Termination

This paper addresses a general class of two-stage stochastic programs with integer recourse and discrete distributions. We exploit the structure of the value function of the second-stage integer problem to develop a novel global optimization algorithm. The proposed scheme departs from those in the current literature in that it avoids explicit enumeration of the search space while guaranteeing finite termination. Computational experiments on standard test problems indicate superior performance of the proposed algorithm in comparison to those in the existing literature.

In this paper, the filter technique of Fletcher and Leyffer (1997) is used to globalize the primal-dual interior-point algorithm for nonlinear programming, avoiding the use of merit functions and the updating of penalty parameters. The new algorithm decomposes the primal-dual step obtained from the perturbed first-order necessary conditions into a normal and a tangential step, whose sizes are controlled by a trust-region type parameter. Each entry in the filter is a pair of coordinates: one resulting from feasibility and centrality, and associated with the normal step; the other resulting from optimality (complementarity and duality), and related with the tangential step. Global convergence to first-order critical points is proved for the new primal-dual interior-point filter algorithm.

Despite the increasing relevance of model transformation techniques in model-driven software development, research is mainly conducted to the specification and the automation of such transformations. However, since the transformations themselves may also contain conceptual flaws, it is essential to formally analyze them prior to executing them on user models. In the current paper, we focus on a central validation problem of trusted model transformations, namely, termination and propose a Petri net based analysis method that provides a sufficient criterion for the termination problem of model transformations captured by graph transformation systems.

We propose a novel approach to proving the termination of heap-manipulating programs, which combines separation logic with cyclic proof within a Hoare-style proof system.Judgements in this system express (guaranteed) termination of the program when started from a given line in the program and in a state satisfying a given precondition, which is expressed as a formula of separation logic. The proof rules of our system are of two types: logical rules that operate on preconditions; and symbolic execution rules that capture the effect of executing program commands. The objective of this paper is to look at employment services and labor market policies in the transition countries of Eastern Europe and Central Asia, and identify key benefits and constraints of active labor market programs, as well as the main characteristics and features of successful policy interventions. Various policy options are discussed on how to enhance public employment services but also private employment agencies which might be relevant to and suitable for the countries in the region given their macroeconomic and labor market situation. Overall, this report recommends that greater resources will be needed for active labor market programs (ALMPs) in the future. However, the emphasis should be put on improving the design and effectiveness of ALMPs, rather than on increasing spending levels only.

Injuries due to mauling by bears are rarely reported in the literature. The high incidence of such injuries in Kashmir, India, which is a valley surrounded by dense forests and is a habitat of Asiatic Black bears, urged us to undertake such a study in our department.The study was conducted both retrospectively (January 1990–July 2005) and prospectively (August 2005–December 2007).A total of 417 cases were recorded and all the injuries were caused by black bears alone. Majority of the patients were young to middle-aged (96.8% of cases) and predominantly males (80.33%). The incidence was highest during July to November (76.82%), and most of the attacks (97%) occurred during daytime. Soft-tissue injury occurred in all 417 cases, bones were involved in 131 (31.41%) while the visceral organs were injured in four (12.94%) patients. The face (80.57%) was most common part of the body injured, followed by the head (54.67%), and all the patients had soft-tissue injury (100%). In spite of devastating injuries caused by bear maulings, the mortality rate was only 2.39%.Injuries due to mauling by black bear occur mainly between July and November. The young and middle-aged men have a higher tendency to be wounded. The face and head were the most commonly affected sites, while visceral injuries were rare. Mortality was low, and reconstruction of many of the injuries was challenging, often necessitating a staged procedure. Those living in villages close to black bear habitats may benefit from education related to the risk and severity of the attacks in the hope of reducing the number of injuries seen.

Background Recent evidence has linked induced abortion with later adverse psychiatric outcomes in young women. Aims To examine whether abortion or miscarriage are associated with subsequent psychiatric and substance use disorders. Method A sample (n=1223) of women from a cohort born between 1981 and 1984 in Australia were assessed at 21 years for psychiatric and substance use disorders and lifetime pregnancy histories. Results Young women reporting a pregnancy loss had nearly three times the odds of experiencing a lifetime illicit drug disorder (excluding cannabis): abortion odds ratio (OR)=3.6 (95% CI 2.0–6.7) and miscarriage OR=2.6 (95% CI 1.2–5.4). Abortion was associated with alcohol use disorder (OR=2.1, 95% CI 1.3–3.5) and 12-month depression (OR=1.9, 95% CI 1.1–3.1).
