Pragmatism and Ethnography

This article contrasts two English solicitors' styles of file work and aims to spell out some of the styles' respective practical and ethical implications. What I call ‘elaborate style’ relates to the file as the primary means of casework, while the ‘minimalist style’ relates to the file in terms of a compulsory exercise. The contrasts in style are further explored by attempting a set of explanations for them. The paper seeks explanation by relating the styles to the respective cases filed, to gender differences in the legal profession, and to the professional habitus of either solicitor. In conclusion, the inquiry suggests an explanation involving the legal discourse served. There are good reasons for either style under certain pre-trial and trial procedures. To stick habitually to one style while moving towards another procedure may cause unwanted consequences.

Temporary ordination is a custom in Myanmar, and Burmese Buddhists
value most the ordination ceremonies for novice monks. Traditionally, this ceremony combines a non-Buddhist celebration with Buddhist practice to become a regularized form of a coming-of-age ritual. This research considers textual analysis and preliminary fieldwork, as well as Buddhist groups in contemporary Myanmar and Taiwan, in order to explore the form, function and meaning of Temporary ordination, along with the ways it manifests culture variability.
短期出家是緬甸的習俗，緬甸佛教徒最重視「沙彌出家典禮」。傳統上，它複合「非佛教」慶典與「佛教」修行而成為固定形式的成年禮。本研究以文獻與初步田野調查為研究材料，並以當代緬甸與臺灣的佛教團體為研究對象，藉此探討短期出家的形式、功能與意義，並顯示文化的變異性。

There is a widespread idea that in grounded theory (GT) research, the researcher has to delay the literature review until the end of the analysis to avoid contamination – a dictum that might turn educational researchers away from GT. Nevertheless, in this article the author (a) problematizes the dictum of delaying a literature review in classic grounded theory, (b) presents arguments for using extant literature in the substantive field within a constructivist grounded theory, and (c) suggests data sensitizing principles in using literature, which are: theoretical agnosticism, theoretical pluralism, theoretical sampling of literature, staying grounded, theoretical playfulness, memoing extant knowledge associations, and constant reflexivity.

The communication tells the story of the encounter with American pragmatism by some scholars of the French pragmatic sociology.

In urbanen Ballungsräumen treffen Bevölkerungsgruppen, Szenen und Milieus mit unterschiedlichen Praktiken und Wertvorstellungen aufeinander. Lokale Verhältnisse und Sicherheitslagen erscheinen unübersichtlich. Hier sieht sich die Polizei gefordert, mit kontinuierlicher Wissens-, Vertrauens- und Beziehungsarbeit Abhilfe zu schaffen. Neben ihrem Kerngeschäft, der Verfolgung von Straftaten und der Gefahrenabwehr, etabliert sie die Präventionsarbeit. Unterschiedliche Formen dieser spezifischen polizeilichen Arbeit inklusive ihrer weiteren praktischen Implikationen und Anforderungen werden in integrierten ethnografischen Fallstudien analysiert.

Este volume compila trabalhos de pesquisadores brasileiros e franceses apresentados durante o Colóquio Franco-Brasileiro sobre Riscos e Desastres, ocorrido em setembro de 2019, na Universidade Vila Velha (ES). Voltados a esta temática, os textos aqui presentes abordam os desafios práticos do cotidiano de atores governamentais e não governamentais diretamente e indiretamente afetados por experiências de riscos e desastres em diferentes locais e escalas. O grupo de autores promove leituras da sociedade de forma a nelas incluírem a relação desta com a natureza bem como a multidimensionalidade e a multiescalaridade típicas da complexidade de tal dinâmica.

"This anthropological study describes a specific form of mediation, as it is practiced in Ethiopia (Northeast Africa) by members of the Oromo and Amhara ethnic groups. It introduces elders as male household-heads in their advanced ages, who settle conflicts and arrange marriages for the members of the junior generations. There are not only 'easy' cases dealt with, which one might assume to be too 'unimportant' for state courts or other juridical institutions but also aggravated cases that may affect the wider group or that have inter-ethnic dimensions. The study uses specific case studies of marriage, bride abduction, physical injury and homicide for illustration. Within the book, reference is made to speech-act-theory and the 'new ethnographic' approach related to it. Both rhetoric strategies and non-verbal means of communication are discussed, such as postures, gestures, spatial arrangements, numerical symbolisms, or the deliberate use of certain kinds of dress and of material objects. Special attention is paid to the use of ritual in mediation procedures. The book brings to light significant regularities that are inherent to the different types of elders' proceedings. Peculiar elements and phases can be distinguished that re-occur in all types of processes analysed in the study. This cannot exclusively be explained by reference to 'process', as a general idea of people negotiating law. It moreover hints to the existence of a formal 'procedure', which follows its own rules. Accordingly, a change of perspective 'from process to procedure' is suggested in the book's programmatic title.

In this paper I will first reconstruct a Deweyan model of social ontology, based on the process of habituation. Habit ontology leads to a social philosophy which is not merely descriptive, since it implies a critical re-description of the social world. I will argue that a habit-modeled social ontology is critical insofar as it includes an account of social transformation and of the inevitability of social conflict. Such an understanding is based on a diagnosis of social pathologies of our life form, and includes an account of the experience of domination, which is described as a matter of an imbalance of recognition which embodies subjugating patterns, and is seen from the critical perspective of freedom understood as emancipation from oppression. This leads to a reconstruction of the genesis of critical attitudes from life’s processes of habituation, which leads to an extended naturalist account of social authority.

Cette recherche, menée par Coline Sénac (UQAM), Nicolas Bencherki (TÉLUQ) et Consuelo Vásquez (UQAM), consiste à cartographier les pratiques du bénévolat dans la région de Montréal et des alentours. L’étude a permis d’analyser le positionnement des acteurs impliqués dans les réseaux de bénévolat montréalais.

L’objectif de cette étude est de proposer une vue d’ensemble des pratiques de bénévolat à partir des motivations, des intérêts et des valeurs des acteurs issus des milieux où se pratique le bénévolat dans la région du Grand Montréal et des alentours.

Financée par le Conseil de Recherche en Sciences Humaines du Canada, cette étude s'inscrit dans le cadre de la recherche sur les enjeux de la marchandisation du secteur bénévole menée par l'équipe de Bénévolat en mouvement (Volunteering on the move) au sein du Groupe de Recherche en Communication Organisationnelle à l'Université du Québec à Montréal (RECOR-UQAM).

« À l’origine de cet ouvrage collectif (paru en 2013 bien que daté de 2012) qui s’intéresse aux legs et à l’actualité d’Erving Goffman se trouve un colloque international sur « Goffman et l’ordre de l’interaction », co-organisé en 2009 par les deux directeurs de cet ouvrage et par Sandra Laugier. Néanmoins, il ne s’agit pas à proprement parler de simples actes des journées d’étude : plusieurs intervenants ne s’y retrouvent pas et, surtout, de nouvelles contributions y sont ajoutées. À des textes issus de ce colloque s’ajoutent à la fois de nouvelles contributions, des traductions d’un texte et d’une intervention orale de Goffman, et des écrits majeurs de commentateurs de ses travaux. Si de nombreux ouvrages de langue française – collectifs ou non – éclairent déjà l’œuvre de Goffman, ses différents moments, ses différentes directions et ses nombreux apports à la sociologie, cette entreprise collective a le mérite d’approfondir encore la réflexion. Il s’agit ici de s’intéresser plus particulièrement à « l’ordre de l’interaction » qui a pu être négligé par le passé bien qu’il soit pourtant central dans les travaux de Goffman, lequel l’a abordé tout au long de ses textes et sous toutes ses coutures. S’il a traité des interactions en profondeur, il l’a fait cependant d’une façon bien à lui, qui le distingue fortement de l’interactionnisme symbolique (voir p. 279-283 les « lignes de démarcation » relevées par Céline Bonicco-Donato), auquel il est encore à tort souvent rattaché, ou d’une microsociologie à laquelle il est régulièrement réduit. »

Nous souhaitons interroger la pertinence des notions de compétences et de capacités
comme concepts critiques pragmatistes opératoires face aux nouveaux processus de
domination, notamment ceux exercés par les institutions. Pour ce faire, nous nous
appuyons dans ce texte sur l’expérience croisée d’un conseil de quartier et d’une accession sociale à la propriété à gestion coopérative. La démocratie participative exige des capacités spécifiques qui sont en effet perturbées par cette expérience coopérative dont le rapport à la décision repose sur le faire et la dimension capacitaire sur les prises élaborées à cet effet. Il s’agit donc moins pour les accédants concernés d’obtenir une reconnaissance publique de capacités pouvant conduire à un accès à la décision, que de construire de manière coopérative des prises d’émancipation critique vis-à-vis de ces dispositifs participatifs. Ce passage d’une compétence participative à une émancipation coopérative permet à la fois de surmonter l’instrumentalisation capacitaire et de mieux travailler l’articulation entre la constitution des prises et la portée critique des processus
d’émancipation.

The discovery of a rock art site in 2008 by an amateur archaeologist spurred a wave of public interest in archaeology in Maragatería, Spain. As new discoveries took place, alternative archaeological discourses thrived facing the inaction of institutional and academic archaeologists. A long-term study of Maragatería carried out by the author serves to explore the construction of archaeological epistemic authority in a context where various social actors compete for dominance. Gieryn's notion of 'boundary-work' serves to analyse the different strategies employed by academic and institutional archaeologists, amateurs and pseudoarchaeologists to build epistemic authority. This article draws on Latour's affirmation that the legitimisation of scientific objectivity should rely on 'trust' rather than on 'certainty'. Ethnographic research showed that the more archaeologists attempted to legitimise their authority by reclaiming certainty, the more pseudoarchaeology proliferated. In contrast, the work of amateurs restrained the growth of pseudoarchaeology by creating networks of trust.

Dès lors, contrairement à l’adage sociologique, qui veut que toute mobilité spatiale implique une mobilité sociale, aller d’un de ces lieux à l’autre conduit le plus souvent à rencontrer des similitudes de démarche, de points de vue, de valeurs, les mêmes fonctionnements, les mêmes ambiances, les mêmes problématiques artistiques.

Rural social movements fighting for agrarian reform have been among the most organized and combative collective actors in Brazil for the last few decades. From 2003 onwards, some of their activists have reached positions of power within the state, which is now ruled by the Workers’ Party, a long-time ally. Drawing on ethnographical research on the state agency responsible for implementing agrarian reform in Brazil, I analyze the challenges faced by activists working as bureaucrats through the description of two of the most important public disputes in which they have taken part in their daily work. These disputes are key to understanding the relation between social movements and the state in the context of the Workers’ Party.

The State, the market, and labour relations have been completely overestimated as a modus operandii of unchangeable stasis by the Neopragmatists. In their eagerness to accommodate to the overwhelming universalisation of the market as a metaphor for all kinds of interactions and communication, between individuals, between institutions, between classes, between peoples, between humanity and nature, Neopragmatists have forgotten the turn of the century philosophical critique of conventionality for which Pragmatism was once famous. It is true that the depth and breadth of surveillance, normalisation, and categorisation that is occurring under globalised neoliberalism is of overwhelming consequence. Yet philosophers have discussed for over a century the limits of categorical truth, the inevitability of exceeding all universalities, and the many and myriad complicating factors that disturb simple equations of cause and effect. These philosophical cautions need not be disposed of because of the strength of neoliberal confidence and the familiarity of the progressive unrolling of the machinery of industrial consumerism. Understanding these prevailing conditions as fully as possible is vital, but remaining caught in the neoliberal rubric is not only unnecessary, it is short-sighted and detrimental to both the environment and humanity.
