Lo studio della storia dell'architettura si arricchisce di suggestione se, parallelamente all'analisi delle architetture in pietra, calcestruzzo, malta e mattoni, giunte fino a noi, si porta avanti in modo costante lo studio di quelle che sono state le strutture effimere della festa, ossia quell'insieme di manufatti in tela, legno, stucco, gesso e cartapesta che, calati nel tessuto vivo e pulsante della città, hanno costituito delle forme complementari a quella che era l'architettura permanente: la costante che gli architetti ricercavano in queste vere e proprie rappresentazioni teatrali era rendere vivida nello spettatore l'effetto di sinestesia, nel quale la luce, l'architettura, la musica e il tempo si fondevano insieme a creare una vera e propria forma di "arte totale".

This paper is part of the lodging of investigation on theater architecture and entertainment places for deeper changes and developments that occurred between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. In the years of transition between the two centuries the theatrical life, characterized by great intellectual vigor, causes profound changes not only in setting architectural and construction of such buildings, but also in the reorganization of the city and in the planning of expansion areas.Many urban areas shall have buildings for theatrical performances, which become collective symbol of the building in the service of society; it is an architectural design which is still in legacies of the past, but stimulated by different influences - political, social and language - centered in the definition of proposals that are an expression of a new urban and social identity. In Italy, where almost all urban areas have a theater, with the National Units develops a renewed fervor; particularly, in Rome, when it becomes the capital of the new nation, there is a frantic building activity aimed at reshaping the urban fabric to adapt to new political and administrative tasks. This process of transformation becomes an opportunity to define new leisure facilities, buildings constructed almost entirely to private enterprise initiative and placed, for the most part, in the different areas of expansion of the city where they become the ‘strong signs’ and aggregation elements.
L’articolo s’inserisce nel filone d’indagine sulle architetture dei teatri e dei luoghi dello svago, per approfondirne trasformazioni e sviluppi tra Ottocento e Novecento. Negli anni di passaggio tra i due secoli la vita teatrale, caratterizzata da grande vivacità intellettuale, determina profondi mutamenti sono solo nell’impostazione architettonica e costruttiva di tali strutture, ma anche nella riorganizzazione della città e nella pianificazione delle aree di espansione. Molti centri urbani si dotano di complessi per lo spettacolo, ormai simbolo dell’edificio collettivo a servizio della società; si tratta di una progettazione caratterizzata ancora da retaggi del passato, ma stimolata da influenze diverse - politiche, sociali e linguistiche - incentrate nella definizione di proposte espressione di una nuova identità urbana e sociale. In Italia, dove quasi tutti i centri urbani hanno un teatro, con l’Unità nazionale si assiste a un rinnovato fervore; nello specifico, a Roma, dopo il trasferimento della Capitale, si verifica una frenetica attività edilizia volta a ridisegnare il tessuto urbano per adattarlo a nuovi compiti politici e amministrativi. Tale processo di trasformazione diviene occasione per definire nuove strutture per lo svago, organismi questi sorti quasi interamente per iniziativa dell’imprenditoria privata e localizzati, per lo più, nelle diverse aree di espansione della città dove diventano i ‘segni forti’ ed elementi di aggregazione.

In recent years studies of the history of photography and speculation on the nature of the photographic medium have proliferated, providing photography with a new academic respectability. But at curious imbalance is evident in this new area of study, with concentration on the photographic traditions of Britain and America (and, to a lesser extent, France) tending to obscure those of other cultures. Roberto Bossaglia's exhibition of photographs of Rome, however, suggests that a study of the history of Italian photography may offer more than a mere footnote to the current debate.

This contribution focuses on what was a topical subject in Rome in the first half of the twentieth century: urban green areas and their relationship with monuments. Interest in this topic was probably inspired by the traditional approach popular in nineteenth-century England, one which several members of the Roman cultural elite who studied vegetation and gardens (Giacomo Boni and Maria Ponti Pasolini) had become acquainted with thanks to the close ties they had established with English professionals. Since the unification of Italy, Rome had raised the issue of the inseparable relationship that city ruins had with vegetation; in fact, the 1873 master plan already contained guidelines regarding the layout of urban gardens, preferably using an English style. These guidelines played a crucial role in city planning and in creating unique areas, such as the Passeggiata Archeologica (the Archaeological Park, also known as the Zona Monumentale). The paper will focus on these developments and on the work of the people involved in these projects such as, Giacomo Boni, Maria Ponti Pasolini and Gustavo Giovannoni, all members of the Artistic Association of Architectural Connoisseursthe AACAR founded in Rome in 1890, in order to follow the urban development of Italy's capital city.

Il contributo approfondisce un argomento di grande dibattito, a Roma, nella prima metà del Novecento: il sistema del verde cittadino in rapporto ai monumenti. Interesse, probabilmente, mutuato dalla tradizione inglese ottocentesca visto che alcuni personaggi della cultura romana, dediti allo studio della vegetazione e dei giardini (Giacomo Boni, Maria Pasolini Ponti), sul finire del secolo stringono stretti rapporti con esponenti anglosassoni (W. Morris, Ph. Webb, W. D. Caröe). Roma, sin dall’Unificazione italiana, pone la questione del rapporto inscindibile che i ruderi, all’interno della città, hanno sviluppato con il mondo vegetale; il Piano Regolatore del 1873, infatti, già contiene precise indicazioni in merito auspicando l’organizzazione di giardini cittadini, preferibilmente all’inglese. Prescrizioni che acquisiscono un ruolo fondamentale nella configurazione che la città sta assumendo, dando luogo a esperienze uniche; tra queste si ricordano: la ben nota sistemazione dei Fori e del Palatino, con il relativo dibattito sulla “Flora delle rovine”; il giardino progettato nell’angolo tra la ricostruenda chiesa di S. Rita da Cascia e la scala d’Aracoeli; l’organizzazione di largo Argentina e del Tempio di Venere e Roma; la lunga vicenda della Passeggiata archeologica; l’esperimento del parco di Traiano su colle Oppio; il parco Savello sull’Aventino e molti altri. Non meno interessanti le figure di: Giacomo Boni e i continui rapporti di collaborazione con i tecnici dell’Orto botanico, Gustavo Giovannoni, Antonio Muñoz e Raffaele De Vico. Esperienza unica, quella italiana, nell’unione tra giardino e monumento, che viene presentata, con grande successo, anche alla Conferenza di Atene del 1931 e che sarà seguita da numerosi altri progetti per la città.

The urban transformation of Rome, once the city became the capital of the unified Italy, led to the erection of many buildings bearing Latin inscriptions with a strong ideological connotation. Palazzo Costanzi, built in 1878 in front of Piazza dell’Esquilino, shows a quotation by Horace (Serm. I 8, 14) saying that “now it is possible to live on the healthy Esquiline Hill”. If in the Augustan age it was thanks to Maecenas, at that time these words ascribed such merit both to the owner of the house Domenico Costanzi and to its architect Gaetano Koch. An answer to this assertion is given by an inscription carved on Palazzo Bassi, built in 1887. Here the building itself states that after the realization of Corso Vittorio Emanuele II it does not envy the healthy Esquiline Hill. By quoting the same Horace’s words, the architect of Palazzo Bassi Giulio Podesti clearly wanted to stress the beauty of his work compared to Koch’s: this epigraphic dialogue has been lasting until today.

Despite some hiccups in the process of ratification of the Treaty of Maastricht, the progressive diminution of the sovereignty of individual European nation states is already well under way. While national capitals like London and Paris and assured of continuing prominence as centres of finance, publishing, advertising, media and fashion, the future of Rome is less predictable. This paper looks at historical, social and cultural developments which are intersecting with institutional changes to determine Rome's future beyond 2000.
