PurposeThe paper seeks to explain the differences in drawings (e.g. owner‐manager dividends and salary) strategies among small business managers to show that owner‐managers' personal work values impact on the strategic choices of firms. It also examines the relationships between owner‐managers' work values and the amount of dividends the entrepreneurs take out of the business in order to follow the chosen strategy.Design/methodology/approachThis paper contributes to the existing knowledge of entrepreneurship and small business management. The sustainability of family businesses with their integral component of entrepre-neurial venturing are the result of decades of developmental processes. The role that these family businesses play in any economy can only be described as massive. Therefore, understanding the factors that affect or play a role in the success and continuity of these firms is important, and assessing the level and role of corporate governance in this perspective remains a challenge. The interplay of systems, leadership , accountability, transparency and remuneration, is proving to play a role in family business sustainability.

ABSTRACT During their life cycles many companies are confronted with the phenomenon of a crisis. Research distinguishes between the causes, management and prevention of crisis. The aim of this paper is to test empirically the theoretical approaches in the case of small and me- dium sized enterprises (SMEs), also because of the limited number of research studies in this field. The presented explorative study contributes to gain a deeper insight how SMEs deal with a crisis. 30 representatives from SMEs of different industries were interviewed in using an interview guideline. The texts were analysed by the qualitative method GABEK (GAnzheitliche BEwältigung von Komplexität) that transforms abstract individual unstruc- tured und unorganized texts onto a collective level. The results show that crisis prevention is more difficult for SMEs in comparison to larger corporations because of their limited re- sources. It has been identified that the personal contact to stakeholders is an added value of SMEs because of their size in order to manage and overcome a crisis. Finally it is shown that a crisis can be best overcome in focusing on the core business and growth, in addition to job cuts and reduction of working time. Based on the research findings the authors discuss the results with the existing theory and develop prepositions for further research.

Considering that personalities of entrepreneurs are diverse, we examine how the personality composition of entrepreneurial teams affects team performance. Given the specific challenges of the entrepreneurship setting, we suggest a new understanding of the team composition-team performance link by (1) taking a meta-perspective to personality that considers the stability vs. plasticity underlying the Big Five traits and by (2) applying a relative contribution (minimum/maximum) conceptualisation of team composition. We conduct a quantitative study with 104 entrepreneurial teams. Our findings indicate that high entrepreneurial team performance requires all team members to have minimum levels of stability-related traits (agreeableness, emotional stability, conscientiousness), but only one team member with high plasticity-related traits (openness, extraversion).
