The review article systematizes the main achievements in the study of literary societies and associations in Russian and foreign historiography of the 1990s – 2010s, and analyzes approaches to this material within the framework of various disciplines and methodologies. The author puts forwards an institutional approach as the basis for the development of a conceptual and factually rich language for describing literary societies in Russia in the first half of the 19th century. An institutional approach provides an opportunity to link the history of literary associations with broader socio-historical context and to describe the role of literary societies in the formation of the “public sphere” and the civil society in Nineteenth-Century Russia.

The article reviews the history of Pushkin's participation in the activities of the Free Society of Lovers of Russian Literature, one of the most significant literary and social institutions of the 1810s and the first half of the 1820s. The author reconstructs in detail the cases when Pushkin's texts were presented at the meetings of the Free Society in 1819-23 using the materials of the Society's archive, including unpublished documents. She also introduces previously unknown information about the presentation of the Lycée cycle of "Tableaux"-"The Faun and the Shepherdess" ("Favn i Pastushka") in 1820 and identifies which of Pushkin's poems was read at the Free Society's May 1823 public meeting under the title "Farewell" ("Proshchanie"). This newly discovered information allows us to revisit the question of why, despite his participation in the Society, Pushkin was never inducted as a member. The answer offered here proceeds from analysis of both Pushkin's literary strategy 1819-25 and the Free Society's institutional principles: the poet did not fit into the organizational structure of the Free Society, and his literary strategy at the time eschewed legitimization from any literary society, salon or circle.

The article introduces the academic community to the earliest and the most complete manuscript copy of Alexander Pushkin’s poem Vadim, discovered in the Mukhanovs’ Archive (preserved at the Manuscript Department, the State Historical Museum, Moscow), which should be acknowledged as the most authoritative source of the main text, and systematizes the early manuscript copies of another Southern poem — The Robber Brothers, outlining its creative history. The close connection between the creative and reception history, illustrated here by the Southern poems, broadens our understanding of the textual status of early manuscript copies and prompts us to reconsider our operational methods, both in textual and literary, and historical perspectives.

The article focuses on the institutional interactions between the literary field and the institutions of the Ministry of Public Education in 1824–1826. In this context, the author explores the editorial and censorial background of the first chapter of Eugene Onegin (1825) and Poems by A. Pushkin (Stikhotvoreniia Alexandra Pushkina, 1826), and argues that Minister Shishkov played a significant role in the emergence of both editions. Moreover, the newly discovered official letter by Shishkov, regarding the unwelcome publication of Pushkin’s Poems at the departmental printing house, allows to clarify the censorial history of one more prominent edition of the period — Eda and The Feasts (Piry) by E. Baratynskiy (1826).

The article reviews the history of the publication of Baratynsky’s Collected Poems (1835), the critical reception of the book, and its influence on his further literary career. Analyzing Baratynsky’s publications in 1835–1836, the author of the article assumes that the belated publication of the collection overshadowed Baratynsky’s new poetic texts in the Moscow Observer (“The Last Poet”, “Nedonosok”, etc.), and the composition of the poetic book did not allow to highlight Baratynsky’s texts of the early 1830’s and to estimate his poetic evolution.

In this article, I consider both the circumstances under which Evgeny Baratynsky’s and Anton Del’vig’s parodic hexameters (“There, where the Semenovsky Regiment is quarter, in the Fifth Company, in a small house…”) came to be written and the verses’ literary context. My reevaluation of the poem’s traditional dating, together with my analysis of its genre and style, lead me to conclude that Del’vig’s and Baratynsky’s text may have been created as a parody of Nikolai Gnedich’s idyll “The Fishers” (appeared at the end of February, 1822) and thus played a role in a polemic concerning the genre of the idyll.
