effective short term training course for the maximum utilization of advance search facilities in OPAC. In addition, it will also render a helping hand to other libraries to enhance the usage of OPAC.

This manuscript, written by the Benedictine Friedrich Kölner and meant for the Hermitage of St. George, contains, among others: a translation of the letters of Jan van Schoonhoven, which survive only in this manuscript; a sermon by Tauler (Vetter no. 70); and excerpts from Chapter 49 of the "Vita" by Henry Suso. In addition, it transmits several of the „Engelberger Predigten,“ thus completing the collection contained in Cod. Sang. 1004. It bears mentioning that both of these manuscripts are based on an earlier model, to which also the manuscripts Cod. Sang. 1919 and Wil M 42, which were created 50 years later, owe their (complementary) selection of „Engelberger Predigten.“ In the fold of the twelfth quire (set of sheets), there can be found remnants of a two-columned, rubricated German parchment manuscript from the first half/middle of the 13th century.

Diese vom Benediktiner Friedrich Kölner geschriebene und für die St. Georgenklause bestimmte Handschrift enthält u.a. eine unikal überlieferte Übersetzung der Briefe des Jan van Schoonhoven, die Tauler-Predigt Vetter Nr. 70 und Auszüge aus Kap. 49 der „Vita“ von Heinrich Seuse. Darüber hinaus überliefert sie einige der „Engelberger Predigten“, womit sie den Bestand von Cod. Sang. 1004 komplettiert. Bemerkenswerterweise gehen beide Handschriften auf eine Vorlage zurück, der auch die etwa 50 Jahre später entstandenen Handschriften Cod. Sang. 1919 und Wil M 42 ihre (wieder einmal komplementär angelegte) Auswahl der „Engelberger Predigten“ verdanken. Im Falz der 12. Lage findet man Reste einer zweispaltigen rubrizierten deutschen Pergamenthandschrift aus der ersten Hälfte/Mitte des 13. Jahrhunderts.

Ce manuscrit, écrit par le bénédictin Friedrich Kölner pour l’Hermitage Saint-Georges, contient, entre autre, l’unique traduction conservée de la lettre de Jan van Schoonhoven, un sermon de Tauler (Vetter Nr. 70 ) et des extraits du chapitre 49 de la „Vita“ de Henry Suso. De surcroît, il transmet quelques-uns des „Engelberger Predigten“, complétant ainsi le recueil contenu dans le Cod. Sang. 1004. Il faut remarquer à ce propos que les deux manuscrits remontent à un modèle auquel se réfèrent également, pour leur choix de „Engelberger Predigten", le Cod. Sang. 1919 et le Wil M 42 (également complémentaires dans ce cas), écrits environ 50 ans plus tard. L’onglet du fascicule 12 se compose de restes d’un manuscrit sur parchemin en allemand, sur deux colonnes et rubriqué, de la première moitié/de la moitié du XIIIe s.

Questo codice, scritto dal benedettino Friedrich Kölner e destinato all'eremitaggio di S. Giorgio, contiene tra l'altro una traduzione - tramandata unicamente in questo codice - della Lettera di Jan van Schoonhoven, una predica di Tauler (Vetter Nr. 70) ed estratti dal capitolo 49 della "Vita" di Enrico Susone. Tramanda inoltre alcune delle "Engelberger Predigten" completando in questo modo la raccolta contenuta nel Cod. Sang. 1004. Degno di nota il fatto che entrambi i manoscritti si rifacciano ad un modello al quale si orienteranno circa 50 anni dopo anche i mss. Cod. Sang. 1919 e Wil M 42 (anche in questo caso in modo complementare) per la loro scelta di "Engelberger Predigten". La brachetta del fascicolo 12 è costituita da resti di un manoscritto pergamenaceo tedesco su due colonne, rubricato, della prima metà/metà del XIII sec.

Bemerkenswert ist, dass beide Handschriften auf eine Vorlage zurückgehen, der auch die etwa 50 Jahre früher entstandenen Handschriften Cod. Il transmet en plus quelques-uns des „Engelberger Predigten“, de sorte qu’il complète le recueil contenu dans le Cod. Sang. 1919. Il faut remarquer à ce propos que les deux manuscrits remontent à un seul modèle auquel se référaient également, pour leur choix de "Engelberger Predigten", le Cod. Sang. 1004 et le Wil M 47 (également complémentaires dans ce cas), écrits 50 ans auparavant.

Il manoscritto contiene una versione finora sconosciuta della traduzione tedesca del De reparatione hominis, opera principale del francescano Marquardo di Lindau. Nel momento in cui si “aggredisce” una collezione storica, la situazione è complessa e delicata: il termine aggredire vuole significare che, nel caso la collezione sia stata soggetta a diverse manipolazioni, essa va smembrata e letteralmente ricostruita dalle fondamenta. Risulta rarissimo trovare collezioni risalenti ai secoli scorsi che non siano state soggette a rimaneggiamenti da parte di esperti del settore o di catalogatori improvvisati. Il Pinna, uno dei più grandi paleontologi del secolo scorso, nel 1976 scriveva che una raccolta o collezione naturalistica possiede un vero significato solo se si può ricostruire la storia di ciascun pezzo che la compone. È su questo principio che i canoni di catalogazione internazionale definiscono raccolte e non collezioni, raggruppamenti di beni naturalistici antichi non revisionati. Una raccolta potrà diventare collezione, ed anche un bene culturale, non solo nel caso in cui i suoi elementi risultino importanti o rari, ma anche quando i pezzi, se pur non eccezionali scientificamente, sono storicamente rintracciabili. Nel caso di collezioni antiche, la storia di un pezzo si aggiunge al numero di catalogazione, alla determinazione specifica e al luogo di provenienza riportati sulla targhetta e sull’etichetta, rendendo così il reperto unico ed importante. Nel caso di campioni biologici o di fossili, il percorso storico deve essere individuato anche per definire le fasi operative per la ricostruzione del catalogo e per interpretare i dati ottenuti. Un reperto del 1800, ad esempio, può appartenere ad una specie estinta o ad un fossile il cui giacimento originario oggi si è esaurito o ad un elemento mai determinato prima; inoltre, se la determinazione sbagliata dei reperti è dovuta ad un concetto scientifico obsoleto e poi revisionato, l’errore diventa un dato di notevole importanza storica. Il valore storico di una collezione aumenta in modo notevole se i pezzi analizzati si possono ricondurre esattamente ad un preciso ricercatore del passato.

This article aims to look out at role of FRBR in digital library system. Basically FRBR is not a draft standard, but the new library model assigned some catalouging rules and applications of FRBR in a digital system. Different authors have different opinion, but we are trying to exhort that FRBR implemented in a prototype library catalog and related user research during the design and implementation process

The article describes Manus Online, <http://manus.iccu.sbn.it/>, the census of the manuscripts held in libraries and other Italian institutions, both public and private. A short account of the history and aim of the Manus Online project, is followed by an outline of its technical characteristics, structure and innovative aspects compared to former versions. A more detailed description of the cataloguing system is provided with an example of data entry procedures. A section of the article is dedicated to the retrieval system in order to illustrate and explain all different features (library search, basic and advanced search), offering also some examples of queries. The outcomes of a survey addressed to a sample of libraries are discussed looking at the impact of Manus Online on librarians work and highlighting both positive and critical aspects that emerged from the librarians comments. A final account is provided both from a quantitative and qualitative point of view (147 participant libraries, 94.039 cataloguing records up to 31st May 2010), underlining the most relevant aspects of the Manus Online project and its possible developments.

Subject metadata, a controlled vocabulary, is considered as an important element in a bibliographic record to enhance the precision of information search results. Yet, the subject search is the most complicated searching task for end-users. However, the information scientists or institutions have endeavored to formulate language-specific subject headings according to their requirements, but due to lack of coordination among them, uniformity and consistency not sustained. This book uncovers the existing practice of assigning subject headings for Bengali documents to perform the subject search in online catalogs. Moreover, the suitability of subject headings for retrieval of resources has ascertained from the users' point of view. It also provides the framework compatible with international standards to accommodate the authority control in the multilingual systems. This book confirms that the principles and rules are a fundamental requirement for optimal use of subject headings in online catalogs. Thus the web-enabled subject authority control can be applied intelligently for the retrieval of knowledge resources.

The Neolithic graveyard site of BHS18, located in the Emirate of Sharjah (UAE) yielded nearly 500 human skeletons. The results of the osteological analyses, such as age and sex determinations and pathologies, as well as information on the burial types and the orientation of the graves as well as the available photographs are presented in this catalog. This data was collected in the years between 1996 and 2005. Later on, isotope values for Strontium, Oxygen and Carbon, obtained from tooth enamel of selected individuals from BHS18 and some comparative sites were added and are also listed in the catalog.

Se presenta la experiencia del Sistema de Bibliotecas de la Universidad Católica de Córdoba en relación a la catalogación remota del material con procedencia adquisiciones y colección “Biblioteca del Colegio Máximo de San Miguel” (BCMax), que empezó a realizarse desde la suspensión a partir del 20/03/2020 del trabajo presencial por el contexto de pandemia COVID-19 y en virtud de las disposiciones del Poder Ejecutivo Nacional. Se expone la importancia de la colección BCMax (San Miguel, Buenos Aires), con un acervo documental de más de 300 mil volúmenes de libros y 800 títulos de publicaciones periódicas especializadas,  y su traslado a Córdoba en el año 2017, tras 250 años de la expulsión de los jesuitas en el año 1767. Esta colección constituye un verdadero tesoro cultural, de valor patrimonial bibliográfico y documental, y es considerada una de las más importantes en su género de América Latina. Se presenta la transformación digital y la mejora continua de los procesos documentales, como consecuencia del trabajo remoto del personal bibliotecario y posterior trabajo híbrido con la implementación de la modalidad remota-presencial desde septiembre de 2020, en el marco del Sistema de Gestión de la Calidad bajo la norma ISO 9001:2015. Se desarrolla la implementación del servicio de catalogación cooperativa CatExpress (Cataloging Express) ofrecido por OCLC (Online Computer Library Center). Finalmente, se plantean las ventajas y desventajas de la experiencia de catalogación remota y la importancia de adaptar el trabajo del personal de procesos documentales al actual mundo Volátil, Incierto, Complejo y Ambiguo (V.I.C.A.).

The library provides its services to satisfy the user’s approach. This study is done to assess users’ attitudes towards the retrieval of the Bengali document in OPAC through subject headings. It also traces users’ perceptions regarding subject access highlighting the problems in the retrieval of Bengali documents by subject in OPACs. It can be inferred that some features are required to be incorporated to improve the functionality of the OPACs and thereby to satisfy users’ requirements. Results revealed that search experience using subject headings is not satisfactory. Keywords search rather performs better but due to redundancy of search, it is hard to retrieve required documents in the least possible time. It is also revealed that fewer perform known-item searches and their success rates for these searches are generally good. Thus, the findings demand standard principles and rules for the construction of Bengali Subject Headings. As per the need of new-age users, an efficient OPAC search facility can be developed where there will be a chance for ranking information retrieval.

Catalogues are one of the most important types or aspects of publications in archaeological research. Although often
more sophisticated regarding typology, methodology and contents, most publications of archaeological material still tend to
adhere to the technical layout shaped in scientific catalogues of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This neglects the possibilities
provided by technological developments of the last decades, especially by the evolution of online publishing. The object-oriented
database ARACHNE shows what is and what might be possible by publishing archaeological catalogues online. There are few restrictions
regarding the publication’s extent, illustrations, availability or further use – and a variety of possible enhancements such
as interactivity, contextualisation and digital methods of analysis.
Publishing archaeological material in web environments clearly offers many advantages over the traditional publication in
print. However, the latter is still absolutely predominant in archaeological work – but are there any substantial reasons for that?
Showing examples of catalogues published by the Rome department of the DAI, this paper demonstrates that online publications
are nothing to be afraid of. In fact, archaeologists should appreciate and make use of the gifts offered by the internet.
