Plants can develop novel adaptations for nutrient acquisition in nutrient-limited ecosystems. These adaptations include colonization by roots of tree trunks and logs that can act as nutrient reservoirs. Termites may facilitate this root colonization by digging tunnels and accelerating decomposition in logs and tree trunks. We measured the frequency with which above-ground tree root colonization co-occurs with the presence of termites or their tunnels inside living trees above 20 cm dbh (n = 178) and dead tree trunks and logs at least 15 cm in diameter (n = 146) in a Bornean tropical forest. Roots above the soil surface co-occur with termite tunnels 39% more frequently than expected by chance in trunks of living trees and 17% more frequently than expected by chance in logs. By categorizing logs according to hardness through ease of penetration, we found that softer logs at a late stage of decay did not show co-occurrence of termite activity and roots to the same extent as harder logs. This suggests that trees forage where termites have removed physical barriers to colonization. In this fashion, termites may accelerate nutrient cycling in tropical rain forests.

The aim of the Sape Karaang Sustainable Project; a short video product with a narrative that is inhibiting and supporting the sustainability of sape karaang, folklores, music and cultural heritage of the Dayak Bahau people, is to revitalize the musical culture of the Dayak Bahau tradition. This project combines the interest of Bahau youth generation in technology and the forms of conservation that parents of the Bahau culture want. Those who are benefitted by this project is Dayak Bahau community as well as Indonesia as a multicultural nation. The purpose of this paper is to discuss a practice-led approach used in empowering selected Bahau young people. This method is useful in providing guidance to researchers in finding realistic practices that actually bridges the gap between theory and practice during the project. This paper presents two significances: the practical approach and perceptibility in the decision-making process during a research project and the innovation to sustain indigenous traditional arts.

----- ABSTRACT: Borneo has so far remained marginal in studies on Southeast Asian peoples and tigers. While the tiger is not known to exist in Borneo today, it has a significant reality in historical traditions, oral literature, myths, beliefs, and rituals. This study combines various materials about Borneo, with a primary focus on its central regions, in order to, ultimately, try to shed light on ancient belief systems and the modalities of their evolution through time and cultural contact. It first surveys the local Felidae species, the names given to the tiger, and the presence of tiger body parts among villagers. Then, it reviews representations of the tiger in oral literature, its value as a symbol of martial manliness and, locally, its standing as a culture hero, and looks at religious beliefs, the tiger’s ambivalent nature, and its function as mediator between humans and spirits. Focusing on rituals, it then stresses its benevolence (initiation, redemption, purification), as well as its sinister facets (punishment for breach of taboos), both meant to warrant a ‘cool’ socio-cosmic balance. Next, it investigates the historical role of one chieftain named Tiger who, urging forest nomads to settle down and farm, was instrumental in the emergence of a new ethnocultural cluster’s identity, and it explores the modalities of the myth-generating conflation of historical elements with religious beliefs. Finally, it scrutinizes the tiger’s complex relationship with the moon and thunder, hinting at the pre-existence among former nomads of non-dualistic beliefs in a ‘tiger-moon-thunder’ set of deities and, touching briefly on the ‘thunder complex’ question, it stresses ambiguity and variability, reflecting the systemic cultural plasticity and singular cultural histories of these societies. 'Ibanic lects', speech varieties including Iban, Seberuang, Kantuk and Mualang, share a clear historical relationship. Yet the nature of that relationship is not always clear. How diverse is the Ibanic dialect network? What are the main 'mountains' and 'plains' in the linguistic topography: which named varieties are most distinct and which are most similar? Who understands whom? Which groups are able to communicate using their own lects, and which are forced to switch to a lingua franca to communicate? This paper examines the Ibanic dialect network from three perspectives: that of 'particle', 'wave' and 'field', and finds insightful but distinct descriptions of the network from all three perspectives.

1.0 PENGENALAN Bunga Rafflesia atau juga dikenali sebagai Bunga Pakma merupakan sejenis tumbuhan bunga yang bersaiz besar. Bunga Pakma spesis Rafflesia Arnoldii pula merupakan spesis bunga Rafflesia yang terbesar di dunia dengan saiznya yang mampu membesar sehingga 91 sentimeter atau berukuran (3 kaki) diameter, tebal kelopak bunga pula sekitar 1.9 sentimeter bersamaan (3/4 inci) serta beratnya yang kira-kira 7 kilogram. Bunga ini juga terdiri daripada beberapa spesis yang telah direkodkan. Antaranya ialah Rafflesia arnoldii Rafflesia cantleyi, Rafflesia gadutensis, Rafflesia hasseltii, Rafflesia keithii, Rafflesia kerrii, Rafflesia manillana, Rafflesia micropylora, Rafflesia pakma, Rafflesia pricei, Rafflesia rochussenii, Rafflesia schadenbergiana, Rafflesia speciose, Rafflesia tengku-adlinii dan Rafflesia tuan-mudae. Bunga Rafflesia yang pertama telah direkodkan oleh Sir Stamford Raffles dan Dr Joseph Arnold pada tahun 1816. Bunga Rafflesia spesis itu diberi nama Rafflesia Arnoldii bersempena dengan nama mereka yang menemukan spesis bunga tersebut. Bunga itu dijumpai di bandar Bengkulu (Bencoolen) di Sumatera, Indonesia. Bunga ini juga telah menjadi bunga rasmi di negara Indonesia dan juga negeri Sabah di Malaysia kerana bunga ini hanya terdapat di negeri di Borneo sahaja. Bunga ini juga secara rasminya turut menjadi ikon di kepulauan Borneo yang menjadikan negeri tersebut terkenal dengan flora dan faunanya yang pelbagai disamping kepelbagaian budaya dan masyarakat yang tinggal di sekitarnya. Jabatan Perhutanan Negeri Sabah juga telah mewujudkan Hutan Simpan Rafflesia yang meliputi kawasan seluas 356 ha daerah Tambunan, Sabah, Malaysia. Tempat tersebut telah ditubuhkan pada tahun 1984 oleh Jabatan Perhutanan Sabah bagi melindungi bunga Rafflesia yang terdapat di kawasan itu. Tempat ini juga telah menjadi Pusat Informasi Rafflesia. Selain itu, terdapat beberapa Kawasan yang dikenalpasti ditemukan bunga Rafflesia ini yang dijadikan Kawasan hutan simpan bagi menjaga habitat dan pertumbuhan bunga Rafflesia tersebut. Namun begitu, pada tahun 2012, tumbuhan parasit tersebut telah ditemui di Semenanjung Malaysia oleh seorang pekerja Perbadanan Taman Negeri Perak ketika menjalankan kerja-kerja rutin harian menyelia kawasan berkenaan. Bunga pakma atau Rafflesia iaitu bunga terbesar di dunia lazimnya ditemui mempunyai lima kelopak. Bagaimanapun, spesis hibrid betina fauna berkenaan ditemui memiliki 10 kelopak berdiameter 46 sentimeter di Sungai Gadong, Taman Negeri Royal Belum, Gerik, Perak. Menurut Pengurus Perbadanan Taman Negeri, Iylia Ainuddin, penemuan bunga itu yang dikenal pasti sebagai hasil daripada evolusi antara spesies R. azlanii dan R. cantleyi telah disahkan sebagai yang pertama di dunia. Penyelidikan ini bertujuan untuk mengilustrasikan struktur dan keratan rentas yang terdapat pada spesis bunga Rafflesia yang menjadikan tunbuhan ini unik serta berlainan daripada bunga-bunga yang terdapat di dunia ini. Selain itu, penyelidikan ini juga ingin memperkenalkan ciri-ciri unik yang terdapat pada fizikal bunga Rafflesia tersebut dan mengolah maklumat yang berbentuk penulisan kepada bentuk infografik yang disertakan dengan rajah yang membolehkan audien melihat struktur dan fizikal bunga Rafflesia dengan lebih effektif dan mudah. 2.0 LATAR BELAKANG KAJIAN Kajian ini akan memfokuskan kepada ciri-ciri yang terdapat pada bunga Rafflesia. Bunga Pakma yang pertama telah direkodkan oleh Sir Stamford Raffles dan Dr Joseph Arnold pada tahun 1816. Bunga Pakma spesis itu diberi nama Rafflesia Arnoldii bersempena dengan nama mereka yang menemukan spesis bunga tersebut. This chapter explores the appearance of early polities and development of complex societies between the tenth and mid-fourteenth centuries along the northwest coast of Borneo, a region encompassing present-day Sarawak, Brunei and Sabah. Archaeological data from this region provides evidence for the existence of a number of coastal or semi-coastal complex societies in the first decade of the second millennium CE on the northwest coast with the most significant in Brunei and the Limbang, Santubong and Gedong areas of Sarawak. The development of these early polities in this northwest region as well as in the island as a whole remains obscure, and it is fair to surmise that we know more about the prehistory of Borneo than its proto-historical period.

Practicing hygiene and sanitation play an important part in maintaining health. Health can be defines as
state of physical, mental and social wellbeing of an individual, and as a resource for living a full life. It refers to not only the
absence of disease, but the ability to recover bounce back from illness and other problems. Sanitation is the hygienic means of
promoting health through preventive of human contact with the hazards of wastes as well as the treatment and proper disposal of
waste. It makes the environment neat and clean and helps the people to prevent different diseases and be safe from harmful
components. Health and hygiene are therefore interrelated. The absence of hygiene and sanitation impairs health. In the
absence of proper sanitation and hygiene, there can be microbes or pathogens that can cause contamination of the food, which
may lead to different types of food borne illnesses. Hence, health and hygiene surveys are an important tool to measure a
population’s health status, behaviour, hygiene and risk factors in addition to evaluating quality of heath care of different socio
economic groups. By conducting surveys at frequent intervals, health and hygiene patterns can be spotted in various households
and these can be acted upon. This helps in building up newer strategies and targeted intervention with follow up evaluations for
general or targeted populations.

The paper tells the story of a set for genital piercing from Northeast Borneo that was brought by Albert Grubauer  from the expedition in 1911 and then split between the two European Museums: what is now Museum Fünf Kontinente  in München and St Petersburg Kunstkamera.

This volume brings together a unique group of case studies about several endangered forms of Indonesian art. The essays assess the effects on this artistic heritage of certain national and international phenomena , especially the primitive art market and various kinds of private and institutional collecting. Borneo used to conjure up images of lush tropical forest and bloodthirsty headhunters. During the last two decades, however, the island’s claims to fame have been linked to pervasive environmental concerns: Sarawak’s nomadic Penan groups set up road blockades to try and prevent logging companies from occupying and damaging their territories; and catastrophic forest fires, particularly in eastern Borneo, destroyed millions of hectares. More recently, with the lush forest already half gone and the ecological fad on the wane, the eruption of inter-ethnic violence in the west and south of the island has brought back images, broadcast worldwide this time, of bloodthirsty headhunters.
Comparable in size to Texas (or the combined United Kingdom and France), Borneo is the planet's third largest island. Lying on the Equator, it does possess stunning tropical rain forests, among many other natural resources, and a broad variety of traditional cultures, among which the Dayak have long been famous.
This volume traverses almost thirty years of acquaintance with and work on the great island of Borneo and its peoples. Curiously, this period spans the last true bouts of tribal headhunting, then still a ritual necessity, through to the recent massacres – “neo-headhunting” – that were both  statements of ethnic identity and claims for more political power and the control of the region’s economic wealth.
The essays collected here focus on a set of small tribal minorities living in one of the most remote corners of the Borneo hinterland, the Müller Mountains. Among these groups, the Aoheng, with whom the author spent a number of years, feature prominently. With a multidisciplinary approach, this volume examines various facets of these peoples’ lives and cultures, from their history, economic system, and relation to their natural environment, to their social organization, beliefs, rituals, and world views. Altogether, it offers a comprehensive picture of innermost Borneo's traditional life.
This volume includes some forty photographs documenting diverse aspects of past and present life in the Müller Mountains region. Beyond their strictly documentary value, these photographs help the reader form a better idea of the region and its people and feel more comfortable and familiar with them.
There is much more to Borneo than meets the eye in the present unassuming little book. The great island still keeps many of its secrets, as many regions have hardly been visited at all and numerous ethnic groups have never been surveyed, let alone studied. Hopefully, this book will trigger in its reader a longing to visit, travel, and perhaps more, in innermost Borneo.

THE AUTHOR

Bernard Sellato, born in 1951, graduated from the Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Géologie in Nancy, France, in 1973 and was sent immediately to Borneo as a field geologist, mapping the then yet uncharted far interior of the island. There he became acquainted with the Aoheng and other isolated Dayak groups. After a spell of several years in Saharan and sub-Saharan West Africa, he decided to return to the jungles of Borneo and spent two years with the Aoheng.

In 1982 he started work as a consultant to a petroleum company, resigning in 1985 to take a doctorate from the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales in Paris in 1987. He then worked as a consultant anthropologist to several major international foundations and environmental organizations. In 1992, he became a member of CNRS, the French National Science Research Center. He currently heads the Institute for Research on Southeast Asia (IRSEA) in Marseilles and edits the journal Moussons. Kewujudan pergerakan Persatuan Pelukis Sarawak bermula tahun 1946 oleh Kuching Art Club banyak memberi peluang kepada pengkarya seni Sarawak terutamanya di Kuching untuk member gambaran tersendiri interpretasi mereka terhadap bumi Sarawak yang indah dengan kepelbagaian flora dan fauna serta kebudayannya yang unik melalui medium yang baru . Apa yang dipersembahkah bukan sahaja mempersona orang awam dari golongan pekerja biasa yang jauh berbeza cara hidup dari orang kulit putih dan golongan bangsawan tempatan yang mendominasi masyarakat kelas atasan di Kuching, malah mampu mencuri perhatian orang luar, contohnya dari Singapura. Maka bermulalah pencarian atau lebih tepat lagi pengarapan identiti tempatan dalam perkembangan seni lukis tempatan yang belajar dari merangkak hingga berlari dalam arena seni lukis, sehebat Wenesday Art Group yang bermula di semenanjung Tanan Melayu. Kertas kerja ini secara terperinci akan mengupas topik ini bermula dengan bagaimana penggunan ciri ciri visual yang digunapakai oleh pengkarya tempatan dan seterusnay kaitannya dengan pengalaman visual yang membawa kepada pengupasan hasil hasil karya yang wujud dari zaman selapas Perang Dunia ke-Dua hinggalah era selepas kemerdekaan Sarawak dan Sabah ke dalam Malaysia. Hasil dari kajian diskriptif ini akan memperlihatkan apakah pilihan elemen visual yang diaplikasi dan adakah gambaran ini merupakan phenomena dari pengalaman pribadi pengkarya terhasil dari kehendak persekitaran yang mempengaruhi kehidupan sosial dan politik pada masa tersebut.

"Beyond the Java Sea" explores the traditional art of eight regions in the so-called outer islands: Nias, the Batak and the Lampung regions of Sumatra, Sulawesi (Celebes), Kalimantan, the Lesser Sundas (Nusa Tenggara), the South-east Moluccas, and Irian Jaya (West Irian). Relatively unknown in the West, the outer islands include all of Indonesia's islands except Java (including nearby Madura) and Bali, the better-known inner islands that border the Java sea.

Through the chapters of this book, the reader will travel from Nias in the far west to Irian Jaya in the east, encountering artworks that are exemplars of indigenous Indonesian aesthetics as well as masterpieces as defined by a Western collector's aesthetic. These works and the accompanying discussions will also introduce the peoples who produce them. Throughout this region, art links village life with the supernatural; it honors ancestors, cements alliances, affirms political power, social rank and kin relationships, and, of course, it simultaneously surrounds with beauty the peoples who create it. Yet each regional style presents topics and problems peculiar to it. The format of this presentation will allow readers to understand the similarity as well as the diversity, finding in the art of each region recurring themes and styles that reflect the closely related histories of the peoples and the similar purposes for which all Indonesians create art.

Pada pertengahan kedua abad ke-19, James Brooke di Sarawak dan British di Semenanjung Tanah Melayu tergamam dengan
orang yang bernama Sharip Mashor dan Syed Mashhor. Setelah membuat percubaan untuk menggulingkan James Brooke pada tahun 1859, Sharip Mashor  telah dibuang negeri ke Singapura dan kadangkala tinggal di Muar  dan di Melaka  untuk  beberapa ketika.  Hampir sepuluh tahun kemudian di Selangor nama Syed Mashhor kerap muncul semasa Perang Kelang (1867-1872).  Ramai sarjana, pelajar dan penulis akrab dengan sejarah Sarawak dan Semenanjung Tanah Melayu beranggapan bahawa dua nama ini sama ada Mashor atau Mashhor ialah nama untuk orang yang sama.  Bab ini cuba merungkaikan kekeliruan tentang identiti dua
orang ini untuk mencari penjelasan yang lebih mantap.

A native of Bruges (now part of Belgium), Jacques de Coutre was a gem trader who spent nearly a decade in Southeast Asia in the early 17th century. In addition to a substantial autobiography written in Spanish and preserved in the National Library of Spain in Madrid, he wrote a series of memorials to the united crown of Spain and Portugal that contain recommendations designed to reverse the decline in the fortunes of the Iberian powers in Southeast Asia, particularly against the backdrop of early Dutch political and commercial penetration into the region. Translated into English for the first time, these materials provide a valuable first-hand account of the bigger issues confronting the early colonial powers in Southeast Asia, and deep insights into the societies De Coutre encountered in the territory that today makes up Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and the Philippines.
