Aim
To make an electrical circuit for a single lamp/fan/any other electrical
appliance controlled from two different places, wire and test the circuit for
staircase application.
Accessories Required
Insulated PVC wire (1/20), PVC pipes, PVC Junction boxes, GI clamps (C-
type), Screws, SPDT electrical switch, Bulb holder/Ceiling-rose.
Tools required
Screwdriver, cutting-plier, Pocket-knife, Hammer, Poker, Scale and,
electrical tester with neon indicator.
Theory
In some cases for convenience of usage, a single lamp has to be controlled
from two or more places; for instances in the stairway lighting a single lamp
intended to illuminate the staircase has to be switched on or off from the
landings on either end; such two way switches are shown in the figure.
It is also possible to control a lamp from three points for which case special
type intermediate switches are used.
Procedure
Wiring layout as in Fig.2 is drawn on the wooden board using chalk.
The PVC junction boxes, and PVC pipes are connected as per layout
diagram.
The pipes are fitted to the board at regular intervals using GI clamps
and screws.
Wires are connected to accessories such as SPDT switches and lamp
holders as per the wiring diagram.
Switches and the holders are fitted to respective junction boxes using
screws.
The circuit is ready to test and verify the operation using the truth table.

Result
The staircase wiring using a lamp controlled from two different places is
wired for the given layout. The wiring is simulated and tested, and the
control of lamp is verified by ON/OFF, indicated by current 0.01/53mA; by
shade Dark/Bright respectively and as given in figures (4-7) and table 1. The
simulation results are included as screenshots edited and presented in
Fig.4-Fig 7. To change the status of the lamp i.e ON to OFF or OFF to ON
change the status of the switch from UP to DN or DN to UP from any of the
two places.
Quiz:
Can we use this for bedroom?
If yes, how do you identify the two places where the switches are
proposed to be kept?
How do you use this wiring to control A Fan and Light from two
places?
