Topophilia

Notre analyse cherche à appréhender l' espace comme une donnée importante conditionnant le personnage principal, son action et son parcours. Conçu en retour par le personnage dans sa dimension affective, l' espace s' exprimera tout au long du roman à travers les affects de la philie et de la phobie. Cet article se proposera donc d' explorer la dimension affective de la relation du personnage principal Mikhaïl à l' espace dans lequel il se meut. Les deux concepts fondamentaux de la topophilie et de la topophobie seront mis au service de notre analyse : les sentiments relatifs à l' espace urbain tisseront le récit de Georges Corm, constituant ce que nous appellerons une « géographie subjective ». Ainsi, se superposant au malaise topophobique résultant de l' expérience urbaine, la topophilie participe également de l' expérience initiatique qui rend la production romanesque possible.

According to William Robertson Smith’s and Paul Florensky’s thesis that the ritual as a cult foundation is the base of every religion and culture, this paper explores the interdisciplinary structure, dynamics and understanding of the sacral space in which the Holy Liturgy is practiced within the Serbian Orthodox Church. With the theoretical and methodological guidelines of the anthropology of Christianity, this paper studies the liturgical and theoretical function of the temple with the goal to analyze the liturgical ritual in a concrete space in relation with the posturing and positioning of the body, the orientation, direction and kind of movement of the liturgy participants. The author claims that it is necessary to place the operative focus on the naos, the part of interior intended for participants, since its use is most susceptible to variations which can be relevantly empirically monitored. Thus the subject focuses on the spatial behavior in the mentioned part of the temple and its border zones, both during the Holy Liturgy and individually, passing from doctrinal into the sphere of folk Christian orthodoxy.

El escritor Antonio Tabucchi homenajea a Portugal en Réquiem. Una alucinación, nouvelle que resignifica Lisboa mediante la polisensorialidad y el estado onírico. La ciudad se reconstruye y se torna de vital importancia para el protagonista, quien emprende un viaje personal e íntimo con el fin de llenar vacíos de su vida lúcida, fragmentos que, al igual que los distintos lugares de la ciudad que atraviesa, están dispersos y reflejan la vida posmoderna tantas veces problematizada por el autor en su obra.
Para examinar la reconstrucción del espacio que plantea la obra del escritor italiano, recurriremos a algunas hipótesis de la Topofilia, la Geocrítica y la Antropología Urbana desarrolladas por Tuan, Westphal y García Canclini, respectivamente. El objetivo final es evaluar cómo la descripción de la ciudad es el punto de partida para reflexionar, en Réquiem…, acerca de cuestiones como el paso del tiempo, la vida y la muerte.

Topophilia, or love of place, has been described as a desirable outcome of urban planning. The rhythms of
movement within a city can help build topophilia, particularly if diverse rhythms bring together disparate groups,
creating spaces of urban encounter. Multi-rhythmic spaces can partly be a product of deliberate design; spaces of
overlapping rhythms create ‘space’ for spontaneous connections that can build a sense of community and social capital.
In contrast, spaces dominated by single rhythms can be dead spaces agood deal of the time, such as monochronous commuter corridors. Granville Island, Canada is given as an example of a designed space that facilitates both the movement of people in diverse ways at different times, and incorporates non-human rhythms as well. The space does,however, contain unconscious and invisible barriers created for diverse ethnic, income and ‘others’ that could be addressed with adaptive and deliberative planning for inclusion.

La fachada del Edificio Ermita es un símbolo de Tacubaya y de sus habitantes. Este nodo urbano ha adquirido categorías simbólicas a nivel interpersonal y colectivo, formando parte del inconsciente colectivo de los habitantes como un espacio que no se encuentra en ningún otro sitio de la ciudad.

Diseñado por el arquitecto Juan Segura, construido en los años 30, y ubicado en el cruce de las avenidas Jalisco y Revolución en Tacubaya; el Edificio Ermita ha sido una de las construcciones más emblemáticas de la Ciudad de México desde su inauguración en 1936. La importancia y significación colectiva de este edificio se debe, en gran medida a la publicidad exterior que ha albergado desde siempre su fachada, misma que ha sido un ícono del paisaje urbano de la zona.

The Soviet state created mass-housing to reshape the city and everyday life itself. This paper examines the spaces and objects of mass-housing to examine the relationship between residents, the state and objects within Soviet everyday life. Approaching the study of everyday life in the Soviet Union from the early 1920s to the late 1980s via the spaces of mass-housing can offer a tangible approach to a way of life that might otherwise seem strange or uncanny. This paper uses ethnographic analysis by drawing on scholarly sources along with five historical photographs. The mass housing spaces of the kommunalka and later khrushchyovka served as places of push and pull. The state attempted to expand the public realm while residents simultaneously tried to create privacy and individuality. Globalization has allowed for the international flow of information, goods, services and, oddly enough, medical patients. Medical tourism is a growing globalized industry, where the ability to pay and willingness to travel have become prerequisites for medical care. The case study of cosmetic surgery in Colombia reveals that the advertising and information provided online compliments the literature’s descriptions of what is desirable and sought out by medical tourists. Johnston et al. (2012) established that the medical tourist’s interest in the characteristics of the country they visit is minor. However, the underlying national stereotypes or aesthetics may have an unconscious effect of association on the decision of medical tourists. The paper introduces an affective approach to the study of territory and territoriality. Previous discussions of 'territoriality', it is shown, have commonly focused on symbolic dimensions. Where affect has been addressed, it has been mostly in relation to the 'topophilic bond' of people and territory. Instead, the paper suggests understanding both re-and deterritorialization processes as inherently affective. This draws attention to how a series of affective 'vectors'-including fear and aconchego-intensify or dampen de-and reterritorializations. Moreover, it sheds new light on the formation of capacities of acting in spatial context. To develop this argument, the paper draws on approaches to affect that are inspired by Gilles Deleuze's reading of Spinoza. It then uses the examples of fear and what in Portuguese is called aconchego to illustrate some of the analytic questions thus arising. What emerges is an affective cartography that entails understanding power relations as affective, rendering previous distinctions between 'territory' and 'territoriality' questionable.

I aim to examine the spaces and architectural elements of movement and observation in mystery sanctuaries such as Eleusis and Samothrace, as well as other sanctuaries in Ancient Greece. It is a study of structures and the spatial progressions between and around them, features not only built on grounds of aesthetic or structural purposes, but as a means of heightening the senses and shaping the ceremonial activities of worshipers while enhancing ritual enactment. A series of uniquely designed spaces, either enclosed or open which were created to induce specific emotions were among the key elements of ancient sanctuary architecture. In demonstrating how relevant these spaces are for understanding the significance of spatial progressions, the physical as well as psychological effect of religious experience connected to traversing, processing, gathering and witnessing will be presented.

RESUMO

          Este estudo investiga a existência, modos e características dos sentimentos topofílicos e topofóbicos a partir da perspectiva dos moradores em situação de rua. Para tanto, analisou-se a literatura geográfica humanista em busca de suas definições de lugar, lar e topofilia, e buscou-se embasamentos teóricos para a compreensão etnográfica dos moradores em situação de rua. Por fim, procedeu-se a entrevistas através de questionário no objetivo de compreender as características de sua espacialização e relação sentimental com o lugar.

ABSTRACT

          This study investigates the existence, modes and characteristics of topophilic and topophobic feelings from the perspective of homeless people. In order to do so, it was analyzed the humanist geographic literature aiming its definitions of place, home and topophilia, and it was sought theoretical bases for the ethnographic understanding of the homeless people. Finally, interviews were conducted through a questionnaire in order to understand the characteristics of their spatialization and their relationship with the place.

This article focuses on the emotional perception of space in Stig Saeterbakken's novel Gjennom natten (2012). Topoanalysis is used to examine the various emotions that the protagonist Karl feels about specific spaces-be it a house, an apartment, a part of an apartment, or a city. It turns out that space serves as a projection surface for Karl's feelings. Therefore, his descriptions of the respective spaces usually coincide with the narrator's mood, and in this sense, topoanalysis allows us to predict and better understand the motivations behind the protagonist's actions. Based on Gaston Bachelard's space concept and Yi-Fu Thuan's terminology, Karl's feelings are classified as topophilia (love of place) and topophobia (fear of place). However, the analysis has shown that the binary opposition topophilia-topophobia is not sufficient for determining the emotions presented and, therefore, the terms "topoaversion" and "topoanimosity" are introduced.

Geospatial humanities projects rely on information found in gazetteers to supply the infrastructure for projects. However, a majority of spatial gazetteers provide place names and geographical coordinates but lack contextualizing information that give meaning to a place, making them insufficient resources for humanities inquiry. In this article, I explore contemporary approaches to data collection and models for cultural gazetteers set forth by early modern chorographical traditions to lay the foundation for building community-driven, open cultural gazetteers. Concurrently, the role of the public in providing Volunteered Geographical Information (VGI) by harnessing user-friendly tools is explored.

This chapter explores how community might be reimagined for the benefit of public health as well as to promote incipient social or economic agendas born of progressive citizen action aimed at what is commonly characterized as development or, perhaps, even more broadly as “growth.” Can a city like Huntington, West Virginia, emerge as a positive example of what we might term postindustrial urban regeneration and perhaps even community healing? Can this happen specifically through a grassroots movement now finding local governmental support in a collective attempt to transform this place from one defined primarily by the productive capacity of factories to one that might appeal to small business entrepreneurs—many of whom may be members of a category of potential in-migrants that some scholars, planners and, increasingly, government officials around the United States have called “creatives”? This chapter contributes to academic and popular discussion of how throughout the vast archipelago of former industrial sites—a legacy of a dominative urban-industrial political economy—small cities like Huntington might plan a healthy way forward that promises sustainable, restorative growth in an economic and social landscape that has been shifted by profound structural changes that appear to require a significantly different way of doing things.

Brouillage des temps, brouillage des activités, brouillage des statuts, des espaces de vie, des échelles et recompositions, tendances aux alliances et aux recompositions multi-acteurs et multi scalaires concourent à une hybridation des structures, des objets et des pratiques. Le processus est particulièrement actif dans ces espaces particuliers, urbi et orbi. On peut parler d’hybrides pour qualifier ces « lieux infinis » assemblages hétérogènes, temporaires, instables et réversibles à haute valeur ajoutée et leurs habitants temporaires. On peut parler d’« hybridation » pour qualifier le processus de transformation à plus ou moins forte intensité et
lisibilité, et aux effets incertains, dans un souci d’amélioration d’une situation, de résistance ou de transgression. On peut parler « d’hybridité » pour évoquer la posture du devenir et de l’ouvert des hommes, des organisations et des espaces qui mettent en avant la capacité à
franchir les frontières sociale, ethnique ou politique ou les normes imposées. Le véritable intérêt de ces lieux réside dans le «devenir hybride», l’indéterminé, l’identité en mouvement et la puissance créatrice de ce «passage de frontières», de cette transgression, de ce détournement. Elle constitue une autre définition de l’infini, mais aussi une « manière de
fluer » (Benveniste, 1965) et d’habiter le rythme. L’hybridation qui traverse ces lieux est une invitation à ne pas demeurer celui que l’on croit être, à conserver son identité mais à innover (Gwiazdzinski, 2016). Toujours il faut repartir, se reconstruire ou répondre au défi de l’altérité par une création continuée. L’invitation à faire « l’expérience de la présence en un
lieu » (Maldiney, 2007) vaut pour la ville comme pour ses habitants permanents ou temporaires.

This research, conducted with groups of undergraduate students before and after a European fieldwork exercise, critically examines the pedagogic value of fieldwork and its ability to provide students with transferable skills. This is achieved using Anderson and Erskine's (2014) lens of tropophilia – the aesthetic connection between people and place – to explore the influence of 'being' in the field upon affective learning. In doing so, this research suggests (1) that encouraging students to recognise how their own affective skills may influence the types of knowledge(s) that are produced on fieldtrips and (2) that people-place connections have the ability to inspire students to become more self-reflexive about their position(s) as learners.

Si bien el objetivo específico de la investigación que fundamenta este artículo fue caracterizar el paisaje del Valle de Mexicali desde la percepción de sus habitantes, y por ello el interés se centró en la valoración que hacen de dicho paisaje, los resultados permiten acercarse a la topofilia a través de las razones que dieron los entrevistados para preferir o identificarse con un determinado lugar de la región estudiada.

The textual analysis of the verbal description about the landscape given by Mexicali Valley inhabitants showed aspects of valuation, as well as similarities and differences according to age group. Also, some emotional and experiential elements that have an impact on the preferences and identification that those indi-viduals expressed in relation to some places in the region were revealed, in which the term topophiliabecame apparent. Although the main purpose of the research in this article was focused on the inhabitants’ perception about Mexicali Valley
landscape, the results allowed approaching topophilia through the reasons given by the interviewed persons for preferring or identifying with a particular place in the region studied.

El valor del diseño en la generación de topofilia y su participación como agente de cambio en el espacio público: un acercamiento indisciplinar Resumen— El espacio público era generalmente apropiado por las personas a través de las diversas relaciones generadas en su vida cotidiana, concibiendo lo denominado topofilia. En la actualidad, parece necesario protegerse del espacio público debido a que éste suele ser percibido como peligroso, lo que lleva a la perdida de interés por apropiarlo, y con ello, a la toponegligencia. El presente documento plantea que desarrollar topofilia hacia el entorno humano –pensado como fenómeno complejo– no es posible a partir de acercamientos unidisciplinares. Lo anterior es expuesto a partir de un acercamiento crítico a algunos de los proyectos concebidos para desarrollar espacios públicos desde enfoques unidisciplinares. Asimismo, desarrolla una reflexión, desde el diseño, sobre la necesidad de abordar la construcción del espacio público de maneras no unidisciplinares. Palabras Clave— topofilia, toponegliencia, diseño, espacio público. Introducción La vida cotidiana anterior a la producción industrial del automóvil, era muy distinta. En ese entonces, las personas se encontraban a pocos minutos de la estación de ferrocarril, a unos pasos de las tiendas y a unos minutos del campo. La complejidad existente en el espacio público en esos tiempos era muy distinta de la que presentan las ciudades modernas hoy en día. Por ello, si queremos comprender la manera en que se construye y vive una ciudad actualmente, no podemos hacerlo desde una visión única, ya sea esta material, social, capitalista o antropológica. Es primordial se considere a partir del conjunto de sistemas que confluyen en ella; en relación a todos los actores sociales que en ella se desarrollan, que le dan vida, la construyen y la transforman. Hoy por hoy de acuerdo con Borja (2001) y como también lo plantea Vidal, siguiendo a Sennett (1970, 1973), existe un declive del espacio público, cuya principal característica es el desplazamiento de los asuntos públicos a la esfera privada y la ocupación de lo público por asuntos privados, lo que nos enfrenta a la desaparición de los espacios públicos tradicionales, espacios de discusión donde se genera el sentido y se negocian los significados, sustituidos por espacios de creación privada destinados a ser objeto de consumo. La segmentación de la ciudad y la globalización, principalmente la relacionada con las tecnologías de comunicación, disminuyen la posibilidad de significación y apropiación del espacio y generan en su lugar la privación sensorial (Cardona, 2008). En otras palabras se limita la generación de topofilias 3. La palabra topofilia es un neologismo, útil en la medida en la que puede definirse con amplitud para incluir todos los vínculos afectivos del ser humano con el entorno material, es el sentir que uno tiene hacia un lugar porque es nuestro hogar, el asiento de nuestras memorias o el sitio donde nos ganamos la vida. La topofilia –cuando llega a ser muy fuerte– puede transformar el lugar o el entorno en portador de acontecimientos de gran carga emocional y obtener un carácter simbólico (Tuan, 1977). Para Tuan (1974), la topofilia es el lazo afectivo entre las personas y el ambiente circundante. Difuso como concepto, vívido y concreto en cuanto a experiencia personal. Si bien el objetivo específico de la investigación que fun - damenta este artículo fue caracterizar el paisaje del Valle de Mexicali desde la percepción de sus habitantes, y por ello el interés se centró en la valoración que hacen de dicho paisaje, los resultados permiten acercarse a la topofilia a través de las razones que dieron los entrevistados para preferir o identificarse con un determinado lugar de la región estudiada.

A partir del análisis textual de las descripciones verbales que hacen del paisaje del Valle de Mexicali sus habitantes, se descubren aspectos de la valoración que se hace del mismo, así como coincidencias y divergencias según el grupo de edad. Asimismo, se hacen evidentes algunos elementos emocionales y vivenciales que inciden en las preferencias e identificación que los individuos manifiestan respecto de algunos lugares de la región, y que se relacionan con el término “topofilia”. The textual analysis of the verbal description about the landscape given by Mexicali Valley inhabitants showed aspects of valuation, as well as similarities and differences according to age group. Also, some emotional and experiential elements that have an impact on the preferences and identification that those indi-viduals expressed in relation to some places in the region were revealed, in which the term topophiliabecame apparent. Although the main purpose of the research in this article was focused on the inhabitants’ perception about Mexicali Valley landscape, the results allowed approaching topophilia through the reasons given by the interviewed persons for preferring or identifying with a particular place in the region studied. Unique among housing initiatives, Housing First operates on the principle that every person has the right to a safe and secure home regardless of housing readiness. The Housing First Support Program, operated by Homeward Trust Edmonton, is currently providing over 2,500 Edmontonians with secure housing and the supports needed in the transition from homelessness into housing. The program is intended to last 12 months, gradually reducing a client’s support untilthey are self-sufficient; however, this may be difficult for some clients, especially if they experience poor accessibility to the services and amenities they require to achieve housing stability.
