This paper aims to showcase an ongoing service design project for the Montemor-o-Velho municipality, which is integrated in Ruas de Cultura (Streets of Culture), a project with a wider scope. The proposal of Montemor-o-Velho City Hall promotes the regeneration of several central urban spaces, through the dinamization of 3 axes: 1 – One unit where the Artistic Residencies will be installed; 2 – A Technological Centre and companies’ incubator; 3 – Several spaces dedicated to social activities. The ID+ participates with 2 types of intervention. The first one is centred around the development of actions/tools that can promote the implementation of an organizational and space management model based on the following premises: active incentives to sharing experiences, sharing knowledge and tasks; and a second one focused on the creation of an identity system for the project. This article aims to highlight the axis of service design actions/tools’ development, with a particular emphasis on ...

Design has always expressed itself through its cultural intervention in society, accompanying or inducing technological innovation, changing behaviours and shaping the artificial world in which we live, imbuing it with new meaning and sensemaking. Regarding design for social innovation, there is now a new wave of social innovations more concerned with the environment, with younger generations taking the lead and taking to action. And there is also a general perception that society and companies are more active and participatory in actions to defend the planet, but are designers following these changes? Given the unpredictability of events and the speed of change, designers should be more proactive than never. Designers have the ability and capability of observing the world and finding solutions to problems, to anticipate other problems, and more importantly, to devise opportunities to innovate and avoid future problems. Are we doing enough? _____________________ *Text of the confere...

In 2006, Naoto Fukasawaand Jasper Morrison creates the Super Normal exhibition, in which ordinary objects are exposed questioning the increasingly elitist role of design and suggesting an alternative vision. The choice of objects not only expressed their individual views, but also the approach of all the authors exposed, serving as a basis for the expansion of the concept of Super Normalfor a concept of normality. More comprehensive, built based on the concepts of each author mentioned, the idea of normalisolates the reactions to special, systematizes them on criteria of time and space, and seeks to absorb the work of many other authors and critics who discuss the product of similar points of view.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

A análise do terri...

This paper describes a workshop that will explore the social and sustainable dimensions of cities based on the concept of a Collaborative City, that is, a city with kernels of creativity, which are constituted by: social services, artistic and economic activities; a city where local authorities create opportunities for citizens participation, bottom-up creativity and collaborative services. This collaborative city is a place where people interact and enact creating a symbiosis of activities that promote sustainable lifestyles, an active citizenship, social inclusion, cultural diversity and new economic models.<br> We will guide a design exercise on which participants – after an introduction on these topics and case studies description (case history) - will go through a brainstorming session, generating possible solutions in the framework of a concept identity for Chicago as a collaborative city. Afterwards, it will be developed a scenario building, defining specific frameworks...

Observing the problems arising from a production-consumption system, prevalent since the second half of the XXth century, as well as its consequences at various levels – environmental, economic, cultural and social -, it becomes evident that the current economic model, in its present form, is an unsustainable one. Concurrently, contemporary cities, specially big metropolises, are the arena where both the virtues and problems linked with that unsustainable model are most visible. Against this backdrop it was key to search for emerging and promising signals that could point to alternative development pathways, mainly using a case studies methodology. This search resulted in the finding of emerging phenomena, such as Creative Places that, almost paradoxically, seem to show that it is in cities that alternative counter- movements or countertrends are flourishing. The evaluation of the case studies was carried out taking into consideration the interactions between three main areas of activity: . Culture, seen as one of the engines that propels economic growth, a more universal worldview and the democratic involvement of citizens. . Knowledge based enterprises, which support a knowledge-based economy and have a key role in the attraction and retention of talent, fundamental for countries and cities competitiveness alike. . Social initiatives, which play a major role in offsetting the emerging flaws in the traditional nation-state’s welfare system. The analysis was focused, mainly, in the interrelations between the actors involved (between local authorities and Creative Places and between all members of Creative Places), in an attempt to understand collaborative and social services generated by those interrelations, and in the cultural and entrepreneurial dynamics developed in those places. The broader idea was to understand which aspects were innovative regarding social, cultural and economic dynamics in order to understand how this can be improved and reproduced through a strategic design approach and service design tools. The main result of this research is a theoretical framework of knowledge on Creative Places and its role in the creation of a Collaborative City, from the perspective of Strategic Design and Service Design. Another main result achieved is the presentation of a non-exhaustive set of strategic design guidelines to bridge local top-down initiatives with bottom-up ones, designing an interface capable of nurturing and sustaining social and economic innovation and stimulating an active citizenship, and providing tools for citizens to collaborate, create, and contribute in the process. The research undertook was limited by the complexity involving Creative Places and innovative communities. The multiplicity of factors and actors interacting in real time within very complex systems makes it difficult to study all its multiple dimensions and dynamics. Simultaneously, the up-to-dateness, fluidity and rapid pace of change that characterises those systems made trying to extract structuring principles and building an interpretative model rather elusive. Considering this research as a snapshot of contemporaneity, its conclusions are directly intertwined and constrained by that fact, that is, the conclusions drawn are not definitive and closed, instead they are a work in progress that results from a serious effort to interpret and extract guiding principles from a reality in rapid mutation, and therefore open to further exploration and novel constructions. It was concluded albeit, that design might act as a strategic instrument and as a Rosetta stone able to decode, combine and give sense to interdisciplinary knowledge, declining it into a coherent project language. Also the Service Design operative contribution towards a sustainable society is a strategic one, rooted in the need to have a holistic vision in the approach to problem-solving and decision- making processes. It is important to underline that the contexts where innovative communities exist cannot be “designed”, and that that was not the aim behind this research. The purpose of this research was to observe and understand its dynamics and to extrapolate ways of further enhancing them and allow for their replicability within different contexts, not to engage in what could be regarded as “social engineering”.

In a few decades, the digital age came into our lives changing lifestyles and social behaviours, forcing the world to rethink daily experiences, including those taking place in the workplaces. The digital nomadism that facilitates the mobility and flexibility of work meets the requirements of today's society and stimulates the emergence of coworking spaces. Furniture design also needs to approach the new demands of current lifestyle. Within this context, the article intends to find out the role that furniture plays in such spaces. The research was carried out by studying a random sample of coworking spaces in Oporto. An interview and a survey were conducted to the coworking space users in order to identify the furniture’s common denominator in those places considering the pairs ergonomic function/comfort, materials/sustainability and flexibility/form as main parameters. The principal output of this study is to attract the attention of designers to the importance of furniture whe...

This article is based on an analysis of visual communication concept and its use in the context of science communication. Since the first scientific publications authors seek to strengthen their findings with the aid visual representations, facilitating the dissemination of their knowledge. The incorporation of images in communication strategy, since the Nicolaus Copernicus Heliocentric model to more recent examples like the images of Cosmos produced by the Hubble Space Telescope, will contribute towards the role of communication disciplines in the production of scientific images. In a society where the abundance of visual elements is becoming stronger and where the construction of knowledge resorts to the use of new languages, it is important to assess the contribution of visual representation in science communication for a better understanding of the world.

This paper aims to show a project carried out by a student of the Design Master’s at Universidade de Aveiro, which consists of a Food Diary supported by a ludic and pedagogical kit implemented in 1st grade schools. Western lifestyles have had several consequences in Public Health, particularly in children’s diets. With this project we intended to demonstrate the role of design in the development of a social project, in its ability to design in a participatory way and in its ability to change behaviours, in particular, children’s food behaviours. The methodology applied has its roots in participatory design, thus the conceptual process was undertaken collaboratively with a diverse team of professionals, several institutions in the region and the children themselves, being the designer a mediator between their different contributions. In its results, we would like to highlight the positive impact of this project in the children involved, who through the Kit’s usage, became aware of th...

This paper will focus in the urban territory and its social, cultural and economic dynamics, and in particular in the different manifestations of creativity that can be found here, namely in spaces in which spontaneous and diffuse forms of social innovation and creativity are emerging: Creative Places. It is in this urban context that Creative Places thrive, working as incubators of change, sustainable behaviours, bottom-up creativity and a subculture of collaboration. In this framework, Creative Places shape a Collaborative City, which in turn fosters the appearance of Creative Places. The assumption of design as a strategic instrument to operate in complex systems involving complex networks of actors and able to decode, combine and make sense of multidisciplinary knowledge; and in so doing, able to decline it into a coherent projectual, flexible and open-ended language in order to promote the diffusion of sustainable social innovations and widen their reach and impact through desi...

The use and democratisation of new digital technologies have given visibility to groups of people and grassroots organizations that can be considered agents of change in the transition to a more sustainable world. Design plays an important role in the definition of strategies and in the development of innovative solutions to tackle some of the contemporary problems society faces. This paper aims to show several projects developed over the last 5 years in the subject Design for Social Innovation at the Master in Design and the Master in Engineering and Product Design at the University of Aveiro, and its relation to the new social media and technologies. By using Service Design tools to improve Social Innovations and the integration of new digital technologies, we design new and improved solutions to foster sustainable development. The creation of a DESIS Lab has also allowed to develop innovative design solutions within local communities. The methodology used is based on Learning-by-...

This paper aims to show the design process of a project developed by the Design students of the Universidade de Aveiro. The project is part of a wide challenge launched to all Portuguese Design Universities called " Action for Age ". This initiative intends to raise awareness amongst young designers to the problematic of population ageing and its consequent social transformations. It is intended to showcase new approaches to the design process, focusing in Service Design , contributing towards the consolidation of an emerging fi eld in the Design area. The students were asked to identify a place and design a solution that would stimulate intergen-erational relationships. Students were prompted to defi ne their own brief, which led them to develop fl exible solutions: a service, a network, an object, a shop, an initiative. The purpose was to conceive an integrated solution that could respond to the identifi ed need of enhancing intergenerational relationships, resulting in better integration of the elderly, as well as other individuals, in the community. For the project kick off , students had to pinpoint a place and its ongoing activities. Those activities were regarded as social innovations , and as their goal was to analyse them thoroughly and propose ways to strengthen and connect them. On a second phase, students were engaged in scenarios' building, which worked as a tool to facilitate strategic discussion amongst the diff erent stakeholders involved, and later designed the toolkits that would enable the implementation of those scenarios. The results of these projects will be presented, although the focus of this paper is more the process and tools used for their development.

This article brings to the forefront the possibility for cross-referencing between the investigation in design at service of creative industries and the world-wide phenomenon of the disappearance of bees with the consequential imbalance of eco systems and in particular of the farming economy. Potential can found in the honeycomb making process within which we have given the name of 'natural extrusion' in this project. Hives are seen as natural factories not only in the production of honey but also of various other products which have been under-valued until now and which we intend to explore, such as bee wax for instance. To give a greater sense of awareness concerning the disappearance of this species and to emphasize bee wax's value, this project proposes the control of the matrix of the honeycombs construction. Through this control, and without a significant investment and specialized schooling, this natural technology will enable the materialization of complex three-dimensional forms, which in this case, may act as molds. These three-dimensional molds facilitate the detection of concepts and ideas, therefore being able to transit from a model in bee wax to the final object in other materials such as brass, silver, latex or caramel.
