Resumo: Este artigo analisa a mútua ingerência entre o matrimônio e o compadrio entre membros de uma elite rural do distrito de Piranga, localidade pertencente ao Termo de Mariana em Minas Gerais. Defende-se que estas duas práticas relacionais oferecem importantes chaves para compreensão das hierarquias sociais, da mobilidade sócio-espacial e enraizamento social. Como resultados, notou-se que através de casamentos com importantes famílias, indivíduos de outras regiões galgavam ascensão social e econômica através da inserção nos principais círculos relacionais da localidade em estudo. Por fim, perceberam-se importantes diferenças intergeracionais na prática do compadrio, a qual demonstra a importância em analisar esta prática conjuntamente ao ciclo vital.
Abstract: This work analyze the mutual interference between marriage and godparentage among members of a rural elite in the Piranga district, a place in the jurisdiction of the 'Termo de Mariana'. It is argued that these two relational practices offer important keys to understanding social hierarchies , social and spatial mobility and social embedded. As results, it was observed that through marriages with important families, individuals from other regions aspired social and economic ascension through insertion in the main relational circles of the locality under study. Finally, have been noted significant differences in intergenerational practice of godparentage, which demonstrates the importance in analyzing this practice jointly the life cycle.

Creative choice is an individual act. As in other fields such as filmmaking, dance creation is based on a cognItive dualism that considers the choreographer as the creative decision-maker, while the dancer is objectified. The dancer’s body is an instrument for exploration of the choreographer’s imagery. We claim that the products of creativity are minute but crucial modifications of transitory stages of a dance rehearsal. On the one hand, attention is given to a dance company as a distributed cognitive system. The choreographer communicates in diverse modalities, which carry specific information, physical as well as symbolic. Through the analysis of an audiovisual and cognitive ethnography with ELAN software we find differences in decision-making patterns across multimodal instructions. On the other hand, we apply Social Network Analysis and UCINET software as a methodological innovation in order to formalize data from observed rehearsal settings. In all, the choice of modalities in the chorographical instruction shapes movement production, which is based on dyads, triads and other forms of creative interaction.

Nowadays, Global Value Chain (GVC) theoretical framework has become a tool can be utilized by country and company to understanding its competitive advantage and position in global economy. By governing companies from various country around the globe into global network relationships, GVC has shown a great value added to the product. The competition among lead firms are built through their ability to gain the most efficient production by sourcing globally, in which involve local company, and Multi National Enterprise's (MNE's) located at developing country. Indonesia is a case of country in which many global lead firms include local company in its value chains. This study aim to understand the value chain governance of Indonesian local company within footwear's industry organized by a global brand and its contribution to development of the local company. This paper revealed that the involvement of local company within Indonesian footwear industry is driven by global lead firm. The first tier suppliers are mostly from Taiwan and only one Indonesia local company on the value chain. While the lead firm undertaking process of design, distribution and marketing, Indonesian local company performing mostly manufacturing activities. However, there is a dynamic transformation in which local company start involving in development stage of the footwear.

Esta tesis plantea un estudio semiótico – etnográfico de la problemática de los Residuos Sólidos Urbanos (RSU), desde el punto de vista de la generación individual de residuos.  Enfocamos las representaciones y prácticas que operan en la instancia de descarte post consumo,  a fin de comprender las significaciones sociales sobre la basura, así como las motivaciones y barreras para la incorporación del hábito de separación de residuos. Según la legislación vigente, esta práctica le corresponde al consumidor-generador individual, sin embargo es aún poco extendida en la Ciudad de Buenos Aires, el territorio nacional con mayor GPC de residuos (1,63kg/hab). Dado que nuestra hipótesis es que los hábitos de descarte están condicionados por la relación de los individuos con su ambiente —lo que implica que la separación de residuos es una práctica situada— circunscribimos un territorio específico para realizar nuestro estudio: la Facultad de Ciencias Sociales de la UBA, donde coordinamos el Programa Sociales Sustentable. La elección de una institución universitaria como campo de análisis está motivada en la misión de innovación y transformación social que tiene toda universidad.

Social networks have been found to play an increasing role in human behaviour and even the attainment of individuals. We present the results of two projects applying SNA to language phenomena. One involves exploring the social propagation of neologisms in a social software (microblogging service), the other investigating the impact of social network structure and peer interaction dynamics on second-language learning outcomes in the setting of naturally occurring face-to-face interaction. From local, low-level interactions between agents verbally communicating with one another we aim to describe the processes underlying the emergence of more global systemic order and dynamics, using the latest methods of complexity science. This article reviews the political history of one of most important lineages of caciques from northern Patagonia during the expansion of the Argentine national state (second half of 19th Century). In earlier publications, the authors explored this subject using the historical narrative method on a heterogeneous set of sources: correspondence of caciques, authorities and travelers records, lists of indigenous soldiers, etc. In this article, they apply tools from Social Network Analysis (SNA) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to the same source base. Using these new approaches, the authors trace changes in indigenous and Creole relational topology in the context of state emergence. Changes are documented through graphs representing the evolution of parental networks, and indigenous power structure, through a series of critical events between 1856 and 1883. The main hypothesis is that the Mapuche and Tehuelche lineages provided the frame for building alliances, which were more political than ethnic in nature. The experiment underlines the importance of merging the morphological and structural analysis that SNA and GIS enable with the singularity of the historical behavior of the actors.

Social network analysis has become a major subject in recent times, bringing also several challenges in the computer science field. One aspect of the social network analysis is the community detection problem, which is seen as a graph clustering problem. However, social networks are more than a graph, they have an interesting amount of information derived from its social aspect, such as profile information, content sharing and annotations, among others. Most of the community detection algorithms use only the structure of the network, i.e., the graph. In this paper we propose a new method which uses the semantic information along with the network structure in the community detection process. Thus, our method combines an algorithm for optimizing modularity and an entropy–based data clustering algorithm, which tries to find a partition with low entropy and keeping in mind the modularity.

Effective policy mixes are expected to accommodate uncertainties in the future policy context by being flexible and adapt over time in expectation of a range of anticipated and unanticipated conditions. In response to shifts in the future policy context, while policy changes can manifest as increments to status quo over time, policymakers may also need to face the possibility of making major policy shifts to enable the transition into more appropriate policy regimes. In the context of socio-technical transitions, the switch to new policy alternatives can be facilitated by incorporating new policy actions into the suite of current policy strategies early on, which can also help accommodate the long lead-times on some decisions and actions. This paper is a conceptual piece that focuses on integrating policy design thinking into the crafting of conscious policy choices and mixes to enable socio-technical transitions while considering the likely changes in the future policy context.

The explosion in the use of social networks has led to the creation of new kinds of security and privacy threats. Many users are unaware of the risks involved with exposing personal information, a fact that makes social networks a “bonanza” for spammers and identity thieves. In addition, it has already been proven that even the concealment of all personal data might not be enough to provide protection, as one’s personal information can be inferred by analyzing one’s connections to other users. In this paper we present the “link reconstruction attack”, a method capable of inferring one’s connections to others with high accuracy. We show that the concealment of ones links is ineffective if not done by others in the network and present an analysis of the performance of various machine learning algorithms for link prediction inside communities.

Cities are the height of human achievement. Cities are fraught with ambivalence. We adore city life, it stimulates, entertains and excites. Conversely, urban experiences are scary, disorientating and may be physically and mentally deleterious. Cities are crucibles of democracy, yet remain cauldrons of inequality and injustice. Cities are open and tolerant, but perversely elitist and exclusionary. City streets provide unexpected encounters which can enrich our lives, or disturb deeply. Ambivalence regarding the nascent modern industrial city was captured quintessentially in the visceral eloquence of Alexis de Tocqueville's disturbingly ambivalent assertion, that 1840s Manchester was a vile, filthy cesspit from which flows pure gold, thereby allowing the attainment of civilisation while converting men of all ranks into desperate savages. Above all, it is in the public spaces of cities –  street, squares, piazzas, plazas and parks - that some of the best and the worst characteristics of urban life and society are created, observed and reproduced. These sites are the geographical focus of this book and are interrogated drawing on the spatial triad ideas promulgated by the French, Marxist, sociologist-philosopher Henri Lefebvre. Looking at history in a new light in this book means exploring the histories of shifting representations of space and ascertaining the implications for the production of space and what Lefebvre called differential spaceI seek in this book to explore the production of space and in so doing stimulate a rethinking of Lefebvre’s spatial theories and the essence of urban public space. From this overarching aim flow two research objectives: 1) to tease out the implications of the production of space for post-industrial city transformation, 2) to unravel the role of differential space in such transformation. Empirically the research is grounded in three iconic post-industrial cities: Vancouver, Lowell Massachusetts and Manchester England. Although strongly rooted theoretically, the book locates the conceptual ideas in the practice of urban policy making, urban planning and the politicised everyday use of public space, especially differential space – a surprisingly neglected concept in urban studies. The timescale is from the 1960s to 2010s.

The present study is a theoretical and literary review of online social network sites and their impact on social capital. In this review, the Facebook is selected as one popular and important online social networking site in the world today. To This end, first two main concepts of social capital, bridging and bonding social capital has been provided. Next, the concept of online social networks and the impact of FB on social networks are discussed.

Se estudian las redes sociales que se encuentran entre los habitantes
de un partido de la campaña de Buenos Aires entre fines de la colonia y principios de la etapa independiente. El trabajo se basa en el análisis del parentesco tanto sanguíneo como ritual para establecer posibles redes que permitieran generar un entramado de reciprocidades simétricas y asimétricas. El vínculo básico aquí estudiado es la conformación de parejas a través del análisis de los archivos parroquiales de bautismos y matrimonios, pero la investigación no se detiene en las parejas constituidas mediante el sacramento sino que indaga también en las informales. El resultado final es que las relaciones así establecidas fortalecían u originaban y organizaban lazos entre vecinos nativos, así como integrarse a la sociedad a los recién venidos, en una época de intensa movilidad horizontal.

Abstract Two important challenges in policy design are better understanding of the design space and consideration of the temporal factors. Moreover, in recent years it has been demonstrated that understanding the complex interactions of policy measures can play an important role in policy design and analysis. In this paper, the advances made in conceptualization and application of networks to policy design in the past decade are highlighted. Specifically, the use of a network-centric policy design approach in better understanding the design space and temporal consequences of design choices are presented. Network-centric policy design approach has been used in classification, visualization, and analysis of the relations among policy measures as well as ranking of policy measures using their internal properties and interactions, and conducting sensitivity analysis using Monte Carlo simulations. Furthermore, through use of a decision support system, network-centric approach facilitates ranking, visualization, and selection of policies using different sets of criteria, and exploring the potential for compromise in policy formulation. The advantage of the network-centric approach is providing the ability to go beyond visualizations and analysis of policies and piecemeal use of network concepts as a
tool for different policy design tasks to moving to a more integrated bottom–up approach to design. Furthermore, the computational advantages of the network-centric policy design in considering temporal factors such as policy sequencing and addressing issues such as layering, drift, policy failure, and delay are presented. Finally, some of the current challenges of network-centric design are discussed, and some potential avenues of exploration in policy design through use of computational methodologies, as well as possible integration with approaches from other disciplines, are highlighted.

Photo sharing is a captivating feature which popularizes Online Gregarious Networks (OSNs). Lamentably, it may leak users' privacy if they are sanctioned to post, comment, and tag a photo liberatingly. In this paper, we endeavor to address this issue and study the scenario when a utilizer shares a photo containing individuals other than him/her (termed co-photo for short). To obviate possible privacy leakage of a photo, we design a mechanism to enable each individual in a photo be cognizant of the posting activity and participate in the decision making on the photo posting. For this purport, we require an efficient facial apperception (FR) system that can apperceive everyone in the photo. However, more authoritatively mandating privacy setting may limit the number of the photos publicly available to train the FR system. To deal with this dilemma, our mechanism endeavors to utilize users' private photos to design a personalized FR system concretely trained to differentiate possible photo co-owners without leaking their privacy. We additionally develop a distributed consensus predicated method to reduce the computational intricacy and for fend the private training set. We show that our system is superior to other possible approaches in terms of apperception ratio and efficiency. Our mechanism is implemented as a proof of concept Android application on Facebook's platform.

Using a variety of quantitative approaches, interactions between prehistoric sites in the Göksu valley and south-central Anatolia are modelled within their wider multi-regional and diachronic socio-economic networks to assess the prominence and influence of communities in south-central Anatolia from the Late Chalcolithic to the end of the Early Bronze Age (c. 4200–2000 BC). Since the 1950s, some have understood the valley as significant in terms of movement and communication through the Taurus mountain chain that divides the southern Anatolian plateau from the Mediterranean coast. This view is called in to question through the application of geospatial and computational methods, namely least cost pathway and social network analyses. Archaeologists use least cost pathway analysis to model movement in the past. Similarly, social network analysis is used to model contact and interaction in the past. The approach adopted in this paper seeks to combine the two methods to investigate social structure and the nature of interaction in late prehistoric south-central Anatolia. The results suggest that views of the Göksu valley as the primary or a prominent means of connecting the southern Anatolian plateau and the Mediterranean coast may need to be reassessed.Göksu vadisindeki prehistorik yerleşimler ve güney Anadolu'nun orta kısımları arasındaki etkileşim farklı ölçüm yöntemleri kullanılarak değerlendirilmiş ve Geç Kalkolitik dönemden Erken Tunç Çağı'nın sonuna kadar (yaklaşık M.Ö. 4200–2000) çok bölgeli ve art zamanlı sosyo-ekonomik bir ağ içinde modellendirilmiştir. 1950'lerden bu yana pek çok araştırmacı güney Anadolu platosunu Akdeniz kıyılarından ayıran Toros dağları üzerindeki bu vadinin bölgesel hareket ve iletişim açısından önemli olduğu görüşünü kabul etmişlerdir. Sonuçlar, güney Anadolu platosunu Akdeniz kıyılarına bağlayan ve bariz bir biçimde başlıca ulaşım yolu olarak karşımıza çıkan Göksu Vadisi'nin yeniden değerlendirilmesi gerektiğini düşündürmektedir.

This paper uses a nationally representative dataset of discussion relationships to determine what Americans consider to be an important matter, whether some topics are predominantly discussed with certain types of associates, and if the topic of discussion or the role of the discussant predicts the availability of social support. Results indicate that some topics are pursued or avoided with particular types of alters, and that the role of the discussant, but not the topic of discussion, predicts the availability of support from our discussion partners. This implies that some differences in measured network structure may be due to variations in topics discussed, but that topic says little about the supportiveness of the tie once we are dealing with important matters discussants.

Introducción. El presente artículo expone el análisis de las características de la comunicación política en el segmento rusoparlante de la red social Facebook a base de grupos políticamente activos y sus actores. Al contrario de lo habitual en los EEUU y otros países, los usuarios de blogs rusos prefieren plataformas que combinan elementos típicos de un blog y los de las redes sociales tipo Facebook. Los datos fueron recogidos en un momento político complicado para Rusia (rebeldía en Ucrania) lo que avivó la actividad de la oposición rusa y los procesos manipuladores en las redes sociales rusas. Objetivos. El objetivo era clasificar los actores políticamente activos de Facebook ruso y analizar su comportamiento sociolingüístico. Metodología. Se efectuó un análisis interdisciplinar de los grupos políticos (N 200) y actores (N 291) durante enero-mayo 2014. Resultados. Según sus opiniones políticas los actores principales fueron clasificados como oficiales-gubernamentales, de oposición y nacionalistas y juzgando por su actividad como proyectores de espacio comunicativo, manipuladores, grafómanos y autores de Clusters locales. Su comportamiento comunicativo y verbal también ha sido analizado donde fueron identificadas identidades virtuales específicas compartidas.  Discusión y conclusiones. Desde que las redes sociales están siendo utilizadas cada vez más con fines políticos el análisis de los procesos sociolingüísticos en las comunidades virtuales activas políticamente ha adquirido mucha importancia tanto en Rusia, como en el resto del mundo. Como la perspectiva del desarrollo futuro del presente estudio se contempla la detección de la relación entre la actividad comunicativa de los actores online y offline dentro de los grupos señalados.

Purpose - Constant question in determination of a social system state is how to obtain a sufficient quantity of information with a small enough, manageable indicator set.

Design/methodology/approach - The concept is developed in a thorough analysis of strengths and weaknesses of existing approaches, and in thorough contrasting the proposed solutions with these.

Findings - The social free energy and social entropy overcome the gap between the meta-theoretically founded quantities and indicators related to social system state description. The social free energy measures the totality of resources used for social system preservation during changes in environment. The social entropy measures the number of different realisations of a
particular state.

Practical implications - Combination of social free energy and social entropy is on the one hand a set of quantities easily determinable from available data, and on the other hand a set of indicators ntuitively connected with social system states. We relate the system social free energy and levels of organisation and adaptation. From these measures we derive the measure of social system adaptation.

Originality/value - The use of social free energy in describing the social system states adds a significant value in forming the small set of representative indicators. It is of importance for all researchers; theoreticians and practitioners.

This article draws upon ethnographic accounts of female potters’ movement and
intermarriage into multi-ethnic Pueblo communities in the U.S. Southwest to illustrate
how marriage networks created opportunities for innovation through the production,
distribution, and consumption of boundary objects. These objects did not define
boundaries but facilitated boundary crossing or bridging by potters. I argue that the
concept of boundary objects is more useful than hybridity for understanding the
processes of culture contact and material culture diffusion. Archaeological evidence
for late twelfth through thirteenth century migrations from the Four Corners to the
southern Colorado Plateau is used to make a case for a high degree of intermarriage and
post-marital movement of women. Such patrilocality challenges normative views of
post-marital residence, including those employed by early ceramic sociologists working
in the same area of the Southwest and even at the same sites. The case that I discuss
provides a contrast to other Southwest examples in which conformist transmission was
more common, and helps to solve a paradox in explanations of the Southwest Pueblo
Sprachbund. I conclude that the concept of boundary objects complements formal
social network approaches in archaeology by bringing out the active role of objects in
linking social actors.

El propósito de este artículo es esencialmente aportar a la renovación metodológica en el campo de la investigación social. En concreto, se buscar presentar y fundamentar sobre las potencialidades del uso del estudio de las redes personales a partir de la aplicación de conceptos, métodos y técnicas propios del enfoque del Análisis de Redes Sociales (ARS). El método será desafiado como herramienta para abordar uno de los temas recurrentes en los debates sociológicos, la contigüidad espacial para la construcción de la comunidad. En concreto, nuestro soporte contextual será el aprendizaje obtenido a partir de la aplicación de este método en la investigación realizada para evaluar el impacto de Internet en la formación de capital individual y colectivo en un conjunto seleccionado de localidades de la Patagonia chilena caracterizadas por sus niveles críticos de aislamiento.

Este artigo problematiza as estratificações sociais no passado brasileiro a partir da análise das relações de compadrio e das sociabilidades cotidianas de um domicílio chefiado por um indivíduo livre, pardo, que desenvolvia a atividade de carpinteiro na localidade em que vivia. Postula-se que as redes sociais que o envolvia naquela sociedade escravista oferecem importantes elementos para compreensão das hierarquias sociais, da mobilidade sócio-espacial e enraizamento social, além de dar subsídios para se conhecer os mecanismos de manutenção do prestígio social e do poder. Utilizou-se na pesquisa realizada, informações contidas em recenseamentos
populacionais e registros paroquiais de batismo, por meio das quais, partindo de técnicas específicas da demografia histórica, conheceu-se o espaço em estudo a partir da composição populacional do mesmo. Por fim, a Análise de Redes Sociais
evidenciou o posicionamento de ‘pardos livres’ e como se estruturam dentro da hierarquia social vigente.

La modernización económica se extiende por el espacio a partir de focos irradiadores. Como los historiadores han demostrado, no se industrializan las naciones, ni las regiones por completo, sino unidades territoriales más pequeñas, como las comarcas. Este artículo pretende señalar la relación entre el espacio y el desarrollo económico, tomando como referencia el concepto de territorio de progreso, que hace alusión a aquellos espacios que asimilan pautas tecnológicas, organizativas y comerciales propias de las regiones más avanzadas. Se toma como objeto de estudio el caso de Andalucía entre 1886 y 1959 para, en primer lugar, localizar la actividad económica en sistemas empresariales locales; y, posteriormente, identificar aquellos sistemas empresariales que se convirtieron en territorios de progreso. La investigación, basada en la información de los registros mercantiles, concluye que en Andalucía, durante el periodo estudiado, existieron pocos territorios de progreso, lo que condicionó la trayectoria económica de la región.

In a groundbreaking article, Moody and White (2003) introduced the concept of structural cohesion, simultaneously characterizing emergent communities and their internally embedded layers by the number of node-independent paths interconnecting individuals. Like many studies, however, they “corrected” the directionality discovered in some of their data. While often done for important purposes, doing so potentially confounds structural cohesion with unrelated concepts. Some relations, especially those relating to the dynamic aspects of social life, are inherently directed, in whole or in part, and it may prove worthwhile to respect this directionality. In this article, I recast structural cohesion in terms of directed social relations and identify four distinct ways of measuring it. In two example data sets—hiring relations among graduate programs and trust relations among neighborhood residents—I show that only strong embeddedness, a type of structural cohesion emerging from directed relations, proves to be a powerful, robust, independent explanatory factor. I further show that if the directionality in the data in these examples had been “corrected,” the importance of structural cohesion would have been dramatically undervalued.

Fairness evaluating effects of prescriptions is
indispensably importance in disease treatment. The development
of Intelligence Technologies nowadays makes it realizable for a
moderation of subjective prescription evaluations in medicine. In
this paper, we present an application of Self-Organizing Map
(SOM) to visualization of herbal prescription effects in Oriental
Medicine (OM). The application is used to estimate influence of
herbal ingredients prescribed for patients who have several
concurrent diseases. Inputs to the SOM are herbal treatment
prescriptions, and an output is a map that shows disease states
that can be influenced by these prescriptions. Training data is
133 standard prescriptions with 221 popular herbs in 17 disease
groups collected from oriental medical text books by experienced
doctors. First, the prescription problem in OM is described. Next
the system structure and implementation of a proposed system
are shown. Finally the visualization abilities of the proposed
system verified by experienced doctors are presented

This paper amalgamates the field of positive psychology and social network analysis to explore what are the character strengths and virtues of individuals with high centrality measures within a close group of adolescent females. Research in the field of social network analysis in the last few decades has given a good understanding of different centrality measures. Today, we know what does an individual with high degree centrality, high betweenness centrality etc. signify in a group, this paper goes a step further, we attempt to find the correlation between individuals with high centrality measures and their character strengths. We analyze the friendship relationship of three different close groups of adolescent females studying in an undergraduate class. We construct the network of each class based on the friendship status and measure in-degree centrality, and betweenness centrality. The individuals with high centrality measures were then asked to undergo VIA character strength analysis. To investigate the correlation we quantified the character strength of the adolescent females with high centrality measures into numeric values using inverse transform and weighted sum technique. Our results show that an individual with highest in-degree centrality have kindness as one of her most prominent character strength, and individual with highest betweenness centrality have honesty, fairness and leadership as her prominent character strengths. Since an individual can be trained for particular character strengths, this correlation can help in training adolescent females (and may be extended to other groups) for specific role in an organization and society as a whole.
