One of the primary uses of higher order statistics in signal processing has been for detecting and estimation of non- Gaussian signals in Gaussian noise of unknown covariance. This is motivated by the ability of higher order statistics to suppress additive Gaussian noise. In this paper, several methods to test for non- Gaussianity of a given process are presented. These methods include histogram plot, kurtosis test, and hypothesis testing using cumulants and bispectrum of the available sequence. The hypothesis testing is performed by constructing a statistic to test whether the bispectrum of the given signal is non-zero. A zero bispectrum is not a proof of Gaussianity. Hence, other tests such as the kurtosis test should be employed. Examples are given to demonstrate the performance of the presented methods.

The huge amount of electric power and cost associated with street lighting has raised the need to investigate both cost issues and environmental concerns. Cities worldwide are increasingly investing in energy-efficient street lighting systems. Modern street lighting technology can lower energy consumption as well as operation and maintenance costs significantly. In addition, bright street lighting can reduce accidents and crime rate in the area. Street lighting is an essential public service that provides a significant factor contributing to the quality of life and productivity of people workforces. This paper proposes an intelligent and energy-efficient traffic sensing system based on the widely distributed street lights. It is intended to observe vehicle’s movement on the road and turn ON a block of street lights ahead of vehicle whenever needed. As the vehicle passes by, the system turns OFF the trailing lights. The brightness (intensity of light) of the street light is adjusted ...

In this paper a new technique to estimate the coefficients of a general Autoregressive Moving Average (ARMA) (p, q) model is proposed. The ARMA system is excited by an un-observable independently identically distributed (i.i.d) non-Gaussian process. The proposed ARMA coefficients estimation method uses the QR-Decomposition (QRD) of a special matrix built with entries of third order cumulants (TOC) of the available output data only. The observed output may be corrupted with additive colored or white Gaussian noise of unknown power spectral density. The proposed technique was compared with several good methods such as the residual time series (RTS) and the Q-slice algorithm (QSA) methods. Simulations for several examples were tested. The results for these examples confirm the good performance of the proposed technique with respect to existing well-known methods.

Detection tools such as virus scanners have performed poorly, particularly when facing previously unknown virus or novel variants of existing ones. This study proposes an efficient and novel method based on arbitrary length of control flow graphs (ALCFG) and similarity of the aligned ALCFG matrix. The metamorphic viruses are generated by two tools; namely: next generation virus creation kit (NGVCK0.30) and virus creation lab for Windows 32 (VCL32). The results show that all the generated metamorphic viruses can be detected by using the suggested approach, while less than 62% are detected by well-known antivirus software.

Autoregressive moving average (ARMA) modeling has been used in many fields. This paper presents an approach to time series analysis of a general ARMA model parameters estimation. The proposed technique is based on the singular value decomposition (SVD) of a covariance matrix of a third order cumulants from only the output sequence. The observed data sequence is corrupted by additive Gaussian noise. The system is driven by a zero-mean independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) non-Gaussian sequence. Simulations verify the performance of the proposed method.

This paper proposes an intelligent automobile collision avoidance and safety system. The system is designed to detect an imminent crash and works on preventing or reducing the intensity of a coming accident at the rear end or front of the vehicle. The method presented here uses ultrasonic sound sensor technology. It recognizes and displays messages to the driver about the vehicles approaching his/her car. The system will measure the distance between two vehicles moving in the same lane and same direction. In case of an object trajectory is directed to its own vehicle and becomes dangerous, the system deploys safety measures to its own vehicle.

Model Order Reduction (MOR) plays a very essential role in reducing the complexity of the models, such as communication systems, transmission lines and most physical systems that impose major difficulties in analysis, simulation and control designs. MOR was developed in control theory areas that study the performance of dynamical systems in order to reduce their complexity. The objective of this paper is to obtain reduced model that is approximated to the original complex high order model with optimal solution and less complexity and with maintaining the same behavior of the original model. This is done using Genetic Algorithm (GA). MATLAB software will be utilized for simulations and testing the achieved results. Key-Words: Model Order Reduction; Genetic Algorithm; Eigenvalues; Transfer Function.

Public street lighting can account for a large part of the total bill in typical cities worldwide. It is a key consideration for any government from several perspectives. These include environmental, safety, and economical issues. Nowadays, all the lights on the roads stay switched ON all night long. Hence, a massive amount of energy is wasted when there are no vehicles on the road. However, street lights are not necessary if there is no traffic on the road at night. As natural energy resources are limited, it becomes necessary to look for solutions to save energy; in particular, reduce energy consumption in street lighting. This paper proposes a smart system to control the street lighting and reduce energy consumption. It is intended to observe vehicle's movement on the road and turns ON a block of street lights ahead of vehicle. As the vehicle passes by, the system turns OFF the trailing lights. In addition, the system will control the intensity of light. Hence, a decrease in ...

This paper introduces a novel technique for parameter estimation of an autoregressive (AR) all-pole process under non-Gaussian noise environment using third order cumulants of the observed sequence. The proposed AR parameters estimation technique is based on formulating a particular structured matrix with entries of third order cumulants of the observed output sequence only. This matrix almost possesses a full rank structure. The observed sequence may be contaminated with additive Gaussian noise (white or colored), whose power spectral density is unknown. The system is driven by a zero-mean independent and identically distributed (i.i.d) non-Gaussian sequence. Simulation results confirm the good numerical conditioning of the algorithm and the improvement in performance with respect to well-known methods even when the observed signal is heavily contaminated with Gaussian noise.

Underwater wireless sensor networks (UWSN) have recently been proposed as a way to monitor and explore the water depths' environments. Efficiently delivering the data is still a challenging problem in these networks because of the weaknesses in the acoustic transmission. To tackle such a problem, we propose a novel algorithm provides controlling mechanisms for critical long-term data forwarding underwater sensor networks, called Hop by Hop Power-Efficient Routing Protocol (Hn-PERP). The proposed Hn-PERP is a centralized full-control model that enhances the network's throughput and energy efficiency by a set of solutions depend on power monitoring in UWSN nodes. In particular, the model provides a guaranteed mechanism for scheduling and processing data transmission based on number of nodes, hops between the nodes, energy level and congestion within each node to minimize energy levels or power consumption by avoiding disconnected probability for any node, which in turn maximiz...

Extraction of foetal ECG that is embedded in the maternal ECG is a challenging problem. This paper presents a combined system to extract foetal ECG from maternal abdominal ECG. The system uses a combination of singular value decomposition (SVD) and a neuro-fuzzy inference system. The SVD is used to construct two reference signals, while the fuzzy system is used as an adaptive canceller. The algorithm is applied on synthetic as well as real data and the results are presented. In addition, the paper presents an example of using the same system as a noise removal tool.

A novel substructure (dominant eigenvalue) preserving genetic algorithm approach for model order reduction (MOR) of multi-time-scale systems is presented in this paper. The new technique is formulated based on genetic algorithms (GAs), sub-optimization and estimation. The GA predicts the elements of an upper triangular matrix form of the system state matrix A, defined in state space representation along with the elements of B, C, and D matrices. The GA procedure is based on maximizing the fitness function corresponding to the reciprocal response deviation between the full order model and the reduced order model. The proposed GA model order reduction method is compared to well-known reduction techniques such as the Balanced Schur Decomposition (BSD), proper orthogonal decomposition (POD), and state elimination through balanced realization. Simulation results validate the robustness of the new technique for MOR with eigenvalue preservation.
