Research project management

This book uses sports as a metaphor for research methods. It focuses on how to use and build frameworks for empirical research. The frameworks are analogous to a "play", which is connected to a unique purpose and directs the movement of players during the game. Examples from award winning student research support the chapters that introduce 4 different conceptual frameworks. Before a player can enter the game, he or she should be in shape and understand the rules. Effective teams have systems in place that help their players achieve top physical abilities. Likewise, student scholars need systems in place to ensure they have the necessary skills and preparation to conceptualize and write a strong paper. To do this, it is helpful to bring project management skills to the task of writing a paper. A project management system organizing a scholar's time, materials and Ideas is presented. The book is written using John Dewey and Charles Sanders Pierce's philosophy of science and theory of inquiry.

De enero a diciembre del 2004, desde los proyectos del CEPROS se fomentó, proactivamente, a través de capacitación EN EL TRABAJO, el desarrollo de competencias para la recolección, procesamiento, análisis y exposición de información en ciencias sociales.  Al finalizar el año, se procedió a certificar estas competencias.  El documento muestra diferentes modelos de informar sobre ello, por escrito.

L'Outaouais, tout comme la plupart des régions du Québec, possède un territoire public vaste et riche qui a beaucoup à offrir en termes de récréotourisme en milieu naturel. Ce ne sont pas les projets qui manquent. D'ailleurs, c'est plutôt ce foisonnement d'idées et de projets qui, paradoxalement, pose problème. Quelle direction emprunter, que prioriser, comment dynamiser et supporter?

La Commission régionale sur les ressources naturelles et le territoire public de l'Outaouais (CRRNTO) a invité notre groupe de recherche à établir un portrait d'ensemble des projets de développement récréotouristiques qui ont été élaborés au cours des années et impliquant le territoire couvert par la Conférence régionale des élus de l'Outaouais (CRÉO). La finalité de cette recherche n'était pas de choisir entre les projets, mais plutôt d'aider à la prise de décision à savoir identifier les conditions qui assurent une bonne fin aux projets récréotouristiques en milieu naturel.

This Impact Report identifies and summarises the diverse impacts, resulting from the £500m of UK funding of Science and Technology in 2013, using numerous quantitative metrics and short case study extracts.  It shows how the varied impacts of a national science and technology organization and its many funded programmes can be annually identified, captured, tracked, and summarised in a public document.

The report was produced for, and by, the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) -  the UK Research Council responsible for funding: (1) all UK astronomy, particle and nuclear physics research, (2) related UK science and technology facilities (e.g. as Harwell and Daresbury), (3) the UK contribution to international science (e.g. CERN, international telescopes and space missions), (4) innovation and business spin-off programmes, and (5) UK public engagement activities.

The Report was co-researched and co-authored by the STFC Impact Team, including myself while Impact Evaluation Manager in 2013, with Dr. Claire Dougan-McCallie (lead author/Head of Impact) and Jenny Beard, with additional input from senior managers, and many data and case study contributions from other key managers across STFC.

Varied key impacts are identified and reported including:

• Research amongst the best (by citation impact) in astronomy, nuclear and particle physics.
• Supported research of 226 Principal Investigators in 70 universities, led to 1,100 peer-reviewed papers in 2012.
• Facilities (the Diamond Light Source, ISIS and CLF) were used in 2012/13 by over 4,200 unique users , in over 2,400 experiments, producing over 1,000 papers in peer-reviewed journals.

• Technology from CERN benefited the UK economy by over £100 billion every year.
• Funding the development of the UK’s space, internet and computer animation industries, returned over £500 billion to the UK economy per annum.
• Funded Innovation Campuses hosted over 230 enterprises and supported over 5,000 jobs.
• UK industry won £43 million in contracts from the international subscriptions funded, and had accumulated a total of £150 million since 2005.

• Funded research inspired future generations to study STEM subjects, attracting 90% of UK undergraduates to study physics, funded 782 PhD students  and 16,800 student training days.
• Between 2009 to 2012 public engagement programmes engaged people on 58 million occasions, with 2 million people engaged in face-to-face activities in 2013 alone.

This paper describes the methodology and results obtained after productivity improvement work conducted on two consecutive building construction jobs.  The first one was used to evaluate production rates and productivity, current construction methods, potentials and lacks of construction equipment, current construction planning methodology, and existing tools to asses productivity.  These are briefly discussed in this paper. The second job was preplanned based on the experience and detailed documentation obtained in the first one. Work was conducted in order to “design” construction methods in detail, develop a detailed production planning based on the construction methods developed, select crew components and select their specific tasks, and design communication and control tools. Although the second job’s schedule and budget were originally calculated using standard methods (i.e. historical production rates), new schedule and budget were calculated based on the preplanning effort. Construction performance was measured against these values.

How is going to be professionalism for RMAs in a post-pandemic era?  Which skills are expected to be in demand? Following these questions, this presentation aims to define what professionalism for today’s RMAs is – consisting of qualifications, associations, and professional frameworks, among others – but, above all, what we could expect this professionalism to be – with its set of skills and expectations - in a post-pandemic future.
For the reasons set above, research managers (RMAs) could be expected to reshuffle their skills and re-invent themselves, not only to cope with an era where even professional knowledge has a limited lifespan, which was already something to expect, according to Barnett (2008); but also to create a new idea of professionalism and up-to-date skills for the times lying ahead.
The presentation is meant to be theoretical, with an empirical part describing cases of skills we could expect to acquire or need. It moves from the search of a definition of RMA to explain the move from administration to management; from here, what skills we can expect to seek in the current age and in an early future. Thus, a variety of sources on skills in HE and other sectors have been considered and compared; and it comes up that the core skills in a post-pandemic age are primarily the soft ones.
Overall, the core message for RMAs is to 'go wider' and focus beyond the field of practice of RMA, so on related fields of HE more broadly and HEM. But also to look at other professional groups and associations since their perspective could strengthen their understanding of themselves, their community, and their profession in today's HE.

Nigerian women constitute about half of the population of the country and are known to play vital roles as mother, producer, time manager, community organizer, social and political activist. But despite the major roles they play and their population, the society has not given recognition to these and to the fact that they are discriminated against. There are several factors that affect women’s participation in Nigeria. These include cultural and religious factors, low level of education, lack of political orientation, male dominance and the likes. It is noteworthy that in spite of the challenges highlighted above, the trend on women participation has been very remarkable there also seems to be a palpable fear that if women were to become dominant in the political sphere, gender relations will be ruined, thereby posing a threat to national stability.
The general objective of this study was to examine the role of women in the political process. No doubt, there are several countries in which women are either their presidents of equivalents. These include, Liberia, Germany, Argentina, to mention just a few. The study found out that the use of thugs (61%), lack of clear policy for women political ambition (57%), lack of adequate recognition for women in position of authority (59%) and religion barrier (58%) are some of the factors militating against women’s participation in politics. Results further revealed that women’s lack of adequate education/training (55.7%) is another major challenge to women’s political aspirations. Results also revealed that women are marginalized and feature minimally in government because Nigeria lacks a legislative framework that secures quotas for women in political parties.
Patriarchal attitudes, religion and lack of clear policy were found to militate against women’s participation in politics and governance. To overcome these problems, the study recommended amongst others, the development of electoral reforms that promote equitable representation of women and respect for due process. Empowerment of women by ensuring their access to credit facilities was proffered. The study concluded that the institutionalization of varieties of special mechanisms is most needed in increasing women’s participation in governance. Also, women should be enlightened by the official of the National orientation agency as well as through sustained publicity by political parties so as to increase their political awareness. The federal should make it mandatory that certain public offices be allotted to women on equal basis. This will dissolve any form of discrimination of women by men. Money politics should be discouraged in Nigeria while women who want to take active part in politics be encouraged to do so without any fear or favor.

Cowpea is an erect to sub-erect, or prostrate, climbing, glabrous, annual herb. The stems are somewhat square and ripped, often with violent nodes (Ton and Koop, 2008). It belongs to the family Fabaceae, it is one of the most ancient crops known to man. Cowpea is botanically known as Vigna unguiculata L., (Walp.) which in older references may be identified as Vigna sinensis (L.)(James, 1999). It is widely grown in Africa (with Nigeria and Niger Republic predominating), Brazil, West Indies, India, United States, Burma, Sri Lanka, Yugoslavia and Australia. Higher Education is under attack following a period of transformation and identity crisis; staff in the sector is not exempt from this crucial juncture which, following Barnett, involves re-setting a discourse as modern professionals in an age of super complexity where even knowledge has a limited lifespan. 
Research managers are one of the groups making the professional workforce in this sector and the one under the lens here. This group consists of a good number of hybrid professionals, but they also those professionals who have been building their body of academic and professional literature up constantly.
This paper aims, therefore, to provide an overview of their associations, professional development frameworks and qualifications to show what it has been done to boost these professionals. Their level of overall professionalism appears to be high and widespread, but there is much more lying beyond that. For example, they reflect on the practice, share their reflections in papers and groups of peers, and they carry out research into the practice to be the ones who know and share their knowledge.
To show their level of professionalism, we move from the overview provided by a national report mapping all the professional associations and qualifications globally; before focussing on an example developed in South Africa that clearly shows how much in-depth their understanding of themselves and their competencies have gone.
The paper suggests that associations move toward higher, updated levels of professionalism for their members; and that they do that even by carrying out their research into the practice to cope with the even more complex scenarios to come.

The power of digital marketing allows geophysical barriers to disappear making all consumers and businesses on earth potential customers and suppliers. It is known for its ability to allow business to communicate and form a transaction anywhere and anytime.

The study identified the factors affecting cost of construction project in Nigeria, their effects and suggested how cost can be minimized. It is a cross–sectional survey of 51 stakeholders (clients, consultants and contractors) in construction related establishments selected using convenient-snowball sampling method out of which 43 of the questionnaires were used to arrive at the findings. It was predicted that there is no significant relationship between the perceptions of the three stakeholders on the importance of factors affecting construction projects cost in Nigeria. There is a general relationship between the perceptions of clients, consultants and contractors on the importance of factors affecting cost of construction projects. The five most important factors are cost of material, economic instability, additional work, poor financial control on site, wrong/inaccurate method of estimation and poor project management while three most important effects are project abandonment, liability of companies or firms due to bad debt or bankruptcy, bad reputation and inability to secure project finance. Since cost is important to project success, the consultants (project manager) must ensure proper cost control, allow sufficient time for feasibility studies, design, planning and tender submission and use proper/realistic project costing and financing.

Community led local development and community driven development played
a mandatory role in rural development of both developed and under developed countries.
The paper explores the relationship between community empowerment, sense of community
and sustainability of community-driven projects. Looking at the record of social
well at gross root level, very less attention was paid on development of deprived communities.
Starting from the experience of community-driven organizations (i.e. the Citizen
Community Boards in Pakistan), the paper attempts to answer two questions: (1) is there a
relationship between community empowerment and project sustainability; and (2) is this
relationship between community empowerment and project sustainability mitigated by the
sense of community? Further, the paper elaborates on the concepts of ‘‘community
empowerment’’, ‘‘sustainability’’ and ‘‘sense of community’’. A hierarchical regression
analysis is used to test the relationship between community empowerment and sustainability
of community-driven projects. This analysis highlights the central role of the sense
of community in mitigating the relationship between community empowerment and sustainability.
Community empowerment is significantly related to the sense of community.
These relationships between sense of community, community empowerment and sustainability
of community-driven projects are applicable to empowerment theory and
measurement.

ABSTRACT:
The 2019 Presidential Election is one of the most keenly and closely contested in the history of Nigerian Presidential Elections since the colonial and post-independence period. The election was heralded with tensions, accusations and counter-accusations, intense campaign, trade of blames by the ruling and major opposition parties and other related issues. This study examined the process of the conduct of the 2019 Presidential Election, the outcome and analysis of the voting pattern and its implications. The work adopted both primary and secondary sources of data. The primary source is the direct participant observation where the author was part of the process of the election as a collation officer for the Presidential Election in one of the local governments in Nigeria. The research also observed directly on a live broadcast the presentation of the results by the state returning officers where the results were collected and used for analysis. The secondary sources include the use of books, journals and internet sources. The data obtained was presented in a thematic form using tables and statistical interpretations. The research discovered that the outcome of the 2019 General Election continued to reflect the voting pattern in Nigeria where ethno-religious and regional affiliations determine how the electorates choose their President even though, the two major contenders this time emerged from the same region unlike the previous situations. The research recommends that there is a need for massive enlightenment among the electorates towards choice of leaders based on performance and not sentiments.

ABSTRACT
The Principle objective of this project was to establish the major causes of delays in projects implementation in the construction industry in Kenya. The study delimited itself my limiting the scope into the roads maintained /constructed by the KeNHA in the coast region of Kenya. This was deeply looked at by taking into account four major objectives that included: to establish the extent to which construction project financing influence the delay of construction projects in the road sector, to investigate the extent to which construction project planning influence the delay of construction projects in the road sector, to find out the extent to which contractor’s experience influences the delay of construction projects in the road sector, and ,to investigate the extent to which supervision of work influences the delay of construction projects in the road sector. The study employed a survey research design, since it was an in depth investigation of an individual group of respondents. The questioners were used as the main source of gathering information from selected 55 respondents that cut a cross categories like constrictors, surveyors, engineers and many more. These questionnaires were emailed to some respondents; others were dropped and picked later while some were administered by research assistants. Questionnaires were sorted out, data keyed in into the SPSS for analysis. This information then was presented by use of frequency tables. From the hypothesis testing using the Chi-Square, the calculated Chi-Square values were found to be greater than the critical value of 9.488 thus the alternative hypotheses were adopted in all the four cases as per the objectives. Recommendations for further studies have been included in the last chapter (chapter five).

This paper extends the research proposal of assignment 1 by incorporating the material learnt in week 4 through to 7. Primarily, focusing on the two main research options of either using qualitative and/ or quantitative methods for data collection. Based on the research proposal in assignment 1, the suggested data collection method may not use both qualitative and quantitative methods. Nonetheless, the paper will discuss in detail the pros and cons of using qualitative and quantitative methods in research. It is from this backdrop that the research proposal presented in week 4 entitled, “Is Financial Inclusion Linkage Effective for the Bank of Zambia Monetary Policy” will be part analysed for the best suited data collection method to use in conducting the research.

Etica cercetării se bazează pe o serie de principii, dintre care cele mai semnificative sunt reprezentate de onestitatea obținerii şi prezentării rezultatelor, nonvătămarea subiecților umani, respectarea autonomiei subiecților şi principiul beneficienței.
În cadrul ştiinţific, teoriile existente, care au un număr ridicat de adepţi, vor avea tendinţa de a fi instituite ca un mainstream şi apoi, utilizând instrumentul ,,controlului colegial” sau al evaluării colegiale, de a dicta asupra rezultatelor, nu doar asupra metodei. Metodologia însăşi face parte din corpusul teoretic al unei paradigme, ca atare controlul metodologic instituie un control al temelor cercetării şi, implicit, asupra rezultatelor, raţionalizând ce este şi ce nu este ştiinţific. Adevărul ştiinţific capătă caracterul unui construct social. Fiind o mediere a interpretărilor, adevărul ştiinţific trebuie supus unui control etic. Care este însă atitudinea etică recomandabilă, într-un univers ştiinţific care se constituie tot mai mult din ,,semnificaţii” decât din ,,cunoaştere sistematică”?

La investigación en pregrado ha sido un planteamiento presente en las políticas de investigación de la UPEL, así como en el perfil del egresado docente de esta universidad, materializado en sus planes de estudio, en especial en los componentes de Práctica Profesional y Especializado. Para el caso particular del programa de Ciencias de la Tierra del IPC, lo constituye el curso Proyecto en Ciencias de la Tierra. El objetivo fundamental del presente trabajo consistió en evaluar los logros del curso Proyecto en Ciencias de la Tierra, para presentar los indicadores de productividad y progreso del mismo (período 1992-2007). La metodología se basó en el análisis cuantitativo de información referente a los proyectos de investigación ejecutados en el marco del curso, recolectada en una matriz diseñada para ello, y con base en las siguientes categorías de análisis, según el número de proyectos por año: matrícula de ingreso, período lectivo, rendimiento académico, área de investigación, línea de investigación, entidad federal, sexo, presentaciones de ponencias en eventos nacionales e internacionales, y artículos científicos publicados. Los resultados señalan como años más productivos a 1996, 1998, 2003 y 2007. La matrícula de ingreso más exitosa corresponde a 1991-II, y en cuanto a períodos lectivos a 1996-II y 2007-II. El mayor número de trabajos (71,14 %) obtuvieron calificaciones con puntajes entre 7 y 9 en la escala de 1 a 10. Las áreas de investigación con mayor número de proyectos desarrollados son Geomorfología, Hidrósfera, Climatología, Pedología y Geología; y las líneas de investigación corresponden a Geomorfología Fluvial y Costera de Venezuela, Aguas Naturales: Sistemas Superficiales, Climatología Regional de Venezuela, El Cuaternario en Venezuela, y Gestión y Educación para la Mitigación y Reducción del Riesgo y el Desastre. Las entidades federales más abordadas son Vargas, Distrito Capital, Aragua y Miranda. La mayor participación estudiantil de la especialidad Ciencias de la Tierra como ponentes en las JAI del IPC, se observó en las III (1995), IV (1996), V (1997) y XII (2005) ediciones. También han sido publicados 8 artículos de investigación en revistas especializadas, como productos de los resultados de los trabajos de pregrado.

The growing use of project management as a strategy for organizations to develop their intents is a tendency present
in the last decades that gained power in the late 2000’s. However, this subject is not totally covered by scholarly
research. This study aims to measure the recent scenario of the project management success field as a way to better
understand this field of research. A bibliometric study was developed with a portfolio of 64 papers about “project
management success” collected at the Web of Science (ISI) database, covering the evolution of this topic over the last
five years (from 2000 to 2014). Articles were analyzed by journal, most cited keywords, citations, co-citations,
journals’ impact factors and abstract analysis. Conclusions pointed out significant authors and journals, and also a
significant cluster of papers written by Aaron Shenhar, as a relevant source of information to the project management
success field. These information may be used by other authors to spur other studies about the project management
success subject, not covered by this research.

Nigeria is a west African country with abundant natural resources and harbours a long term aspiration is to be among the top 20 economies in the global world by the year 2020. These lofty objectives can only be achieved and or realized through the requisite mega and multiple infrastructural development projects, programs and portfolios within the Nigeria's built environment. Portfolio is defined as projects, programs, subsidiary portfolios, and operations managed as a group to achieve strategic objectives. However, Organizations still struggle with the resource sharing problem across projects as well as constant changes in their portfolios. Also, the rate at which many organizations' businesses and portfolios get abandoned or fold within one or two decades in Nigeria is worrisome. The aim of this research paper is to identify and discuss the factors shaping Project Portfolio management in Nigeria's built environment with a view of identifying, examining, and highlighting the impact of some selected factors on

Innovation Platforms (IPs) are seen as a promising vehicle to foster a paradigm shift in agricultural research for development (AR4D). By facilitating interaction, negotiation and collective action between farmers, researchers and other stakeholders, IPs can contribute to more integrated, systemic innovation that is essential for achieving agricultural development impacts. However, successful implementation of IPs requires institutional change within AR4D establishments. The objective of this paper is to reflect on the implementation and institutionalisation of IPs in present AR4D programmes. We use experiences from sub-Saharan Africa to demonstrate how the adoption and adaptation of IPs creates both opportunities and challenges that influence platform performance and impact. Niche-regime theory is used to understand challenges, and anticipate on how to deal with them. A key concern is whether IPs in AR4D challenge or reinforce existing technology-oriented agricultural innovation paradigms. For example, stakeholder representation, facilitation and institutional embedding determine to a large extent whether the IP can strengthen systemic capacity to innovate that can lead to real paradigm change, or are merely 'old wine in new bottles' and a continuation of 'business as usual'. Institutional embedding of IPs and – more broadly – the transition from technology-oriented to system-oriented AR4D approaches requires structural changes in organisational mandates, incentives, procedures and funding, as well as investments in exchange of experiences, learning and capacity development.

This paper contends that focusing on the efficient and effective ways of resolving interpersonal conflict between the Architects and Builder in the Nigerian construction industry is a major means of tackling the issues than emphasis on individuals personalities, and as such, the crucial goal should focus on preventing conflicts from arising during the initiation stage than trying to solve it when it occurs during the project execution. The paper focus majorly on the central tenets between the two professionals. However, win-lose situation, interdependence, budget allocations and lack of information were identified as the major factors contributing to the conflicts between the builder and the architects on a building projects.

This research was focussed on the determinants of powerplant project success in Kalangala district using a case study of Bukuzindu Hybrid Solar and Thermal Power Project. The study objectives of the study were; to establish the effect of project team skills on the success in power plant projects within Uganda; to determine the extent to which project management influences success in power plant projects within Uganda; to investigate the effect of project planning on the success in power plant projects within Uganda. The study used both qualitative and quantitative methods to generate information from project staff that included technicians, administrators and project officers and senior management officials. Data was analysed using SPSS and regression analysis was used to show the strength of the relationship between the independent and dependent variable. The hypothesis was tested using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). The results showed that project management had a significant impact on project success with p<0.01, similarly project team skills had a positive effect on project success with p<0.01 and also project planning on the success in power plant projects with p<0.01.  It was therefore concluded that project management, project team skills and project planning were essential for the success of powerplant projects in Kalangala district.
