Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) have been successfully employed for predicting and forecasting groundwater levels up to some time steps ahead. In this paper, we present an application of feed forward neural networks (FFNs) for long period simulations of hourly groundwater levels in a coastal unconfined aquifer sited in the Lagoon of Venice, Italy. After initializing the model with groundwater elevations observed at a given time, the developed FNN should able to reproduce water level variations using only the external input variables, which have been identified as rainfall and evapotranspiration. To achieve this purpose, the models are first calibrated on a training dataset to perform 1-hour ahead predictions of future groundwater levels using past observed groundwater levels and external inputs. Simulations are then produced on another data set by iteratively feeding back the predicted groundwater levels, along with real external data. The results show that the developed FNN can accurately reproduce groundwater depths of the shallow aquifer for several months. The study suggests that such network can be used as a viable alternative to physical-based models to simulate the responses of the aquifer under plausible future scenarios or to reconstruct long periods of missing observations provided past data for the influencing variables is available.

This study provides new evidence of the presence of an ancient Roman road in correspondence to a paleobeach ridge now submerged in the Venice Lagoon (Italy). New high resolution underwater seafloor data shed new light on the significance of the Roman remains in the lagoon. The interpretation of the data through archive and geo-archaeological research allowed a threedimensional architectural reconstruction of the Roman road. The presence of the ancient Roman road confirms the hypothesis of a stable system of Roman settlements in the Venice Lagoon. The study highlights the significance of this road in the broader context of the Roman transport system, demonstrating once more the Roman ability to adapt and to handle complex dynamic environments that were often radically different from today.

The paper reconstructs when the Lagoon of Venice, Italy, was frozen over in the last 1400 years. The paper combines various proxies and instrumental readings, i.e.: written documentary sources since the origin of Venice; evidence from visual arts referring to 1709, 1789 and 1791 as well as some pictures taken in 1929 and 2012; finally, instrumental observations since 1716. A critical revision has been made of all sources in order to reject duplications or exaggerations introduced by late compilations.

The paper combines various proxies and instrumental readings, i.e.: written documentary sources since the origin of Venice; evidence from visual arts referring to 1709, 1789 and 1791 as well as some pictures taken in 1929 and 2012; finally, instrumental observations since 1716. A critical revision has been made of all sources in order to reject duplications or exaggerations introduced by late compilations.

Introductions of exotic macroalgae have increased recently on European shores. Each introduction involves at least one vector of transfer. For macroalgae, the potential vectors are aquaculture (intentional or accidental introduction), fouling on hulls, ballast water, aquarium trading, fishing nets.
Coastal lagoons, including Venice and Thau Lagoon, developed into major hotspots of marine macrophyte introductions in the Mediterranean Sea. Moreover, in shallow lagoons and estuaries, eutrophication processes have resulted in the development of macroalgal biomass.
The most characteristic species of these macroalgal communities include members of the ulvophycean genus Ulva L. In foliose Ulvales, simple morphology and anatomy, rampant convergence, remarkable degrees of phenotypic plasticity in response to environmental factors tend to confound attempts at identification and make cryptic introduction difficult to detect.
During a survey of macroalgal biodiversity in Venice Lagoon, among the pool of exotic species found, there was an Ulva differing from the Atlantic and Mediterranean species in both vegetative and reproductive features. Detailed observations consented us to identify the taxon as Ulva pertusa Kjellman, previously reported in the Mediterranean only for Thau Lagoon.

This article discusses multisensorial aesthetic experience of environmental materiality via a craft process. The locally situated study investigates the interrelations of humans and environment through soil. In focus is how craft practitioners use their material sensitivity to reflect the idea of interdependency in the context of the contemporary environmental discourse. This is done through presenting an artistic research project in which craft is used to explore the human imprint in a particular geological environment, the Venice Lagoon. The case study Traces from the Anthropocene: Working with Soil combines environmental research methods of contaminated soil and artistic research in the field of ceramic art. Craft making provides an embodied way to engage with the local environment. The cultural value and environmental disruption of the lagoon area forms a context for reflecting the aesthetic experience to better understand how we are active participants, in continuous flux with our material environment .

Oggi la laguna di Venezia è il risultato di una costante evoluzione di quegli stagna che Livio segnala descrivendo l' avventura di Cleonimo ad litora Venetorum (X, 2). Stagna che, contrariamente a quanto in passato si pensava, le ricerche hanno dimostrato essere stati frequentati sin da tempi remotissimi. E attraverso le fonti ci si chiede quale coscienza si avesse nel passato di un comprensorio particolare costituito da terra e acqua insieme. Questo genere morfologico ibrido sembra in realtà essere avvertito non solo da noi, ma anche dagli antichi scrittori che utilizzano per la laguna termini indefiniti e talora intercambiabili, in larga misura sfuggenti. Ciò sembra ragionevole soprattutto in un contesto a morfologia variabile, dove la presenza antropica si dovette ogni giorno confrontare con un paesaggio che poteva mutare in breve tempo.

REDESIGNING VENICE BETWEEN PORT DEVELOPMENT AND LAGOON PROTECTION: A LONG-TERM QUESTION ABSTRACT: The Venice Lagoon is a complex ecosystem always in evolution. Human interventions have profoundly altered its balance. This article explores the evolution of the Venetian port system with particular attention to the issue of anthropogenic impact. The first traces of this debate can be found at the beginning of the nineteenth century: for this reason, the work presents a bipartite structure and an interdisciplinary methodology that combines historical analysis with the most recent ecological investigations and planning policies.

In this paper we present ourselves as the " historical witnesses " of a problematic phenomenon which has afflicted Venice for centuries. The frequency of flooding in Venice has drastically increased over the last 50 years as a major consequence of natural and anthropogenic land subsidence, and a more active lagoon hydrodynamics induced partly by deepening of the largest navigation channels. Is Venice dying, a victim of its environment and of its own success? Many people fear so: the local residents who observe the decline of their beloved city, the Italian authorities, the millions of visitors. Beyond the splendour of restored churches and palaces, beyond the magnificent façades the reality is dramatic: the city is now often admired from gigantic ships in the Giudecca canal by cruisers of modern times. The survival of Venice as a living and vibrant city is at risk. The lagoon environment has always been characterized by a pronounced morphodynamics, inducing important morphological changes to the lagoon setting over the relatively short time of a few centuries. The aim of this paper is to analyse the history of the disasters which characterized this fascinating world surrounded by waters. In fact, the economic system and the existence of the " Serenissima " Republic itself was based on " water ". Water meant refuge, safety, nourishment, wealth, military strength, and prospect for new developments.

'City of waters', Venice represents a unique example of the challenges to be met in order to reconcile the conflicting demands of heritage preservation, infrastructural development and environmental management.
This paper expands on the strategic value of Archaeological Impact Assessments (AIA) – studies initiated in response to development proposals that will potentially disturb or alter archaeological sites – by presenting a case study related to an AIA undertaken in Venice prior to the construction of a pipeline stretching across the central and south parts of its lagoon (Fusina Integrated Project). The morphology of this area is very complex and diverse, and it is characterised by the presence of numerous canals, shallows and shoals, a landscape (or, rather, a waterscape) shaped by countless natural and anthropogenic modifications that occurred over the past centuries. The AIA involved the analysis of a variety of datasets acquired through historical, archaeological, geomorphologic and palaeo-environmental investigations coupled with information retrieved by remote sensing imagery analysis and interpretation, and direct survey. The analysis of these datasets led to the identification of a new, large archaeological site located along the planned pipeline track. The elevated ‘archaeological sensitivity’ of this area caused a change in the project plan, resulting in the relocation of the original pipeline track at an early stage of the work.
