The myth of form contains an architectural paradox. Without form, there is no architecture. The hypothetical question of form vs. thanatos justifies the myth of form in architecture. The autonomy project of architecture is a myth that has its different fields: cognitive, practical, and, ultimately, subjective. The subjective is inseparable from the field of architecture, both in terms of creation and perception. If there is no form in architecture, architecture disappears as a field. A formal approach to architecture uses proportional analysis to find repetitiveness in intensity. The tip of the iceberg is the autonomy of architecture. In architecture, the formal has its own strict rules; by contrast, avant-garde practices questioned the rules.

The Concept of the Congress
Aesthetics is nowadays recognized as an important philosophical, scientific and theoretical discipline in terms of interpreting the complexity of phenomena of the contemporary world. Today it’s rather talked about possible worlds or possible aesthetic regimes rather than of an unique and consistent philosophical, scientific or theoretical discipline. Confrontation of aesthetics with the complexities of the sensory, sentimental, affective, conceptual and discursive phenomena of contemporary world – society, culture, art, technology and politics – is revealed in relation to the history of aesthetics, geographically diverse aesthetic systems and, of course, hybrid technologies of media display, representation and communication of contemporary forms of life.

The Belgrade Congress – 21st ICA : BELGRADE – aims to map out contemporary aesthetics practices in a vivid dialogue of aestheticians, philosophers, art theorists, theorists of architecture, theorists of culture, media theorists, artists, media entrepreneurs, architects, cultural activists and researchers in the fields of humanities and social sciences. More precisely, the goal is to map possible worlds of contemporary aesthetics in Europe, Asia, North and South America, Africa and Australia. The idea is to show, interpret and map the unity and diverseness in aesthetic’ thought, expression, research, and teachings on our shared planet. Our goal is to promote dialogue concerning aesthetic in those parts of the world that have not been involved in the work of International Association for Aesthetics to this day. Global dialogue, understanding and cooperation are what we aim to achieve… Miodrag Šuvaković

The industrial heritage of the city of Belgrade is the focus of this research, which highlights the possibilities of preserving industrial heritage from the perspective of a contemporary context and sustainable development. Guided by theoretical principles on the preservation of cultural and industrial heritage, their values, authenticity and spirit of place, as well as the idea of the necessity of integrating industrial heritage into the contemporary context, this paper aims to examine the possibilities for the preservation of industrial heritage following theoretically established principles, with the introduction of new uses and sustainable solutions. The analysis of the case studies of Belgrade’s industrial heritage presented in this paper results from research conducted by the teachers, associates and students of the University of Belgrade, Faculty of Architecture. The research focuses on the possibilities of translating the principles of preserving cultural and industrial heritage from their theoretical definition to practical application. The students’ conceptual solutions for protection, revitalisation and presentation of the analysed case studies represent the research results. An important aspect of this paper is defining the criteria for valorising students’ conceptual solutions, which are aligned with the principles of preserving cultural heritage and establishing sustainable development. The valorisation of students’ conceptual solutions through a defined set of criteria indicates real possibilities for the simultaneous preservation of all the values of industrial heritage and its transformation into a social, ecological and economic resource of the contemporary city.

Abstract:
This paper presents research on the historical and urban development of the palace complex on Terazije
during the 19th and early 20th centuries, placing a focus on the period from the 1840s to the 1880s, i.e.
upon the architecture of the Prince’s Court (Knežev dvorac, also known as the Stari konak) and the Court
of Crown Prince Mihailo, which were both demolished in the early 20th century. The process of urban
transformation of the complex and the design of buildings for the accommodation of the then-rulers is
presented, based on the available historical material (old plans and photographs), as well as pre-existing
interpretations of this topic available in published literature. Both the appearance of the court buildings and
the complex itself in certain phases of development are reconstructed, facilitated by comparative situational
representations and axonometric projections. A typological and stylistic analysis of the architectural
characteristics of the Stari konak and the court, which are to be considered representative examples of the
transition from the Classicist to the Romantic era of Serbian architecture in the middle of the 19th century,
is given. The paper places a particular emphasis on the historical and cultural significance in the present
of these now-demolished buildings for preserving the memory of an extremely important period in the
history of the modern Serbian state.

Boško Drobnjak and Miško Šuvaković

The Organization of the 21st International Congress of Aesthetics by the Faculty of Architecture, University of Belgrade and the Society for Aesthetics of Architecture and Visual Arts of Serbia (DEAVUS) under the auspices of International Association for Aesthetics on “Possible Worlds of Contemporary Aesthetics: Aesthetics Between History, Geography and Media”, had the basic in-tention to show, interpret and map the unity and diverseness in aesthetic thought, expression, research, and philosophies on our planet.
This special issue of Popular Inquiry consists of six of the papers presented at the ICA 21st Congress that are thematically within the scope of the journal. Dušan Milenković’s text “Understated Significance of Form in Gracyk's Aesthetics of Popular Music” discusses the significance of form which causes specific problems in Theodore Gracyk’s aesthetic theory. Fuminori Akiba’s “Aesthetics of Japanese Convenience Stores: From the Point of 'Eating Alone'” reconsiders the lack of shadow/darkness and food culture from convenience stores in contemporary Japan. Maxim Dem-chuk’s article on “Deconstruction of Melody and Rhythm as Aesthetic Elements of Contemporary Popular Music (The Case of Kanye West’s Album «Yeezus»)” emphasizes the phenomenon of the consumption of contemporary musical products available for listening on the various social net-works. Aleš Čakalič’s article “Tragedy and Farce in Dušan Kovačević’s Post-Yugoslav Screenplays” interprets how specific Serbian film scripts can be read in relation to Marx’s assertion. Yumi Kim Takenaka’s paper on “The Family of Man in Japan: A Photographic Exhibition for World Peace and Atomic Culture in the 1950s” stress the ethical dimension of the exhibition The Family of Man, a large-scale photographic record of the human development and cycles of life in the context of con-temporary global antagonisms.
Texts collected in this issue discuss complex relations between political, philosophical, cul-tural, aesthetic modalities of contemporary art and culture.

This paper analyses architecture created through appropriating
existing materials while focusing on strategies of intertextuality.
It argues that the meaning of an architectural object does not
derive from itself, or its poetic concepts, but rather from its
relationship with other architectural objects, other art works as
texts, cultural texts, and everyday practices. My aim is to show
various theoretical problems of the theory of architecture and
art, which as a network of overlapping texts of culture, surround
the architectural production of Alexander Brodsky. Here I use
different and varied theoretical concepts, selecting two case
studies by Brodsky – The Pavilion for Vodka Ceremonies and
Rotunda – upon which the paper is based as an interdiscursive
study.

An important goal of this research is to provide professional information and raise public awareness about the importance and potential of industrial heritage for the future economic, cultural, social and tourist development of the city. This paper analyzes possibilities to comprehend the problems of the city's industrial heritage protection regarding its historical and urban context, its genesis, authenticity, identity, cultural, architectural, economic, social, productive, creative and environmental values. According to that, the main goal of this research is concentrated on the sustainable preservation of specific cultural tangible and intangible values, spirit of the place, city identity and historic cityscape values that characterize industrial heritage in the social, cultural, natural and built environmental systems.

Marking the 100th anniversary of the founding of Bauhaus, one of the leading and most influential modernist art schools, which, despite its short period of activity (1919-1933), paved the way for the new artistic, theoretical and social toponyms through its educational system, this text collects and exposes the specific and complex echoes created by designers, artists and architects from the Yugoslav cultural areas. The subject of this paper is related to a group of students from the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenians (from 1929, the Kingdom of Yugoslavia) who studied architecture, textile design, photography and the fine arts at the Bauhaus in the period 1924-1932. Education at the Bauhaus, political context, as well as work in various prestigious architectural bureaus or individual design practices were of utmost importance in forming the ideological frameworks of the Yugoslav Bauhaus students’ production. In other words, the text seeks to illustrate the complex relationships between the individual poetics of the Yugoslav students at the Bauhaus and the historical moment in which they acted. The aim of the research is to determine the cultural and social positions of their work through relating the aesthetic reading of artistic practices, concise review of the socio-historical context and individual cases of Yugoslav students. The research methodology is framed by the existing sources and interpretations.
