This study addresses the gap in knowledge regarding effective design practices for crowdmapping in participatory mapping, considering the diverse agendas, expectations, and needs of stakeholders. Through interviews and analysis of a crowdmapping project, we developed a roadmap and guidelines to inform the design process of a web-based crowdmapping tool. Unlike traditional approaches that focus on end-user evaluation, our paper explores the perspectives of facilitators and developers involved in the participatory process. By understanding their motivations and perceptions, we can plan and design user-friendly tools that meet the requirements of all stakeholders in participatory mapping.

The presentation completes an application of how mobile GIS applications make geography knowledge in everyday life and in special projects. Through them, users can have immediate access to geographic information from anywhere, adding a dimension of understanding of awareness about products and the environment around them. Mobile GIS applications are platforms that allow users to explore, analyze and share geographic information through mobile devices, such as smartphones and tablets. These applications are built based on geographic information systems and use Internet technologies to provide quick and easy access to maps and geographic data. The content of these applications may include interactive maps, location information, and interaction with geographic data. Users can browse geographic space, perform various analyses, and share geographic information with others from their mobile devices. This also brings a new dimension to everyday life, integrating geographic information into daily activities and making it a valuable tool for many different fields, including urbanism, environment, territorial development, and many others. In this paper, contents such improving mobility, suitable functionalities for mobile devices, information sharing, security and integrity, built-in functions, intuitiveness of usage, filtering, and analyses, using of social links, application development process, technologies and programming languages, mobile application design, as well as core technologies for developing and using of mobile GIS applications will be presented in conference presentation and described in full manuscript.

Neste artigo o foco recai sobre a apresentação de uma experiência de mapeamento participativo que tem oferecido elementos para uma cartografia social de parte do território da Serra da Capivara no Piauí. Esse mapeamento visa a promover uma reinterpretação da territorialidade local dos lugares de vivência cotidiana da comunidade que habita a zona de tal Parque Nacional. Este estudo se apoiará nas narrativas dos moradores e memórias da comunidade sobre a história desses lugares. Para tanto, teceu-se uma abordagem conceitual sobre mapeamento participativo e cartografia social desde os primeiros estudos realizados com comunidades. Em seguida apresentou-se as considerações preliminares do andamento do estudo de caso que teve como metodologia expedições ao território tradicional com membros da comunidade para registrar sua cultura material e simbólica.  

This paper explores the relationship between paid labour and unpaid users within the Zooniverse, a crowdsourced citizen science platform. The platform brings together a crowd of users to categorise data for use in scientific projects. It was initially established by a small group of academics for a single astronomy project, but has now grown into a multi-project platform that has engaged over 1.3 million users so far. The growth has introduced different dynamics to the platform as it has incorporated a greater number of scientists, developers, links with organisations, and funding arrangements—each bringing additional pressures and complications. The relationships between paid/professional and unpaid/citizen labour have become increasingly complicated with the rapid expansion of the Zooniverse. In Kenya, environmental degradation has occurred at an alarming rate in areas such as the Mau Forest, the home of the majority of the Ogiek people. Traditionally, the Ogiek are hunter-gatherers and have distinctive histories of interaction with the natural environment. But, they have been increasingly rendered homeless through appropriation of parts of the Mau Forest for other uses since the colonial periods. Mau Forest is located in the Rift Valley Province and straddles Kericho, Nakuru, Narok and Bomet districts. Over the years, the Ogiek have inhabited the Mau Forest with little impact on the environment. Socio-cultural dimensions and values in maritime spatial planning (MSP) are gaining momentum worldwide and especially in the European Union (EU), since it is acknowledged that they are the “missing layer” of maritime spatial plans (MSPlans). These values are partly explored through cultural ecosystem services (CES). Coastal and marine CES refer to the benefits that humans derive from the coastal and marine environments in recreational, artistic, spiritual, and educational terms. They reflect the ways in which coastal and marine ecosystems contribute to human well-being, cultural identity, and interactions with nature. The research question is how to map and assess coastal/marine ecosystem services and to integrate them in the MSPlans. Thus, this systematic review sheds light on methodological and technical issues with CES mapping and assessment and provides guidance on how to incorporate CES in MSP for future research. Publications dealing with the spatial aspects of CES were examined with an extra focus on participatory mapping approaches. Initially, 199 articles were identified, and 50 articles were ultimately eligible for the analysis. Papers were concentrated in the European Atlantic, whilst their scope was either local or regional. A large number of articles consider the contribution of CES to efficient marine management rather than to achieving an integrated and coordinated MSP. Social and mixed mapping approaches were met with the most often, especially participatory mapping approaches. Also, non-monetary valuation was prevailing, and a multitude of techniques, tools, and statistical software were used. In most of the cases, the distribution of values in relation to environmental, socio-economic, and demographic factors was examined. This article concludes that an effective integration of CES into MSP is crucial for creating prospects of a more sustainable and inclusive approach to coastal/marine planning and for the well-being of ecosystems and communities both currently and for future generations. This knowledge should become “property” of the maritime spatial planners.

The built environment health promotion has attracted notable attention across a wide spectrum of health-related research over the past decade. However, the results about the contextual effects on health and PA are highly heterogeneous. The discrepancies between the results can potentially be partly explained by the diverse use of different spatial units of analysis in assessing individuals' exposure to various environment characteristics. This study investigated whether different residential and activity space units of analysis yield distinct results regarding the association between the built environment and health. This chapter addresses PPGIS (Public Participation Geographic Information Systems), a participatory method through which the public can produce maps and spatial data that represent their perceptions of the urban space in question. Specifically, it analyzes the data collected from an experiment in Jaguarão, Brazil. The data represents the perceptions of a small group of inhabitants about the problems and potential of the city's urban area. The procedures include an exploratory analysis and data visualization in the form of maps that allow describing a variable's distribution and identifying patterns. Although branded as ‘obstructionists’ and major agents of ‘disease and filth’ by city authorities, food vendors remain the pivotal node in the local food system in most informal settlements; therefore, their interaction with the environment and infrastructure services, and challenges they face to keep the food safe to eat, requires further grounded exploration. Food vendors from informal settlements in Nairobi, Kenya, who are acting as mappers and change agents, are building multi-layered views of places through the deliberative process of knowledge coproduction by participatory sensing, which lead to opportunities and challenges to improve those places.

A compreensão geográfica que elaboramos da realidade considera que cada momento histórico dos processos de usos do território tem a marca de suas técnicas. O fenômeno técnico é apresentado frente às diferentes transformações vivenciadas em todos os lugares. Damos ênfase à compreensão do fenômeno técnico expresso nas dinâmicas funcionais do mundo do presente. Para a compreensão dos processos, identificamos o território usado como categoria analítica e encaramos a realidade como uma totalidade em movimento. Refletimos ainda sobre a difusão das ações e dos objetos técnicos, a qual não se dá de maneira uniforme ou homogênea, na constituição do meio técnico-científico-informacional.

The interplay between Geographical Information System (GIS) and Computer Science has continued to yield improved methods of carrying out many surveying-related activities. In the past, survey control points were stored in file systems and at the best in Database Management applications thereby leading to the limited usage of the survey control points since they are difficult to locate in the field. This study however, suggests another approach for the storage of these survey control points which makes them to be easily accessible and gives room for faster update and geo-visualization of the survey control points. This was achieved by means of web programming applications such as Node-JS, Leaflet Javascript Mapping API, MONGODB, HTML and CSS, integrating GIS into web technologies. This study reports the variation in safety perceptions of university students (N = 196 university students) on university campuses in South China, focusing on the risk of crime and traffic incidents. Using a public participation geographic information system, we explore potential links between students’ perceptions and campus characteristics. We conclude that environmental cues associated with the risk of crime victimisation (e.g. lack of natural surveillance) are more often linked to poorer safety perceptions than those linked to the risk of traffic conditions. Although half of the students declare feeling safe on campus, their perception varies by individual characteristics, frequency of use, and daily experiences. Inspections of campuses environments using a door-to-door perspective are advised when safety becomes an integral part of sustainability planning of universities worldwide.
