With the use of questionnaire returns from 214 male and 286 female upper-year high school students, a model of adolescent drug use is proposed. The model hypothesizes that the parents' child-rearing practices produce within the child a personality which shapes his attitudes toward the use of drugs, which in turn affect the child's use of marijuana, alcohol, and tobacco. The personality dimension in the model is Authoritarianism. The model proved more successful in predicting illicit than licit drug use. Further, love on the part of the mother and positive control on the part of the father were the most salient dimensions within the model with regard to child-rearing practices.

This article reports the development and validation of the
Personal Functioning Inventory (PFI), a new measure of
adaptiveness in coping. In Study 1, two adult samples
(Ns of 105 and 101) showed the PFI to be highly reliable
and to correlate substantially with a summed rating scale
for adaptiveness. Study 2 with 140 undergraduates again
showed the PFI to be highly reliable and to relate positively to problem-solving confidence and negatively to
perceived stress. Study 3, a two-wave longitudinal study
    with a three-week intersession interval, involved 149
undergraduates at Time 1 and retained 107 at Time 2. It
demonstrated strong reliability and stability for the PFI,
concurrent and predictive positive relations with selfrated adaptiveness and prolonged state anxiety, and discriminant validity against abstract curiosity. Factor
analyses consistently supported a one-factor structure for
the PFI. Possible applications for the scale are noted.

Stable and global attributions for negative events were tested as predictors of hopelessness depression symptoms, obtained from a diagnostic interview for a past depressive episode in a sample of 102 graduate students. All participants were administered the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM–IV, Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale, Personal Style Inventory, and a modified version of the Extended Attributional Style Questionnaire. A stable and global attributional style for negative events was significantly associated with a composite of hopelessness depression symptoms. A regression analysis revealed that attributional style significantly postdicted hopelessness depression symptoms when controlling for both sociotropy and autonomy. Structural equation modeling supported a model in which stable and global attributions predicted a latent variable, which we refer to as a motivational deficit, involving psychomotor retardation and fatigue as indicators. Therefore, thi...
