L'A. etudie le statut philosophique de l'oeuvre de Pascal en en mesurant la reception chez quelques ecrivains et critiques du XVII e siecle a nos jours: Madame de Sevigne, Diderot, d'Alembert, Chateaubriand, Sainte-Beuve, Valery, L. Goldmann, M. BLanchot et L. Thirouin. Adoptant la methode d'interpretation indirecte qu'est le commentaire de commentateurs, l'A. montre que la reception des «Pensees» comme aide a la meditation ou comme monument participe a une reevaluation de la rhetorique qui permet de situer Pascal dans la tradition de la philosophie antique a visee pratique destinee au perfectionnement moral de son lecteur

Cet article s'interroge sur les origines intellectuelles d'un des themes les plus connus de la pensee liberale, le theme de la main invisible. Albert Hirschman voit une filiation entre la main invisible et le providentialisme augustinien. Jacob Viner, pour sa part, voit dans le providentialisme optimiste des Lumieres la continuation laicisee d'un providentialisme chretien non-augustinien proche de la pensee stoicienne. L'article soutient que Smith construit son systeme sur une refutation du concept augustinien d'amour-propre et que son providentialisme optimiste s'affirme de facon polemique contre l'idee augustinienne de providence.

La preface de l'edition de Port-Royal des "Pensees" de Pascal (1670) redigee par Etienne Perier, et la "Vie de Pascal" par sa soeur Gilberte Perier proposent un protocole de lecture des "Pensees" dont l'influence persiste encore aujourd'hui. On part de la constatation du caractere fragmentaire et incomplet de l'oeuvre. L'incompletude de l'oeuvre suscite un desir de completude qui se realise dans une meditation sur la perfection et la saintete de la vie de l'auteur, combinaison exemplaire d'une extreme intelligence et d'une extreme humilite. Il existe donc en ce sens un rapport essentiel entre ecriture fragmentaire et hagiographie. Des variations de ce protocole de lecture se trouvent chez Chateaubriand, Sainte-Beuve, Goldmann, Blanchot et Marin.

This article reads Helvetius as he is rarely read: as a political theorist. It argues that the most appropriate frame of reference for capturing the coherence of Helvetius' political thought is the Epicurean tradition. Notions studied include the status of self-interest as a first principle, the organicist conception of the social body, republicanism and the relationship between utility and consent. Special attention is given to Helvetius' appropriation of La Rochefoucauld's Maxims and to his use of Gassendi's philosophy. References are drawn from the complete works of Helvetius, including the Notes, the correspondence and the poetry.

This article studies the foundation and early history of La Bastide Clairence, with a focus on the foundational charter granted by King Louis I of Navarre, which governed the life of the community. Because of its status as a newly created city, it was peopled by a geographically diverse immigration, proceeding not only from Lower Navarre but also from various locations on the Northern side of the Pyrenees as well as other zones of France that had regular links with the kingdom of Navarre.

Prior to the massive wave of emigration to South America during the nineteenth century, inhabitants of rural communities in the western French Pyrenees emigrated in large numbers to Saint-Domingue and other Caribbean islands. This article... more
Prior to the massive wave of emigration to South America during the nineteenth century, inhabitants of rural communities in the western French Pyrenees emigrated in large numbers to Saint-Domingue and other Caribbean islands. This article examines the connections between migratory movements and the organization of these communities into “house societies” (Lévi-Strauss) in which the continuation of the “house” was paramount and no new “houses” could be founded. Adopting a microhistorical approach, it analyzes the complex role of inheritance rights in the decision to emigrate and reconstructs the networks that made emigration possible. Unlike the traditional belief that sons were forced to leave because they were deprived of their share of inheritance, the family unit fully supported the emigration of its younger members. This article also argues that emigration simultaneously resulted from and undermined the “house system.”

RésuméAvant l’émigration de masse vers l’Amérique du Sud au XIXe siècle, les communautés rurales des Pyrénées occidentales connurent un mouvement migratoire notable vers Saint-Domingue et les autres îles des Caraïbes. Cette étude porte sur les rapports entre les mouvements migratoires et l’organisation de ces communautés en « sociétés à maisons » (Claude Lévi- Strauss), où la continuité de la « maison » était essentielle et aucune nouvelle « maison » ne pouvait être fondée. Usant d’une méthode microhistorique, on analyse le rôle complexe des coutumes successorales dans la décision d’émigrer, et on reconstruit les réseaux qui permirent l’émigration. Loin de l’image traditionnelle du fils forcé de partir parce que privé de sa part d’héritage, on montre que l’émigration des cadets avait le soutien de l’ensemble du groupe familial. On soutient aussi que vis-à-vis du « système à maisons », l’émigration était tout à la fois une conséquence du système et contraire à l’esprit du système.
