Varieties

Introduction Cassava is traditionally grown as a subsistence crop and is one of the main sources of energy for many people, especially those living in remote rural upland areas. Cassava roots are a low-cost energy source for livestock feed and can also be used to produce starch. Leaves of cassava are high in protein (typically 18-28% crude protein) and can be eaten by people or fed to their livestock. However, cassava roots and leaves contain hydrogen cyanide (HCN) and need to be processed before eating or feeding to animals.

Eight plant products, viz. neem leaf powder, NSK powder, curry leaf powder, custard apple leaf powder, citrus peel powder, turmeric powder, begunia leaf powder and karanj leaf powder, each @ 5 g/kg seeds were used for management study of Corcyra cephalonica on two sesamum varieties (Smarak and Amrit). Highest larval mortality, pupal mortality and minimum adult emergence were recorded on seeds treated with NSK powder up to a tune of 81.67%, 8.33% and 10.00% as compared to 5.00%, 0% and 95.00% in control in Smarak whereas 83.33%, 6.67% and 10.00% with respect to 6.67%, 0% and 93.33% in control in Amrit respectively. NSK powder treated sesame seeds showed highest germination of 91.67% in Smarak and 92.00% in Amrit. Per cent adult emergence of Corcyra cephalonica and weight loss of seeds were recorded on three sesamum varieties, viz. Smarak (white), Amrit (brown) and Prachi (black) after two months of infestation. Variety Prachi showed minimum infestation by Corcyra cephalonica exhibiting lowest adult emergence (36.67%) with highest phenol (2.72 mg/g) and protein (17.10%) content as compared to variety Smarak (93.67%), where phenol and protein content was 1.30 mg/g and 13.74%, respectively. In Amrit, the adult emerged was recorded 85.33%.

An experiment was conducted to classify and evaluate the available gerbera cultivars (Gerbera jamesonii, Hook) in Bangladesh. We used twenty four gerbera cultivars and those were coded from V1-V24. It was found that V8, V9. V10, V11, V12, V15, V16, V19, V20, V21, V22, V23 and V24 were performed as best in terms of different growth, yield also the quality contributing characters. These cultivars (V8-V12, V15, V16, V19-V24) also provided plenty of variation for leaf area (ranges from 215.7 cm2 to 231.1 cm2). We found that flower head diameter was >10.0 cm (except V8), peduncle diameter was >8.0 mm, standard peduncle length >30.0 cm and petal thickness >0.39 mm (except V8) for these the best performing cultivars ((V8-V12,  V15,  V16,  V19-V24). On  the  other  hand  we  had  classified  these 24 gerbera cultivars into 5 classes according to their blooming pattern. The five classes are singles (V1, V4, V14) doubles (duplex) (V5, V12, V18, V21, V22, V23, V24), crested doubles (V2, V3, V6, V7, V8, V10, V11, V15, V16, V19, V20), full crested doubles (V9) and quilled crested doubles  (spider) (V13, V17).

An experiment was conducted at Agronomy Farm of the Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, Dhaka to study growth and yield responses of tomato varieties. Experiment consisted of four varieties, viz. BARI Tomato-4 (V1), BARI Tomato-5 (V2), BARI Tomato-7 (V3) and BARI Tomato-9 (V4) using Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. Tallest plant (101.3 cm), maximum number of leaves (114.1/plant) and maximum number of branches (10.0/plant) was found from BARI Tomato-7. While maximum number of flowers (6.1/cluster), number of fruits (5.0/cluster), number of clusters (17.9/plant) were found from BARI Tomato-9. However, maximum fruit diameter (20.1 cm), individual fruit weight (115.9 g), yield (34.7 kg/plot and 95.9 t/ha), number of locule (4.4/fruit) were also found from BARI Tomato-7. Virus infestation, fruit length and Total soluble solid (TSS) were statistically identical among the varieties.

Determination of physical characteristics of grain of biomaterials is important in the design of harvesting, handling, and processing equipment. This helps in understanding the problem of separating grains from undesirable materials during threshing and winnowing, as well as in designing post-harvest handling equipments. Physical properties of sorghum grains from ten varieties (7 released and 3 breeding lines) were investigated under three different grain moisture content of 10%, 20% and 30% dry basis (d.b.). Results from the experiment revealed wide variation among the sorghum varieties on the physical properties measured. Arithmetic Mean Diameter ranged from 4.233 mm to 4.872 mm, while the Geometric Mean Diameter of the varieties ranged from 4.215 mm to 4.864 mm. Sphericity for the different sorghum varieties fall within the range of 0.86 to 0.96. It was also observed that the surface areas of the sorghum varieties are between 52.2 mm 2 to 70.00 mm 2. The results further showed that Aspect ratio ranged from 0.84 to 0.94 and the Angle of repose for the sorghum varieties were from 31.51 0 to 34.25 0. Result from the study revealed that, increase in moisture content led to increase in the surface area, arithmetic mean diameter, geometric mean diameter, sphericity and angle of repose. Variety and changes in moisture content significantly affected the physical properties determined. SIGNIFICANCE: The findings of the research study presented in this paper could be used in the design of processing machines for wide varieties of sorghum crop that are under cultivation. Se caracterizaron veinte variedades de musaceas de diferente composicion genetica: AB, BB, AAA, AAB, ABB, AAAA y AAAB, del Banco de Germoplasma existente en la hacienda Las Vegas, de Fedeplatano, Chinchina (1360 m.s.n.m., 4° 58´ N y 75° 20´ O), Colombia. La caracterizacion incluyo propiedades fisicas como peso, diametro, longitud, materia seca y porcentaje de cascara del fruto y propiedades funcionales como harinas y almidones. El analisis de componentes principales (ACP) mostro que las variedades de platano se diferencian por su mayor tamano (peso, longitud y diametro). M. B. Tani, ICAFHIA 110, Saba, y los platanos del subgrupo Bluggoe tuvieron altos porcentajes de cascara. Entre los demas clones no se observaron diferencian entre si. Los platanos de coccion del subgrupo Plantain presentaron el mayor contenido de materia seca.
