Venice Lagoon

Oggi la laguna di Venezia è il risultato di una costante evoluzione di quegli stagna che Livio segnala descrivendo l' avventura di Cleonimo ad litora Venetorum (X, 2). Stagna che, contrariamente a quanto in passato si pensava, le ricerche hanno dimostrato essere stati frequentati sin da tempi remotissimi. E attraverso le fonti ci si chiede quale coscienza si avesse nel passato di un comprensorio particolare costituito da terra e acqua insieme. Questo genere morfologico ibrido sembra in realtà essere avvertito non solo da noi, ma anche dagli antichi scrittori che utilizzano per la laguna termini indefiniti e talora intercambiabili, in larga misura sfuggenti. Ciò sembra ragionevole soprattutto in un contesto a morfologia variabile, dove la presenza antropica si dovette ogni giorno confrontare con un paesaggio che poteva mutare in breve tempo.

This study provides new evidence of the presence of an ancient Roman road in correspondence to a paleobeach ridge now submerged in the Venice Lagoon (Italy). New high resolution underwater seafloor data shed new light on the significance of the Roman remains in the lagoon. The interpretation of the data through archive and geo-archaeological research allowed a threedimensional architectural reconstruction of the Roman road. The presence of the ancient Roman road confirms the hypothesis of a stable system of Roman settlements in the Venice Lagoon. The study highlights the significance of this road in the broader context of the Roman transport system, demonstrating once more the Roman ability to adapt and to handle complex dynamic environments that were often radically different from today.

The archaeological site of Ca’ Ballarin, located along the banks of the San Felice canal (Venice lagoon), represents, due to its typology, one of the most important underwater archaeological finds in the Mediterranean. It was identified in 1998, during surveys aimed at verifying the archaeological interest of a project of the Ministry of Public Works (Magistrato alle Acque).
The underwater surveys have confirmed three areas of finds along the San Felice canal. Area 2 consists of a quadrangular elevated room (9 x 10 m), built in sesquipedal bricks. Inside, filled with debris, a well was later found.. The complex has been interpreted as a “Venetian well” ante litteram. The environment is a decanting cistern which, through a filter made up of sand and river pebbles, was used to purify the water that used to flow into the well.
This archaeological site has been subject of surveys, stratigraphic investigations and an underwater restoration carried out between 1998 and 2002. The well was investigated in 2003. The whole structure was built around the second half of the 1st century AD or early 2nd century. As reported by an Axis of Emperor Philip the Arab, found in the stratigraphy of the utilization of the well, the life cycle of this structure seems to end towards the middle of the 3rd century AD.
The cistern-well is located near the remains of a very important “Villa Maritima”, and there is certainly a connection between the two constructions. It is also possible that the cistern-well served as “water supply” for the ships navigating inland along the Fossa.

REDESIGNING VENICE BETWEEN PORT DEVELOPMENT AND LAGOON PROTECTION: A LONG-TERM QUESTION ABSTRACT: The Venice Lagoon is a complex ecosystem always in evolution. Human interventions have profoundly altered its balance. This article explores the evolution of the Venetian port system with particular attention to the issue of anthropogenic impact. The first traces of this debate can be found at the beginning of the nineteenth century: for this reason, the work presents a bipartite structure and an interdisciplinary methodology that combines historical analysis with the most recent ecological investigations and planning policies.

Tidal channels are crucial for the functioning of wetlands, though their morphological properties, which are relevant for seafloor habitats and flow, have been understudied so far. Here, we release a dataset composed of Digital Terrain Models (DTMs) extracted from a total of 2,500 linear kilometers of high-resolution multibeam echosounder (MBES) data collected in 2013 covering the entire network of tidal channels and inlets of the Venice Lagoon, Italy. The dataset comprises also the backscatter (BS) data, which reflect the acoustic properties of the seafloor, and the tidal current fields simulated by means of a high-resolution three-dimensional unstructured hydrodynamic model. The DTMs and the current fields help define how morphological and benthic properties of tidal channels are affected by the action of currents. These data are of potential broad interest not only to geomorphologists, oceanographers and ecologists studying the morphology, hydrodynamics, sediment transport and benthic habitats of tidal environments, but also to coastal engineers and stakeholders for cost-effective monitoring and sustainable management of this peculiar shallow coastal system.

The paper reconstructs when the Lagoon of Venice, Italy, was frozen over in the last 1400 years. The paper combines various proxies and instrumental readings, i.e.: written documentary sources since the origin of Venice; evidence from visual arts referring to 1709, 1789 and 1791 as well as some pictures taken in 1929 and 2012; finally, instrumental observations since 1716. A critical revision has been made of all sources in order to reject duplications or exaggerations introduced by late compilations.

This article discusses multisensorial aesthetic experience of environmental materiality via a craft process. The locally situated study investigates the interrelations of humans and environment through soil. In focus is how craft practitioners use their material sensitivity to reflect the idea of interdependency in the context of the contemporary environmental discourse. This is done through presenting an artistic research project in which craft is used to explore the human imprint in a particular geological environment, the Venice Lagoon. The case study Traces from the Anthropocene: Working with Soil combines environmental research methods of contaminated soil and artistic research in the field of ceramic art. Craft making provides an embodied way to engage with the local environment. The cultural value and environmental disruption of the lagoon area forms a context for reflecting the aesthetic experience to better understand how we are active participants, in continuous flux with our material environment .

Introductions of exotic macroalgae have increased recently on European shores. Each introduction involves at least one vector of transfer. For macroalgae, the potential vectors are aquaculture (intentional or accidental introduction), fouling on hulls, ballast water, aquarium trading, fishing nets.
Coastal lagoons, including Venice and Thau Lagoon, developed into major hotspots of marine macrophyte introductions in the Mediterranean Sea. Moreover, in shallow lagoons and estuaries, eutrophication processes have resulted in the development of macroalgal biomass.
The most characteristic species of these macroalgal communities include members of the ulvophycean genus Ulva L. In foliose Ulvales, simple morphology and anatomy, rampant convergence, remarkable degrees of phenotypic plasticity in response to environmental factors tend to confound attempts at identification and make cryptic introduction difficult to detect.
During a survey of macroalgal biodiversity in Venice Lagoon, among the pool of exotic species found, there was an Ulva differing from the Atlantic and Mediterranean species in both vegetative and reproductive features. Detailed observations consented us to identify the taxon as Ulva pertusa Kjellman, previously reported in the Mediterranean only for Thau Lagoon.

Extended realities are often oriented in enhancing the perception of space, isolating the subject from the real environment and bringing the user to "anothe~e". In the "lmmaginario Bragadin" (imaginary BRAGADIN, n3,· flom "Marcantonio Bragadin", Venice 1523 - Famagosta 1571 , past marine captain) an incredible outside world and the "introvert" virtual environment meet to define a unique and origina l experience in the Venetian Laguna. From a collaboration between the Laboratories of the Dipartimento di Architettura, University of Florence (DIDALABS) and Lorenzo Parretti, artistic curator of the IB, a specific and itinerant exhibition was developed to offer people the experience of XR, while floating around one of the most fascinating landscape and built heritage place in the world.

IT. Le indagini archeologiche subacquee condotte tra il 2010 e il 2011 presso il canale Bastia, laguna sud di Venezia, hanno permesso di indagare i resti di due siti oggi sprofondati sotto il livello di medio mare. Si tratta del casone della “Rivola Vecchia”, impianto abitativo sorto in rapporto con l’economia di pesca e di caccia delle valli lagunari, che conobbe una lunga continuità di insediamento, tra il XVI e il XIX secolo. In prossimità di questo è stato scoperto un secondo sito, verosimilmente sempre in rapporto con l’economia valliva, che ha fornito riferimenti cronologici compresi tra il XIV e il XV secolo. I due siti sono di estremo interesse per comprendere le modificazioni geomorfologiche e ambientali subite da questo settore della laguna veneta, che determinarono ricadute fondamentali sulle modalità di sfruttamento del territorio lagunare e dell’insediamento da parte dell’uomo.
ENG. Underwater archaeological research realized in 2010 and 2011 near Bastia canal, in the southern area of Venice lagoon, allowed to investigate the remains of two sites now collapsed under the medium sea level. It is the casone named of “Rivola Vecchia”, a lagoon house born in relation with fishing and hunting economy in the lagoon, with a long continuity of settlement, from XVI to the XIX century. Near this site, was discovered a second one, bringing back to XIV-XV century. Both sites are very interesting to understand the geomorphological and environmental modifications of the southern Venice lagoon in last five-six centuries, with important consequences on human settlement an environment exploitation.
